  • Star Trek: The Next Generation shows us what life would be like if technology made our lives better. Most sci-fi movies show technological dystopias: world where it's man versus machines. This video dives in to the details of what a tech utopia would look like. What if our communicators were JUST for communication? What if our devices were tools to help us rather than neverending distraction machines?

The optimistic view of the future represented by TNG was really refreshing this last year and a half. It was nice to have a show to watch that was just about a team that worked together to solve problems and where everyone was good at what they did

It was a really helpful thing to watch. People respecting each other, working together, talking through their disagreements. I mean, the video calls where no one has the mic on mute are easy to joke about but it's really a small part of the picture.
At my second corporate job one of my coworkers, who has a couple of decades on me, joked "I was SURE all of us'd be in Starfleet by now."

I hope we are going in to a star trek direction for the future of humanity and not terminator haha

I hope so too. At least there are varying degrees of dystopia? It's not all Skynet and explosions sometimes it's virtual reality is the only habitable reality.

Despite being a huge SFF fan, I never watched much Star Trek. I think you've just decided my next watch for me. :) Keep up the good work!

One of the highest compliments a critic can get is: this decided a next watch, so thank you! My personal recommendation if you've never watched much Star Trek is to start withTNG Season 2, Episode 9. It's a great introduction to some of my favorite characters. It's also a very human, very emotionally powerful story.

As a child/ teenager I was a huge sci-fi fan and always dreamed about the future and new possibilities that technology could bring. But when smartphones (and everything that comes with them) became available, I could never really enjoy them, nor could I enjoy the new technology of the last few years. I never really understood why, but seeing your video now made me see the difference between Star Trek communicators and my cell phone, and the way you made your point is very clear. Great content!

Thank you! It feels to me like the few people I know who had an experience like yours - that they didn't really enjoy phones or social media at first - were way ahead of the game. Learning to have a healthier relationship with technology (which is still very much an ongoing process for me) has been a long series of realizations that "oh my, so much time has evaporated. This is maybe not good?"

Ay keep going man you can get really far, when I saw you only had 200+ subs I was shocked. Your videos are well edited and inspire me to make commentary vids too. You got potential man believe that

Wow thank you! That's really the highest compliment you can get as someone who makes things - that something you made helped inspire someone else. Thanks again :)

The "video conference" joke made me laugh so much I had to stop the video. Sending this to all my Trekkie friends!

Even people in life-threatening jeopardy have their mics on! All of Starfleet has mastered the art of great lighting! How!? (Also thank you.)

Great Video! A lot of technology exists now because people who became scientists were inspired by the Star Trek series as children. The inventor of the MRI said he was fascinated by how the tricorder could scan someone for internal injuries in a non invasive way. Before the MRI, doctors had to do a lot of exploratory surgery which risked the patient's life before they even had a solid diagnosis.

Nicely done! I love star trek and I'm boggled by people who prefer star wars!

Thank you! My favorite episodes of Star Trek take the time to contemplate complex ideas - where's the line between life and artificial intelligence, what does justice really mean, how do you respect the differences in other (in this case alien) cultures. I like Star Wars but it doesn't have my heart in the same way. Also, the new Star Wars movies boggled me.

Ironically, we had the "which is the best blockbuster Science Fiction francise?" conversation this week at work. Of course Star Trek won over Star Wars... but I voted for Blade Runner, blockbuster or not.
