Also take a walk around the buildings in your life for inspiration. Electric meters, storm drains, conduits etc. are easy little greebles to add to wall exteriors that really sell the scene. Great video as always Vince!
I must say that four years ago when I first watched this tutorial, bases were mostly an afterthought. My minis took so long to paint that it felt like I was starting all over when it came time to base them. I decided I wanted to spend more time playing and less time crafting/ painting bases. Then there was a pandemic and the time issue seemingly evaporated. I re-watched your tutorial and have added your basing tips to my bag of hobby tips. Thanks Vince.
Just got Ghazghkull Thraka for Christmas and wanted to create an urban highway base with concrete and rebar. Of course, Vince has a tutorial that is exactly what I'm looking for. Wonderful as always, thank you!
Hi great tutorial as usual. Just one little trick. Look after foam board it's really cheap and will replace the plastic card and corks for the same effect. You can texture it easily with a roller pen or with specific sculpt roller. The one I use came from green stuff world. Tks a lot and keep up the good work.
Love it! Great result without the pain in the A of dealing with plaster and much better than foamcore ruins. As always, thank you for another great video Vince
Yep, the goal is to make something cheaper, easier and something you could quickly do lots of for an army or small force without losing your mind (as plaster often makes me want to do ;) ) - thanks for watching and commenting.
Okay had to give it a shot last night for one of my 50mm Dark Age Dragyri (you NEED to try Dark Age btw!), doing a nice skirmish force this way is absolutely doable in an evening! trying to get a hold of some "TERRAINS CONCRETE" from AK interactive and test it out, the texture should be perfect for this
You could add texture to the plastic card before glue it to the cork, so it is easier to sand it. Alternatively I have found that backing soda makes for a very fine texture, so that could be used as well. Sanding seems much faster though. Ps I found that Vallejo Texture Desert Sand has a little less fine of a texture compared to backing soda. As in Backing soda looks more like sand than Desert Sand does.
Great stuff vince! If I may make a suggestion about the rebar. It would be awesome to bend it a little and leave some concrete on a few of them. Usually, they don't break out clean like that. Can't wait to see you paint it up.
Thanks for the video, it's great. In it, you mention using the Vallejo paste to do a stucco effect on the wall: would you recommend using the White pumice (or any color pumice) for that, or a different one of the textures? Most of the stucco recommendations I've seen from hobby people have been to use spackling, but I'm not in love with anything I've seen from them. I've seen a few use Das for it, and that seems to work alright, but it is a bit messy to work with. Unfortunately I couldn't find any stucco videos from Mel (just a wattle and daub one, which is close).
My standard zenithal and prep for terrain like this. 1) German Black-Grey Primer 2) Zenithal Cold Grey 3) Zenithal White 4) Ivory Drybrush 5) Nuln Wash Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting.
The problem is, with that smooth edge it still looks more like gravel sandwiched between two 15 mm sheets of steel. Have you tried using some acrylic wood filler instead of plasticard? It usually gives just the right texture to imitate concrete at this scale and can be easily sanded to give even smoother surface.
That's why I like to finish it off with the plastic putty, I mentioned it, but didn't do it on this for lack of time, but it solves that problem. I have also played around with White Stone from vallejo and that tends to also have a nice stucco effect.
Yes, I roughed it up after, but you are correct, it's a good idea to change the order, just so you can more easily access the cork. I like to mix sandpaper and deeper scratches, as I like it to be quite worn.
I know it’s an older video, but do you recall the thickness of the plasticard you used? I tried some for a different project and it just broke apart on me.
look forward to the painting ..it's a great idea, the plaster though... looks odd as it wouldn't overlap like that ...a small ungrateful point :) so much can be done with this idea..
Looks good! What bricks are you using in this video? I bought some from greenstuffworld but they are boring and not broken like the ones you are using in this video. Thank you!
I may have mentioned it too quickly or forgotten it, but the other alternatives are 1) You can use something like the vallejo white stone paste and smooth it out for a more stucco look. You can also use something like DAP wall putty and smooth and sand that to make it look more like a solid piece (so you don't have the cork/plasticard distinction you then have to cover up).
No idea on the type, but yes, I got it from Amazon, it's a generic multi-pack. Something like this - www.amazon.com/Litko-Game-Accessories-NA-Plasticard/dp/B00MR5EIN6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1502887620&sr=8-1&keywords=plasticard+sheets
Looks pretty good with a lick of paint on! I especially like the little story the row of three bullet holes tells. It's little details like that you might not notice, but which really sell the piece. Question though, if it's a concrete building, where did the bricks come from? :P
Hmmm...let's say there was a brick facade, or maybe some under the ground on an old layer of the city ;) - thanks, glad you liked it. For me, you have to work in the little touches to keep it interesting.
I really liked this videos, and you do a lot of the same things that I do. This makes me feel good when such a high level creative guy is doing the same thing :) LOVE what you do with the wrecked walls though, I use the Cities of Death terrain as I have tons of it.
I'm going to assume that free people are getting min size bumped to 20 on most or all of the battleline choices. What does that mean? Running Bret knights as battleline just for a lot more appealing! Which means I should probably get around to painting all of those guys eventually. It also means the Halberdier horde is back! Giant mass of cheap troops at 2+/4+/-1 sounds like a thing to me. A horde discount on Greatswords would be pretty sweet too. I've had 30 of those bros sitting on my shelf gathering dust for a while now because they're so slow, but make them cheaper and they might be more appealing, especially if we get allegiance abilities that synergize well with it.
I assume you meant to leave this on the other video and it rolled forward - cursed auto-play. That being said, I agree, I think that this will also make brets even better as they will now have a free people's allegiance which could be very awesome.
Yo Vince I accidentally disliked it and UA-cam said that feedback has been shared with the creator. It was a mistake, forgive me and bless my brush hand my liege

Just when I think my level of amazement at Vince's video's have hit a plateau... wow, this is so so good. I can't wait to try it.

