      🙌🏻 caffeine has a lot of great brain benefits, but the trick is to wait about 90 minutes 2 hours before having your coffee in the morning. 🤦🏻‍♀️ It doesn’t shorten your life, most studies show it will actually extend your life and help you stay healthier for longer

      @@junkmalme Coffee and caffeinated teas are specifically named in our law of health called the Word of Wisdom. But it also says, “anything harmful that people purposefully take into their bodies is not in harmony with the Word of Wisdom”and goes on to recommend things we should try to eat to maintain our good health, such as vegetables, fruits, and grains. Caffeine is harmful because it can be an addictive substance to many. We try to avoid being beholden to addictions so that we can exercise our free agency untethered to substances. This also means that we should try to avoid excess in other areas of our lives, such as avoiding too much sugar and yes, chocolate, which also contains caffeine. It doesn’t mean we can’t have chocolate or caffeinated drinks from time to time. We just need to be careful for the sake of our health.

    This rule used to confuse me so much. I had a friend in middle school who asked for a sip of my drink after my mom brought me lunch. Taking a sip she immediately spat it out (it was sweet tea) and said “sorry I can’t have tea because it has caffeine” and then the kicker “I thought it was Coke” (which contains caffeine). Apparently in their Mormon family instead of having coffee or tea to wake up they would drink coke or Pepsi or Dr Pepper and I’m just like ??? That’s still caffeine

      So this is actually a common misconception. It’s not about the caffeine. It never was it was just made to be like that. It’s more about the addictive aspect of coffee which is usually attributed to the caffeine (coffee has significantly more caffeine than sodas which is why it’s more recognized as addictive and that’s why we see it as bad; however any addiction to soda or caffeine pills or whatever is not encouraged at all either) I hope this helps a little bit!

      The tannins(a yellowish or brownish bitter-tasting organic substance present in some galls, barks, and other plant tissues, consisting of derivatives of gallic acid, used in leather production and ink manufacture) in tea are also not healthy for your body. I grew up LDS and the reasoning I heard was that caffeine is a drug and can cause addiction. Addiction = bad. But when I mentioned that chocolate, fat and sugar can be addicting too I just got told "it's not the same" without further elaboration. Also coffee in reasonable amounts is fine for the general population. But everyone should decide for themselves if it's right for them. I LOVE coffee but coffee doesn't love me. It makes me sick and stressed. I'm probably a slow caffeine metabolizer.
    Anyway, what I hated about the caffeine dogma was how many LDS members treat caffeine the same as cigarettes, alcohol, and even hard drugs like heroin. I witnessed one member talk about how their friend quit hard drugs by replacing it with things like caffeine, and instead of praising their friend for getting clean they criticized them for "trading one addiction for another." I was thinking, "are you effing kidding me?"

    • @spindlerfamily6425
      @spindlerfamily6425 Рік тому +5

      THIS! The point I think is addiction. What they failed to explain is that ANYTHING GOOD CAN BECOME DETRIMENTAL AS AN ADDICTION! CHOCOLATE CAN BE AN ADDICTION! CHOCOLATE CAN BE BAD FOR YOU! However, your health choices are up to you and the Lord. If the Lord says you are getting too sucked into this said thing then it's time to take a break. Caffeine just happens to be very addictive, so it's more general. Just like technically drugs are good, unless you are addicted to them.

    • @tiarezavaleta8850
      @tiarezavaleta8850 Рік тому +3

      Well, I think the friend should seek a therapist to help him with the addictive behavio because he can relapse into hard drugs. However there is not comparison between the damage of hard drugs to the body and the minor damage of coffee in large amounts. Coffee can be even beneficial to your heath in reasonable doses.

    • @BanjoBitty
      @BanjoBitty Рік тому +4

      @@tiarezavaleta8850 Absolutely. I don't know the full story about the friend. They might have gone to therapy but those details were left out. But replacement behavior does significantly improve the ability to quit an addiction. And yeah, caffeine can have certain health benefits for certain people. Caffeine metabolization speed plays a role here and it's determined by genes. I'm in the camp of people who're better off without it, but many people are fine with it.

    My family lived in Utah in the early 2000s (we’re Catholic) and the no coffee thing baffled my mom to no end (she drinks 1-2 cups of black coffee a day). When she asked about it most people gave her the logic of “oh, we’re not supposed to drink caffeine.” However, she would notice that they’d drink sodas like Pepsi and ask why the sodas, and their answer was “oh, caffeine doesn’t work if the drink is cold.”
    So my mother, with it being the early 2000s so search engines weren’t the best and her being the petty queen she is, called Dr Zorba’s show on NPR AND GOT SELECTED TO GO ON THE AIR to ask if this was true (it of course wasn’t). I can see how people who weren’t born into the church or anything could view it as strange. I view it as second nature but like you do you. Your opinion is your own so long as you’re respectful of others, and like also my dads family are all member and they drink tea. I don’t because my mom doesn’t. So I promise it’s not a thing of being a member or not. I have had tea before, just not a lot

