Yeah - it's another form of punk, and hard-rock and other-stuff etc but I think you can definitely point to consistent aesthetics within what were calling grunge and say that they did being to a new sound, a new category, a new way of arranging rock, punk etc. The way the guitars were used and the challenging vocal aesthetics were something very new and distinctive - now they are very familiar and so we forget that it was replacing rock/guitar/punk music that was very different.

I bought “Louder Than Love” around this time. I listened to it a few times and put it away. I wasn’t ready for it yet. By spring the following year (1990) I was splitting up with my wife and everything was a mess. I rediscovered the album and suddenly it all made sense. I was instantly a life long fan. Thanks for sharing this rare treat!
Totally understand. I heard King's X first album around 1988, and it just didn't resonate with me at the time. Fast forward about a year later and their 2nd album comes out, and they become one of my all time favorites. We get the music we need, when we need it in life.
Incredibly grateful that you shared this video. I guess everyone's entitled to an opinion but who are the five assholes that didn't like this video. I saw them on this tour three times and then another two times at lollapalooza. I've always love their music And I always thought Audioslave was very good too and now I find myself really getting into his solo work. I just feel so incredibly sad for what you went through and I hope he is resting in peace. God bless his family

SO GOOD. ....this is just before Chris Cornell realized how hard it actually is to play guitar, that the underrated + awesome Kim Thayil had everything covered (on his own), and that he was in his own way: that the band was better served if he just focused on singing/performing.
RIP Chris. And thanks to the uploader of this video... I found out how cool is Jason Everman. Amazing dude! In September 1994, influenced by Renaissance icon Benvenuto Cellini (who stated that a well-rounded man is an artist, warrior and philosopher), he left Mind Funk to join the United States Army, subsequently serving with the Army's 2nd Ranger Battalion and later with the Special Forces, serving tours in Afghanistan and Iraq.[4] After completing his tour of duty with the Rangers, he took a break from the service and lived in New York City where he briefly worked as a bike messenger. He then traveled to Tibet and worked and studied in a Buddhist monastery before returning to the U.S. He reentered the Army when offered the chance to join Special Forces. After receiving an honorable discharge in 2006, Everman went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Columbia University School of General Studies on May 20, 2013.[4] General Stanley A. McChrystal wrote a letter of recommendation for his application.[1] In September 2010, Everman conducted an interview with Music Life Radio detailing his life.[5] In July 2013, The New York Times published a portrait on Everman, written by guitarist and writer Clay Tarver.[1] The article features interviews with Everman, his family members, former band colleagues, music industry people, and soldiers. A 2014 The Daily Beast interview mentions that Everman was invited to and attended Nirvana's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, that he lives in New York, has participated in writing workshops and "still goes overseas regularly, working as a consultant for the military."[6]
If ever a mic stand deserved Chris's wrath, it was this one. Bless him, he didn't let it stop him from blasting the paint off the walls with his incredible voice. Magnificent gem of a video, thank you so much!
so simple the place, looks so fuckin' awesome the the perfomance of them. (70's feelings)....I've never seen this video before....fuckin' great!!!! now Chris and his voice are inmortal and part of the whole Universe also. \../
I saw Soundgarden in New York City at the Armory back in spring 1994 and I just want to say their venue was kick ass probably the greatest I have been to besides The Cult, Metallica, and Guns n' Rose's. I'm glad I went to the show because I never had another opportunity because of sell out concerts, you have to take a chance if you can get to any show...
P.s. Judges of Cornell's voice here: their sound is raw in this and many early shows. Cornell, in the beginning, was all power and only partly melodic; his pitch was usually imperfect (maybe owing to how loud they were). There was a marked difference between his days with Soundgarden, even when they released 'Down on the Upside', and his later voice, when he'd matured and was covering everything from 'Nothing Compares...' to 'I Will Always Love You'. He was at the height of his powers in the last few years; his tone was perfect; his pitch was on nearly all of the time; and everything coalesced beautifully. I don't think he was so mindful of his pitch and being 'in voice' until sometime around 'Euphoria Morning'. Nevertheless, he shows his range here on 'Beyond the Wheel' and it sounds relatively effortless. He was monumentally talented as a singer and songwriter, and that's why so many of his peers and following acts are paying homage to him.

