It's not the equipment that matters, it's the will and passion to create amazing videos. Thanks for sharing all of the wonderful tips on getting started on UA-cam.
I wasted 3 years waiting for the right equipment, I finally started this year with the webcam and learning as I go before I upgrade my tech. I wish I would have JUST gotten started sooner
100% !! I’m STILL using my iPhone as my camera for my videos! It works great and my videos are 1080p. It definitely doesn’t take 1 BILLION dollars, but time definitely helps!
Editing is definitely my biggest hurdle in uploading. I used filmora for a few videos, just to edit and never exported. When I finally felt I had something good enough to post, it slapped a huge banner across the entire video unless I paid for an upgrade, which I couldn't do. I will never suggest Filmora to anyone unless they are already willing to pay, or already have a paid account. Davinci Resolve is the way to go!!! Great vid, as always!
This video is spot on! So many people delay getting started because they think they need to have all this fancy, expensive equipment when really its best to start with what you have. Not only is it going to be easier on your pockets but it will give you a chance to get your feet wet with UA-cam so you can decide if you really want to make a go at it. I think it is important to invest in your channel as you go and also so that you can gradually learn because some of that fancy equipment requires a learning curve. I really appreciated how you show the comparison between phone and camera audio and quality!
Jess! I heart you and you make me smile so much! So I started my channel, uploaded my first video on August 23rd of this year, 2020. I have been relatively successful, in my tiny humble opinion, but my ideas are getting strewed all over the place. I’m like you with my farmy channel but I am being pulled to the you tube help realm and do plan to start my second channel ASAP. I’m finding my farmy content to be pretty difficult to plan and film and want to plan and films you know how it is. Things aren’t often super planned on the farm! Lol and I just find it hard to get the motivation to make something. I am so excited for my second channel because I honestly think the content will be “easier” to come up with, filmed mostly inside, and really dependent on the viewers. I dunno. I feel torn. I know I can do both, but I feel like the farmy channel will fall wayside even tho I really don’t want it to. Time management is something I am SUPER struggling with! I ask all the questions and I get great answers but I find it so hard to implement. I don’t know if it will ever come to me! I’ve recently been diagnosed ADHD - Inattentive and things make a ton of sense. Haha I’m not exactly sure where I am going with this but I just had a feeling you could relate.
I was just thinking about all of the video recorders my family has owned over the years last night and how it's so weird but awesome how all of that has changed.
Use the tools you have at your disposal and make the best content possible. This is the best advice for almost any business...start with what you got! Then iterate and improve as you go.
Hey Jessica! Thank you for the great video. I have a question, should I first set up a downloadable or a digital product before I start creating content? Also could you share some tips on what to write on the description box. Thanks so much!
I was trying to figure out the overhead filming. I started my channel years ago and have to agree that I allowed the small things stop me from doing something I've wanted to do for years. So 2021 is my year. Thank you for the helpful tips
I started with iPad and natural lighting, got a lav mic 2 months in but the audio still needs to improve apparently. I bought an usb mic but I need a connection cable to my iPad. And I am looking into a stand rather than propping it up on a box. I think I am going to use a desk lamp for now to help with lighting.
Here's a must-do audio hack if you record the audio with your cell phone's built in mic. Whether because that is all you own, or whether you just needed to record on the fly and didn't have your mic available: Make the audio mono in editing. There should be a menu setting or you can right click on the track and select to make the track mono. Stereo is great if you are recording a passing freight train. It is not great if you are sometimes off-center to the camera (especially if you are holding the phone while you walk), there are birds chirping to your left, somebody makes noise to the right, the room has a little bit of an echo (which will seem worse in stereo) and similar. Mono centers your voice. And, keeps those "left ear and right ear" distractions now gone, buried under your voice. Don't get me wrong: By all means do any music or on-purpose sound affects in stereo. However, spoken word audio is inherently mono in the first place. Force that to happen with your cell phone audio.
Love that you are so real ,such a great personality, too cute and no long introduction, thanks goodness. I have no fancy equipment, I plan on using my phone. I just have no idea about tagging, collaborating etc...
