Explorer vs. Ranger, Summiteer and Alpinist as an Adventure Watch

How does the modern Rolex Explorer compare as a true exploring and adventure watch against some competitors like the Traska Summiteer, the Tudor Ranger and even the classic Seiko Alpinist SARB017? Here my humble, and probably flawed, approach.

The Explorers Journey: My alternatives to the Rolex Explorer
hello. I enjoyed the review. I previously purchased the Falcon 3, but sold it because of the cheap feel of the hands. I'm curious about the Rambler you reviewed. From the video it looks like it's just coloring.
I have the Falcon III now too, and it's my favorite one right now. Yes, the hands could be improved. That's totally true. I might brush them to give some texture and improve legibility. Regards the Rambler, the hands are thermal blue and very dark. I like them. Better quality and finishing.
Great review, looking into buying one soon
Thanks! Sometimes, a second hand one appears for sale. I'd suggest to check Chrono24 for them. Hope you find one!
The Tudor Ranger is probably the closest you can get to perfection. So much better than an Explorer.
As an adventure watch, it sure is one of the best options. I'd change a few things here and there, but a very solid option indeed.
I’m watching this 11 months later. Did you end up selling it? I hope not! I’m cheering you on! Just because you may not want to use it as it was intended doesn’t mean you have to sell it. You can still enjoy it as an everyday or special occasion watch, still knowing that you did have some adventures with it and now it’s “retired”. I hope to get one someday.
Hi, thanks for commenting. No, I have kept it. For the moment at least, I want to have it. It's such a great watch in general, and for pure adventure use I take my Lorier Falcon III or the Traska Summiteer. I do as you have suggested. If I needed the money would have to sell it, but we'll see.
Glad to hear it! But of course I understand if you need the money. I had sold my BB58 when I needed the money, but was able to get it back later on. If money isn’t a factor though, it is such a fantastic watch indeed!
@@VMIyanks04 glad to hear you got that watch back. Of course, family responsibilities always comes first.
Great review/comparison. Thanks!

Who won the DESIGN sir?❤😊
Nice video😊 Something for me. I'm just bought explorer 36 from ad and thinking about 40 🙄 for my 8 inch wrist better is Ranger what i have too but it's too big and heavy for Expedition 😅 Thanks Good work 🫡
Yeah, the Ranger is on the heavier side for sure. If it was 38mm and 11mm high, that would be awesome. People say the 40mm Explorer is more 38-39 than actually 40, but I still like more the classic size, but that's very much personal preference.
@TheWatchFrame I think Ranger is great piece. I use it all day in work ( dental technik ) and it's very comfort and beautyfull to look for it not like on the pictures. It's cheep 😆 great value for money and i can do what I want to do. That's reall bullet proof instrument and great looking Mans Watch for me. Rolex is expensive and something like grail for me and I don't know it make's me happy for real 😄✌️
Nice video😊 Something for me. I'm just bought explorer 36 from ad and thinking about 40 🙄 for my 8 inch wrist better is explorer what i have too but it's too big and heavy for Expedition 😅 Thanks Good work 🫡
Always a fan of an exhibition case back. And it still has how many meters of water resistance? That's just fine by me.. For me, a big part of getting a mechanical watches seeing the mechanics, even if it's an outsourced movement, I still like to see and that movement is no slouch.
Of course, to each their own. I believe that tool watches should focus on being tools without having to display anything else but what's necessary, and the 556i being such an example, the exhibition case seems a bit like an unnecessary embellishment. Other superior models don't have that feature. Also, this is another weak spot that could have been avoided. In general, if someone tells me about the movement inside, I will believe them, but yes, they are a joy to watch. Personally, I feel see through cases less comfortable on my wrist. There's the possibility that glass has a higher friction point than steel, but in general, simple flat brushed back cases feel better.
