I was given one to review for a website when they were first released, was super impressed when I first saw DOOM running on it.
Larry Bundy Jr hello you....
Oh hello you
HELLOOOO YOOOOOU!
Still have my GP32Blu, what an amazing device. For the time the quality of this device was very good and it was insanely powerful. Being able to run SNES, Megadrive and Neo Geo games on the go was just a dream. To this day I still love this handheld. Imported it from LikSang to Portugal and I still have the fondest memories of it...
I feel wiser and enlightened in the ways and knowledge of handheld gaming....
I remember having one of these in the mid 2000s, took ages to get one as they were all from sellers outside of the uk and hardly any of them accepted PayPal. Being able to watch DivX videos on the go was amazing though, even if the frame rate wasn't the best
Still have my GP32 BLU I imported back in the early 2000's! Such an incredible machine. The idea of an open source handheld blew my mind back then.
And despite buying it for emulation, I ended up falling in love with both the Homebrew and Commercial titles as well!
I totally forgot about these. I remember I was soooo close to buying one back in the day, because it could emulate all the 16-bit (and earlier) systems for the most part. At the time, that was really really impressive. Never did end up grabbing one though.
Same here, being able to play 8 and 16-bit games on a handheld was amazing at the time. I was still using a Sega Nomad to play Genesis on the go not long before the GP32 came out!
I remember when this handheld came out. I always wanted this and it's spiritual spinoffs leading up to the gp2x and gp2x wiz.
I have the GP2x and the GP32 and now I'm eyeing up the RG-350. It is essentially a modern Dingoo a320. While the software library is smaller than the GP2X, the controller is better and some of the emulators run better than they did on the GP2X.
The GP32 was super popular among exporters from Hong Kong and used to emulate all the Gameboy games.
I remember this device. A good friend actually bought one. Obviously it was used for emulation. I seem to remember being quite impressed. It may have been a little power hungry. A long time ago...
I remember the GP32 though I didn't know the history, at the time I remember thinking it was a powerful piece of hardware but lacked games.
I like how everywhere you go, you appear to be walking around, inspecting everything, making sure all these countries have their shit together. You're doing God's work.
I laughed when I saw the hero or villain sign with you standing next to it like you were hatching out some dastardly plot. haha
I grew up in Georgia, USA and i convinced my parents to import me one of these in like 2002 for my birthday. I really can’t remember how i heard about them but i loved it. It taught me a lot about how computers worked. I did not know any of the stuff having to do with the Korean government though so thanks for sharing.
Still have my boxed GP32 with the official case and a couple of boxed games up in the attic. Bought it at launch as was blown away that I could play SNES games on it.
You never let us down my friend. Yet another console I’ve never heard of. You are the man when it comes to rare and weird stuff! Happy holidays my friend.
Wow never knew about this game system!! Great video Mr. Top hat gaming man!!
the GP32 is the only reason why i've ever owned a SmartMedia card ... :P
Great video - really like your coverage of retro games and especially these obscure retro consoles.
I had a GP32, (I might still have it, time for a trip to the attic!).
Yeah I nearly bought one of these backintday but never did sadly. Good content sir, I say suits you sir!
Same here!
Yeah this was lusted over back in the day!
I remember this thing. Eventually ended up snagging a Caanoo. Little did I know that would be the handheld's final iteration.
Touhou the kiddy
Same Here, was back then about to get the WiZ but then suddendly the Caanoo came out. I even bought real games by using the horrible "Store" app wich is also using to Sync your Device. Rythmos was quite cool tho.
Shame I never got to give Asura Cross a try until it was available on Android with what I could only assume were worse controls.
I actually owned one of these, bought it for the emulator functions and must say it was a cracking little handheld.
After watching your videos for the last two months the reason why I realized I like watching your videos as because when you wear the hat and you do the nod that makes me want to buy that system LOL
The only bad thing about the gp32 is that if you try to buy a used one, you MUST get an SMC card from them or a CD with the launcher on it., or alternatively, it must be flashed.
When these were new, you had to register it on the GP32 website. Once registered, they would send you a program locked to your specific machine that allows you to launch the emulators. If your machine has not been flashed, or you don't have that file, it is a brick except for licensed games or as an MP3 player because the site no longer exists.
I flashed mine several years ago, which is a good thing because I lost the file that is married to my machine.
I love your channel. Keep up the great work.
I still have the spiritual successor, the GP2X and mine has serial number 6!
I bought a front lit, it was awesome! Great recap on the scene, cheers 💪🏻
A like 👍🏿 for the intro music lyrics alone. Always good content Top Hat man.
I just wonder on the amount of obscure consoles you brought with you on travel :) Good content as always!
This trip I brought with me my Sega Nomad, Nintendo Switch, Moqi 7, GP32, Neo Geo Pocket and procured a V Tech Smile Portable out here for my son.
Jesus, where did you film this??? Absolutely beautiful
yes, where is this?
This travel around the world for consoles series is really entertaining, great way to network, have fun, and entertain others!
