So many things I wished I'd been around to see. Yes, a more innnocent way of life but the one thing that always stands out in front for me is the way people dressed. Such pride they had in themselves. Picture this. People walking off of a roller coaster ride with shirts and ties. Gracious.
It's incredible to think people dressed up to go to the park. I still remember dressing up in a suit and tie when I boarded an airplane to go see my grandparents for a week. Now look at how some people dress when they're on a plane.
This had to be the last season the park was open. There is a 1971 chevy chevelle in the parking lot. (The one with the large bumper gaurds, @0:58) But it's still a great clip. One of my favorite rides at night was, "The Wild Mouse" THANKS for POSTING!
I wish I was able to see this park, but unfortunately, it was long gone before I was born. I like how both the Skyrocket and Cyclone clips were incorporated. Nicely done. Its also interesting to see that people dressed up just to go to a amusement park, as opposed to today, where we dress causually.
Yes, that indeed is one of the Traver triplets. And Yes, the coaster survived the fire, but it was removed for the reasons you mentioned. Unlike Crystal Beach, Traver was 'forced' to work with land constraint at both the Palisades and Revere Beach. While Revere Beach already had a Prior & Church designed coaster by the name of Cyclone, Traver's coaster was named Lightning, which was the largest and fastest of his triplets. It also was very short lived.
Swamp actually cut in some Cyclone stuff at the end of the video to pad it out a bit. But Sky Rocket looks like an awesome ride! I remember as a kid having to put on an "outfit" to fly on a plane. I'm only 36 too!
This is great footage, although there is one thing I gotta say: Before this video was taken, Edison invented the first practical light bulb. Henry Ford introduced the Model-T Automobile, and Einstein developed The Theory of Relativity. Wasn't there anybody back then who thought of designing summer clothing?
The coaster that's now in the ocean at Seaside Heights was also called the "Wild Mouse",and it did the same sudden-turn thing, but it was over the ocean.
I went on it in the sixties and that was the cyclone roller coaster. The fire is the skyrocket and the ending when the people are exiting the ride that is the skyrocket but the film of the coaster going down the hills is definitely the cyclone. I rode it at least 20 time in my life.
I miss palisades amusement park😭😭😭😭 even tho I was not alive back then. And plus I live in cliffside park I could have gone there every single day. And now there is were the mayors office is the library is the police\fire station
The first part right up until you see the view of the tracks from the first car and the final footage of the 1928 sequence where the people are exiting the roller coaster does look authentic but I very much agree about the cars which look to me more like 1968 than 1928. It looks to me like two pieces of film approximately 40 years apart spliced together. The 1935 sequence looks to be authentic with dubbed in sound.
@singinjohnny - very observant. That's pretty much what I did. Most people do not read the description before they watch the clip, but I explained exactly what I did. I wanted to make it a full clip of the Skyrocket/Cyclone, so I spliced in scenes from the 60's to complete the circuit. Also, the sirens are fake. :):)
Whoa! Rare scene of the little-photographed Traver triplet at Palisades! It seems the Cyclone was unaffected by the fire? Was the tear down & replacement for the same reason as Crystal Beach & Revere Beach, high maintenance & low ridership?
I begged my dad for days to go on this Cyclone until he finally relented but then he refused to go on it with me. I was 8 or 9 (I think) so it was 1968 or 1969, and I was scared to death once the ride started. When it was over the only thing my Dad said was "You look a little green." I never told him how petrified I was that it would come off the rails or I'd get thrown out of the car or that I wanted to throw up as soon as we hit the first drop. I also had whiplash because it threw me around. Dad was smarter than I thought.
The Sky Rocket looks like it was one of those infamous Cyclone coaster from Harry Traver. Sad to see this park burn, but many parks at that time fell victim to the flame as well. Atleast this one won't be forgotten as a popular song was written about it called Palisdes Park. Unfortunately, I don't remember the original singer, but I do know the Beach Boys did a remake of it.
No, it's not. Mean Streak is much bigger, and has a completely different layout. They do look sort of similar, which is probably because most wooden coasters use a similar type of track.

I saw people dressed up in the 50s at Kennywood. Maybe not ties but women in dresses.

Great footage of the Skyrocket (albeit spliced with the later Cyclone). I agree that the footage showing the (Traver) Cyclone is truly AMAZING!!

Coney Island also has a roller coaster named the Cyclone which open to the public on June 26, 1927.
Damn you appartments for replacing that awesome amusement park. If that amusement park still existed then it would be a tourist trap.

@swampfoxer This really was very well done. Nice editing.
I love these. Can you imagine wearing a jacket and tie to an amusement park?

Freddie Boom Boom Cannon performed the original version of it.
Hey, wasn't that the same place as the song written by Chuck Barris of the Gong Show?
wow i live near there i had no idea there was an amusement park by me!
They start with the skyrocket then switch to the cyclone then show people coming out the exit of the skyrocket. Then the skyrocket burning down.

@444Guitarboy
they had a fire in 1944 and in 1935.
@rxpro19 - That is explained in my description
Another piece of Americana gone forever.
2:36 Abe Lincoln makes a cameo on right
I am pretty sure the fire was from 1944.
thats the mean streak at cedar point
not 1928...look @ cars
those were days that you dressed for the ocassion and people acted like humans fun times gone