It’s amazing how much larger it looks on the bracelet. But on the leather it looks very traditional. And I agree that the yellow markers don’t even look like fake patina. That’s a hard thing to get right. And I really think they did it. I may pre-order one.
It's a very nice watch. You won't be disappointed if you get it.
I just got my first order from them, it went fine however the quality of the straps is very poor and the lengths are way too short. The moon straps show way too much velcro.
Thanks for your comment. Yes, the quality is quite poor. I had many issues with the leather ones. They would break and open after a few weeks, something I've not experienced with other leather straps, even with cheap AliExpress ones, that, as a matter of fact, hold up remarkably well.
Just got the 36mm summiteer. Not sure if I’m going to keep it. The case finishing is beautiful, bracelet is very comfortable, and it’s running +1 second per day. As far as negatives, the lume is downright terrible and I think the whole thing looks just a bit too much like the original explorer. At the end of the day though, there’s not many affordable 36mm options, and even less that are 10.5mm thick. Thinking about trading it for a damask ds30
Well, the Summiteer is a true homage of the Explorer, but I personally think, it really has its own design language. But like anything, to each their own. In my case, my unit and least, and another I had that I recently sold, both had excellent lume. Not like the lume of my Explorer, but better and more legible than many others of my watches. It might be something on your specific lume which raises some QC questions, to be honest. Now I got the Lorier Flacon III and I'm very happy with it. It does have some very original ideas and concepts in place, while being too a very true homage to the Explorer 1016. However the lume is worse than the one of the Summiteer, not to mention the Explorer, of course. But I really dig the vintage vibes and the plexy glass. I love it for that. And it's 11mm, however you don't really notice much difference comparing with the Summiteer. Something to consider. Oh, and the Damasko looks awesome. Great option, but well, 39mm. Nice nevertheless and very much original and very tough!
Very good. A real watch lover in charge of a company can make a good product for a lower price. The Chinese love watches and make great stuff.
And they are improving fast!
Thanks for Great video! 👌
Thanks!
Author, thank you for reviewing this wonderful watch. The hands and marks on the dial are very harmonious. Good luck and prosperity to the channel.
Thanks a lot!
The best watch video I have seen in many years! Honest, open minded and humble - you come across as a highly reflective person, that make choices based on who you are, and not what the medias tells us to choose. Bravo for that! (You of course have a new subscriber☺️)
Thanks so much. I feel so honored reading comments like this one. I try to do my best and stay away of media trends. Thanks again.
Summiteer by far the toughest. The main requirement for adventure.
Very solid indeed.
Great review. You found very beautiful words for your watch.
Thanks!
I have the Falcon 3 and love it. Gives me that classic look and feel but in a very reliable newer movement. Its my everyday watch.
Right now it's my everyday watch too! It's so pretty and comfortable.
Just picked it up! I love the little triangles above the numerals. The watch has a lot of great details that make it stand out in a crowd.
Congratulations. Yes, it's a very elegant, nice looking piece. Enjoy it!
@The Watch Frame, I have done a little digging and it seems you are not alone about problems with this particular Rolex movement: ua-cam.com/video/Lzqh2kroYIw/v-deo.htmlsi=bHU7-NGvwKuXQGIB If Rolex are indeed being inundated with complaints maybe their sales staff are stalling customers to deal with the backlog of repairs, who knows?
Thanks! Truth be told, it was Rolex Spain staff with solved the issue in this particular case. The AD is another story.
@@TheWatchFrame Good to hear it worked out for you.
I like it but wouldn't buy it because of the lume colour.
@@finesse49 I kind of like it. It's very original. Different from all the rest.
Thank you very much for this video.
As a friend of mine said long ago, the luxury addiction is the strongest of all addictions and causes the most pain and suffering to the most amount of people (ie, directly and indirectly)
Yes it does!