Always wanted to buy this handheld and i was really hyped. Ultimately ditched this one and bought the successor GP2X, which i regret until today. It felt like the GP2X never recieved the same attention and support the GP32 did.
I had the GP2X and GP2X Wiz :) Ooh.. and a Tapwave Zodiac.. We're so lucky with the options we have today!! :)
LOVED my GP32 and wish I still had it, for Lacuna if nothing else. Was sorely disappointed by the GP2X but still adore my Pandora!
If I remember correctly the GP32 wasnt open sourced from launch, but was open sourced at a later date due to poor sales.
Is cant find a reference for this, it's just my memory from the time.
This console was very popular among homebrew developers thanks yo the Linux Bases OS usted by this system
I remember wanting a GP2X back in the late 2000's but the only option in my country was importing one and in the end the price was too high to justify it. One of the many consoles I read about online but have never seen in real life due to how rare they were.
I first heard of this in an issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly 🤔 They were talking about obscure gaming consoles. I always wanted one for more the novelty of how obscure it was. I never did get one. But I did get a GPH Caanoo. So I did end up getting a Game Park console...kind of. I believe the GP32 Game Park and GHP (Game Park Holdings) are two different companies.
I bought one in 2003 and later another Blu edition when it was released here at Spain. One of my favorite portable systems ever 😊. I still have them. I even bought digital games such as Pinball Dreams. Homebrew and emulation scene was great. Then I bought the next three Gamepark consoles.
What a lovely old town, I want to take a stroll here.
Blue Angelo's cover looks like it was done by Akira Toriyama.
I remember seeing it in a Retro Gamer magazine I somehow got when I was a child. I thought it looked super cool, but figured it never came out.
This console was a true magic trick out of your top hat, never heard of it.
15:40 I went from SEABASS THE GREAT to SEBASTIAN THE GREAT. Has a nice ring to it
the western GP32 community eventually became the Open Pandora and Pyra community! Check out these handhelds if you want to see mouth watering greatness ;-)
Boojakascha pity that both the Pandora and the Pyra became dumpster fires... they took too long, are now underpowered and the community kind of moved on.
@@BrunoFonsecaPT It's not a mainstream device but an enthusiast item, much like the GP32 was.
Boojakascha I know... I was not trying to troll. Just stating the facts (and mourning it at the same time as I had high expectations for both)
@@BrunoFonsecaPT dumpster fire might a bit of a strong word :D i enjoyed my pandora :P
...even though they then released a more powerful version and poor pre-orderers like me were asked to kindly pay again a big price for an upgrade ...
but i wouldn't back up the Pyra given the price and the time it was gonna take to come out... i'd rather get a GPD device.. :P
The Pandora was obsolete on Day One because it was only 3 years late to release...
But the Pyra is almost 9 years late and still not done, and is so obsolete that it's now a joke.
The GPD WIN and it's sequel WIN2 are everything the Pyra was supposed to be, plus more.
And the GPD XD series is a nice cheap alternative with android and no qwerty keypad.
GPD are the true descendants of GP.
Where does he get those wonderful thumbnails?
where did u get that amazing intro Rich
I wrote it - Mike of the UA-cam channel Treesicle performed it.
The Neo-Geo Pocket Color deserved so much better than it got.
Nice, I have one of theese… And the GP 2X and the GP 2X Wiz ;)
More about game park please.
I had the gp2x with the breakout board and played the heck out of it
Bro you're fucking stacked 00:05 I never would have thought! Also great video! The only constructive criticism I can offer is maybe get a decent mic? I'm sure you could get away with something like a Yeti (snowball?) for like 50 bucks and it would make a world of difference and give your channel a more premium quality to it :). I look forward to the next episode you put out!
Handheld history is wild!
These new age Chinese handhelds are interesting.
Yes, the Pocket Go 2 is bananas
I don't think handheld emulation machines should be lumped in with real platforms that had bespoke games made for them.
@@fattiger6957 but this was designed from the get-go to run homebrew, so I think it is.
I totally agree bro i♡handhelds
I loved this in 2003-2005 it emulated everything. It's very very hard to find one now a days, almost impossible.
Fun fact all the Android emulators you see today came from owners of this. Coders/developers with this Korean device. It went computer to gp32/gba to tapwave to (spot of history I was absent from) to Android.
The GP32 might have succeeded had they had more third party software support not just from Japan, but Europe & the US.
There was a guy wearing a hat in the intro scenes. #keephatting
Love my GP32 flu and GP2X first edition still got em and the branded ear buds, console cases and a few other bits spare parts and the like.
Oh and just to let you know it had specific distributors in Europe handling each area, it was sold from GBAX website in the UK only he had the rights to distribute it, so it was never in any shops, they did however make an appearance or two (I can't recall how many) at the electronics computer trade show in London, where they mainly tried to show off astonisha story r, What got me about their booth was they had transparent coloured GP32s on show, which I do not believe were ever sold anywhere in the world, although I think there was a astonisha story R bundle pack in Korea, I don't think that came with a coloured one, I could be wrong.
Hey THGM, do you enjoy Jethro tull? I'm listening to cross eyed Mary via LP while watching this vid. Nice vid as usual!