Everytime I’ve tried to film on my phone and transfer that to my Mac, the video and audio don’t sink up. I tried to fix it by downloading a program and changing it from variable to constant but that didn’t work either. I wish more people talked about how to sync videos. I’m not seeing a sync button on iMovie 🤷🏼♀️
I think the biggest misconception about UA-cam channels these days is the cost. You don't need $1000 cameras, lighting that costs hundreds, or even a super powerful computer. You can literally start with the smartphone you have in your pocket and a positive mindset. The BIGGEST obstacle, IMO, is fear. You just need to press record!
I just started an art channel last week and watching your videos have been really helpful in starting, I even mentioned you in my first video! The thing I'm kind of struggling with is what to say in intros. I know there should be a hook but if you have any tips on making a hook I'd love to know 🙂
Thank you for all the great info! I’m just getting started-most of my videos will be cooking where I will be moving from counter to stove to fridge to counter- also different angles in these areas- with lighting and sound in mind what suggestions/ equipment do you have for moving around quickly and easily-using my phone??? I’d truly appreciate your input!🤗
Thanks for this video Jessica! I really want to use UA-cam to connect video to blog posts and my podcast. I use OpenShot Video Editor on my laptop when I edit videos. It's free! My biggest questions are how to maximize my time so that I can be successfully consistent and could my video come out the same day as the connected blog post and podcast?
So i wanted to know if i wanted to start my videos on my home renovation but in between i wanna show the before pictures and things i did on my journey so my question is do i post every time or put it on when your finished
"Take the next step as you can." Love this. ❤ If you use Windows, would highly recommend Hitfilm Express. They have a free option, even though they really try to get you to get the paid. Don't feel like you have to get the paid version starting out, but you give them monies as you go. They have add-on paid packages for additional features, but I've been using the free one for 4 months (after trying several other Windows-friendly video editing applications) and haven't had any issues. Good luck, everyone!
I know she'll answer but what I did was put a picture of my kid on my phone/laptop with a little circle cut out for the camera. That way I had a face to talk to and made sure I was looking at audience!
Oh girl, yes! Cheryll's suggestion is GREAT...also, just getting in the mindset that someone is watching on the other end - even though they're not watching live, I think will help too! A picture of someone is a GREAT tip and one I've definitely recommended before.
Jessica thank you so much for filming and sharing this extremely helpful and informative video!! I love using external lights and ceiling lights in addition to the natural lighting that I use. I've been using natural lighting with a ring light and it has been the perfect lighting set up for me and I am loving the quality it gives my content
I am doing everything from my iPhone, and just added a Boya-BY-M1 mic and a cheap ring light from Amazon (well both from Amazon.) I am using Adobe Premiere (now) to edit my videos, but that is because my wife already had the adobe account for her graphic design - and it really does help to up the production quality on my videos.
I hope you see this and respond😊. First of all Hey girl from SC! I started recording Sunday School lessons for my church due to the pandemic. It’s been a huge learning curve. My biggest struggle is sound! I have 2 teenagers and an almost 2 year old in a very small house! Sometimes I can’t record until the baby is asleep and I’m hiding in a dark corner of my room. Anyway most of my viewers are older and the sound of my AC or the baby playing in another room picks up on the camera. Is there a way to drown out background noise? I’m just trying to serve my church and God well,. It looks as though online Sunday School is our new norm.
I just started in September at 267 subscriber's and 400 hours of watch time!! I'm building my Instagram and Facebook to promote my channel. I love your videos thanks for sharing!
Talk about the algorithm and I'm using inshot and once I get done editing the canvas was horrible. It wasn't the right size and when I click the UA-cam default option it doesn't fit still.
i have been watching many beginner videos and still am at an utter loss about editing the videos. i take some that i already have and use YT editor, win10 editor has been suggested too. I haven't found anyone with a "dummies" approach. I'm a techie once i figure it out im good. you mentioned a guy in your video but i don't see a link to his channel.
iPhones are EXPENSIVE! I'm using (for everyday use) one of the cheapest phones I could find. It works for everything I need - EXCEPT - that it is always running out of storage capacity. I am happy with the quality of photos I get out of it, but not sure it would work for longer videos, because of the lack of storage. Just wondering if anyone has experience using a CHEAP-A** phone to create UA-cam videos??
Ironically, I'm watching this and getting more and more irritated with your echoing. How do we stop that? My second question is...is it better to be prepared before a video, such as having items being discussed or does it matter?
It's not the equipment that matters, it's the will and passion to create amazing videos.