Wow...you can see, even back then, that this dude at the mic was a freaking rockstar!!!! I would have joined a band with him singing instantly....no questions asked. One of the best voices ever, even in it's raw form like it is here.
This man had THE MOST AMAZING voice ever!!...especially hitting those high notes! 😱...u are TRULY MISSED!!
Best to ever do it!! Fucking legend
I love the hell out of this. Thanks for posting, Mike.
thank you for putting this shit out! the guys voice stopped me in my tracks when I first heard soundgarden! I mean his fucking voice sounded like a Marshall major 200 watt amp ×10! damn I'm still sad from the news! my heart goes out to his wife and children as well as the Seattle fans and fans all over the world. r.i.p superstar!
Wow! Thank you so much for uploading this. Incredible album, incredible talent. This is music that still gets me through. RIP Chris. You are loved. You are missed.
Come to my FB page Chris Cornell Fanclub. Would love to have you.
Dude, You RocK! Thanks so much for creating your beautiful Soundgarden Stuff! Missing him so much...... Chris Cornell forever lives on through his music. Peace, Love & Rock n RoLL!
I know why Jason Everman never worked out, that’s a “New Coke” on his amp that he was drinking.
Young and full of piss and vinegar, as they should be. Thanks for sharing this gem.
There were very few of us ready for this kind of "heavy" in 89.
Yep, took me till Badmotorfinger in '91.
THIS is how I will always remember him and soundgarden. Thank you for this precious upload.
The early days of Grunge music. Glad I was part of that era as a teen. It was good time!
He was a rock star even then
28:11 - That note opens o portal to another world.
wow soundgarden 89 crushing the westwood record store - awesome!
kim rockin' the saint Vitus t shirt
I'm really liking Matt's "Crypt Kicker 5" shirt.
Matt has St. Vitus shirt in Loud Love music video too if I remember correctly.
When I was playing bass for Bloody Mary in North Carolina, this is what was happening on the west coast. Pretty humbling thought.
you were my best friend in my years of youth.Always in my heart.Rest in the superunknown
Kostas Kaidantzis love from Chris.
Sounds so heavy on far beyond the wheel, kim has a great tone
Money cant give what the truth takes away
I bought “Louder Than Love” around this time. I listened to it a few times and put it away. I wasn’t ready for it yet.
By spring the following year (1990) I was splitting up with my wife and everything was a mess.
I rediscovered the album and suddenly it all made sense. I was instantly a life long fan.
Thanks for sharing this rare treat!
Totally understand. I heard King's X first album around 1988, and it just didn't resonate with me at the time. Fast forward about a year later and their 2nd album comes out, and they become one of my all time favorites. We get the music we need, when we need it in life.
@@timcwalker Agreed!
That 4 octave vocal is absolutely insane. I still can’t believe he’s gone.
Nobody disliked this video, what are you talking about?
wow, this just came up in my feed.. hell ya! Beyond the wheel is killer!!! god damn, RIP Chris
Chris' vocals on Beyond the Wheel...holy f... he was the best.. now you're rockin heaven Miss you always 💖
Life moves fast! SG definitely changed my life! I was a child when they performed this; but the 90s SG would be my first introduction into Seattle grunge! Missin’ CC! So iconic!
Unbelievably amazing...Thanks for the upload... Soundgarden is ... Can't find the words...So inspired and so technically capable of doing whatever they wanted to do...
RIP Cris :(. Truly a sad day for rock.
YES, YES, YES!!! This is so fucking cool. Thanks heaps, this is how he would want us to grieve as well. Celebrate the fact we grew up listening to rock at it's finest hour. Turn it up to 11! rip Chris
So amazing otherwordly. AMAZING!!!!
