- Roger McGuinn solo performance of the Byrds hit "Turn Turn Turn". While this is from his instructional video, this video was on his web site for downloading for several months. Try www.homespuntapes.com to order Roger's instructional DVD and see in detail the techniques used in Turn, Turn,Turn and other Byrds classics. Roger's DVD is also available on Amazon.com
Note to Roger McGuinn's fans: UA-cam sent me a note explaining that this video may be infringing copyright but no action was required on my part (they have not requested that I remove this video).
Let me make my views clear: I posted this video to increase interest in Roger and possibly increase sales of his instructional DVD for which I provide a link.
Lately there has been a rash of UA-cam take-downs of cover performances by amateur musicians, usually initiated by complaints of music publishing companies.
It strikes me as foolish for music publishing companies to force UA-cam to remove cover performances of popular songs (the Eagles have been especially heartless about this). These amateur cover performances are actually forms of flattery to the songwriter and the performer; they make not one red cent for the teenager that creates the cover, but they increase interest and buzz for the original song and its creators.
Normally I'd ascribe this heartlessness to greed, but squashing interest in music is going to affect these artists who foster the take-downs in a very negative way. Our copyright and patent system is being abused lately and it only stifles innovation.
Cheers, Jim Lynch
I love it when recording artists actually show how they played their songs. It's not only to teach us but to leave an archive of their work & technique. Invaluable.
I have a Rickenbacker 330-12 string and you cannot fully appreciate McGuinn's exquisite guitar skills until you try to replicate his finger pick / strum patterns. McGuinn was an original. He extended the capability of an instrument and created "a sound". I am always in awe of this musical pioneer.
Yes.
Roger slipped in banjo picking ,that's his secret ingredient.
This man is outstanding guitar player, Many people have tried to imitate his guitar rhythm in this song, but none come close to it so far
He sounds like a whole band unto himself with the mighty Rickenbacker 12-string!
The Rickenbacker is so darn good 😀
You can say what you like but that's guitar playing at its best.
That hybrid picking of his is something else!
Jasper Yangchareon no kidding, banjo rolls I believe. Sounds great!
@@sambassbo93 It probably doesn't hurt that he started out on banjo.
We don't often get to watch a master at work up close. That's good stuff.
The intro and ending progression to this song is perhaps the most powerful hook in contemporary music.
The bridge is also excellent.
Probably not as powerful as Like A Rolling Stone, or Sunshine Of Your Love. And definitely not as powerful or
recognizable as Purple Haze or even Mr. Tambourine Man. Close, but no cigar ...
@@larrypower8659 Larry, were you born annoying or do you have to practice alot?
@@larrypower8659 I find the opening to be the epitome of the 60s…even more so than mr tambourine man. It just rings of that time period, hence why it was used in forest gump.
@@Jeffcatbuckeye Hard to disagree.
Wow, just found this .. what a performance. He sounds like the whole band👍😎
Roger Mcguinn, excellent musician and excellent personality!
Met him at a sound check. A true gentleman. When he hit the opening chords with that reverb, I looked over at his wife. She said it gives her goosebumps every time he plays it.
McGuinn's 360-12 created the signature sound that was The Byrds of the 1960's. Great stuff.........
Wow is right! When playing a 12 String, t is INCREDIBLE to not accidentally mute an octave string, or to have some hiccups in your playing. Roger McGuinn is playing for over 3 full minutes with the airy chime that myself, and countless experienced musicians only get for brief moments at a time when playing. AMAZING!
Roger McGuinn is an American treasure.

Amen. I wish Gene Clark was still with us. Gene was an amazing dude. No Other blows me away. Rock on...
He should receive a Kennedy Center honor for his enormous contribution to American music.
A global treasure!
He is such a great and humble dude 😀
Yes he is.
Roger McGuinn is one of the gifts from God that he gave to this planet to help mankind! I was 12 year old when I first heard of Roger, and now I am 68 years old and STILL am in awe of his talent.
I must have been the same age when I first heard McGuinn because I too am 68 and his sound still thrills me.
I'm 66 and lifelong fan of his.
I'm going to be 70 in 2 months, and I vividly remember hearing Turn, Turn. Turn when it came out in 1965, and it still is my favorite song of all time. I rember the day I bought the album as a 12 year old at the White Front store (a discount department store that preceded stores like Target. It was thrilling then and thrilling now.
Yes one of the best songs ever❤
I grew up watching guitar heroes like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Malmsteen, etc thanks to my dad and my uncles. But I was far more impressed by this particular clip. Saw it when I was 14, I had never seen anything like it. Something finally made me pick up the guitar and learn to play. Roger McGuinn will always be my first "true" guitar hero.
