I am very sad to say I have a pretty low gpa around 6.7 due to the nonsense grading system in my institute. I was pulled down many times because of this. I always had a passion to do research and teach students in IITs . I have completed my master's with a high GPA of 9.1 and currently finishing a PhD from an IIT with many impactful publications. Still I'm not sure whether I will get a faculty position in premier institute due to my low UG GPA. This is actually depressing me sometimes.
Thank you for the video Sir... Please make a video for journals... How and where to look for journals... Should a high factor journal be a priority for PhD students or a well known reputed (peer reviewed) journal in a special narrow area which might not have a very high factor ranking

Thanks a lot for this video, sir. These are the kinds of confidence videos I so often need. There's always a constant train of thought running in my mind about "I couldn't even score good in my undergraduate courses, how can I ever become an astronomer", even after constant reconciliations by my friends. (I just recently graduated with a 7.23 CGPA in B. Tech. Engineering Physics, by the way) But on the other hand, I am also kind of angry, or maybe I dont agree with them would be better to say, at my classmates who have a higher CGPA than me, but still chose to go for programming or data analytics jobs, but then I also think "Its their life, I have no right to tell them what to do.". And, by the way, I do agree with your point of high-achievers can feel burnt out faster, because, as I stated above, most of my classmates who had a higher CGPA than me, not all but some of them were within my "acquaintance-circle" (I mean we weren't good friends but just we knew each other on a greeting-when-met basis), so I had a chance to ask them with such nice grades why don't you go for research instead of placements? And most of them had the same answer- "I am done with studying, enough. Research isn't my cup of tea.". I kinda makes me sad to think with such nice grades and such a nice thinking capabilities, what all could they have done, but then again, its their life.
I have very good GPA in my Bsc but I don't know what I have studied. On the other hand I have average marks in MSc but I know what I learned and what I want to do.
Hi Sir.. I have been regularly following your channel and found your insights really helpful. I have 69% in my masters (which people consider average these days it seems) and want to pursue research in US. but Ive heard from many that 69% might not be enough. I felt demotivated and took a day-job, also partly because of financial constraints.. but now I really intend to pursue research as I have left that job as Ive realized its really not my cup of tea. Is it okay to look for Phd positions in the US, especially for someone who is in their 30s..? (I think you give us the most genuine answers that help in informed decision-making. please reply)
Yes it is certainly possible. Your chances increase if you contact some professor and can get him or her interested in your background and research. To alleviate the issue of marks you should apply to More normal universities which are not on the east and west coast of usa. Also if you have a good gre score that would boost your chances. Finally don’t rule out Europe as it has some government funded scholarships. low graders tend to be generalist minded and cannot focus on one special subject. research almost always tends to be multi-dimensional in nature. some understanding of neuroscience has only helped shape algorithms for machine learning in computer science.
Yes that is true. High graders may be good for tough theoretical problems. Lot is experimental research does not need that level of math knowledge though.
Yes Gpa should not be too low but toppers are not necessarily better. So B students are good but C students may have weak fundamentals. A students may be risk averse
@@Drganguli oh I understand this now. Especially the part about A student may be risk adverse (ua-cam.com/video/HLiasZwWTjA/v-deo.htmlsi=GZ6QKMU6Ybofh2Vr). I see that when doing research sometimes you have contradicting opinion with your supervisor because you work directly with the problem. but this seems to be a repeating pattern in history of science. A straight A student might be risk adverse in this case.....
Basically the argument is that there are many factors that goes into the making of a good researcher, knowledge is just one of them and certainly not the most important one, as that can be acquired over a period of time. CGPA doesn't measure the perseverance and persistence of a student, nor the motivation or other skillset that is required for being a good researcher but isn't part of the curriculum.

Sir, according to you, which is the most important document while applying for a PhD position in Europe or it totally depends upon the university guidelines?
In most cases it is the transcript, CV and the degree. Next is the reference letter and the sop or proposal. Of course each admission committtee has it’s own way of looking at a CV.
Yes it is good but the grades in core subject where you are planning to do research may matter more. Glad to see someone from academia who appreciates a lower GPA. Thank you!
Yes there are many paths which take you towards a goal and many research problems requiring different skill sets
Love from students of your Alma Matter
Thank you so much

It is possible to rectify this by getting higher grades in masters degree.

@Drganguli Optionality and Tinkering beats Intelligence.
Academia means
Higher education or university and college education and research
But if this is the case then why does low GPA student have difficulty apply to Phd program ? Maybe GPA is just a signal
