My favorite scene in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood was Brad Pitt (Cliff) speeding home through Los Angeles, going to his trailer and making macaroni & cheese/feeding his dog. That entire sequence was so simple but so cinematic. I loved this movie.
Exactly, it’s complete misdirection and perhaps the more frustrated critics are those unfamiliar with the tragic event. I honestly did no like the revisionist history because of personal reasons, but I was completely fine with the Tate stuff. I thought the Spahn Ranch sequence was a major lull and could have been trimmed. That was the only section which felt unnecessary (to a certain degree).
effective at what? sharon tate didnt need to be in the movie. the climax switch wasn't.... "OH MAN!! THAT WAS CRAZY I CAN'T BELIEVE I DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING!!!" it was.... "Oh. Lol. Wait... thats it?" Sharon asked em up for drinks to end the movie? The end sucked for how awesome it was. Sharon didn't need to die in the film, but the ending sucked for how awesome it was. Would've rather Cliff discover the plot or something and save sharon by killing all of them.
I watched it 5 times by now, it went from not even in my top 60 favorite movies to my 4th favorite movie of all time, each time I watch it it's better and better
People who love the movie, understand the nostalgia of the late 1960's, know the background of the Charles Manson story connection to Sharon Tate, know the significance of Spahn Ranch and the home that Sharon Tate was living in at that time. The people who don't know this history are ripping the movie.
I LOVED this movie, but it made me sad in a way... I don't think we'll ever see that age where there are big premieres and Hollywood is a big deal again. I just feel like this new age of streaming has contributed to cinema's demise. Then again, I love having the ability to watch movies from my home. Mixed feelings about the whole thing idk

YES! Finally. You're the first and only person to make the musical connection with American Graffiti. I noticed it while watching it. And I've watched SO many reviews of this movie and NOBODY has made that connection. Honestly the soundtrack through the radio, with all the commercials and jingles, is one of my favorite aspects of this movie. It sets the tone and vibes so well. Loved it. I wanna see it again.
I saw the movie and you just need to sit back and enjoy the moments. Yes the ending is to not everyone’s taste but it’s QTs payback for the Tate murders.

I relly think that in this day and age of fast forward nd in the moment everybody is kind of forgetting that stories were somthing that you wanted to cotinue nd listen or watch it with all the time in the world on your hand . Now its like get in get to the point nd tell your buddies that you were happily enjoyed it. This is one of classic movies that demands your attention.
I feel like it’s a movie most people will need to rewatch. I was truly immersed so I probably missed a few minute details. But honestly I understood all the references, messages and symbolism

I felt the same way. Although since I am a huge Tarantino fan and even huger fan of 60s pop culture--I really enjoyed the ride. But a lot of those nuances were initially missed...I can't wait to see it again.

I have been watching it over and over again and I love it for most of the reasons you have mentioned after your second viewing. I think Cliff lives in a trailer beside the drive in, I may be wrong. I also love the Sharon Tate stuff and feel that people who complain about that or/and the final 20 minutes have very limited knowledge of what actually happened that night and its impact.
Talking about the Bruce Lee fight scene with Cliff. This scene is Cliff's memory/flashback of why he was booted from the movie. Now, when all of us have flashbacks of our mistakes, The version in YOUR head always is a little different from what REALLY happened. So, Cliff's remembrance of that incident as he remembers it was that Lee was "cocky and ignorant" which in in Cliff's mind was justification to start a fight with Lee. It was very possible that Lee was NOT arrogant or cocky at all and that Cliff wasn't as good as Lee in the fight as depicted in the flashback. Our memories of things that happened to us can be very different that what actually happened. Tarantino was showing us Cliff's version.
Okay, I saw the movie last week and since that time have watched about 15 reviews on UA-cam and yours is by far the most intelligent and dead on. I feel exactly like you do, it's like I wrote what you're saying but probably not as well as you said it LOL. I have not however seen it a second time yet but plan to. Like you, after viewing it I thought no way would I ever sit through this again but after a few days I started to have this gnawing feeling which turned into a desire to see it again. as you said, it was expectations that made it a confused jumble to me. I am not necessarily A Tarantino fan to be honest, I love his passion for movies and also I am just a few years older than him and really appreciate the culture of that time and was very into it, In fact I kept a Manson scrapbook from the day of the murders till after the trial. I will say, partial spoiler alert here!, that I guessed where the end of the movie was headed weeks before I saw it and without knowing anything about it. But to me it seemed like a no-brainer that Tarantino's vision was going to involve a rescue fantasy of some kind, because that's what I would have done, as someone who was really affected by the murders. Anyway, blah blah blah, great review!
I'm old and remember most of the details of that era, I was a teenager at the time. The movie resonated with me all the way through. And I would be surprised if anyone over 60 had any issue with the film. Unless they're sanctimonious and cannot suspend belief... which means ya prolly ought to stay home and stay old! Great Movie! This video is a good 2nd viewing review and no spoilers. I've seen this movie once (35mm) and I think I might go see it again in the theater. A lot of your review makes me reminisce about 'Jackie Brown'. I stopped during your video to watch a JB trailer, very similar to what you talk about in this video. When I left the theater the first time I saw Jackie Brown I wasn't sure I was happy with the movie. I've probably watched it a dozen times since then. I know this is long but I have to tell you about the first time I showed ' Reservoir Dogs' to a bunch of my friends during a road trip. At the end they were all asking me why I brought it but the next day they couldn't stop talking about it. We watched it again that night.