I have the full video. Roger is an exceptional guitar player and singer, and was the one who held the group together over the years, from the David Crosby era to the final period with Clarence White. They would have broken up without Roger. As David Crosby once said, the sound of the Rickenbacker 12 is the "signature sound" of the Byrds.
Perfect 😀
Mr McGuinn and that Rickenbacker is a timeless, iconic sound that is etched into my mind & heart.
The heart stops at the start, then sways and sings through each memorable note. Ending in peace and wanting more. The ultimate replay.
"And Roger Mcguinn had a twelve string guitar, and it was like nothing i'd ever heard."
....and that what makes this tune so great 😃
Roger’s picking is so distinctive and intricate, especially those banjo rolls in the instrumental break. A national treasure indeed.
Rickenbacker...... Its a fantastic sounding guitar & this is one of my all time fav songs just a great great sound & Roger makes the guitar sing!! Big thumbs up from Foxy!!
The Byrds were by far one of , if not , THE Quintessential , and Most Influential Folk - Rock Band to ever shape the sounds of 1960's music...period !!! They are truly in a class...all their own !!! And are one of the many bands that splinted off to form more influential bands to come !!! Their influence and mentorship can still be felt to this day !!!
Back when the Earth was cooling, I met Roger and i told him that the break in Turn was the slickest piece of guitar work I'd ever heard.
this here is the backbone member of the fabulous Byrds, and his dominance as an overall player ought to be very obvious on this alone.
Just wow. Look at that fingerpicking solo
Amazing performance and such crafty work with chord movements
After watching this guy play the guitar, I have realized how badly I suck at playing it. just Incredible.
Excellence. No band required, lead rhythm and bass in one, a master of the 12 string guitar.
Wow! Roger sounds as good as he did years ago. This is what pure raw talent sounds like. We need more like this in todays world. Great Rickenbacker sound as well.
His singing is great, but that guitar playing is phenomenal!
You put the radio or the tv on and the only thing you hear is about crime, catastrophes, hunger, war etc... and then you see this vid. There are still beautiful things in this World!!!
Absolutely love the sound of that Rickenbacker !!!!!! You know that sound instantly.
Thank You my Brother in Christ !!! Singing that Song brings tears to my eyes as I'm so thankful for God's Love as I know you are. Lets pray all our friends come to the truth before the end ! May God Bless you and the Mrs. See you next time you come to "The Egg" in Albany or up this way in Saratoga.
We need to continue to pray and help one another 😇☺
RIP Tom Petty another Rickenbacker rocker! He played 6 string. Probably still does.
Rock on Tom...
Great rumbling solo!
RIP Pete Seeger the Banjoist who wrote the song
Good to know 😀
Roger McGuinn, john squire and johnny marr ..my favorites guitar players
It's so good good to hear your voice and the sweet voice of your Ric on UA-cam. All the best from a lifelong admirer. Can you hear me clapping at the end of your performance?
And thanks Roger for sparking an interest in the Bible that will not quit.
Wow what a masterpiece, how talented is that !
He turned the book of Ecclesiastes chapter 3 verse 1-8 into a song.
@@thevacuumtubejunky9774 Actually, Pete Seeger did.
Wow. Fast fingers. I could practice that for years and not be able to do that. Bravo.
That Rickenbacker has been with Roger McGuinn for 50 years now and has become simply an extension of the man himself. The Byrds were the greatest 60's band to come out of L.A. and it was due, in no small part, to Roger McGuinn. I hope he plays that Rick until time itself has expired.
I Like Roger McGuinn He’s my favourite guitarist
awesome! i had no idea he used banjo picks on his fingers. probably explains how he gets that chiming sound!
Pete Seger, the artist that wrote this song sadly passed away yesterday 1 27 14.May he forever rest in peace.Turn Turn Turn is truly one of the greatest rock song ever recorded .
You didn't know Seeger was also Solomon?
Triggers Libtards I think Bill Miller said that Pete Seeger wrote the song and not the lyrics. So there is no dispute with Solomon or any other biblical guy.
C Eduardo
@TheDpoppop RIP Pete Seeger you'll always love the Byrds cover of your song.
Just Beautiful ! Great Song ! Great Guitar ! Great Message !
Absolutely gorgeous. I cannot heap enough praise on this.mesmerizing! Written by the great Pete Seeger
Watching this - if you teach yourself Dave Crosby's harmony you can pretend you're a Byrd singing with him. I recommend it!
wonderful---thanks, Roger!!!
This song, especially the Byrd’s version, is one of the positive and iconic songs of the ‘60’s. I had the good fortune to see Bill Frisell and his band ( the Tony Scheer, Kenny Wolleson, Greg Leisz version) perform this in Santa Barbara a few years ago. Pete Seeger had passed a few months before and there were no dry eyes in the audience. The sweetness of those big, chiming chords is overwhelming. Thanks to Roger McGuinn for turning Pete’s vision into an anthem for all time.