In this category of watches, I own the Ranger and the white dial Alpinist SPB119 (known as the Ghost Alpinist). Oh and also the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical white dial. And the GMT Alpinist limited white dial lol. The Ghost Alpinist is a keeper, as it was a real mission to find one in new condition after it became discontinued. I imported it from Japan and they're becoming quite scarce these days. I'll sell the GMT Alpinist. The Ranger is a good watch and one which has grown on me, however I'm considering trading it in towards a different piece (Black Bay Monochrome?) I don't wear the Hamilton much, but it is a cool watch and looks good on practically any strap, so I'm currently undecided whether it'll stay or go.
The ghost Alpinist is awesome. Yes keep it. About the GMT Alpinist I was a bit underwhelmed when I saw it in person, while in pictures looks great. My first "serious" watch was a Hamilton but sold it after realizing it was too big for my taste. Now I have a Benrus 3061 Steve McQueen and I really like, although it is 12mm high or more, 39.5 and has no screw down crown. Each time I put it on, it's hard to put anything else. This proves to me that you need to try, and if it works, then great, if not, then sell,
Another great video analysis, Mario....great information. I agree with you on your decision 100%. You kept one of two high value luxury models, choosing the Explorer which I agree is a more ideal size. And you kept one of the two lower priced, but highly versatile adventure watches. I never understood why the Alpinist falls into the same category as the Explorer and Ranger. It's much less legible and with it's cathedral hands and gold numbers. Yes, the compass feature is helpful, but at the cost of the pushers and extra case thickness which I personally don't think is a good trade-off. So yes, you made the same choices I would have. I think you'll now enjoy the remaining watches much more without fewer distractions. Congrats and happy upcoming Holidays to you and your family.
Thanks a lot and happy Holidays for you and your family too. Yes, the Ranger and the Alpinist are great of their own, but mainly the size puts me a bit off. Matter of ever-changing taste :)
7:22 - What are you talking about a tool watch being too “tool-ish”?! It’s like saying coffee tastes too “coffee-ish” so you deduct a point. Just say you’re keeping the Rolex for the brand & I would at least respect that much. If Rolex sells a shit in a box; you’ll be first in line to get one!
Thanks for commenting. What I try to say is that, as a watch alone, the Ranger is a real example of an adventure tool watch, which is a big advantage in the other comparison I made of these four watches as true exploring and adventure ones. But when talking about a watch alone, where the adventure aspect is not that important, it's not that elegant. The original idea, actually, was to substitute the Explorer for this one, but they are very different, and I believe they both have space in any collection. I would love to be able to keep both, but I simply can't. The Explorer, on the other hand, is not that much of a true exploring watch anymore and has quite a few flaws I have talked extensively about. But if I have to pinpoint something, the main reason I'm selling the Ranger, and have sold the Alpinist, is because of the size. And that's entirely personal. I prefer smaller watches. Again, I have nothing against the Ranger. It's a great watch. For me, and I repeat, for me, if it was 36 or 37 mm, and around 11mm high, with polished bezel and white lumed markers and hands and would keep the 20mm lug width, it would be the chosen one for sure. There are very few Rolex watches I like at all, and the Explorer is the one I like most. But I'm also very happy with the Traska Summiteer, very capable one, or the Lorier Falcon III.
If you are going to discount price, availability, and maintenance, for the reasons you provided, then I’d argue that historical relevance and brand recognition go out the window too. As you said, if you like the watch, you will get it. In that case these other points also don’t matter as much. Dropping those categories as well brings the Summiteer basically in line with the Alpinist, and not far from the Ranger.
That is a good point and maybe the reason I'm so happy with the Traska, although I have another direct connection with that watch.
I bought the Explorer because it was 36mm and fits my 6.2” wrist better than most watches. I thought about other watches such as the Ranger,IWC Mk XX, Sinn 556 or Smiths Everest. I decided that I simply wanted the Explorer, not something that looked like it. I also have an Omega Aqua Terra, arguably another GADA watch, but the polished links in the bracelet means it is a bit less versatile.
Yes, the Explorer is great and feels amazing on the wrist.