100% agree with everything you have articulated. I think just the expectation of a new Tarantino movie has you so excited, you put the bar too high - that's what I did. I was almost outraged the first time - thought about it - saw it again, and although it's not my favorite Tarantino film, I definitely liked it more the second time. For sure, the Rick Dalton pilot was a little too long, but with it came the incredible performance from Julia Butters. The ending, I am still conflicted about because I think Tarantino already did something very similar to that, but I had a sense it wouldn't be a normal ending - that I still have to sit with and debate if I hate it, love it, or just am indifferent to it. Overall, it's not nearly as bad as I thought initially. My original gripe was Tarantino was too fixated on having everything look just right for it to be 1969, that he neglected the "fun" from the film, but maybe looking back, you can appreciate how much he cares. Sometimes some of his movies grow on me and I love them, despite not loving them the first time ("Jackie Brown") and sometimes the opposite effect occurs, where I loved it the first time, but have fallen out of love ("Django Unchained"). I will know for sure in a year if this is one of my favorite films of his or not - but you have to give it time to settle and give it another chance if you disliked the first time.
That's what happened with me in the 1st 3 Tarantino flicks I watched including Pulp Fiction - took me time to sink in- and since Kill Bill - I got used to his style and liked em instantly for what they are :-)

You need to know about that era, about films and Hollywood and about the Manson family to enjoy the movie. Without that is an epic wtf even for the Tarantino die hard fans
Cause you know what to expect, brotha! First time going in a Tarantino film, we're going to have presumptions about what to expect. OUATIH put the kibosh on whatever expectation I had going in. I think this is one of those films where you have to accept it on its own terms to fully enjoy/appreciate the flick. Of course, the ladies have had a very different opinion.
It's a different lens (a 35mm prime) and it's in 16:9 instead of 2:1. I felt like it would look weird if you couldn't see the gesticulations, so I went for the traditional format. I also opted for the prime to use less light and make it feel more chill. When shooting alone, it's a lot more difficult, so creating a relaxed environment helped to move through this more quickly than it otherwise would have been.
To understand Tarantino movies, you have to watch one before you get to the next one. To fully understand Tarantino, you really need to watch them all before the newest one.
You are absolutely correct here. I *liked* it the first time, but was slightly let down and maybe a bit baffled. Thought about it more, liked it the more I thought about it, then saw it again and now I really love it
It was much better on rewatch for be too. The expectations I had frustrated me too, I was super empty after I left. I still don't like it better than like Jackie Brown, IB, Pulp Fiction but it's really good on second watch.
Same, I took a friend and I was nervous that she wasn’t enjoying herself because it dragged a lot in the beginning, and it made me not enjoy the movie as much. Had I watched it on my own I would have loved it cause I trust Tarantino’s work.

thats what happened to "dear comrade" people complained its too slow.... i liked it... and this movie hasnt been released in india yet... even though it releases on aug 15, they wd have deleted scenes or beeped the dialogues fml
To me at least, I thought the plot (through the trailers and from what I heard) was gonna be about the murder of Sharon Tate, and how the two original characters find themselves roped into a whodunnit mystery where we already know who did it.
@@gojohngo106 You know, some films do that to you. Back in the 70s I saw JAWS, Exorcist, and a couple more many times. This is the first film I've felt like that about in a long time. It's like getting strapped in on a rollercoaster. Even if you've been on the ride before it just doesn't get old. Fantastic dialog that you keep laughing about, stunning shots like the crane shot rising up over the drive in, the kid saying "That's OK I throw myself on the floor all the time " ....on and on. And an ending that is just plain uplifting while being sad at the same time. And the credit sequence ....LOL

Very few tempt me to get out of the house, but this was just the perfect storm for me, I grew up in the Sixties..."Good Thing" by Paul Revere and Raiders was always a favorite that my band even played, and the cast was irresistible. It felt so good to leave the theater thrilled and beyond satisfied!
I "let the movie happen to me" the one time I watched it and enjoyed it. However while watching, both the couple to my left and the couple to my right left about half way through. I guess they were bored. I did think there would be more Manson in it, though.
My first viewing i was disappointed. It doesn’t have a plot. Nothing that happens is needed to get to the end, apart from two jokes. I really feel I need to see this again. Btw he doesn’t go to a drive in movie, he lives behind one.

It's Tarantino's funniest film. It's a very sweet buddy film. I think it's his best film after Pulp Fiction

My exact same feelings for pulp fiction. I thought pulp fiction was shit in my first watch and I left it midway only. Second time I loved it.

I watched it three times now, and my experience was very similar to yours. It was even better the third time around.

