    This is such a wonderful review on so many levels. Considered, measured, artistic and philosophical. I share your spirit of adventure and discovery whether it’s the mountains or a new town or city. I wear a Tudor BB36 almost all the time for most of the reasons you mentioned. It wears a little bigger than the explorer I’ve tried on but it lacks the accuracy and a little finesse when compared to the explorer, especially around the case and bracelet. The explorer is the next watch I’m saving for.

    • @TheWatchFrame
      @TheWatchFrame  2 роки тому +1

      The BB36 is a great watch I think. I've tried it a few times and was in my short list before the Explorer. I think the memories attached to those watches make them even more important than the watch itself.

    Thank you. This is by far the most balanced review I have viewed on the Explorer 36.
    I visited a Rolex AD yesterday and put myself on the list, which I have to say was a very strange ‘non buying’ experience.
    Your video addressed all of my hopes and fears regarding my future purchase, even though I remain still fairly apprehensive as like you this is my first venture into a watch of this price point by quite some margin. Finally, I smiled when you spoke of detail and proportion having a calming effect on you, I thought I was the only person to experience this from inanimate objects.
    Thank you once again.

    • @TheWatchFrame
      @TheWatchFrame  6 місяців тому

      Thanks for your words. I really appreciate them. The new Explorer is a strange creature to be honest. Now, after three years with it, much has happened. I have even been disappointed a couple of times, but I have reengaged with it and come to appreciate to more levels than I expected. It's difficult to put the finger on what it makes the watch be so special, but again, it has to do with the design and proportions. Sure, it's not a true exploring watch, from the romantic point of view of the term, but a great watch to have in your life and the future. And the watch and the bracelet is one thing that belong together.

      @@TheWatchFrame been going to AD's to see the 124270 in person ... no luck :( ... thinking of buying but one of the things that makes the 1016 a great watch is the readability and that is because the most important things on the dial are the hands...on the 1016 the hands are the first things you see as the indexes and numerals are smaller...on the 124270 i feel you see the numerals first so the 1016 is easier to read than the 124270 at a quick glance ...how do you find it ? its so hard to tell even watching on YOutube videos

    • @TheWatchFrame
      @TheWatchFrame  2 роки тому

      @@davidd1016 well, I wish I could compare this one with the 1016 but I actually never have had the chance to see one in the metal so really can't tell. I guess that if I had the 1016 I probably wouldn't consider the new Explorer, but then again, being vintage you might need to be more careful when in the water. I don't know.
      About legibility and comparing with the closest one to the 1016 I have, the Caravelle Sea Hunter, I really don't find much of a difference to get the time at a glance, but then again I believe the applied hour markers make the watch a different creature by itself. The polished hour hands play very nicely with the hour markers at different angles of light hitting the surfaces and is kind of... how can I put this, relaxing. I think the new Explorer is extremely well balanced in that respect.
      But again, I can't really compare with the 1016 that is still my favorite watch of all times.

      @@TheWatchFrame yes, sorry for the typo. I meant to say that I am absolutely convinced that this will be my next watch. My only other watch I own right now is the Hamilton Khaki Automatic like yours. I wear it daily and I prefer how it looks now all scratched and I even have some dents and weld spatter on it. I certainly won’t be welding with my Explorer but I will happily wear it while swimming, hiking / camping, and in daily use in general. The scratches add character in my opinion. Thanks for your reply

    • @TheWatchFrame
      @TheWatchFrame  2 роки тому

      @@maximilianoesteban8740 no worries. I thought that was what you meant. Yes, the scratches are part of the journey and fixate the fact that we are having an active life that involves the things around us. The watch, somehow, tends to reflect the way we are, the way we behave, in my humble opinion, with other people and the environment too. Maybe that is the reason I like this Explorer so much. Tries to fly under the radar but get the work done. Maybe not fancy and not in an exuberant way, but with elegance and determination.

    • @TheWatchFrame
      @TheWatchFrame  10 місяців тому

      @@GroomsJk I was 196 cm tall but now I'm probably more 195 cm like you too and my wrist is around 18.5 cm, so. pretty close. I got the watch in 2021, and was one of the first to be able to buy and review the new 36mm one. The 40mm has only been launched recently although some many more years earlier I tried the 39mm, but wasn't that much into watches (and they offered it to me at back at the day 4.000 euros retail + discount). The 39 looked very good on me to be honest. Only I personally like classic looking watches as they are less intrusive and believe more versatile. When I started my new passion for watches I found the 38mm Hamilton Khaki Field automatic to be too small so I got the 42 only to realize, months later, that had been a bad decision for me and sold it. I rediscovered the Exploer 1016 (my grail) and was unsure about the 36mm size being as tall as I am. Got a cheap 36 design copy watch of the Explorer 1016 and after a few weeks I was sold to this size.
      It takes time for the size to settle. I think the size works only some people might not be prepared.
      I can wear anything from 34 to 43 without a problem. 36-39 and even up to40-41 for divers and GMT is my goldilocks zone.
      In the case of the Explorer, the 36 make is more a dressy elegant watch and right now is being used as such, and not a lot of time. Other than that I take the Summiteer 36.5mm that wears like a 37.5 watch to true explorations and feel very good with them.
      I'd suggest to give the watch a couple of weeks for the size to settle, but if not happy, I don't think it will be too difficult to reach for the 40mm one which, having the same dial proportions, would wear more like a 39 watch and be quite alright too.

