I'm from Neil Youngs generation. This song is an example of why my generation loved him. He wrote about real issues that needed to be dealt with. He wrote about real people. He is an original super outspoken artist!
Top dog until he tried to get Rogan off spotify by threatening to pull his channel. One of the all-time greats in many ways until dementia set in in more ways than one. Count this as one of our major losses.
Neil never paid any attention to criticism of any kind. Either you liked his music or you didn't he was going to practice his craft no matter what a true artist is what he is.......still ✌️♥️
Agree , he was just 21 when wrote this song , the entire album is a jewel . He made so much money with the album and the song that he bought his ranch with the money . The states from the south never liked hearing the true in a song written by a Canadian . Now the rest loved . Besides all his talent would and did prevail , Neil is a genius .
Neil is a very talented musician, singer & songwriter. He was with the groups Buffalo Springfield & Crosby, Stills & Nash in the later 60's. Also had his own group with Crazy Horse for a few years. Neil went solo & has had so many great songs over the years. And he is not afraid to tackle sensitive issues in his songs.
This LP was played non-stop by millions of people the world over in the early 70's, its riddled with great tunes and powerful lyrics, guitar riffs and solos in his own unique electric style, then I think his other classic 'Harvest' LP followed, again greatly received by the public.
@@joelliebler5690 I think its 'I'll be Leaving You' that really gets you on the album, his vocal is so tender and angst-filled, an and again album that still ranks high up there in rock history.
I absolutely love Neil Young, his music calms me down so much. My sisters and I were molested by our grandpa, my sister and I both had breakdowns, me 2003, her 2006, at Christmas/New Year’s for both of us & we both listened to After The Gold Rush, because it calmed us down.❤❤
Neil, mellow or Neil, angry, I'll take him anyway he wants to play. This was a great LP, and one really needs to experience it. "Cinnamon Girl" and "Down by the River" are two examples. Thanks for sharing, Harri! I always enjoy your posts.
I just loved Neil Young! He was so down to earth and not afraid of showing emotion. I was raised color blind by my parents, and still love and respect Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Thanks so much Harri, stay well and blessed 🙏
I remember "Needle and The Damage Done" very well. Unfortunately, my 32-year-old nephew who was an Attorney, at some point in Law School got addicted to heroin. His older brother found blood on his sleeve. After getting clean for years, he died 12/28/20. He was "dropped off" at the Emergency Room on Christmas Eve afternoon, and was found unconscious in the passenger seat of his vehicle, and his phone and wallet were gone. He never regained consciousness, but was an organ donor. We kept him on a ventilator and he saved 3 peoples' lives, both of his kidneys and his heart. This past Christmas was difficult, but we know he's in a better place. Thanks, Gin🙏
Lynerd Skynerd answered back with the song Sweet Home Alabama, challenging Neil Young not to come south. Loved Neil Young then and now. He did what he wanted damn the consequences.
17 year old guitar player Nils Lofgren hitched his way to California to be with Neil after meeting him backstage after one of Neil's shows. He showed Neil he could play guitar and got an invitation from him to come out to his place. When he arrived, Neil had him play on the album, not as a guitar player but as a piano player, which he had never played, Neil had to teach him! It was also at Nil's suggestion that Neil speed up the instrumental section to a polka beat.
Neil Young does what Neil Young does. He doesn’t stay rooted in any particular style. You earlier reacted to Harvest Moon and expected more or less the same a la Old Man, Heart Of Gold. And he comes out charging with a screamer Southern Man with a damming message on social inequality. Young is considered the progenitor of what was to be called grunge later in the 90s.

Check on the timing of the song OHIO and the change in the Vietnam War direction. I still believe Neil changed the minds of US politicians and was that catalyst for change!!! The power of a song....
I’m so glad you’re doing more Neil!! He’s always been an iconoclast. I’ve followed Neil since 1969 and have seen him too many times to count. One thing is certain, since he began playing music to this day he says he just follows wherever the music takes him. That comes first. By the time this song came out in 1970 Neil was already very famous and could write whatever he pleased but he would have done what he wanted anyway. That’s just one reason why he’s so highly regarded.❤️
This was one of the first albums I ever bought when I was a teen in the '70's. It changed my life. So radical, beautiful and important! Neil is a treasure!!!