Chris was insanely gorgeous right here, I'm sure he had a lot of haters with having it all, looks, body, and talent, just wow!
Oddly enough, he married two ugly bitches. I guess physical beauty in a man doesn't help much...
@@afonsodeportugal Susan Silver was, still is gorgeous!
@@afonsodeportugal as fucked up as it was I laughed too fast at this comment. But Susan was pretty in my opinion however no comment on his last wife
My heart literally skipped a few beats when he was singing with his hair out of his face. I imagine a few hearts stopped in that crowd as well, thinking whaaaaat? He was both insanely talented and shockingly beautiful all in one.
So lame. I'll say it again, a woman's appreciation of music comes down to how attractive they find the singer.
Never seen him look more comfortable playing and singing
Last local Record Theatre store just announced closing here in Buffalo, NY...times change...hard to fathom...history like this is super cool...thank God it was captured!
I don’t think I’ve ever heard Cornell hit notes higher than in this version of Beyond The Wheel!
F*cking incredible.
what's funny is I probably saw them live a day before or after this in San Diego.
Thank you for posting this. Our hearts are broken.
i can't believe it's never going to happen again. it's painful to watch this and hear his voice in the songs that now have different meaning.
Baby Chris. Missing you, even now Chris.
HANDS ALL OVER WOW ALWAYS AN AMAZING SING..JUS ELECTRIC LIVE..
Awesome video and quality!!! Been a Soundgarden fan since 90 and i will always be a fan! R.I.P Chris Cornell a true Poet and a Legend!! Your so missed!! 👊😎
R.I.P. Chris
SO GOOD. ....this is just before Chris Cornell realized how hard it actually is to play guitar, that the underrated + awesome Kim Thayil had everything covered (on his own), and that he was in his own way: that the band was better served if he just focused on singing/performing.
Wow...Christ playing a Strat.
Dude this is rare and awesome!
You were the greatest Chris.
RIP Chris. And thanks to the uploader of this video... I found out how cool is Jason Everman. Amazing dude!
In September 1994, influenced by Renaissance icon Benvenuto Cellini (who stated that a well-rounded man is an artist, warrior and philosopher), he left Mind Funk to join the United States Army, subsequently serving with the Army's 2nd Ranger Battalion and later with the Special Forces, serving tours in Afghanistan and Iraq.[4]
After completing his tour of duty with the Rangers, he took a break
from the service and lived in New York City where he briefly worked as a
bike messenger. He then traveled to Tibet
and worked and studied in a Buddhist monastery before returning to the
U.S. He reentered the Army when offered the chance to join Special
Forces. After receiving an honorable discharge in 2006, Everman went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Columbia University School of General Studies on May 20, 2013.[4] General Stanley A. McChrystal wrote a letter of recommendation for his application.[1] In September 2010, Everman conducted an interview with Music Life Radio detailing his life.[5] In July 2013, The New York Times published a portrait on Everman, written by guitarist and writer Clay Tarver.[1]
The article features interviews with Everman, his family members,
former band colleagues, music industry people, and soldiers. A 2014 The Daily Beast interview mentions that Everman was invited to and attended Nirvana's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
induction, that he lives in New York, has participated in writing
workshops and "still goes overseas regularly, working as a consultant
for the military."[6]
Omg, thank you so much for sharing this. Wow.
St Vitus.... one of SST's little treasures...
Damn, listen to how high he could really sing!!! Incredible. RIP Chris. I'm still sad over this.
This may all be true, but I far prefer his singing on the earlier records. Broader range, powerful, as imperfect as it may be technically
Thanks so much for keeping this part of the history of rock uploaded. I appreciate that sooo much!!!
I totally forgot that they had this second bass player before Ben and after the Asian dude.
Hiro Yamamoto is sexy too!:P
Jason Everman is the man, he was in nirvana and soundgarden.
He was the founder of soundgarden i mean yamamoto
@@Faks.09 now he served for us military
@@invisiblecurious856 not anymore
Even with shitty audio, Chris's voice soars above everything. SG ... best band every. Hell yeah!