    • @GroomsJk
      @GroomsJk 10 місяців тому

      @@TheWatchFrame Wow. Thank you for the comprehensive reply. It is very helpful. I am glad to have an interaction on this subject with someone who is my size. There are a few reasons why I was surprised by the size. 1) The size appears large in pictures and video; even the pictures I took of myself recently. 2) Before buying this watch, I was wearing my Apple Ultra for my triathlon training and business. That watch is a whopping 49mm. 3) Finally, the previous luxury watches I have owned were the 119900 Rolex (price got so high I decided to cash out) and the Seiko SLA025 which I sold because it didn't make sense to own a 5K watch that had an accuracy +7s/d. These watches measured 40mm and 45mm, respectively. I will take your advice and wear for a few weeks and see if the size grows on me. Moreover, it will give me an opportunity to wear with my business attire. I am in sales and dress in a suit or jacket when visiting customers. I like this Rolex because I am a very active person who enjoys mountaineering, surfing and fitness in general. So, my plan is to wear it all the time regardless of the magical appearance of scratches:). From a design POV, I think Rolex would have been better served to hit the middle of the 36 and 39 widths and keeping the 20mm LW. Then the 40mm release would not have been necessary. Finally, do you think this watch will be discontinued? If it is, it will likely become a great investment overnight like the Sea Dweller 116600 that I owned. Again, thanks for the commentary and very nice videos. J

    My wrist is a bit shy of 18.5 cm, I'm quite tall, and I am a thick guy. I think someone like me could be worried about the size or what other people may think, BUT I do not find it small at all. It wears great on me and on anyone who wears one. Only people with some confidence issues scream about it. So I totally agree with you. Wear the watch you want to wear. It is a classic beauty!!

    • @TheWatchFrame
      @TheWatchFrame  2 роки тому +1

      Very well expressed. Yes I was hesitant about 36mm sizes at first, based basically on the comments of other people, until I tried one and realized it was the perfect size for a field watch. This is important, because the size related to a type of watch is very important too. I find then this 36mm a very good one. Even if it's actually 35,4mm it feels a bit bigger than other 36 and 36,5mm I had the chance to compare recently. Don't know, maybe the dial makes it appear a bit larger or with more presence although the bracelet is thinner. But nevertheless, while hiking it's a wonder.
      More people should try theses sizes for themselves and yes, not worry so much about what others think as there will always be different approaches to watches. To each their own.

    I’ve had this watch since May of 2021. It’s my grail watch. My initial experience was a bit surprising since I’m not used to wearing watches below 38mm. It took about a week to get used to it. Since then, I have enjoyed wearing it anywhere and in every occasion. It’s a watch that only the wearer notices and enjoys - Flying under the radar is a good thing esp in crowded places. My Bigeye gets noticed more than my explorer. It really is a piece that every collector should have.

    Absolutely brilliant! It was great to see a review where the watch is clearly being used for purpose, rather than kept in a box and pulled out to make YT videos. The only element that puts me off of the Explorer is that I spend so much time in water (not deep any more, necessarily, but frequently) and I'm not sure that I'd have confidence in the seal (if anyone can share experience of that I'd be grateful). Thanks for there video ;-)

    • @TheWatchFrame
      @TheWatchFrame  11 місяців тому +1

      Thanks to you for commenting. I have to confess lately I'm not taking the watch out a lot and use the Traska Summiteer most of the time while exploring, but from what I have seen from my watchmaker serving decades old Rolexes I do trust their seal and even more than the ones of other watches and I would include some of the divers I have. The Explorer, and other sport Rolex model for that matter are really over-engineered. My main concern though is not about water resistance, this watch can handle even snorkeling without any issue, but hitting or losing it. It's a lot of money to risk. If that is not much of a concern, this watch sure withstands frequent water. It is design for that purpose and the gasket and double crown lock is reassuring.

    I find it amusing that you mention the "scratched Rolex problem" which is due to 904 steel being softer than 316. Funny how rolex never mentions this....

And I'm so tempted each time I see at the same AD I got the Explorer... Fabulous review. I can relate to many aspects touched on here. Especially "calming", not only when on the wrist but in relation to the hobby itself. The perspective this watch gives to one's collection is hard to under-estimate. Unboxing my 1996 Explorer was a unique experience. Hard to describe without sounding completely mad, so let's just say I felt a great sense of peace. Kevin O'Leary often remarks on his Watch Collecting addiction... "Oh, it's a disease". The Rolex Explorer is probably the most effective cure...well for those of us who aren't extremely wealthy investors :)
    The Rolex Explorer is an Icon, the most perfect watch ever made and yet almost completely anonomous. How is this possible?

    • @TheWatchFrame
      @TheWatchFrame  2 роки тому

      Yes, that is a gre
      at question. My take is that the design, size and features allow the watch to fall in between the cracks, hills and valleys of the everyday life. It is there to be reliable and to be seen when needed, but understated and "smallish" when you don't want to be in the middle screaming for attention.

      Thanks a lot and great for your decision. However I have to confess that ever since this review my thoughts about the watch have changed a bit so I want to make clear that now I have some second thoughts and I might even sell the watch in the future. I'm preparing a video about this, but in short, be aware that it is a very expensive watch to repair and maintain. Hard to replace and it's probably not the best option for mountaineering. I know, that's not much of a surprise, but now that I'm going back to the mountain almost every weekend, I never take it with me. It's too soft, easy to scratch and difficult to change straps as to be a real "exploring watch". Don't get me wrong. It's a great current life exploring watch, only it doesn't really belong on the mountains or adventures, and it's more a watch to explore civilized XXI century environment. The movement is awesome, so is the size and the design. This watch can last a few generations if properly kept and is very precise and will look good with any attire. Right now I'm basically using it for formal occasions as kind of a dress watch while not exactly that. I believe this watch embodies a true tribute and homage to the Explorers of the past. But again, if you want to have it, and can afford to maintain it, go ahead. It's beautiful.