Yes, my favourite. I first heard it in 1971 when I was 9. It was the summer soundtrack for many years. The title song is my 2nd favourite but Southern Man is no.1 for me. So powerful. Saying things that were worth saying. It gets the blood flowing and the mind woken.
Ronnie van zant and Neil Young were friends in the end .If you check out Lynyrd Skynyrds last 2/3 years concerts you can see Ronnie wearing Neil Youngs To nights the night tee shirt (l m lucky to have one of origionals) I,ve been reliable informed they were good friends despite their musical lyric differences.😅😅😅
Neil Young is a Canadian legend, who is still doing his thing to this very day. This song, and "Alabama" off his next album led Lynyrd Skynyrd to write Sweet Home Alabama in response. This song was filled with anger and disgust, Alabama takes a more sympathetic tone. You should definitely pull up the lyrics when reacting, they don't always matter a lot in a song, but when they do it's nice to have them for following along and to refer back to. The lyrics are paramount in this song, forcing Neil's guitar hysterics to take a back seat. This isn't always the case, as his guitar-playing is one of his signatures. Check out Down By The River or Like a Hurricane for more of that. Neil Young has a ton of content worth checking out (and a lot that isn't worth it tbh), but deserves a deep dive. He recorded some of the most beautiful and the most ugly music I've heard, and both are amazing.
WHEN HE WAS A YOUNG LAD HIS FAMALY HAD A COTTAGE IN OMEMEE ONTARIO CANADA. ONE DAY MAYBE 5 YEARS AGO HE GAVE A FREE CONCERT IN OMEMEE. ( which only has one stop light ).
Young wrote "Ohio" when he was with CSNY. It's about a killing at Kent State University in OHIO. 4 young people were killed and 9 wounded by the National Guard. The song is a political protest song. Young and the other 3 risked legal troubles with the writing and singing as the government at the time was quite ruthless. Here's the link to Ohio: ua-cam.com/video/l1PrUU2S_iw/v-deo.html
Shortly after it's release, "Ohio" was banned from broadcast in..... Ohio. Gee wonder why? I was in 8th grade, in my choir class when the choir director told us about the Kent State Massacre, which had just happened. Nowadays it feels like I am the only one that still remembers.
I remember this being banned from the radio in the UK....they wouldn't play it on BBC Top 20 show on Radio 1. I wondered why as a 9 year old. Powerful song.
My oldest daughter once asked me about that song. When I told her about the Kent State riots she said of course we studied that in school. She was a little bit shocked when I told her that I was in school when that happened.
A great Neil story: After the attack of Nov 11, Lennon's song "Imagine" was one that was blacklisted from radio -- apparently not nationalistic enough. So on the live memorial musical program about a week after the event, Neil Young sang "Imagine" on TV before millions. Right back at The Man.
Neil Young is of Native American descent and as such has a direct connection to concerns for civil rights issues and social justice. I always admire people who take on "the establishment."
that's the funniest bit of misinformation I've read on UA-cam for...like four minutes. Yep, if you mean the kind of Native American descent that came from places like France and Ireland, then sure!
yeah as others have pointed out Neil was ethnically English and Irish, etc....he has joked that ppl saw him as a Hollywood Indian back in the late 60s because of his look and politics, and of course insisting his backing band name themselves Crazy Horse added to this...they wanted to use War Babies, as they were all born during WWII, pretty sure Neil was right there
All combined, the entire Southern Man musical experience on this site (Neil, the comments, and your insightful feedback, Harri) is nothing short of priceless. Thank you (all) from Toronto.
After the Goldrush is a great album, one of my favourite's. Most of the tracks are quite laid back, but this one is edgy and raw. Given the subject matter it's not surprising. Neil Young is Canadian so being a step away from us politics, he felt able to pass comment on the racial unrest of the 60s.. Great album, great artist, song which doesn't get enough exposure. Neil Young is definitely my favorite artist by far. She can do smooth acoustic music that still rocks and when he whips out his electric guitar it's absolutely mind-bending. I appreciate that you appreciate his music!