Agree 100% with you.
I had been toying with guitar since I was 8. Hearing this song by the Byrds made me get more serious and I saved 2 years to buy a 12 string.
Roger McGuinn is my hero. A true musician.
JAVIER GARCIA SOLER I translated Javier's comment via Google Translate:
This is the true essence of music, for me, a single instrument, a voice, and the whole feeling in the world, condensed into three minutes. And nothing can have more beauty, or gotten better than a musician who is able to convey so much with so little artifice. I deny much music as developed in the studios, but to issues like this I can only take my hat and applaud.
I saw him live back in the 60's with the rest of the Byrds
Right on, Jim. I make videos of my flower art and use a lot of folk music--lately from concerts I find. Promoting your favorite artists should be encouraged. I've used a lot of tracks from a '78 concert by Roger and Gene doing some new (then) songs and some Byrds hits. The only copyright noise was from the publisher of one of Gene's songs. On another note, I think it's great that Roger has returned to his folk roots and has become a wandering troubadour! He is a genius on that 12-string!
2:00 in to the song is the sickist part!! Love how he picks the strings like a banjo, simply the best 12 string musician
Crikey...Roger certainly knows how to play a Rickenbacker! Not one duff note on a Ric 12 string with such intricate picking on such a thin neck takes some doing.
Just the usual Roger (Jim) McGuinn -utterly brilliant!
I lived thru the 60's...and to this day...this song resonates like every few others...it's tmeless...and can speak to us all..if we listen.
This has to be one of the best songs ever written. Simple, beautiful.
My goodness gracious, this is so beautiful and looks so difficult. Amazingly done.
Is it just me? Or has anyone else noticed that if the vibrato in Roger's voice are 'subdued' what you then have is George Harrison!Roger's tone and intonation are the same as George's were...you can hear it quite well in the "Something" vocal.(it was sublime to hear Roger play...all 'crisp & clear' w/o any added 'junk'...he's really working that knee keeping a 4/4 together and a double-8 at the same time!)
What a great song...Roger's one of my favorites...a real Artist..Love the way he plays...and yes...he is a national treasure...
"""" So sweet song , I Love it . !!!!
Listening to this song ALWAYS licks my mood up a few notches. Thanks Roger.
Nice of you to post this, I didn't buy the video. But I'm going to look into it. Didn't know it had complete performances when I first heard about it. I'm 68, so my hands aren't what they used to be. Gave up on guitar twenty years ago, but still have a piano - much easier on the hands. I thought this was only an instructional video for guitar players. I have Roger's 1977 concert video, and it's too bad he didn't release more hard copy (DVD) concerts later on. At least we have youtube, and Roger's channel to keep us up to date. Why, oh why is there no Sweethearts tour DVD? I sure would buy that. I liked what you had to say. The video is still up, so "so far, so good". Roger was going through changes during this period, good changes. Moving away from the folk den, and on to his fascinating work with Marty Stuart was a great happening.
If you could explain to me how a deity who created billions of galaxies and billions of us is also a deity who, as the designer, knows how His creations will behave but punishes them with eternal pain for behaving according to their design, then I might trusteth.
More importantly, "trusteth"?
I think Roger has de-tuned each string a half a tone lower than standard for this demonstration.
ya think
On the Homespun VHS I used to have he says he detuned the 12 string half step and he puts a capo on the second fret and shows what it sounds like at standard pitch. Either way Roger Mcguinn Makes it sound great! my inspiration to play 12 string guitar was Roger Mcguinn. Byrds Rock! mixture of all types of music So TRue they did Folk Pop and Psychedelic. Eight Miles High is the best folk rock Single ever in my Opinion of coarse. Roger helped invent country rock and he has a great solo career Seen him 2 times a few years ago with my wife Jennifer Great concert and When he does Eight miles high He gets a standing ovation for over 5 minutes! totally Awesome A very Humble and appreciative man. A Great Musician!
@@michaelgibson5047 But wait, if you de-tune a 1/2 half step and put the capo on the 2nd fret (12 full step up) that does not make it standard, but 1/2 up, right ?
gorgeous----what a talent!!
James Lynch
I have a 12 string Electric Guitar made by Cozart. The Wider neck is profiled very akin to a Classical Guitar Neck & that's good because it allows your fingers to have more room to form that A Major Chord which on a Thinner neck 12 string can often feel really cramped. Rickenbacker 12 string Guitars have a thinner neck which is the same width as the 6 string Guitar but the fretboard also has a Sharper Radius so the string spacing is correct.
Rickenbacker also makes 12s with wider fingerboards and string spacing. The 660/12 solid and 1993Plus semi-hollow.
