    Wow Roger... that song brings back so many memories of times when I stood in my room picking Byrds songs on my Hagstrom electric 12 string that my dad bought me for my 16th Birthday. You were my hero. I hung onto every word in the Byrds songs and watched all the tv broadcasts in our area of you guys. I tried to imagine what it was like to play guitar in the Byrds and I even thought about writing you and asking if I could play guitar in the Byrds... ha ha ha. Even today after all these years the Byrds are still my favorite group.

      That's dedication and pure fan enthusiasm. With the digital universe now, you probably could create a scenario where you're playing with The Byrds. The Byrds have always been a big favorite of mine as well, that is the band while at least McGuinn and Hillman were still together (Notorious Byrd Bros), not the later version when only McGuinn remained.

    I still remember listening to Roger and Chris playing this and other classic songs in 1980 (or it was '81?) in Turin. The heroes of my teenage years at last were playing in front of me and they were far better live than in any records (and it's not something common at all). The following night I was invited on stage by Chris (Hillman) to play with The Flying Burrito Bros. I'll never forget those days.....

    On my copy of the Mr. Tambourine Man album, on the back with the photo of The Byrds onstage at Ciro's, I wrote "God" on McGuinn's shirt. I played this song onstage more times than I can count...along with many other Byrdsongs. The Byrds changed my life. Thanks Roger, for nearly 60 years of unbridled joy!

    Roger McGuinn! A living legend at this point! Lennon’s gone and so is Harrison. They were the main guys who popularized the Rickenbacher guitar. 🎸 McGuinn is the last one standing. God, what a player!
    I picked up a Rickenbacher at a music store once to play and see what it sounded like.
    It was a 12 string. And I could barely play it.
    It turns out you have to press harder on two strings than one to get it to play clean chords or solos. After a few strums, I put it back and gained a new respect for whoever can play one properly. And McGuinn is the Master guitar 🎸 picker and the Rickenbacher fits him perfectly.
    It’s like Fate! He was born to play it. So thanks Roger McGuinn for keeping the Jingle Jangle going! 💥🔥🎸😎

      Wow that must have been incredible!

    • @chrisst8922
      @chrisst8922 4 роки тому

      I use both sixes and twelves and I'm not sure about having to press harder although I've had them a long time so it's hard to judge.
      If I try that I mute the adjoining strings and it goes all muffled. Playing a lot is important because your fingers get calloused and that makes for more accurate fretting. I try to forget about the differences and just get on with it.
      In one of his videos McQuinn shows how his chord shapes must be different because the courses are so closely positioned.
      He's certainly the authority on (electric) twelve strings

    I discovered this and was very surprised that Roger McGuinn had re-recorded the song as a solo performance (that is, with some backing players). What surprised me more is how great this sounds, especially with his double-tracked vocals and the lively guitar work. Very clean and crystalline sound quality. My only quibble is with the fact that it sounds kind of light/playful, compared with the more biting tone of the original.

    • @jeffmurdock8321
      @jeffmurdock8321 4 місяці тому

      The original was done by studio session players (The Wrecking Crew) so that's why it is different.

    • @timj9418
      @timj9418 4 місяці тому

      @@jeffmurdock8321 No, it wasn't. The Byrds played on the song, not the Wrecking Crew studio musicians. Those studio musicians played on the original recording of "Mr. Tambourine Man" but otherwise the members of The Byrds played on virtually everything the band did after that, and this song was penned for a later album, "Younger Than Yesterday".

      @@timj9418 Interesting. I'll buy that. Here's something fun. Listen to "Don't Worry Baby" by The Beach Boys. It sounds like "Tambourine Man" cuz the Crew played both songs in the same day. Cheers, M8!
