A few months back I watched one of your older videos and decided to give building a RAT clone a shot. It took a while but I got it working after some encouragement from you, and I've been really grateful ever since. I'm now on my 10th+ build and have already sold a couple of custom painted cases. It's legitimately one of my proudest accomplishments. I've been making art for fun since I was a kid but have never actually sold my artwork to anyone, ever, and building guitar pedals has given me the medium to finally sell my art. I can't thank you enough, Jason.
Conversely, as somone who thought they really wanted to build pedals, I realised this is absolutely NOT my thing. Honestly though, really awesome to read that dude. Best of luck on your new boutique pedal company! People like me need people like you in the world lol
Just now seeing this comment :) happy to hear that dude! Ed works here now for anyone else seeing this and does the majority of the soldering and assembly for everyone’s Fuzzlord pedals 🙌
I spent the last 8 hours building my first pedal, an acapulco gold clone. Need to figure out why I suddenly get no sound now that I placed everything in the enclosure haha! I can definitely see the appeal now, it's almost a meditative experience soldering all the tiny resistors, capacitors etc and going from a handful of small parts to a functional pedal, very rewarding. Great video!
If it worked outside the box it is likely just a jack grounding against enclousre (: I do a monthly QA on Patreon if you ever want to ask some questions, thanks for watching!
It will easily end up taking as much time or most likely even more than building the pedals or playing them , at least in my experience. and I knew nothing about any of this prior. It is a blast though and sometimes I wonder if I've started to enjoy just building shit more than playing with it.
I really wanna get into this as a 31 year old who’s played guitar for 20 years and at a crossroads in life. Literally got a Walmart job yesterday, but part time, so this has been on my mind lately. Thank you for all these tips and videos, links to helpful sites.
I've built a few pedal from kit companies (BYOC, General Guitar Gadgets, cheap Amazon kit). One piece of advice that I'd give is to have a multimeter available to properly identify each resistor. As someone who has red/green colorblindness, I found it very difficult to discern the different color markings on the resistors. The brown and black, red and orange, and blue and purple can be difficult to tell the difference, but if you use your multimeter (helps to have the alligator clips), you can accurately measure their resistance.
Thanks for the tips on how to breaking the strip board more cleanly and also using a drill bit to break the paths. I always have trouble on cutting and breaking these boards.
Great video! I built some tagboard pedals and it's easier than you think. The Tagboard FX homepage is a great source if you are into DIY pedals. I prefer potentiometers that are soldered directly on the PCB or tagbourd as it makes everything nice and tidy inside the pedal. If you want some great sounding and very easy to build DIY pedals, God City Instruments do cool PCBs. I just guilt a Brutalist Jr and a Hannibal and they sound awesome!
Thank you! The Tagboard page is so great and a wonderful resource for DIY folks. I might have to check out one of those kits for myself! I am planning on offering a kit with a build video in the future as well! Cheers!
@@FuzzlordEffects That would be awesome, and please make sure these kits are also sold on Musikding in Germany! Because shipping to the EU is prettyx expansive. ;)
Informative and interesting video. Been kicking around the idea of pedal making myself. This is inspiring to say the least. Off subject Jason, just got a Rickenbacher 4003 ran it into your Fuzzlord Drone Master into Electro Harmonix Q-tron into My late '90s Trace Elliot. The swampy goo seeping out the cab was awesome. Keep up the great videos and stellar effects! Cheers bro!
This is a great video and the fuzz sounds killer. Great job. I’m new to this. Is there anywhere online I can find directions for installing a potentiometer switch and jacks. That’s where I’m having the most trouble. The board was fun to make. The other wiring is tripping me up.
This was fantastic! Thanks so much for doing this! If one wanted to replace the footswitch in a kit with a soft switch, what are some things to keep in mind when replacing that part? Great content! Cheers!
Is that like the JFET switching or boss type set up you'd see a lot? I can never remember what that's called? Id always wondered this about those switches some pedals have that you can operate like typical footswitch he's or hold them for momentary operation of certain things. I've not used one yet in any pedals but there's a bunch with that switch in them. Wasn't sure if that would entail extra circuitry that you'd not normally have to include, aside from what the momentary action is driven by, for example like making your delay go apesh*t while it's held down, into crazy oscillations.
G'day all you Fuzza's from Mad Max country in outback OZ. Cool vid and that sounds fuzzn awesome, i bread boarded a tame axis fuzz last night it's cool but now i want one of these. What transistors did you decide on?
Where do people get the tagboard? Google is failing me.. A list of websites for these parts would be wonderful. Or a list of the parts for this build and where to buy them. Thank you
20:30 Talking about ground loops... I find you don't need to connect one of the jacks to ground, the metal pedal enclosure itself will do this and avoid a loop, otherwise you WILL have a loop. Perhaps different if the pedal enclosure is painted and thus not conductive
Yes. You're messing with electricity, there's always a risk to mess something up bad enough to fry anything. Hooking your output up to a 120v rail would probably be bad, yeah?
Hi Jason, thanks so much for this. Do you advise that an absolute beginner do some kind of basic electronics/electrical course? I've always tended towards literature and so the sciences is a new interest.
Search beginner electronics on UA-cam and there's someone with a pretty good playlist, I forget the channel name but it'll be right there immediately. Has some good content for the basics