Also obligatory PC Engine LT please :D
Finally!
I knew about the GP32 back in the day. I think it was possible to import it through Lik-Sang.
Imported mine from good ol' Lik Sang ^_^ Loved this little device. All for princess I'm sure I still have and I think it still may power on!
Can someobody please help me? I really need to know, if I buy one, can I can load roms of the commercially released games released game on it, like Blue Angelo or Her Knights?
Never heard of this handheld console
That thing was cool
cool thx
So what kind of games were released on this handheld?
I remember the Canoo? I think it was the successor.
Are you talking in your hat or did you leave your mic in another room?
Your series around the world...is more for the world of Drácula.
This month yeah, every trip will be a different country.
is it that slow or did u slow mo for the video?
I remember reading about these back after they where released do to their emulation nature, but I've never seen one in person, never knew it was funded by the S. Korean gov, so I guess the more you know lol!
I owned one of these, and I had a blast. The only downside was the non-lit screen .
I had the gp2x wiz and I loved it to death but the screen was shit due to screen rot and it render the console useless. It was painful to lose 180.00 like that.
I didn’t know Mr Majieka advertised BBC computers!
Omg, im excited. I wanted a gp32 and gp2x back in the day. I ended getting a psp instead.
3:14 Touch it...TOUCH IT! YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO!
Had they released it with windows CE and stylus touchscreen (mainly for compatibility issues) for a price lower than PDAs went for it would have been a great success I think. I mean windows mobile/CE was a great gaming platform with huge library of commercial games, many of which were 1:1 ports of then few years old PC games such as SimCity 2000 or Worms World Party but because of high price only few people could afford them.
that lil thing looked pretty ahead of its time, and way cool how developer friendly it was too. Seems to me it pretty much had the capabalities of a DS with a flashcard, when it comes to playing music/videos and playing homebrew applications and games. Wich makes you wander how big it could've gotten if it would've caught more media attention and got more game developers on board so they could actually compete with Nintendo. Cause you might have a more powerfull device, but Nintendo had the better history, reputation and bigger library of games.
Did you ever heard about the Sega Chan? The robot made by Sega?
I loved my BLU, it was an emulation powerhouse! I beat Phantasy Star 4 on it, and the emulation was top notch.
It's not too hard to be more powerful than one of Nintendo's handhelds (Switch Lite notwithstanding)
Well the samsung Galaxy 9 and 10 have more power than the switch. It won't be long before the switch would be considered a weak console
I used to own the Gp2x
It gives me axiety to see u hold that gameboy by the ocean
Ive got the GP Wiz 😄
Great video. It would be nice if you gave a review of the device at the end of your video to let us know if it's worth getting one and what the top games for it are. This thing looks like it has some frame rate issues.
10:30 Much nicer than Sonic the Hedgehog on the GBA
Can you look at the first Mario RPG game🍄🐢
If I would have known.
I've heard about this platform back in 2002. I thought this was much cooler than Nintendo's own offerings, especially since I knew about the existence of the GameGear, which was much more powerful than the Gameboy.
I might make a usable emulator for it written in D by using some of the basics of the GBA emulator written in D, but I don't know if I want to use my time on developing an emulator for an obscure platform.
What is the town your staying in?
Sighisoura
It's funny when you consider, despite how many handheld consoles that have existed, Nintendo is the only company that has had consistent major successes with handhelds. The PSP will probably go down in history as they only popular handheld not made by Nintendo and, even then, it sold a little more than half of the DS. Everything else was mostly ignore with a few million sales (I think the PSVita is the 2nd highest selling non-Nintendo handheld with its 15 million sales)
great video.. love it. but you need to upgrade your potato audio.
More like potato air bnb with large empty rooms with high ceilings. You never know what you are going to get working on the road.
Wasn't Yokoi already dead when the color version of the Wonderswan color came out? He created the regular one imo. Also, Japan did apologize and even paid money. The dictatorship just pocketed itself. They always pretend Japan never apologized and the government made more and more bizarre demands. This always happened when there was an internal corruption scandal
Wait, are you training us to be evil?
I believe I owned the GP2X Wiz -- I believe, may be just self-inception
Gizmondo, zodiac and now this , they all failed to the gba
DaeWoo makes guns too.
I remember wanting a Game Park, unfortunately it failed. It goes to show, Nintendo could have done whatever they wanted in the handheld arena... that's why the Switch is a handheld/home/hybrid console.
If you want to talk about government... interfered with... computer and gaming markets, see China. They banned consoles because, again, consoles were Japanese and all that resulted in was Famiclone chips being installed into keyboards with some form of BASIC either pre-installed or included on a cartridge. And the iQue digital only version of the N64, whicb I think deserves a video from you Sir!
Was the frame rate really that poor on most of those games?
You know?i always get annoyed with the GBA because i just think it could've been much more, even for the time. so this console seems to be the type of system i would've liked the GBA to be instead, though it still has the same issue as the GBA with lacking buttons for fighting games. Also, i think the main problem was that they never seemed to focus to get actual game companies to produce games for it.
