I recently finally found mbu puffer at a store near me and was able to get him practically free thanks to bringing my neolamprologus multifasciatus and some polar convict parrot. I’ve been breeding them for year alone with growing plants and breeding Amano and cherry shrimp … and I’ll come by the FS and trade off for what I need … all thanks to videos Cory made years ago in his “for profit” series’… I’m so grateful Cory continues to add on and do what he does to teach more and help people fundamentally understand or little slices of nature we treasure …. Thanks for keeping up and putting up with us through the years !!
I haven’t yet gotten the motivation to try to run business Fishroom but I already set but my green house just haven’t gotten to fully committing… I tried it for a few months but it’s a lot of work dean and Cory just can’t stress enough and I agree
@johnjrkean7008 yea it was really funny when I had some babies but it’s not yet produced enough to trade off I breed nerites In same tank so I think they out compete for calcium but it’s a good feeling finally being able get some going
This is definitely the most realistic breeding for "profit" video I have come across to date. Many forget to add in all of the actual experiences it takes to have stable and reliable production of fish, plants, etc. Thanks for sharing 😊
I’ve watched this like 3 times now. I think I’m ready to dive into a few small breeding projects next month and see if I can truly make this work. Never really saw myself trying to make my hobby turn a profit but if I spend as much time looking at this stuff I might as well try and get my feet wet. Thanks for always lending helpful videos
I'm currently building out two plant pot propagation tank. In my busiest I'm at about 500 a month right now it's slow. But that puts me in build, build, build mode. You guys motivate me so much.💪💪💪
I have one Panda Corydoras that plays between 29 - 41 eggs per spawn(4 times in the past 33 days)...! I was always told 7 eggs per spawn, but I'm blowing that outta the water in this past month... I'm gonna keep testing this... I have just put another single female in a separate ten-gallon with a pack of males in order to see if my female panda is a fluke, or not... Thanks for sharing...! Keep up y'alls awesomeness and go enjoy some nature today...! Also, don't forget to compliment someone today, it just may change their day...!
I watch nearly every Coop video, really enjoying members section. But I REALLY enjoy videos like this that discuss business peeks behind the scenes & logistics.
Thank you for this video Cory. I'm interested in breeding fish on a small scale and you made so many great points on how to sell, what to sell and even touched on tax write offs. Invaluable info.
This was an awesome video full of great information! Thanks for mentioning local clubs, which can be a great addition to a side hustle as well as an opportunity to pick up species to breed for a reasonable price. I hope one day you'll consider a video like this about the benefits of local clubs. Why theyre important, what to expect at club meetings, how to get involved, etc.
This video is the perfect for what im doing, im a bar manager and i make a heathy wage, i breed ricefish, bristlenose and cherry shrimp and i love it! All of these are part of my hobby, im from the uk and energy prices are crazy so everything i breed needs to be either sub tropical or just low temp. right now but i make about £200 each month, this is not a business or even close to a living but on top of my actual wage is the difference between living comfortably and being skint before payday. What im trying to explain is breeding fish does not need to be your business, it can be your holiday fund, or a chunk of your rent or whatever you need it to be Id be doing this as a hobby whether it paid or not so it’s great if you can make a few quid on it. Just enjoy what you’re doing and if you can make a few quid then thats such a plus
The most important thing is to have an awesome product, the rest will follow! I would advise to have a business card. Instead of having to write your phone number or web address down on a scrap of paper, a business card with a qr code to your website is a pretty cool touch! An easy to follow and clear website with photo's and video's of your fish and or plants makes sense too. Keep it simple and keep it fun and don't forget your own logo, for everyone to know! GoodVibes
In my opinion, business cards just get lost. Get contact info and send actual fish list, with the information. We get business cards every day, they just land in a giant stack that we feel bad to throw away but don't use typically.
Speaking my language! When I started watching your channel a few years ago, I had dreams of breeding my own catfish in drums so I could have fish frys for free... now I'm starting on my first neocardinia breeding tanks. The tanks and support systems are setup and now I need to find my first population in the next few weeks. Hoping to stem that into Cory's, great tip on the pandas I did notice the couple of times they spawned I only got half a dozen each time.
I've been selling tropical fish and aquatic plants for 4-5 years now in Sarasota, Florida... I haven't spent any actual money at either of my local fish stores in a few years...! I generally leave those shops with either more money, or a load of 'free' products...!!! I make more consistent money from my plants, but I've gotten pretty good at timing/ triggering my Corydoras and bushynose... I primarily breed Corydoras (albino, emerald, panda, and paleatis currently), Bushynose plecos(Black, albino, & red) and a lot of different guppies strains(feeders also)... Platys and mollies are also raised here and some random cichlids... Bolivian rams are my favorites, but have only had one span so far... I made WAY too many electric blue acara's and my Honduran blue points just laid eggs...! Sell what go into every tank, Corydoras and plecos was my theory...!
