Four fundamentals of marksmanship, gentlemen; you have to keep those four fundamentals in mind while you are shooting--steady position, trigger squeeze, breathing, sight picture. I doubt it. You go to the pit when you fuck up something simple that you've been shown how to do, like wear your uniform right, or remember your rifle's serial number, or report correctly. And even then, it's after you've been given multiple chances to get yourself right. Some people just aren't good shooters. Now, maybe it's because these guys didn't listen to what they were taught, maybe they were just nervous, maybe cocky, any number of things. But sometimes, just the disappointment in your instructor's voice, like we heard here, is enough to motivate you. Even more than the smoke session. When he just says "Thanks for making me look stupid", and walks away, that's like saying "You suck so bad, you're not even worth my time to smoke your sorry ass."

@@sourarmoredhero7765 Were you there? Did you see it? If not, then you don't know. I admit, I wasn't there, either, you could be right, and he wore their asses out. But I don't think he did. There's no training value in it. What would they learn from being smoked? "Don't fail on the range"? They already know that, they just had a bad day, but they WILL qualify, later. You can't graduate, until you qualify. And getting smoked isn't always the best training tool.
I'm retired Air Force, so it's been a while since I was in training, but I remember it well. The worst feeling I ever had was in Tech School. One of the other Airmen talked funny, and we would chuckle about him, but this one day, I was just laughing my head off, in formation, and SSgt Harwell caught me. Yelled at me to come here, and asked me "What the hell is so funny?" I told him I was laughing at the way this guy talked. Not something I was proud of, but it was the truth, however ugly. He just looked at me, with this disgusted look, turned around, and walked away. No "Drop and give me 20", no "Get your ass in my office", no "Enjoy your 12 hour detail this weekend, while all your friends are out having fun". Just turned and walked away from me. I never felt like such a sack of shit, in my whole life. I also never laughed at that guy, or anyone else, ever again.

@@sourarmoredhero7765the only guys I saw get smoked at the range was if they seriously messed up on safety instructions. We had one dude get absolutely destroyed for shooting a shot down range when the firing line wasn’t ready plus there was someone down there. Another guy got fucked up for the same thing but he had his weapon on burst and fired off about 9 shots. Not only did the coaches have fun with those guys but the DIs had their way with them too once we got back to the squad bay. Unless stuff like that happens unks won’t be sent to the sand pit for failing especially if they were a weapons drop
