Tiktok Beauty, Instagram Reality: Social Media's Perfect Face

- Опубліковано 7 лип 2021
- Tiktok, Instagram and social media have created an impossible new standard of beauty. This video essay examines how selfie culture is changing how we see ourselves. I explore the algorithms that Tiktok uses to calculate attractiveness and review psychological research on the mental health impacts of social media.

I have never been on TikTok and I absolutely cannot look at Instagram anymore as it’s riddled with TikTok content. But the worse part is the horribly impossible beautiful faces that do not exist in real life. I feel like I’m living in a Peter Hamilton sci fi world. It’s horribly scary.
What about the fact that the “average face” on social media is edited, therefore making “average” progressively more unattainable
Really well done video as always. And of COURSE you’re a photoshop/design person because your thumbnails are so perfect.
I just recently learned about face tuning and it kind of blew my mind that that was a thing. There’s so much insincerity in posting such an altered image, but it sounds like social media rewards that. Dark stuff.
Thank you! Facetuning is indeed a thing and it seems to be becoming more and more popular. I wasn't able to dig up a precise percent of how many influencers use it, but I kept hearing the estimate of "yeah, it's basically all of them." There are even tutorials on exactly how much natural skin texture to leave in when Facetuning to create a "believably natural" effect.
Disappointed to see the number of views and likes. This was really good and stylistic content.
I'm about to speedrun this whole channel. Your topics and the quality is simply amazing, thank you for talking about such topics. I cannot wait for your channel to blow up, I believe in you! keep up the good work.
Just found your videos from your recent post on reddit. I’m sorry that I found you under a bad circumstance. But I am very grateful I found your incredible videos and your great thought processes!
Hi and thank you! I posted that subway video from my main account because I thought using a throwaway might mean people wouldn't see it. I wanted folks to know that that kind of thing still happens in 2021.
Thank you for watching the video essay, I would much rather share thought processes with the internet than scary subway incidents!
Something like this happens with makeup girls/women start to hate their natural look :) because makeup makes them much prettier and there is no way back.
Great video! Thank you so much ❤
This is a really good video essay
Excellent video on an important topic. Thank you.
Thank you! I was fascinated (and scared) the more I read about beauty algorithms. I found a lot of interesting things pursuing this particular research rabbit hole so I thought UA-cam was a good place to share what I learned.
Excellent video. Insightful, articulate and very well done.
Thank you! My goal was to talk about beauty algorithms in a way that would, hopefully, both summarize how they work and take a look at how much power social media can have in shaping how we see ourselves.
thank you so much for sharing this beautiful video
Thank you for watching! I try to do thorough research and then make the video reasonably interesting to look at, so thanks! :)
bro, no one changed our ideals of beauty, we were just able to get closer to them => standards rose
90% wow
As scary as it is to not be able to trust any images I see online, and assume they are all fake and edited, it must be even scarier to live in a world where you feel so pressured into fitting into the most recent idea of beauty that you feel compelled to edit your own face and image.
It certainly is. Reading articles and studies for this video, I found quotes from plastic surgeons who reported increasing numbers of people who wanted to get cosmetic procedures done to look more like their filtered or edited selves.
That idea, I think, deserves more discussion and more research. I didn't wind up talking about it in this video because it feels like it deserves a whole separate piece -- if I were going to talk about it, I wanted to make sure the topic had enough time to be thorough and respectful. It seems frightening to me to undergo a surgery to look like an image produced on Instagram or Snapchat, but we seem to be deep in a culture where some people truly feel that that is what is beautiful or even just "good enough."
Tip: if you show your face on thumbnails , hope your videos greater views.. what I 🤔
It was just a suggestion !
I've noticed that quite a few channels do that - especially larger channels who I imagine have audiences that instantly recognize them!
Brava
Thank you very much! :)
Really appreciated this video and happy to be your 100th subscriber - congrats for hitting your first 100!!! I loved everything about this video - how you talked about bias in algorithms, how our concept of beauty is both incredibly artificial and also makes us all look the same and average, and how the people in power are actually trying to tell us "you're disgusting" so we'll buy more things. I'm really looking forward to more of your videos! If you'd like to do a collab let me know and DM me on IG at Giulia Holden. I'm creating a group of small, thoughtful UA-camrs to make videos together, and would love for you to be a part of the group if you'd like.
Hi and thank you! That sounds like an amazing group and I'd love to be a part of it. I have been meaning to make an Instagram account and I'll DM you when I finally check that item off my to-do list. Learning to make UA-cam videos has been an interesting journey so far and it would be great to talk about it with other small channels trying to make thoughtful content. :)
If it’s easier my email is giuliaholden@gmail.com. You are super talented and your videos are so thoughtful, I’d love to hear about how your journey has been so far and exchange notes/be on the journey together. :)
