- Not the biggest, baddest of roller coasters, but an incredibly beautiful view from the top of Buck Mountain, 4700ft above sea level in Maggie Valley, NC. Coaster changed it's name to Cliffhanger but closed in 2002. The park has fallen on difficult times and is currently closed, awaiting a buyer.
I remember the staff would let us ride that roller coaster two or three times in a row, as long as everyone gave them a thumbs up. The good old days....
Oh yea! I rode it 9 times in a row right at closing time. The good ole days!
The last time I went there, my husband (now ex) and I were the only ones in line for the ride so they just kept sending us through over and over, it was great since we both loved roller coasters. What I loved about the coaster was the turns where you looked down and was looking down the mountain side.
@@tracey2156 Yes! It was very intense and one of a kind. Do you remember the black widow? That was awesome as well, the scrambler in the dark with strobe lights.
@@stephenrandall7431 Gawd yes, they left us on that ride too, I swear it was like for 10 mins. We were the only ones in it and it just kept going and going. That was my second trip to Ghost town, first time I went , was with my parents when I was in high school. I don't remember the rides being there when we went. That would have been around 1987 I think. I may be completely wrong and just didn't pay attention to the rides that time but that would have been odd since I love roller coasters.
@@stephenrandall7431 ok I was wrong, I just looked it up and the coaster was installed in 1986 so either my memory of the date we went was wrong or I didn't pay attention to it being there.
My parents took me there in the mid 70's and it was great. I will never forget the swings going over the mountain. Went back there in 2013 and I was so disappointed. Wish they would be able to reopen.
Went there with the family in the mid 90s. Still find it hard to believe no one has bought it and brought it back to its glory. When I win the lottery it will happen...
This was my first looping coaster. This video brought back some good memories.
Also my first real coaster!
Mine too! My dad took me around 1995
@@willbean1573Same! 🎉
The Proper People sent me here.
I miss those days up there. Went as a kid and went as a adult. Damn shame it's gone
I was there in 1991 and rode this coaster. Now i live right next door to it. A shame that its closed.
Hahaha, you were “that guy” with the video camera in the theme park. God bless you.
My dad used to take me every summer 92-96. Red devil was my favorite. Video brought back a lot of fond memories. As like many it was the first 360 loop ride I ever rode. Always wanted to take my daughter there. The park was a lot of fun. The native American shows where they would dance, the old timey jail, and swings (where your feet flew over the side of the mountain) were so much fun as a kid! Kinda sad its not "there" anymore😞
Wow! 93 was the first and only time being there. Never rode the coaster but that chair lift spooked the hell out of me back then. Steepest one ive ever been on.
It should scare you it was dangerous and had a reputation for break down
I miss that place it was so fun to there with my family
We use to take our kids there when they was little. They loved it. We went in July of 93. So sad it had to close, was a very fun place.
Momma, we have a lot of great memories from there. Love you very much!!🎢👻
Thanks for bringing back these great memories I went with my family and stick by my grandmamas side like glue I was her favorite and she was my favorite person in the 🌎but now she's gone and 1993 was the year we went also thanks for the video😘
I meant stuck not stick lol
I'm sorry !!! My folks are all gone now too. We had a lot of great times at ghost town sadly it's gone now too.
We went on that coaster in the mid 90's. I'll tell you what, half the battle on that rickety thing was staying in your seat. Some of the restraints weren't the best. We rode it several times, the park wasn't crowded at all. Better location would have helped them survive, maybe, but that was part of the charm. The drive to this park from the tourist magnets Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge is close to 2 hours. But, Maggie Valley has some great views, and some of the best were from the top of that amusement park.
Rode this in 2000 or 2001 loop was semi intense getting to the pArk was the fun part. I was 13 sad to see the whole park SBNO 😢
I remember going there as a kid in the late 80s or early 90s can't remember but I do remember riding the Red Devil and I remember the shows in the saloons and the chair lift and the swings its cool to see the videos Thanks for sharing brings back a lot of memories
Great video i was 10 years old that year visited the park many years growing up sad to hear it closed
Thanks for the memories, I'm 56, and parents took me and sis there several times as children, took my kids there about 5 times when they were kids and teenagers. Would love to take my 2 grand kids there but unfortunately the town wont help them get back on there feet so they can reopen.