100% agree with everything you have articulated. I think just the expectation of a new Tarantino movie has you so excited, you put the bar too high - that's what I did. I was almost outraged the first time - thought about it - saw it again, and although it's not my favorite Tarantino film, I definitely liked it more the second time. For sure, the Rick Dalton pilot was a little too long, but with it came the incredible performance from Julia Butters. The ending, I am still conflicted about because I think Tarantino already did something very similar to that, but I had a sense it wouldn't be a normal ending - that I still have to sit with and debate if I hate it, love it, or just am indifferent to it.
Overall, it's not nearly as bad as I thought initially. My original gripe was Tarantino was too fixated on having everything look just right for it to be 1969, that he neglected the "fun" from the film, but maybe looking back, you can appreciate how much he cares.
Sometimes some of his movies grow on me and I love them, despite not loving them the first time ("Jackie Brown") and sometimes the opposite effect occurs, where I loved it the first time, but have fallen out of love ("Django Unchained").
I will know for sure in a year if this is one of my favorite films of his or not - but you have to give it time to settle and give it another chance if you disliked the first time.
Last line Brad says he also says earlier in the film....I had to see it more than once to pick that up!

That's what happened with me in the 1st 3 Tarantino flicks I watched including Pulp Fiction - took me time to sink in- and since Kill Bill - I got used to his style and liked em instantly for what they are :-)

You need to know about that era, about films and Hollywood and about the Manson family to enjoy the movie. Without that is an epic wtf even for the Tarantino die hard fans
Cause you know what to expect, brotha! First time going in a Tarantino film, we're going to have presumptions about what to expect. OUATIH put the kibosh on whatever expectation I had going in. I think this is one of those films where you have to accept it on its own terms to fully enjoy/appreciate the flick. Of course, the ladies have had a very different opinion.
Video looks different..are u using any new camera or lens?
It's a different lens (a 35mm prime) and it's in 16:9 instead of 2:1. I felt like it would look weird if you couldn't see the gesticulations, so I went for the traditional format. I also opted for the prime to use less light and make it feel more chill. When shooting alone, it's a lot more difficult, so creating a relaxed environment helped to move through this more quickly than it otherwise would have been.

To understand Tarantino movies, you have to watch one before you get to the next one. To fully understand Tarantino, you really need to watch them all before the newest one.

It was much better on rewatch for be too. The expectations I had frustrated me too, I was super empty after I left. I still don't like it better than like Jackie Brown, IB, Pulp Fiction but it's really good on second watch.

Same, I took a friend and I was nervous that she wasn’t enjoying herself because it dragged a lot in the beginning, and it made me not enjoy the movie as much. Had I watched it on my own I would have loved it cause I trust Tarantino’s work.

I had the EXACT SAME 1st time viewing.. I GET it now.. will see 2nd time.. I was pissed after the 1st time. But have been obsessed with the movie since haha

Funny, hadd same reaction after watching first time. Mixed feelings. Of course ending was great. Otherwise, wasn't so sure. After second viewing did a 180. Love this movie. True, I relaxed, let it roll, and let it be. Have seen three times, and will be going again. I never do that. Most times, only see a movie once. So much in this movie. Funny, emotional and original. I love this movie! Brad and Leo were perfect.
It’s hard to believe, but that was my reaction to seeing Pulp Fiction at the theatre back in ‘94. I liked it, but I had some mixed feelings. Then I saw it a number of times over the years and it’s my favorite Tarantino movie.

You won't like the movie until you know about the mansion family.
To me at least, I thought the plot (through the trailers and from what I heard) was gonna be about the murder of Sharon Tate, and how the two original characters find themselves roped into a whodunnit mystery where we already know who did it.

@@gojohngo106 You know, some films do that to you. Back in the 70s I saw JAWS, Exorcist, and a couple more many times. This is the first film I've felt like that about in a long time. It's like getting strapped in on a rollercoaster. Even if you've been on the ride before it just doesn't get old. Fantastic dialog that you keep laughing about, stunning shots like the crane shot rising up over the drive in, the kid saying "That's OK I throw myself on the floor all the time " ....on and on. And an ending that is just plain uplifting while being sad at the same time. And the credit sequence ....LOL
@@TheAerovons I agree with you. I gave up going to the theatre a couple years ago. Too much crap, was tired of wasting money. This movie is very rewarding to watch. I didn't mind the expense at all.
@@gojohngo106 Agreed, I almost always wait for them to hit online where I can rent and watch on an iPad at night under headphones. Very few tempt me to get out of the house, but this was just the perfect storm for me, I grew up in the Sixties..."Good Thing" by Paul Revere and Raiders was always a favorite that my band even played, and the cast was irresistible. It felt so good to leave the theater thrilled and beyond satisfied!

I "let the movie happen to me" the one time I watched it and enjoyed it. However while watching, both the couple to my left and the couple to my right left about half way through. I guess they were bored.
I did think there would be more Manson in it, though.
My first viewing i was disappointed. It doesn’t have a plot. Nothing that happens is needed to get to the end, apart from two jokes.
I really feel I need to see this again.

JABY do you think that Brad Pitt killed his wife? It was hinted that he might did and there was no hint that he didn't. So, if he did that, I think it's so wrong to make him the lead. That scene, was there to explain why he did it and it was the stupidest excuse.
