This message needs to be shared with all outdoor enthusiasts. The mountains give life, I think those of us that spend time in them realize that but I think we all need to do and can do more to protect mother earth.
Totally. For this episode, there's the downhill start... Cody's GP to a side shot of Cody and then to a drone. Like did you have to get Cody to stop before switching to the drone?
The song that starts with the mountain asking "Who are you? Who are you?" and the response is, "I'm your grandchild. I am returning to you." That really captures what climbing is like for me.
Your ancestors Cody are "Odin" and "Frigg". LOL. This is a brilliant episode, bringing in Lakota culture and Native American athletes, skiers into your series shows a level of sensibility that many that have recorded stories here have failed to include. Every episode gets better and better and we are thankful that you have included the world to be part of your journey. Agreeing, that we have to collectively be responsible to the World, to the environment and indigenous cultures. Bravo and applause aplenty from us Albas. By the way, this is our kind of skiing, where its not a nail bitter all the way down...
The words and sentiments shared through the wisdom and knowledge of Connor and Len brought tears to my eyes as they so fundamentally embrace the reason for why we must do everything we can to protect this planet. Thank you Cody and Bjarne for your relentless pursuit of portraying the places and rituals we need to be human.
Somehow you manage to outdo yourself every episode Cody + Bjarnes. Even if it's not the sickest line, it's always a meaningful story. Fantastic man, nothing makes me happier than a new FIFTY episode.
Thanks Jon. Yeah, really hoping to be able to tell stories outside of just going up and coming back down with this series. Luckily there is a wealth of special people like Len and Connor tell tell them.
Cody this is the best one yet! So awesome that you had Native American culture brought to light here! I went back to college in my early 40s and got my second degree, History. One of the classes I took was from a Prof. that I knew from playing golf w him. He’s Native American and we had so much fun learning from him. One thing that has stuck w me all these years later was his telling us how they believe that each person has a “power place in the Universe”! Mine is the mountains, I feel unstoppable when there. My wife is the ocean! Again thanks for sharing this episode! Epic!
In 2000, over two magical days, Lorne Glick, Jon Allen, Doug Byerly, Lance McDonald and I traversed and skied all seven of the La Sal peaks. While the "Tuk" was spectacular, the highlight was the final 5000' descent from Mt Waas down into Castle Valley, where we had also spent much time climbing the towers. Thanks for bringing back the memories and good luck on St Elias!
This is a work of art. I really enjoyed it and I appreciate that it exists in the world. You are doing such a great job of finding truly amazing human beings to include in this project. Amazing.
This was a really touching episode one of my favorites as ive been binge watching the whole series in chronological order. Thank you Cody for these amazing films.
This episode really struck a deep chord with me.. “That feeling you get at the bottom of a line” is among the most profound states of being I know, and way down is the the closest I’ve ever come to grace. I long for and aspire to it.. This entire project is so awesomely inspiring, and I can’t wait for more! I love you guys!!!
Wow, this takes this series on to a whole different level of excellence and engagement; not only is this the most kick-ass ski-mountaineering/randonee series ON the planet, it actually concerns itself with how we live on and with our fragile beautiful planet, and with cultural and mythical and philosophical considerations that are usually conspicuously absent from "outdoors" youtube videos. Chapeau! I love you for this.
This is my favorite thing on the internet! Thankyou so much for sharing your experiences in the mountains Cody! The importance of these videos speak so many perspectives and create so many conversations. Can't wait!
Sooooooo grateful for this episode which should be watched by EVERY OUTDOOR ATHLETE EVERYWHERE! feeble ilg's partner is full blood Navajo and we work on bringing trails and yoga to the Dineh youth, so "AheeHee" for this fantastic Medicine Teaching! head bowed, spirit vowed....
I first learned about Moab when Powder Magazine did an article in the late 80's on free heel skiing Mt. Tut in the morning and riding Slickrock trail in the afternoon. Mountain biking was in its infancy. Been making annual pilgrimages to ride there since early 90's. Still gotta ski there. May be next year. Great video and perspective.
I’ve been through Moab numbers of times, but never with snow gear. I always thought the La Sals would be a great ski tour. And really liked you bringing the Native American aspect into this episode. A big thanks to Len. I wish all backcountry enthusiasts had this attitude. Thanks for another inspiring vid (as I suffer through pouring rain here in the PNW)!
