There were days a neighbor, friend or relative would stop by; making for a break from home doings for a short visit over a cup of coffee and coffee cake. Many a time that visitor also lent a hand with a chore at hand and always left a sweet song in the heart. Coffee, coffee cake & a friend make for a great homemade recipe. Now, I’ll do up Ariel’s coffee cake and get word out to a few folks that my welcome mat is out… just like back then. 💝
If anyone's going wear off that treat, real fast, it's you two! My go-to is upside-down cake, with any kind of fruit and nuts. I bet those cherries were good!! You look so proud, as you should!👍😎🇨🇦
I am most definitely going to write down that recipe and have that cake in my oven come this week end, just the perfect partner to accompany my mug of hot tea, me am thinking now to meself, and I am sure I will enjoy every delicious morsel as much as I enjoyed Ariel putting it all together, something about a really good cook going about their business I find most therapeutic and relaxing, find myself almost wanting to go asleep, crazy ol world, crazy ol me more like.
Put a slice of bread in the jar or container with your brown sugar and it will not get hard at all lasting a long time and when the bread gets hard you can just take it out and add a new one, I change it in a couple of months and my brown sugar is soft. Love ❤️ your videos
I have a recipe from a farm wife who was my grandmother's friend (both have passed years ago). Yellow Lard cake makes a basic cake that lends itself to additions of various ingredients. Have used it for decades. Yours looks yummy. Adding to the recipe box.
Thanks Ariel for the recipe, the cake looked really good. I also save my butter wrappers and use them for greasing the dish, but the fire starter was something I didn't know. I learned growing up (in Ohio) to substitute by adding 1 more egg, applesauce, etc. As for favorite cakes, when the weather changes I usually lean towards the apple, pumpkin, etc varieties.
I swear I could almost smell that delicious cake when you held it up to us. One of my favourites is an apple cake with a butter caramel brown sugar topping you cook up on the stove and then pour over the baked cake. Special treat for the fall, cause oh, the sugar! And fall is when we have the best apples.
If you like fruity cakes, maybe take a look into german ( sour) cherry and or apple cakes, rubharb cakes, red currant cakes, etc. ive eaten many different fruitcakes all over europe and i always come back home 😂😅
Loved when my mom used to make zucchini cake and carrot cake… many years in my childhood helping with the veggies for the cakes. I really love upside down pineapple cake and hummingbird cake.
Very nice indeed. I have pineapple in the pantry and will use a dried fruit and nut topping. Thanks for the inspiration and know a well stocked pantry will always feed a family. Enjoy!
Ahhh, no taste-test? 😔 Maybe you could do a real short video of how it came out, cut, consistency, flavor, any changes you would do next time. Sure does look good
That looks delicious! I love recipes that have the versatility to use many kinds of fruits/nuts etc. so you can use up the foods that are getting to the end of their useful lives. Thanks again, Ariel, for a great idea! 🥮🥧
That looks so yummy! My most labor intensive cake was carrot cake. Called for 5 cups of shredded carrots. Fun ones I made were chocolate mayonnaise cake & tomato soup cake😊
@@tolowreading6807 Cakes are the gift that keeps giving😁. The tomato recipe was in church cookbook I bought in Sturbridge Massachusetts decades ago. Hope you like it!
Yum!!! Can you grow rhubarb there? It is looking beautiful now in Iowa. I wonder if I could maybe substitute rhubarb for apples? Thank you. Love your videos!!
I think you could make that substitute if you toss the rhubarb in a little tiny bit of flour first. My mom used to do that to absorb its extra moisture.
That looks scrumptious! I would like raisins in that, or even some chopped apricots. The options are probably almost endless. I'd like to try that nettle cake as well. We called nettle "cowitch" when I was young, and would have never dreamt of eating it. Now it is considered a "superfood". Who knew🤔😂🙃👍✌ Take care Ariel & Clay .... have a nice Wednesday evening🐓🐔🐤🐤🐤
That looks delicious! I was recently wondering how dried cherries would be reconstituted when I wanted to add them to a blueberry crumble. I will definitely trying it. Enjoy!!
I made this after watching you. I have always peeled my apples and was sceptical of it turning out. I used oatmeal, brown sugar, butter and eggnog spice topping as my daughter doesn’t like nuts. It turned out so well! My kids loved it and it was so easy to make!!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!
As it happens, I have all the ingredients in the house except the cherries so you know what I'm baking today! Looks absolutely delicious and one of my favorite kind of cakes with apples, nuts and brown sugar and butter and cinnamon...May I ask, what do you put in your sugar canister? Is it a vanilla bean?
I'm thinking peach, or even apricot coffee cake. I never cared for baked apples 🤷🏼♀️ However I have had tasty results with other recipes by switching apples out for my favorite fruits, berries or peaches.
This looks yummy, I shall give it a try. My favourite cake is my grandma's sultana cake and I sometimes jazz it.up with some dried apricots or dried cranberries.
Looks good. Almost like a plum pudding which is steamed instead of baked. Did you know that you can make your own brown sugar by adding molasses to sugar?
So, I just paused on your nicely written recipe card, took a picture with my phone, and I'm off to make it . I was going to make some apple sauce with my wrinkly apples, but I can make this instead : ) xoxo PS, I sure wish I had some of those dried cherries on hand.
I look forward to trying this recipe, especially the topping part. It's a totally different subject, but I wonder if you would want to do a video on chicken coop design, maintenance, and cleanup. I see a lot of people struggle with this, so I'd be curious how hard and time consuming it is to clean your chicken coop.
I love a good coffee cake! Rada knives are the BEST!! Our local home extension does fundraisers and I've bought them through them. I think I paid around $5-6 a knife. Bought a couple for gifts and a couple for me although my original one is YEARS old and still going strong! Do you drink the cherry juice? I'm hearing it has wonderful health benefits.
Oh, my! That looks wonderful and I imagine it's moist too. Have you ever iced it or poured maple syrup on it? This looked easy enough to throw together for a church social that you forgot about until the day it is happening! Been there and done that! Blessings on you, your family, and any livestock wandering about your homestead!
It’s been a while since I’ve watched one of your cooking videos. Was surprised to see processed wheat flour and white sugar. No judgement, obviously. We eat what we eat. But I thought inflammatory reactions were an issue for you? I’ll try this with some almond flour/unprocessed sugar and see it it works. Always love your content And so cool to see how many people have joined your viewership! Cheers.😊❤️
I missed seeing you do your cooking recipes, it's been awhile. So many things happening now that you're on your own place, when do you find the time to cook every day?
Was that a jar of cinnamon on the counter? Never mind. I jumped the gun! I see it was there for the icing/glaze. Wish I was there to try the finished product.
As someone who does little baking, I always presumed that coffee cakes had coffee as an ingredient 🙄🤪😬 I guess now they are a cake to eat with coffee 🤡
@@damogranheart5521 No, the half quantity yrecioe also specifies a 13'' X 9'' pan. So that would have made a thinner, crisper cake, but this one is thicker and more luscious, I'm sure!
Here in the States in smaller towns or old neighborhoods you call up a neighbor or two to come over for a slice of fresh made cake with a pot of the best fresh brewed coffee. Or tea, or herbal tea. Nice if you have a screened in porch with a small table and a couple of chairs. Good for catching up with what's happening locally!
Rhubarb cake, crisp, pie, anything!anything!