I would also like to know if you have a site I can buy from? Congrats man!

@@FuzzlordEffects Thank you for the tip! I feel like troubleshooting these is definitely part of the fun too.
I built the same clone as my second pedal a few days ago. The thing absolutely rips.
Lmao it will end up becoming its own damn applied science

Oh dude how I wish you put this video a month ago when I first started building pedals! Your videos have been a huge inspiration for me
cheers Jason hop eit is still helpful!
KILLER video Jason. People making things is awesome. People helping people make this is also awesome.
Thank you I really appreciate that!

it was news to me haha! Glad it helped (:
Oh, wow! 😲
Just what I needed! Thank you for posting this!! 🎸
Thanks for watching Jody!
I probably won't be building a pedal anytime soon, but I love how-to videos! This was super interesting
Glad it was fun to watch! I don’t build cars but watch UA-cam hot rod videos all the time 🖤
super informative and finally i have found someone using the same iBanez I have! Great video (& great guitar)

I'm saving all the resistors from my circuits lab for this very reason!
Check out the Johnny cash song one piece at a time haha. Did the same at school 😃
Awesome vid! It took me 3 tries but I finally got it! Thanks FUZZLORD!

Dang Rocky that is a badass setup!!!! 🙏
😂😂😂 poor Brett, so excited to get those pedals built and we sat there at my dining room all night, now look how far he's come in such a short time.
he's a trooper and a really motivated learner (:
@@FuzzlordEffects Yes indeed he is hahaha, awesome guy for sure.

Awesome stuff Jason!!!🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
cheers Chris!

If one wanted to replace the footswitch in a kit with a soft switch, what are some things to keep in mind when replacing that part?

The soft switching requires another mini sub circuit that would have to be added on. Maybe I’ll have to design an add on kit for this (:

@@FuzzlordEffects cool ill give those a crack maybe even BC550s I've got those lying around also
From 0 to Hella!
hell yeah!
Awesome looks like some work though if you don't get it exactly right wow great informative video😎💯🤘
Killer video Jason! ✌️🤩
Thanks Man!
Can I get a picture of the backside? I just connected everything but know I want to finish the soldering.
Cool build Jason my friend ✌👍

Yo ,is it possible to burn a amplifier when you will connect something wrong in effect?or something will be wrong with power supply like input of DC ?
Yes. You're messing with electricity, there's always a risk to mess something up bad enough to fry anything. Hooking your output up to a 120v rail would probably be bad, yeah?
Why do you do trace cuts for the cables? I am confused
I need to see the backside of the wired circuit board. Can I get a picture?
doing this build for myself... trying to figure out how the potentiometer is wired to the board. i can't find much of anything on the diagrams
All of the diagrams link show the pot wiring to board 👀
great vid! 🎉
Where can I purchase the tagboard?
Is there a better starting point for me?? I feel like I missed a day or two of class
I did another recently where I assembled a kit with pcb that was a lot more clear in the steps of assembly hope it helps!
I will using breadboad :) this very cheap tool and I Dont have big experience in building effect so this is beginner solutions :)

so i just about finished this exact build. i get bypass sound but when i activate it i get nothing coming out my amp. what do?
Look for your mistake 😬
@@FuzzlordEffects it seems so obvious now that it's in words 🤣🤣🤣
UPDATE:
SHE WORKS GUD!!
Hell yeah!!
I dont understand a single thing, i guess ill just have to buy a pedal
Hi Jason, thanks so much for this. Do you advise that an absolute beginner do some kind of basic electronics/electrical course? I've always tended towards literature and so the sciences is a new interest.
Having some basic soldering experience and even better, experience wiring guitars. The process is a lot of troubleshooting, so don't be discouraged