On the last tip...I'm finding I'm almost becoming more profitable selling my live food cultures and plants than my fish! 😅 Money is money, I'm not complaining!
I've definitely sold a ton of food cultures also. I find that it's decent seller but pretty hard to scale more and more. Not as many people get excited for a food culture. But a good looking fish helps you gain more customers.
In my earlier years in CT I was breeding 3 different strains of fancy guppies and same with angelfish. I had 3 LFS's that would buy all I could produce. Because they were locally breed by a hobbyist and high quality they would pay me at least half of what they sell for. Now here in NH, by not trying, I ended up with 2 pairs of angels and 3 pairs of guppies breeding. I talked to 3 different pet stores and they wanted the fry raised to a certain size and would only pay what they claim they pay the wholesaler, angels = $1.25 each and guppies $1.00 a pair. It would cost me way more to feed and raise them than I could recoup. So I sold or gave them away to friends and family.
Developing a relationship helps. I'm not sure about the quality of the fish as I pay more for both of those things wholesale wise myself. Maybe regionally they have someone breeding en mass and supplying the wholesaler.
I recently saw some videos on how to get rich with fish or shrimp. Like just put up a tank, habe the critters multiply and sell them for hundreds and thousands each, so basically you get thousands, tens of thousands, ... Of basically passive income. But it is first of all running a business like any other business and on top of that it's a livestock business with all specifics that apply to that. There is no get rich quick. Thanks for how you put all this together.
Locally bred fish are always more valuable than imported and locally bred fish from wholesalers because the fish are coming directly from the breeder. Much less stress on the fish and survival rate is always much higher than fish which go through shipping.
Thanks...really helpful. Have had my Hillstream loaches take over my 29g community. Wasn't something I worked at...just happened. Actually was going to set up a 20L as a grow out tank, but decided to leave the loaches in the 29g. It's 8yrs old well established, lots of food for the babies. Instead setting up a 40 breeder, and going to move my angel and other fish to the new tank. The LFS that I bought the original hillstreams from wants to buy my loaches. Think I've got a good 30x hillstreams now (from 4), and new babies showing up all the time. They do take a while to grow out. about a year, so not something I can turn into income, but it should help offset my hobby costs. Not sure how much they will offer but anything will help.
I am actually beginning to make my own small small breeding project in my basement xD, got a few plastic tubs and after setting em all up with filters heaters nd all that I got different guppy varieties wich can go for a pretty penny each. I have koi's, Platinum's, Red tail dumbo's, and dumbo mosaics. Thought i'd beggin with guppies since they're the most easy to keep and breed and perhaps in the future I'll move on to more difficult fish to breed :D
Where i live. There is only one pet store in a 2 hour area. So shipping is all can really do. And with the weather i only feel comfortable to ship in a small window. And that makes it hard to turn profits
That's why my peppermint and blue phantom are test runs while my other bristlenose are doing their thing. I do hope to get some Zebras to breed ( I will sell them at a more affordable price)
I'd love to start breeding and cultivating, but that would require an actual storefront or a cheap commercial space. Apartment living sucks sometimes... and I checked with the local fish guys here and they said they can't legally buy so that would just leave Facebook or word of mouth stuff.
I’m 18 years old and I have 5 10 gallon tanks and 1 5 gallon (planning on getting more in the future to breed fish and more shrimp) In 1 tank I have Bloody Mary neos shrimp and in another I have yellow goldenback/orange neos. The 4 other 10 gallons I plan on breeding easier more common caridina shrimp (Crystal blacks Crystal reds blue bolts etc) Im also growing multiple species of aquatic plants emersed. Hoping I can make some money and have this hobby take off as a profitable side hustle! It’s something I love to do (im running this business with my friend as he has breeding shrimp tanks too) Im taking an entrepreneurship class in college as well as classes for a full time job in health care eventually It’s my dream to be able to work full time in this hobby. You inspire me and I’m hoping I can get to your level of success and knowledge one day. Thank you Cory!!
