    Pro tip from someone who regularly built small boxes like these in his old workplace, but mainly as custom meters for specialty applications:
    When drilling holes into any kind of enclosure, put some masking/painters tape on top of it, mark on top of the tape and drill through the tape.
    That way you don't scratch up the finish with the metal shavings on your drill bit and/or leave permanent marks on the surface with your pen.
    And when you try to solder a bit of wire to a terminal or pin, put some solder both on the end of the wire and the target pin beforehand. That makes the job a lot easier! :)

    I agree, there aren't enough DIY pedal videos on UA-cam yet.
    I'm just getting started doing this on my channel.

    Hey there, nice video! One thing though : you don't have to remember where the dot is under the DIP8 socket, it has a curve that needs to match at one side, that you clearly missed, cause you soldered the socket upside down :) Yet again, thanx for great content!

    I bought my Proco Rat 2 for $40 a few weeks ago. But this is great content to learn. But it's amazing how cheap you can find guitar pedals.

    I've been doing some minor soldering and building, but nothing like this- thanks for filming the whole thing and being honest with the issues. I think I might be able to handle it.

      Definitely! These ready made PCBs make everything easier when starting out - You can always move on to vero builds later on. The Tayda RAT is a great place to start, but if you want something easier to begin the Tayda Guitar Power Boost is also great (gives you the option of building several different boost pedals by varying your components) and only runs about $6 USD.

    The 9v dc jack in the parts list is a 2 prong, and one of the caps on the list thats supposed to be a film box is linked to an electrolytic cap. Just couple things to note if anyone is tackling this project. Using the 2 prong dc jack is fine if you arent doing a battery, but if going that route, just use mono jacks for the input and out jacks. Hope this is helpful for someone

    I like the price of your kit and how you assemble it I've also looked online at a lot of kits and a lot of them will cost as much as a pedal cost so there's got to be a more cost-effective way to build them.

      you are forgetting the value of learning. the price in dollars may be the same, but the VALUE is way higher. learning new skills is always a good idea.

    I know this is ancient history in computing terms, but I looked at the schematic shown on the linked website for the kit. It shows pin 1 and pin 8 being connected on the opamp. The opamp is a TL071CP, and on that opamp, pin 8 is not used. However, on the original RAT schematic (using the LM308) pin 1 and 8 ARE connected. On the LM308 pin 8 is the "COMP2" connection and pin5 is not connected. On the TL071CP pin 5 is the "offset null 2" and pin 8 is the n/c. So I think the schematic is using the wrong pin number, but hopefully the PCB is actually connecting pins 1 and 5 via C3 because I can't see the PCB that well. (I only worked this out so I could breadboard the circuit and it was bugging me that an unused pin was being used)

    Thanks for the video! One small comment, the reason for the sockets is not only for changing the IC, some ICs are sensitive and they can be damaged by the soldering process

  • @rebatecheck
    @rebatecheck 2 роки тому +1

    I watched your whole video and read the 49 comments before mine. I think it took guts to record everything and leave in your mistakes, it will probably save some noobs from making some of the same ones. As far as it is a bit sloppy, that's more of a personality thing, as long as you're happy with it, that's cool. I love that you just attacked that bish and made it your own. And like you said, it's a homemade one and it's going to look the part :D The only thing I could add that hasn't been mentioned yet is that you didn't have to struggle so much with that LED, and even change the height of the foot switch. Just attach some wires and put it where ever you want.

    since this the first video of yours i watch it was very informative and very educational for me since i have never done anything like this before it’s not easy but not that hard either thank you very much for posting these kinds of DYI videos especially for a beginner like me now fortunately for me i have a good friend i’ve known for about 35 yrs that is a wiz at stuff like this that can help me he mods stuff all of the time even amps and i must say that rat pedal clone sounds pretty decent i’m looking forward to watching your other videos on the tube screamer and the over drive and i hope that was red paint on your left palm and not blood lol at the end of your video

    Late to the party but the original op amp was the lm308 (I think) which is obsolete. The direct replacement is the OP07 which is also obsolete. This seems to be one of the few pedals where the op amp does seem to affect the sound/tonal character of the pedal. It's hypothesized that the poor slew rate of those op amps may be what gives it it's character. The TL071 will probably sound noticeably different.
    Distortion pedals usually use little current and a 9 volt battery will last a long time if you prefer going that way.

      LM308 is still available. I swapped out 4148 diodes for red leds as someone suggested to me for better dirt, and maybe drill holes in the case for red eyes if they do light up. Might also do some of the “Mightier Mouse” mods (Beavisaudio).

    Why did you install the op-amp socket upside down ? IT also has the cut out as marked on the silkscreen on the board to indicate pin 1...

    • @inset09
      @inset09 3 роки тому +2

      Yeah, the guy was like "you need to make sure you write down where the dot is". Like the socket wasn't built in a way that avoid this problem. And the guy simply did this writing WHILE being worried about that.
      If anyone wants to change the op-amp in the future there is a GIGANTIC chance they'll put it wrong

    Do you have to have the stereo output jacks, or would mono jacks suffice? Only asking because the mono jacks are a fraction of the price and the stereo jacks are out of stock at Tayda :(

    • @sylek0
      @sylek0  3 роки тому

      Mono is fine!

    • @AaronAubreyPhoto
      @AaronAubreyPhoto 3 роки тому

      One stereo input jack is only needed if you want to use a 9V battery. Plugging a cable into it is what arms the battery. If you're going to run your pedal off of power, then mono is fine!!

  • @Abihef

    If i buy two jacks, Footswitch and box I'm already over 30 euros.
    How on earth can you get them so cheap.
    (Note tayda ain't an option where I live but still if not buying in bulk I can't get those prices anywhere)
    (Let alone with custom pcbs)

    • @sylek0
      @sylek0  5 місяців тому

      I haven't looked in a few years but Tayda was exceptionally cheap for me when I made this video. Digikey and Mouser sometimes had decent price options but Tayda was by far the most affordable

    I know Capacitors have a positive and negative side, is this so with the Resistors? I see the coloured bands around them, they mean something? Does it make a difference which way they are inserted into the board? Thanks by the way, i don't understand why this has only had 9448 views? I will be sharing the link, thanks again Baldur. I'm subscribing bro, when i get my channel up and running hope you'll pay me a visit. God bless.

      Resistors are not directional. The stripes on resistors indicate their resistance, it's too much to explain in a comment but google can teach you to read them.

    Have you tried other chips in it yet? I had a 308 originally and was loving the sound, but I accidentally bricked it when I put it in the enclosure (long story). I put in the same chip you have and I did not enjoy it as much. I'm going to try a 741 chip and see if its closer to what I want based on what I saw on the diy pedals channel vid showing how close it came: ua-cam.com/video/l0qVnxUJwsw/v-deo.html
    I'm hoping it isn't just my imagination that it sounded better hahaha. I do know though that a CA3130 sounded better to my ears as well (its what is in my pedal currently, from before my research I did today)