This was a landmark album for Neil, he spoke with hard truths about the injustices of a handful of people who inflicted pain a suffer to folks who where oppressed and downtrodden. Neil was an activist and never backed away artistically to from the fight for the cause. I grew up during this period of time he was one of my heroes and a great inspiration to me in my life.
Neil is another great artist. Harry, you are picking some GOATS lately! In the Lynyrd Skynyrd song " Sweet Home Alabama", it was Neil Young they were referring to in the line that ended with " Southern Man Don't Want You Around Anyhow".
The full verse in "Sweet Home Alabama" is "Well I heard Mister Young sing about her Well I heard ole Neil put her down Well, I hope Neil Young will remember A southern man don't need him around anyhow"

And what an amazing guitar player Neil is too. So very unique. I would recommend you Like A Hurricane, the live version from the live album Weld. To me Neil Young is the proof that things don't have to be perfect to be perfect. (if that makes any sense)
Makes perfect sense. RNR is not supposed to be precise. It's supposed to be sloppy and jagged like this song is.
That Makes Perfect Sense….. For this tune, and for many other things in life as well!🐶
Bravo for continuing down the Neil Young road; a masterful Artist!!! If you’d like to hear some “heavier” rock by him, I highly recommend “Cinnamon Girl” and “Down By The River”. He is such a varied artist; please keep going! Happy New Year, Harri!
YOU'D LOVE THE TITLE TRACK OF THIS TOO HARRI : AFTER THE GOLD RUSH :) THERE'S SO SO MANY SONGS THOUGH SO, GLAD YOU LOVE THIS CLASSIC ROCK MUSIC FOR SURE HARRI, HE'S MY 2ND FAVORITE OF ALL TIME.
Neil Young is definitely my favorite artist by far. She can do smooth acoustic music that still rocks and when he whips out his electric guitar it's absolutely mind-bending. I appreciate that you appreciate his music!
Excellent truthful song!! Classic!! ❤ 🇨🇦
Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦😬. “Rockin in the Free World” is one of Neil’s best upbeat songs , but still contains a strong message 👍🏼
Thank you so much for your listen to Southern Man. This song got me thru a real tough patch. Love your depth of analysis.
In my top 5 Neil Young tunes!
Neil like many of his generation had his ups and downs. But this guy rules!
A powerful song.
Neil is another great artist. Harry, you are picking some GOATS lately! In the Lynyrd Skynyrd song " Sweet Home Alabama", it was Neil Young they were referring to in the line that ended with " Southern Man Don't Want You Around Anyhow".
I didn’t know this, thank you
They great thing is that they all became friends and held no animosity towards each other.
The full verse in "Sweet Home Alabama" is
"Well I heard Mister Young sing about her
Well I heard ole Neil put her down
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember
A southern man don't need him around anyhow"
And Van Zant is wearing a Neil Young t shirt on one of the Skynyrd album covers, so there was actually no real animosity.
@@Texascara1 he is mentioned in the song: “Well I heard Mister Young sing about her,
Well I heard ol' Neil put her
down, Well I hope Neil Young will remember, A southern man don't need him around anyhow
Thanks Harri. Always enjoy your reactions. Some great comments below with alot of background on this time and Neil, so I won't repeat them.
"Keep on rockin in the Free World"
NEIL YOUNG wrote " COWGIRL IN THE SAND, CINNAMON GIRL,& DOWN BY THE RIVER" all on the same day lying in bed with the flu, they are all great tunes& show case some of his guitar playing. It's a very deep rabbit hole& you in for a great experience," LONG MAY YOU RUN" give the song OHIO a listen.🇨🇦🇺🇲
That's True ❤️🎶🎸 Greetings from Berlin 👍
Diamond's in my ear's ...
Cool
Yes , Neil put his career on the line with this song as he has many times before and since . Neil Young does whatever the f*** Neil Young wants to do . That's part of his legend . Didn't quite get the Beatles correlation but the piano does give it a slight Lady Madonna vibe
Except stay off of Spotify 🙂
Just thank Niles Lofgren for that piano part. He helped put the bridge part where Neil just takes off what I call early grunge. Great arrangement!
Whoever is playing guitar, is awesome
Agreat guitar solo!!!
Try "Don't Let It Bring You Down" from the 1971 BBC concert. Neil Young is a poet.