Thank you Johnny "racecar" Rossman for showing this to all of us. I love everything you send me, but especially this. Love the way he described our connection to nature and how it fills the soul.
Great views of the La Sal mountains. That's a really unique range and the comment that this line is on the fifty list because of where it is makes sense.
I've watched a good fraction of 'The Fifty', but this video has got to be your best. I have to salute the editing Bjarne did for the skin track, perfectly understated. The skiing is great, the views fantastic, and the commentary Len and Connor added was outstanding. Edward Abbey also pulled a couple permits for 'Tuk' and offered his thoughts about living in these mountains,. The video is damn fine.
Another great one. Great mountain, great filming and editing, and above all, great commentary by the various narrators. This one is a bit more philosophical than the others I have seen in this series.
Absolutely stunning Cody. Beautiful. I’m planning on going on my first ski tour this season (I’m 58) and I can’t wait. Looking forward to the next episode.
Salvatore7921 I'm 65 and have been BC skiing since my 20s. I'm not now and have never been a Cody, but you can have fun skiing peaks at any age. Go for it.
A T Thank you. I live in the UK and didn’t start skiing until I was 24 and can only get to go a couple of times a year. Mostly in Europe and the French Alps. I managed to get to Banff this year and fulfilled a lifetime ambition to go heli-skiing. I’ve watched lots of you tube videos of ski touring and looks amazing. Goal is to do the Haute Route in 2022
This was amazing. So well done and beautifully put together. I have always loved Moab for its open spaces and mountain biking, I will certainly look at at this tour to my list in April 2020. I loved the connection back to the Native American's, very well done.
That part of Utah looks really beautiful. I have only visited Park City and the Cottonwoods so far. Im really looking forward to skiing in southern Utah also.
I've loved this series Cody; thank you so much fo fit. I'ts rekindled my climbing bug & despite never having snowboard mountaineered, I'm already making plans from a Covid-Locked UK
This is so great. I haven't skied here, but the hike was amazing. Moab is a special place. I love hearing the different perspecives and backgrounds in this episode. Love the bit about the outdoors aren't just for playing, but we live on planet earth. Well put. I absolutely agree, we all have to come together to relate to these places as our relatives and part of our beings.
Thank you so much for this! Wonderful collab with Natives Outdoors. I love hearing this perspective on outdoor recreation. It’s so important to remember that these mountains are so much more to humanity than merely a playground.
Just re-watched this. This is my favorite episode of the series. We head to to Moab every April for an annual MTB trip. We are adding this line to the front end of our trip for a Full Ski / Bike Enchilada experience. Thanks for the stoke!
Two days after I find Dr. Necefer's article "Seekseekqua on the Line of Climate Change" (go read it!) he shows up on a 3 year old episode of The FIFTY. Awesome.
Brilliant words from all involved and a great voiceover for most of the footage. Would love a transcript of what was said to pull out those gems of insight and inspiration. All put very succinctly and with understanding.
Did the peak just after Edward Abbey passed. Solo trek up and the sw face down. In Memoriam of Ed. Touch the waters as a Shoshone woman told me to do. Mill Creek, Castle Creek. Colorado and the Green. My BOR-BLM YACC work crews went to all of them including Grand Gulch, Dark Canyon, Edge of the Cedars excavation and rehab with a Diné crew. Had to adapt to culture and customs.
Noticing the matching jackets on some of these videos, does the sponsor give these out for each of the adventures? These are epic scenes, really digging the 50/50 as a non skier👍
All the tracks were licensed from Artlist.io. I did the rough edit on this. Some of the songs are available on UA-cam or through other music providers, but most of them are made specifically to be used for video production, so unfortunately not really available for free on the internet.
I live there. Native involvement is minimal if not detrimental to "their own" land. Nevertheless I appreciate you highlighting the area and the need for its preservation.
My first real mountain climb and decent was black lassic in northern California, it was a native lookout spot. 6ker but fun could climb 4 times in a day maybe
"It's my way of pulling a permit." That's a deep, sentimental cut right there. Inspired by these men; grateful for this episode!
Such a great perspective.
Appreciate it! We had a blast
3:43 Love that song, or the translation of that song. Very powerful.

Really value hearing native voices - outdoor spaces are like a family member not just a place to play.
"The way you feel when you stand at the bottom of a line" Thats excactly why we love skiing!

I'm rewatching the series to help ease the lack of snow time. The voice overs of this episode and the Smiley's were great additions.

When he said that we love on planet earth and we need to grasp that. That's a perspective we all need to see.
Great respect for all Natives.