That's awesome, happy to hear and help. :)

Have fun!

Nice, I will look into that and give it a try! Thanks for sharing, it's greatly appreciated.
You're SO close to doing terrain tutorials! Great vid

This is quite a bit late, but I just saw this comment and checked out their textures. They have AMAZING texture paints. Thank you Aviad!

Nice suggestion. :)
Love the advice you give. Opens up a new and simple way of looking at things.
Thank you, very happy to help as always. :)

Good call, I should put a few small pieces of cork stuck on and bend a few, good thinking sir.
That is one nice looking base! I look forward to the painting video.
Thank you, it will be coming next week as per usual :)
As always, another fantastic video. Getting a lot of inspiration from your basing videos, giving me plenty of ideas for future projects.
Awesome, glad to hear they are helping and inspiring, that is always the goal. :)
6:00 if you get a file or whet stone you can easily sharpen your blade very quickly. ....I think it's actually faster than changing the blade.
Well, I buy surgical steel in 100 packs quite cheap and at this point, I can change them in about 10 seconds, so... ;)
Love these basing videos! Learning so much.
Basing is always fun, it's just great to create little worlds.
I love the Cooper's Hawk pen! Good show!
That's funny, I hadn't even realized I had a branded pen in the video :) - Thanks, happy to help as always.
Cooper's Hawk was one of my favorite jobs, and the pens are distinctive.
Great vid, I'm going to use some of these techniques this week
Great video. Just in time for my decision on what to base my Tyranids on.
Awesome, glad to help as always.

Any of the textures will work, between clay, stucco and many other wall types, they all fit, it's just what you want.
Thank you too for that great tutorial.
What colors did you use at the end for that result? Black primer and than?
My standard zenithal and prep for terrain like this.
1) German Black-Grey Primer
2) Zenithal Cold Grey
3) Zenithal White
4) Ivory Drybrush
5) Nuln Wash
Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Vince Venturella ah, thanks a lot.
loving it so far cant wait for the painting bit :-)
It should be very fun for sure and I like how this looks painted up.
Great video! Could you use foam board for this instead of the cork/plasticard combo?
Absolutely, there is like a compressed foamboard that is perfect for it. I've since used it for this purpose and it's wonderful.
The problem is, with that smooth edge it still looks more like gravel sandwiched between two 15 mm sheets of steel. Have you tried using some acrylic wood filler instead of plasticard? be a good idea to roughen up the plasticard with some coarse sandpaper before applying it to the cork
This was pretty thin, I don't remember the exact thickness, but maybe 1/16th.
look forward to the painting ..it's a great idea, the plaster though... looks odd as it wouldn't overlap like that ...a small ungrateful point :) so much can be done with this idea..
Yes, one additional thing I should do and that I mentioned is to add the plastic putty to corners and such to make it look more smooth.
Looks good! What bricks are you using in this video? I bought some from greenstuffworld but they are boring and not broken like the ones you are using in this video. Thank you!
Pegasus bricks, I like them as they are quite varied.
Thank you!
Oh, sorry, the next question. How thick is your cork board? And I think the cardboard is really thin, right?
Yes, I think the corkboard is 1/4 inch (I picked it from the craft store). The plasticard is super thin yes. I get it in big multi-packs from Amazon.
Excelent tutorial, Thank you!
One thing though, I don't recall you bringing up plasti-card substitute like you stated in the beginning?
I may have mentioned it too quickly or forgotten it, but the other alternatives are 1) You can use something like the vallejo white stone paste and smooth it out for a more stucco look. You can also use something like DAP wall putty and smooth and sand that to make it look more like a solid piece (so you don't have the cork/plasticard distinction you then have to cover up).

Great video as usual Vince. What brand is the plasticard and is it available on amazon?
No idea on the type, but yes, I got it from Amazon, it's a generic multi-pack. Something like this - www.amazon.com/Litko-Game-Accessories-NA-Plasticard/dp/B00MR5EIN6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1502887620&sr=8-1&keywords=plasticard+sheets
where do you get plastic card?
Amazon or any traditional hobby store, you can buy big packs of it.
Getting a set of guitar string is great for bits and pieces like pipes and tubes.
Yep, that kind of stuff can be additional great touches.
I already like the new music :)
I like it, and it doesn't seem to draw fraudulent copyright bots. ;)
I really liked this videos, and you do a lot of the same things that I do. This makes me feel good when such a high level creative guy is doing the same thing :) LOVE what you do with the wrecked walls though, I use the Cities of Death terrain as I have tons of it.
Great share as always good sir
Thank you sir, much appreciated!
This is brilliant
Thank you, always happy to help. :)
this is amazing, bud
Thank you, happy to help as always. :)

Vince Venturella yeah that was definitely an autoplay problem haha
Fantastic
Thank you! Cheers!
You’re going to poke your hand when you’re gaming with those wires sticking out.
Well, I haven't yet. :)
Yo Vince I accidentally disliked it and UA-cam said that feedback has been shared with the creator. It was a mistake, forgive me and bless my brush hand my liege
sci fi? that could be a ww2 base. no scifi here at all
Totally fair, completely works for either, as someone who never does historicals, I guess I only think in Fantasy/Sci-Fi. ;)
