Thank you for the fly over. Brought back memories. I was stationed at Ord 1990s, until closing. My father went to basic training st Ord. See the barracks? Mine were nice like apartments. Ine been in thede basic military Army built barracks. What Ive always thought, is that they inspect, repair, fix up and section into Homeless habitats. A large number of homeless coukd have been housed.
Oh, one other thing worth mentioning……you can see Highway 1 in the background. I don’t know how to explain it but the sound of the cars running up/down that highway was like ever-present white noise that you always heard, especially at night and early in the dark morning. Not horns or engine noise as much as tire noise. I’ll never forget that and when I go back to visit, will be instantly familiar.
It breaks my heart to see Fort Ord in ruins. I did Basic and AIT at Fort Ord in 1970 and my brother did Basic there in 1963. Even in 1970 the wooden barracks were well kept as well as the landscaping. I visited the Fort five years ago and it is a mess with the trees overgrown, the grass dead and full of weeds, graffiti on and in the buildings, and the barrack trashed. Although I only spent 18 weeks of my life there it had a big impact on my life and what was going to come.😢
Thanks for this flyover, so much of Fort Ord has now been razed. I've been following the removal of many sections of Ord for over ten years. Many memories are gone along with the old barracks.
I was stationed there in 1981. This is, by far, the best flyover I have seen in 10 years... Very well done and thank you... For, my building is still there....
I was there from 1979 to 1981, I dont remember there being that many of those old barracks. When I first arrived I stayed in one for 2 nights I think? then onto B Btry 6/80 Field Artillery! Good memories at Fort Ord, Camp Roberts, and Fort Erwin. Had my first (legal) beer at age 17 at ft ord. sad to see some of these videos. I saw one of my barracks and they were run down, but now remodeled. I was glad to get out, but thinking back have good memories
Pretty cool. A lot has changed since I was last there in 1991! HOWEVER……I did recognize DISCOM hill (ran that enough times on our runs out to Seaside) and the post gym building is still there. Also my old company HQ building across from the gym still being used for something.
Fort Ord, the place that just had to be closed and eliminated from the map, it doesn't matter its history, tradition or whatever, the big boss said close it, and it was.
Great video, but heartbreaking. The lack of respect that is being shown for the legacy of the 7th Light Infantry Division is appalling. Are they even trying to preserve ANYTHING on the base?
Thank you for the fly over. I spent very little time in the wooden barracks in 1968 before starting BCT up to the east in the 3 story concrete barracks.
I thank you too for this little fly over, I couldn't recognize anything, except that I was housed in one of those yellow barracks; nearby was a block size motor pool. Memories and sadness that this land faced the ugly music. Please keep the conversation going, I like to know more.
I lived out the from 77 to 83, loved it . I was a army brat, pops was stationed there. Went to school 🏫 at Stillwell and Fitch. I would love to go there and ta kk e a tour
This flyover video does bring back so many memories of my days at the old Fort Ord. Does anyone knows what happened to the officers and enlisted housing - single family houses? Thank you for posting the video.
Some are still being used today and are slowly be replaced and upgraded. There is also a whole section of abandoned ones. If you have a location I can take photos and video for you.
Fort ORD demise was huge and tacky; I called it the one way port to death, because that's what it was sending soldiers and activating many more to go to war; some came back, but others didn't make, oh! Well it is what it is. Good bye fort ORD, till we meet again? NO!
Much of the old family housing still exists. It's owned now by independent property management companies. They do however have stipulations they need to rent to military first, then DOD personal, then civilians I think. I just drove by some of the old housing south of the PX and they are now just taking some down and putting up new housing. I think it'll still be used for military (those going to NPS and DLI and some DOD that remain at Ord)
The thing that comes to my mind is why the local government did nothing to convert the land into something useful and instead just let it seat there until it was probably too late to repair all the damage done by the bad elements. Any answers? Thanks!
In addition to what @01YDC said, the land also had to be cleared of old ordnance and spent lead. All the firing ranges along the ocean side took years. So there was that massive cleanup. The government kept pushing back that they were not responsible for the asbestos cleanup of the barracks. So there was that back and forth. Finally, EVERYONE wanted their piece of the real estate pie. That is the most prime real estate on the peninsula. That took a while. Not many barracks remain. Some have been repurposed for CSUMB (CA state university) A base closure can take decades. When I was stationed in Augsburg, Germany. The kasserns were given back to the Germans in 2000. Even after 10 years when I went back to visit, there was some new development and many old barracks still standing.
BCT. C-5-1. November 1959 in the WW II barracks. Thanks for the video!

AIT, in January, February, March, and April 1971, then to Vietnam! Made it back! 🙏🏻

Thanks i have more. I would like to do this over, there seems to be an issue with its smoothness.

Fort Ord, the land that made a lot of soldiers and also sent others to many conflicts. Gone, but will never be forgotten

There’s a whole two to three other sections of Ft. Ord that you missed ;)

I remember as a child in the 80s going to Stillwell Hall right on the ocean to skate. It was torn down years ago because of erosion.
Trained there from Jan. 68 till March 68, Advanced Infantry Training.
Where was the Snack Shop, just down the hill from the EM Club? Thank you!
i did BCT and AIT there , heartbreaking .

just think back in 1986 when I was there what is taking this video wold be a (UFO) lol 🤣😂
Everytime I see these barracks ( now abandoned and tacky) it's my conclusion that the destiny of this land was to be what it is now.

1:28 the military is a dirty work place, and fort Ord is the best illustration of contamination. Fort Ord, bye and good riddance.

It would’ve been better without that annoying ass music