The issue is; if your comparing Rolex and alternatives, you will not be happy with the alternatives. It’s like having an etch on one arm and scratching the other arm. Save your money and buy the watch you like otherwise you will not be satisfied. The other watches seen are great, but not a satisfying buy.
That is very much truee too. My point is that if you like the watch., and it is within your budget, yes, go ahead, but I've come to realize that the "alternatives" can be quite satisfying too. But for all of them you need to really connect and use them.
I really like Traska designs but I have 8” wrist and wish for 40mm
The 38.5 mm wears quite big. I'd say close to a 40.
Keep the Baltic Tourer, oh wait , you don’t have one.
I don't. I'm curious about that watch, to be honest. Hope to try one in the future.
I think the video was great. Thanks for making it. I own the newest version of the 36 summiteer in black and I love it. I aspire someday to own the explorer. For now, I’m as happy as I can be. Thanks again.
Thanks to you for commenting!
Out of all of these I actually like the look of the Traska the most and it does somthing none of these other watches do by having a hardness coating on it and it does it at an amazing price. The Traska should have gotten a higher score in build quality because of that coating I think. It will hold up better than any of these watches over time. Also the movement should have gotten a higher score than the Alpinist because the Miyota 9000 series is a much better movement than the 6R from Seiko. This is just my opinion of course.
Actually in the video about the watch as an exploring, adventure watch, the scratch resistance is, I think, more relevant and there the Summiteer shines. Also be aware that at the end of the day I'm keeping that one, and the Alpinist got sold. I will also sell the Ranger. I believe that speaks volumes. Here I argue as a watch alone and, of course, subjectivity plays a huge role, on my side too. The 9000 movement is great, don't bet me wrong, but I have seen a lot of variations there, on par with the Seiko one.
I would keep the explorer and the alpinist. Sell the other two and look at another watch with different materials like titanium, ceramic etc complications like a chronograph or perpetual calendar.
Came to say this 👌
I've been thinking a lot about this, but at the end of the day the fact was that I wouldn't wear the Alpinist almost ever. I guess I didn't really connect, while I have a very strong connection to the existence of the Summiteer 36mm. And we have lived quite a few adventures.
Very interesting Video! Thank you! The funny thing is, that i sold my Alpinist yesterday too...
Wow, what a coincidence.
I love the Ranger, but I really hope they come out with one in 36mm someday.
That would be awesome.
I have Rolex Explorer 36 and black dial Alpinist Spb117j , I do not need other watches,.... unfortunately I have like 50 more....lol🤣🤣🤣

nice to see a true review, not a paid or loan video from Nezumi..it's not a collar GMT ! it's a true GMT as you set the GMT then the local time.
I'm afraid, this is the first version with the NH34 with the jump hour GMT hand. The current version has the Miyota 9075 that has the jump hour local hand and that's a flyer, travellers GMT.
@@TheWatchFrame oh, that's too bad, so you can buy the watch today and still have the older version ?
@bonnystarks no. I got this long ago, the first version. If you buy now, it will be the one with the Miyota.
@@TheWatchFrame ok thank you for the info ;) keep p the good work.
We need a comparison with the Rambler, Explorer and the Summiteer!
Thanks for the proposal. I will be preparing a video about true homages, copy designs and originals with the Explorer, Falcon III, Summiteer and Addiesdive. Kind of similar but another beast. I guess a video with the Summiteer, the Falcon and the Explorer could be nice. The Rambler, although the only difference is the dial, I believe is a different beast.
Great video! Very well done.
Thanks a lot.
No date GMT seems an odd choice. I like no date diver and no date explorer, but a no date GMT doesn't work for me.. It needs crown guards too.
I had the same opinion at the beginning, but after owning it, being an office callers GMT, I don't miss the date, basically ever. I'm even guessing I wouldn't mind it in a flyers GMT either, but that's just my personal take. To each their own. About the crown guards, I'd say the crown is slightly sunk in the case and doesn't bother me it not to have them, but if that's a must, I'd advise you to check the Christopher Ward Sealander. That one is thinner, with crown guards and date.