Basically it sounds like it is not worth it. I sell fish and plants at the same price as the store or more, but my fish and plants are bigger healthier and established for the area. Even by doing this i make very little. The couple of stores i do sell to is at 50% of their price. I do give them some fish/plants free on occasion and i think they appreciate it. Usually i just want trades because i really want the store to succeed. I follow up with them to make sure they sell the fish fast and they always do. Rare fish that sell fast everybody wins.
Very true advice on taxes but no one with a side hustle is claiming the $1000 per month they make. Especially with home office tax deductions that can be $16,000+ a year in tax credit towards your business. Albeit PayPal goods & services requires a tax form if you make too much per month. (600)
I live south of you in Kent, I am planning on making a dwarf Cichlid tank here in the future, i would love to know how well that would be for a breeding start up?
For store credit, I first find out how many the store wants and give them a price and then they will offer store credit over money. I say store credit is fine however I only take store credit for half of a full order and the store credit value given to me is double what they would have given in cash.
i been struggling with egg scatterers, specifically tetras, getting big spawns or enough eggs hatching or even getting them to spawn at all to be able to have enough to sell, working on it while i breed and sell easier fish for me
Unfortunately my biggest obstacle seems to be location. We only have big box stores and salt water. Maybe one local but I haven't found them online and they would be a bit of a trip. Also at least 3 hours to the nearest swap.
Hey Cory, Great content as usual...I was wondering what is the address of your new place in Lexington, KY as I live an hour from there....I would be a steady customer ! Thanks. Aquatic Cove...
The biggest mistake is not breeding what sells they should be over ninety percent of your output if you can bred zebra pleco great. But outlays, time, costs and risks are massive losing a couple of shipments can easily wipe you out same with discus even Gabe at Watley Discus has other revenue streams to back up his business model.
Do not breed albino corydoras, if you do not have space for them 😂 I did that... Buy a little more expensive - mid-level prices and breed them cheap. Find a fish that suits the climate you are living in so you do not have to think about heat/cooling prices. Find your food in nature if you have the opportunity.
They probably see it as fish carry disease. Also theres usually good reasons, just doesn't always make sense. You could bring me 30 home bred cardinal tetras, and I'd say no thanks. I need 100+ at a time for quarantine to make sense. I also have 2-3 tanks of cardinal tetras at all times and yours would be a 4th. And I wouldn't cross contaminate them for several weeks. So in the instance of say 30 fish, it would actually cost me more money to just house/treat them then not getting them at all when opportunity cost is much higher because I needed to put 100 chili rasboras there for quarantine.
18:39 Things are so different in Canada. A 20 long is $90-120 for JUST the tank. Now double, triple, or quadruple the price of every other item you need.
I kinda wish there was a somewhat expert-channel that did more outdoor-stock-ponds from 100-625 gallons in size. I don't want fish inside but if I had a water-flower & some fancy minnows or something more interesting then I might enter the fun.
I disagree, doing it as a side hustle. More labor than money. You need lots of space for breeding. You have your main tank for a species, breeding and an upbringing tank and also quarantine tanks. Multiple this with 20-30 kinds of fishes, otherwise buyers won't take you serious, and you know where this is heading. The main species, you can find in any pet shop, you won't sell for enough money anyway which could satisfy your needs. Selling to a wholesaler is also a mood point. They pay you usually a 1/3 of the end customer price.
I've bred them before. In my opinion easy to breed, but also easy to saturate a market. As well as have other breeders move in on it. So you might be able to make some good money, but be aware it can dry up pretty quickly and diversify more than just the axolotls for safety of income. I wouldn't quit my day job just on axolotls.
Hard to say, depends on size, quality etc. How fast are they selling them? Are yours lyre tail or hi fin? When I had a good red swordtail breeder 15 years ago, we paid $2 for males showing swords and $1 for females as an example.
I have tuxedo and German blacks mostly size with swords so about 2" they want them , it's hard cause they cost more than a $1 for food per fish, hmm sounds like I should ask for more Ty Cory
my local store doesnt even pay for livebearers but $1 seems fair for what they are selling it for based on the few places i take my fish if i am not selling them myself, i sell my swordtails for $1-5, $1 for culls and early batches of a new line or a new breeder
That's beyond the scope of what I'll teach. But in general, have good credit and something of value to secure the loan. This business is something people can usually start without a loan compared to say a retail store.