Thanks for uploading this. I went to this park a few times in the mid-90's over summer vacations. This coaster did not have any over-the-shoulder restraints; the cars only had a lap bar to hold passengers in haha. Super sketch considering there was a loop, but that just made it more exciting.
May I use this footage in a video I am making about coasters in crazy locations? I will give you full credit during the video.
Theme Park Crazy, sure that will be fine.
Theme Park Crazy It is a shame cedar fair would not acquire this property they could seriously compete or destroy dollywood!
This guy is the reason I'm here lol
I think you would love my most recent video of this park since it's been abandoned!!
@@markmiller4503 They'd probably buy Dollywood, for what that's worth, and that's not gonna happen anytime soon. Dollywood is fine enough, as is.
Awesome footage!
I made some lifelong memories at that park.
Great memories right there!!
My mom said that vertical loop was a neckbreaker. However this was like Hopkins first steel roller coaster, and it was probably one of the first vertical loops ever created. So ya can't go wrong with this great piece of history.❤
Sad that this is over now. Miss this place , just wished someone with mega bucks would buy it and reopen
Working on a documentary on Ghost Town In The Sky. Would love for your footage to feature in the documentary. Let me know if this is possible.
Went here as a kid !
I stay in Maggie valley for vacation every summer
First Coaster I have a rode in July of 93. Also I can't remember what the name of the gravity ride was that hung out off the side of the mountain that was pretty fun too
Might buy this park when ever I'm 37
I loved riding red devil
From personal experience that chairlift is way scarier than the Red Devil Roller Coaster.
Lmao you got stuck too huh?
Hi!! I am planning on making a parody of this coaster and wanted to know if I can use the footage?? Thanks
I wanna see a Jersey Devil roller coaster!
Looks like a fun ride, though I know Hopkins are supposed to be pretty badly manufactured. How rough was this one?
RD was pretty smooth actually. My only complaint was it was too short.
I used to go there every summer when I was a kid, and it was pretty rough when I rode it. One time during the loop it threw me forward, and I think it pulled something in my back because afterwards I couldn't hardly straighten up, and it remained sore for a few days. It was a fun ride though.
That loop will almost break your neck!
Back in the mid 90s it was a pretty jerky ride and I was 14 at the time. Honestly it was the location that was the thrill! A rail coaster on the side of a mountain!! Absolutely killer views and the Pirate Ship would show you the entire view off of Buck Mountain!! This place was like a well hidden secret from Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.
Life before GoPro and DJI
Please reopen this place!!
Did this coaster only have a lap bar
apparently
haha yes, only a lap bar - that made it all the more exciting.
are they open this year
Tammy Holbrook. no
Tammy Holbrook the park is completely abandoned. like thats what brought me to this video
@@kaythreefox6005 yeah I went there and it was extremely creepy
Idk this ride should have gone all the way down the mountain then use booster wheels to push it back up
Never knew this coaster starts with a drop into a vertical loop and ends with a chain lift.
Yep, works in reverse from what is accepted as standard with most coasters starting with the lift hill first. I have another one for you...Kennywood Park, Pittsburgh, PA, The Thunderbolt. Now this coaster has a lift hill in the middle of the ride and it is a reverse concept coaster in which each subsequent dip gets larger with the biggest one being at the end of the ride. Usually it is the other way around. The Thunderbolt does this because half of the ride is built into a ravine.
This coaster looked suspect AF
Its better than the wild mouse at Beach Bend Park at Boling green ky.
drops are to small
George Lang I wonder how much land it comes with it would be a great investment for cedar fair! They would turn it into something world class!
Aujourd'hui c'est un urbex abandonné
@carpetbagger
Americans are so spoiled small parks cant compete with the enormous rides at the big parks. Plus the parks make sire to keep insurance rates high so new parks cant open. New buisnesses should get free insurance for 5 years to establish and it should be payed for by the large parks that are engaging in monopolistic buisnesses practices.