Great watch! Congrats. I considered it, before I bought my Explorer 36. At the time, it did not catch me, as I considered it to be sort of a substitute for the RLX. Now, as I own the Rolex, I still think about it, since I shy away from wearing the Explorer as a genuine Outdoor, watch. First World Problems 😅
Yes, the Ranger is made to be used in more dire situations. The Explorer belong in a more civilized environment. Both a very strong and work as adventure watches, but the Ranger takes the edge here.
@@TheWatchFrameAnd still, I can not justify buying another watch for my other watch to stay scratch-free. Feels strange, though. I decided to treat the Explorer as if it was a tool watch. Problem solved… for now 😁
@@esbee1177 yes, that's a solution. I'm now selling the Ranger as I'm wearing the Traska Summiteer or the Loriers I just got when going to the mountain and so. I do sometimes take the Explorer, but not that often.
I just recently picked up my new 124270 Explorer and I must say I'm smitten 😍. Previously I had a 114270 for a short time but I purchased it pre-owned and it had some crown issues and I sent it back for my refund. With that said I fell in love with the Explorer and I was bummed when I sent it back. I immediately put my self on the wait list for this newer model. Now that I have it I couldn't be happier. I own several Rolex watches Inc 2 Datejust, 36mm OP and a 2019 Submariner Date. Out of all of my Rolex watches this is becoming my favorite. Thanks for an amazing review 👍
Congratulations. I have always wondered how this compare in real life with the 114270. I have a very limited experience with that one. The great thing about the Explorer, in general, is how subtle it is. You forget you wear it, but when you realize it's on your wrist, you can tell its presence.
When’s the review coming out?
I am writing the script right now. I hope to finish the script in a few days, then record and edit. It might take a couple of weeks or so to be finished.
Great can’t wait! Hopefully it’s out before they release it again in December.
@@a_commisso77 hope so. I'm working on the review right now. But still b-roll and off the camera audio recording before starting the editing.
Congratulations my friend! Do love a Lorier!
Thanks a lot my friend! This is a cracking watch!
Congratulations! It's a beautiful watch to have, actually now it's my everyday watch. I'm obsessed with watchmaking and design elements and I did saw your video about the arrow hand proposal with the Neptune, and of course I agree with you 1000%. Then when I got my Falcon III (also second hand), I just can't lived with the polished finished hands, so I re-finished them to be brushed and I LOVE IT, so much legible on any light condition. Now I'm planning to engrave the case back because it's all mine now. Regards and congrats again!
Thanks a lot! Wow, your idea of brushing the hands sounds very appealing to me. I would love to see images of that. Would it be possible? I have my channel description (hitting more): www.youtube.com/@TheWatchFrame. Maybe I could use the images in my review with the proper credit. Although I haven't had any issues so far regards legibility, I recognize that would be an improvement, and I'm very curious about it.
@@TheWatchFrame For sure! I made a short Reel about it, I sent you the link to your Instagram inbox. :)
@@medicenquillos thanks! Just saw it! How cool is that. Awesome. I might do this after the review is over.
This channel should get much much more views and subs. No brand pushing, no BS just observations and honest opinion. As a watch enthusiast I feel bad for not having seen this channel before. Well done. Keep them coming please. Subscribed 👍
Wow, thanks a lot for your words. Please, don't feel bad at all. Your kind words do really compensate anything else. I really appreciate that. I guess I'm not the kind of person who thinks so low of the viewers to push them to subscribe each time, and I tend to stay away from social networks. I do this channel because I love watches, photography and history. One reason I might not grow fast is because it takes quite some time for me to put a video together. I try to make them the way I'd like to see videos, and that's a lot of work. But well, right now I'm working on two videos, so I expect to have more videos published soon.
