  • Breakups hurt. Songs can help. How many songs, exactly, are about breakups? I set up a little science experiment to try to find out. Join me as I analyze 500 songs to try and estimate how much of popular music deals with heartbreak. This video essay will try to answer this mystery: why are so many songs about breakups?

    Thank you for another great video that makes me emotional in a good way

      thank you for watching! "Emotional in a good way" is how I'd describe how I feel after listening to a good breakup song. Or watching a video essay I particularly like. or watching a particularly poignant cat video, actually - anyway it's very nice to read this comment, so thank you :)

    Staring at a spreadsheet is the #3 reason to contemplate life choices (bested only by writing a breakup song and hot sauce).

    • @maevemonroe
      @maevemonroe  2 роки тому

      Oh my goodness, I have done all three of these things. Written an impressively bad breakup song, made a bet involving hot sauce (I won though - does that make it better or worse?), and stared at many spreadsheets. Time to contemplate my life choices in triplicate?

      @@transsexual_computer_faery Algo scares the heck out of me! I tried to learn a little bit about the youtube algorithm because why not. It Did Not Go Well.
      the advice Algorithm Experts give is basically: do the opposite of how I do. post weekly! (but it takes some video-makers a long time to edit stuff?) find your niche! (but... what if you like lots of niches?) MAXIMIZE TRENDING TOPICS (what is this i don't even?)

      @@quebaixo aww thank you! really glad the conclusion worked. I feel kind of awkward sometimes that my style as a writer/video maker seems to get personal sometimes! never sure if it's oversharing or unhelpful.
      but the way I think of it is this: I only publish a video if I feel like the topic is interesting or important. I can't say, broadly "here, viewer I may not know: here is the definitive TRUTH! about the whole topic! it definitely applies to YOU!" so, the most honest thing to do seems to be to explain why the idea is important to me. and then, I hope, that invites anyone listening to decide what they think about the topic for themselves on a personal level too.

      Oh dang. Shortly after a breakup is a tough place to be. I never know whether the right thing to say is "I'm sorry you're going through that" or just "Yeah. Damn." For me, one time, a very comforting thought from someone I didn't know very well was this: "there it is, but I hope tomorrow's a good day." So:
      I hope tomorrow's a good day.

    There's a lot of musicals about breakups.

    • @maevemonroe
      @maevemonroe  2 роки тому

      Very true. I've been writing, editing, then deleting a script about a breakup-related musical for months. (Spoilers ahead because I can't explain why without spoiling the plot? Musical is a couple years old.)
      Okay spoiler time now for: Waitress! One of my favorite things about Waitress is that it sets up the common romantic trope of having a bad relationship and a "good" relationship. The "good" relationship isn't actually all that great, but the romantic comedies I grew up with would show the main character leaving and living happily ever after with the Character Who's A Better Option. Waitress doesn't. The working title of the script for that video was "When Being Single Is the Happy Ending" but (as I often do with videos) I still haven't gotten that script to a place where I think the thesis makes sense.

      @@maevemonroe The Last Five Years and 36 Questions does that too - the Last Five being my favorite of the two because of its unflinching brutality and dread coated in, "Lady stuck in a job she hates gets dumped by her boyfriend, twice, and the musical starts off with that before going backward to her idealistic first date juxtaposed with the boyfriend's current mistress."
      36 on the other hand does the "two people find out they're just not right for each other," thing through 36 written questions.