What a wonderful old recipe--will try! Thank you Ariel! Awesome video, as usual! : ) Dawn @ Rich & Dawn in MN :)
Rada are good knives. Cake looks yummy! So good to see cooking video Ariel! Thanks!
Wow! New sub here! I recently made Coffee Cake on my page too and *your dish looks amazing!* Hope to stay connected! 😀

A man with a plan! Good way to start the weekend!
I just wanted to say that I have a coffee cake in the oven right now. I even used my rada paring knife for my apples.
I use a pastry blender like you are using to slice eggs and also to chop them up for egg salad.
I have the same rada knife lol

My favorite from time spent as a child at my Grandma's is Boiled Raisin cake 😍

Apple would be my favorite, I also do blueberries quite a bit. Always nuts, pecans especially. 😊 That looks wonderful 👏

Do you have the recipe written here somewhere?
Yes, if you watch right to the end, there is a shot of the recipe. But that gives half the quantities that Ariel used here.
She doubled it to make a 13x9 pan.
I think that the original was made in the traditional coffee cake pan, a 9x9 or an 8x8.

Why is it coffee cake? It has no coffee in it.?😀
It's a cake you eat when drinking coffee. Or any other time at all!
I make a "mean" carrot cake.
What means a stick of butter?
Here In eastern Europe butter is in grams.😬
So there's no coffee in it?!! A coffee cake in Scotland / UK has coffee as an ingredient 😃