I'm not sure that would be unavoidable. We have over 1000 videos. This comment is made before you could watch the video, but I do say things have changed over the years and this is what I'd be doing a bit differently. Plus I also address the previous series was more about a hobby and a bit of profit. This is more directed at a literally business instead of your job at some point which people have been able to do. I'd say something like, use what you need, leave what you don't is a thing here. If it's not interesting, move on. There's plenty of people who feel the same way about any of the videos we do. Fish room tours, farm tours, china videos, peru videos, unboxing, top 5 videos etc. All of them have been done. Each group has people who love em and people who would rather pass. Either way, I appreciate you sticking around long enough to see possible repeats on subjects :)
Whether it's this subject or something else, there are always people just coming into the hobby - or considering it - who haven't come across that information yet. Not to mention, things change. There may be updates on or additional information about previously covered subjects, new products available that pertain to that subject, or perspectives that may have changed since the prior video. Content creators continue to learn, too, and it's great when they pass that along.
I did videos probably 5 years ago when I discovered them in the Japanese stores. Then they were in some store tours of my store and unboxing videos. I was ahead of my time and there wasn't much of a market for them. But seeing them in person in Japan, they are like the perfect fish. Cool water, lots of color, plant tank friendly etc.
*Watch the "Breeding Fish for Profit" series:* ua-cam.com/play/PLNM4mDAXGxWwoL7Cnyic_DAnaE7PHBtIP.html
Cory is one of the few UA-camrs who has made a breeding fish for profit video and actually has a sound business sense and background. Kudos 🎉
U breed Amanos?? Not a easy thing to do congrats
@johnjrkean7008 yea it was really funny when I had some babies but it’s not yet produced enough to trade off I breed nerites In same tank so I think they out compete for calcium but it’s a good feeling finally being able get some going
@ozievazquez4023 Are the nerites you breed a Theodoxus species? If not, how do you keep them alive through the larval stage?
This is definitely the most realistic breeding for "profit" video I have come across to date. Many forget to add in all of the actual experiences it takes to have stable and reliable production of fish, plants, etc. Thanks for sharing 😊

Corey dropping invaluable knowledge. Really appreciate these videos!
I watch nearly every Coop video, really enjoying members section. But I REALLY enjoy videos like this that discuss business peeks behind the scenes & logistics.
The original series played and had a huge impact on my plans for an aquatic side hustle ❤ thanks for sharing those thoughts back then and now .
Thanks Cory! I don't do this as a business, but I love to apply these principals to other businesses.
Thank you for this video Cory. I'm interested in breeding fish on a small scale and you made so many great points on how to sell, what to sell and even touched on tax write offs. Invaluable info.
This is a book/class. Thanks for doing this.
Thanks Cory for insights of this business!!
Cory this is an amazingly informative video! Thank you!we are all blessed that you shared all this knowledge with us!❤

fascinating essay on the reality behind the aquarium glass. Thank you!

I'm tempted to breed female dwarf gouramis simply because they are so hard to find lately. Also dwarf gouramis are very nice.

i have been breeding cpds for years now and i have approach lfs a few times but they never had any interest so i just got bigger tanks :D
This information has helped solidify a plan I've already been working on! Thank you so much for the insight and invaluable knowledge.

45:00 I actually transfer the fish into the tanks at the shop myself that way I know they make it into the tank fine and don't get shocked.

Thanks...really helpful. Have had my Hillstream loaches take over my 29g community. Wasn't something I worked at...just happened. Actually was going to set up a 20L as a grow out tank, but decided to leave the loaches in the 29g. It's 8yrs old well established, lots of food for the babies. i actually just bought a pet store display case for my live bearers so i could breed more
Yes! Needed a video like this
Wish there was a market for my Foerschi bettas...
I would love a few
Thanks for reminding me of the obvious (glueing Java Fern to a rock) I just did 5 and am going to see if they grow as fast as you mentioned.
That's why my peppermint and blue phantom are test runs while my other bristlenose are doing their thing. I do hope to get some Zebras to breed ( I will sell them at a more affordable price)
Maybe it's regional, but stores in my area will not but from hobbyists. Seems like a mistake but it's reality
Seems like an opportunity for someone to break that mold and profit from it. Assuming the local quality is good, it will save them time and money.
Great video,Very informative
.🎉
I love free game. Thank you!
Great video.
Hey can you do an update of how your bettas are doing in the store?
How much would you recommend starting with to make a decent amount of profit? How many tanks & what size would you go with?
I'd start with a tank or two. Learn what's working before scaling.
Hey it's the legendary shirt
I'd love to start breeding and cultivating, but that would require an actual storefront or a cheap commercial space. Apartment living sucks sometimes... and I checked with the local fish guys here and they said they can't legally buy so that would just leave Facebook or word of mouth stuff.