It’s this man’s fault that I bought a maple glow 360/12 thank you Roger
Thanks
I grew up in L.A. and was of the Class of 1965. We use to hangout @ The Troubadour on Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood which is where Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark and Chris Hillman first met. Though many talk about Gene Clark as the father of the Byrds I have argued, for many years, that while McGuinn might not have been the father of the Byrds he WAS the driving force (and the sound of his 12 string Rick the origin of the Byrds trademark signature sound) of the Byrds; one of the BEST ever.
Thank you so much for posting this video. It is truly wonderful to listen to an artist of this calibre.
Amazing changes and strum/picking style and beautiful vocal! Genius. I love Gene Clark too.
I, normally, don't share Facebook videos, but Roger McGuinn of the Byrds is simply amazing. :-)
Timeless.... Genius.... Touching.... There are no other words for it.
Thanks .......
Seeger snd Dylans music brought to a level of beauty only Roger can play
Thank God i got to see him perform solo - to really appreciate his talent!!!
Fantastic..... Does it really matter who influenced who, just listen to Roger singing and playing this great song and appreciate how good he is solo!!.... Foxy!!...
Underrated. You got that correct. Honest, genuine, brilliant.
Obviously Roger made this his own song as he did with his arrangement of Tambourine Man by Bob Dylan. Btw: if it's in public domain it's up for grabs. And it's not practical to have the royalties go to a dead end in an unknown abyss somewhere. Also Did you know that in the original Byrds Recording Contract Roger got no royalties from his work with the Byrds- nothing ! - SFA ! So if he gets paid now it's long overdue. He's a Genius. And yes- He deserves to eat and sleep and work in a decent place. Besides, he has a great voice... Now - shutup and play yer Guitar !
It was written by Pete Seeger, and arranged for the Byrds by Jim McGuinn, er Roger. Anyway, Seeger was hardly a man that would have chased someone down for royalties for his work. He in fact was well known for sending money back to his record label and telling them not to charge so much for his records. He was a humble man.
WootTootZoot It was taken from the Bible. Pete didn't write it. He just put it too music.
MR94RB4 Yes, the passages were from the Book of Ecclesiastes, but Pete added the "Turn, Turn, Turn" refrain to the chorus and added the very last line "A Time for peace I swear it's not too late". King Solomon and Pete Seeger, not too shabby for an author's list, right?
James Lynch I knew that and I should have worded it better.
MR94RB4
The sequence of the words was changed, and you know full well what is meant by "written". Quit splitting hairs over nothing.
brilliant - that's how to play a guitar - none of this speed tapping and nose diving rubbish
Remember when the performer did't scream at you and understood what they were saying?
almailman
Vocals these days are pretty bad. Even Leadbelly sang with clarity and power without yellin' like a fool.
Yeah, we could sure use a Roger McGuinn now.
We have a Roger McGuinn now. I saw him 2 weeks ago. He was amazing!
Beautiful song from the Bible, played and sang by an amazing guitarist! I remember when they Byrds first played this, and it's still life changing and one of my favorite songs! I like getting to watch his finger work up close. Thank you!!
Everything is great ! The song the sound the voice !!Roger is a master !!!!!!!
stunning guitar playing
Wow what a musician, there's not to many talented people around anymore.
Agreed. The overuse of digital sampling and AutoTune effects has made people who produce music lazy. Everything sounds so robotic these days.
*PURE ARTISTRY*
Perhaps one of the best guitar solos ever in the middle? He switches it up a little bit on this version but what a legendary lick.
I agree. If you listen to the album version, there are two 12-strings going during the solo. One is doing a rather complex Travis-picking pattern and the other is simply playing the melody. When they played live (see the Ed Sullivan version), Roger does a neat trick where the melody part is done by his index/thumb pick and his two finger-picks are doing a dinga-dinga-dinga bit (as shown in this video too). These days where he's by himself, he is doing a nice chord strumming which gives a better rhythm effect. He rarely plays the guitar solo during his touring performance these days.
I'm a sucker for those voice lead melody solos where they just play it straight, this is probably one of the best examples (the record version). Here he handles the 'two guitar' problem very well all things considered, very classy player.
maybe it is always a time to hear again this rarely eternal song...
Just perfect guitar playing.
Sweet..
your music will live on for generations to come...
Everytime I watch this I want to take my guitar and make a coffee table out of it - will never touch this guy! (but I love him!)
They were the best of times ..
I love his guitar so cold
Greatest 12-string player in history.
Any chance of you sharing your tab with me? I'm a novice Ric 12 string player and I'd love to see what you came up with!
Thanks...
p.s. nothing like the Byrds.
Seen Mr Mcguinn play at wolf trap in 2003. Then again in 2014. Very humble and knowledgeable gentle. Spoke to his wife camillia both times very nice lady. True muscian great time had for all.
Saw him in Athens ga with REM rythm section as back up. Phenomonal.