Perfect I love a good side hustle
My 1 pair of panda corys spawned 16 a couple days ago. :)
I’m 18 years old and I have 5 10 gallon tanks and 1 5 gallon (planning on getting more in the future to breed fish and more shrimp)
In 1 tank I have Bloody Mary neos shrimp and in another I have yellow goldenback/orange neos. The 4 other 10 gallons I plan on breeding easier more common caridina shrimp (Crystal blacks Crystal reds blue bolts etc)
Im also growing multiple species of aquatic plants emersed.
Hoping I can make some money and have this hobby take off as a profitable side hustle! It’s something I love to do (im running this business with my friend as he has breeding shrimp tanks too)
Im taking an entrepreneurship class in college as well as classes for a full time job in health care eventually
It’s my dream to be able to work full time in this hobby. You inspire me and I’m hoping I can get to your level of success and knowledge one day. Thank you Cory!!

I plan on making the tank because I love Apistos, this is more of a "hey if they start breeding, can i sell them" situation.
So start a fish shipping business? lol kidding! Thanks for sharing thoughts and knowledge!
I put up my comment a few mins before Cory made it 🤦♂️
For store credit, I first find out how many the store wants and give them a price and then they will offer store credit over money. I say store credit is fine however I only take store credit for half of a full order and the store credit value given to me is double what they would have given in cash.

Hey Cory, Great content as usual...I was wondering what is the address of your new place in Lexington, KY as I live an hour from there....I would be a steady customer ! Thanks. Aquatic Cove...
800 Enterprise Drive in Lexington KY. But we aren't open to the public. It's only a warehouse we ship out of, for a few reasons.
@@AquariumCoop I live half an hour south of Lexington, so I guess that means shipping should be pretty quick for me!
It takes -> 4
It’s illegal in Colorado for stores to buy from hobbyists unless they have a $500/year license…
You read my mind, I was just thinking about turning it, into a business.
Why did aquarium co op move from aqua huna to Dan's Fish?
The biggest mistake is not breeding what sells they should be over ninety percent of your output if you can bred zebra pleco great. But outlays, time, costs and risks are massive losing a couple of shipments can easily wipe you out same with discus even Gabe at Watley Discus has other revenue streams to back up his business model.
A decent, not-name-brand commercial lawn mower starts at $12,000...!!!
“Side hussle”
Do not breed albino corydoras, if you do not have space for them 😂
I did that...
Buy a little more expensive - mid-level prices and breed them cheap.
Find a fish that suits the climate you are living in so you do not have to think about heat/cooling prices.
Find your food in nature if you have the opportunity.
In Australia you need to be a registered breeder, that’s not the case in the US?
My LFS won't accept fish. They gladly take my plants, whatever sense that makes.
I've got a pond chock full of Marigold Swordtails and Silver High Fin Lyretail Mollies...somebody help lol
What are y’all’s thoughts on axolotls?
I've bred them before. In my opinion easy to breed, but also easy to saturate a market. As well as have other breeders move in on it. So you might be able to make some good money, but be aware it can dry up pretty quickly and diversify more than just the axolotls for safety of income. I wouldn't quit my day job just on axolotls.
I dream of Genie...
I breed swordtails and sell to local shop but it hardly pays much at $1 a fish, should I push for a higher price they sell em for $5
Hard to say, depends on size, quality etc.
They take as many as I can give they sell quick
my local store doesnt even pay for livebearers but $1 seems fair for what they are selling it for based on the few places i take my fish if i am not selling them myself, i sell my swordtails for $1-5, $1 for culls and early batches of a new line or a new breeder
How do you get a bank loan or investor
That's beyond the scope of what I'll teach. But in general, have good credit and something of value to secure the loan. This business is something people can usually start without a loan compared to say a retail store.
Just made my first trade hade a lot of endlers trading for 3 scarlet badiss
They only will take your fish for free.
@@davejones7202 depends on the store and your relationship with the store
😂people have no idea how complicated it this
And margins are awful
Don’t do it
Nobody [store) is interested in buying fish in my area
My dream is not to sell fish. LOL
Is it just me or does all of the content coming out of this channel just seem like re made videos anymore?
@@AquariumCoopHave you done a video on Medaka Rice Fish?
Whether it's this subject or something else, there are always people just coming into the hobby - or considering it - who haven't come across that information yet. Not to mention, things change. There may be updates on or additional information about previously covered subjects, new products available that pertain to that subject, or perspectives that may have changed since the prior video. Content creators continue to learn, too, and it's great when they pass that along.
Definitely you; do you listen. Cory is updating current price shift in: shipping, importing, materials and goods.