There are some people (I don’t want to say a lot or a few bc it’ll come off wrong) that have had bad experiences with the church. The way I see it, nobody is perfect. But the church doesn’t preach anything like murder or judge one another. In fact the prophet said quite the opposite that we can’t judge because we don’t know. If I seem judgey Im tired and don’t function well that way. I do recommend looking into the church as an adult or whatever age you are, and try to get some new perspective because in my experience bad people are everywhere. Bad experiences are everywhere. But there’s also a lot of good everywhere. If you look in on it now with fresh eyes, you may rewrite your bad experience and you may have a different opinion. I ofc can’t tell you what to do and it’s your choice but that is what I recommend

    I’m a member and a Sunday school teacher. I always clarify to my classes that the word of wisdom is not about health. It’s about obedience and separating yourself from the world and that by obeying you will receive health benefits. Members often try to come up with health reasons why it prohibits certain things. But they shouldn’t. Giving worldly answers to explain spiritual laws just leads to stuff like this video. The answer is not ‘cause coffee and alcohol is bad for you’. There a lot of things that are bad for you like sugar that are not mentioned. If it was about health, let’s talk about actual health killers. The answer is God has asked you live differently then the world and if you do you will be blessed. It’s similar to the Law of Moses, circumcision and what not.
    Now you can argue that it’s silly for God or a church to have prohibitions on things for obedience sake and that’s fine but that’s the real reason. Because coffee is ‘bad for you’ is plain wrong and members who still use this excuse yo explain the Word of Wisdom are looking at this stuff the wrong way.

If you ask any rabbi why this is the immediate answer is that “god commanded us”, which is totally true, we have a full chapter in the Torah dedicated to it. But why is that a bad thing? I remember joining the church in my early twenties. And I offered a church member some coffee cake that I made and she declined. I said to her “it does not have an ounce of coffee in it!” And she still refused to take it. I made the same cake for a church potluck and just called it blueberry crumble cake. She commented on how good it was. I told her it was the same cake I had offered her months before but I just changed the name. Lol. She looked at me like “damn!”

      We offered a coffee cake at the mod pizza I worked at in Utah and usually our seasonal cakes sell like wildfire but not this one! People always looked at it like they wanted it so bad and then I’d hear them say, “Oh it’s coffee 😢”

    I always thought that putting “ex-Mormon” in video titles was an insincere way of grabbing at credibility. I don’t know his story, but lots of people do it but they left the church when they were very young but pretend to have deep knowledge. Like a child that quit school in middle school but calls himself an ex-scholar because they experienced a portion of a scholastic lifestyle.

    I left the church in my early 20s and then after life kicked me in the face( and a lot of years later) I made my way back. In that time, I did all the things we weren’t supposed to. At first these experiences made me feel ostracized, but in fact they helped me to better understand the converts and investigators looking into the church.
    However, people need to understand… it is not a commandment to not drink coffee or tea. It is not a sin, if you do so.. we have been advised not to partake because of the addictive effects of them. Which is true. I’m absolutely hooked on the iced mocha’s from Costco! Delicious 🤤… but god is not drawing the line to heaven at front door of Starbucks… while it is true (scripturally) that the lord gave commandments to people to see if they would obey, (you can start with Adam and Eve and the fruit) no where has god commanded “thou shalt not partake of teas and hot drinks, lest ye be caffeinated, and energized”…
    We need to juxtapose the teachings of god, and his wishes and teachings, with the fallacies of man, and the teachings that have been mixed in to our culture…

    I’m a member who works night shifts regularly. I did find it ridiculous that I was ok to consume large quantities of energy drinks, but it wasn’t ok to drink coffee. But pondering on this made think that what I was doing was doing wasn’t keeping “the word of wisdom”. Verse 2 says not by way of commandment or constraint. At first this section was just a suggestion. And a lot of the early members kind of just shrugged it off.
    Over time I found the caffeine I was consuming was affecting my energy levels, weight and just before I stopped I noticed that I was having heart palpitations and felt jittery all the time. So I knew it was time for me to change. It’s been 3 months of no soda or caffeine of any kind. Now I definitely have more energy and I’ve almost lost 20 pounds. I think this section is just trying to tell us to be smart and careful what we put into our bodies.

    Abinadi, Joseph Smith Jr., Jesus the Christ...
    1. All killed for what they taught
    2. All fought strongly against priestcraft (preaching the Word "for gain")
    and
    3. Ultimately it was their teaching of the Godhead, our relationship with and to God that got them all killed
    This is the doctrine that makes the "Christian" world the most upset... it isn't plural marriage, consecration, etc. no... It has been and always will be priestcraft (that "gain") and the Godhead and our relationship to it... Period...
    And when we teach fellow members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints those two things,
    1. Priestcraft is preaching for "gain"
    and
    2. The Godhead and our relationship to it
    and the membership's reaction is exactly the same as the "Christian" world... well then it is clear that we are no longer the Lord's favored peculiar people- we are as the Jews of old who would slay their own Messiah. We aren't prepared to live the higher holier laws and rejoice as we receive our King- we would scourge Him and crucify Him, laugh and mock Him.
    Time is truly running out to learn the doctrine and gain testimonies of it. And if hearing that causes you to get upset or to "fear", so you flee from it and bury it- someday soon you will be calling upon the rocks to bury you so you can flee from him.
    2 Nephi 28:8
    And **there shall also be many** [Latter-day Saints] which [now] say: Eat, drink, and be merry; nevertheless, fear God-**he will justify in committing a little sin**; yea, lie a little, take the advantage of one because of his words, dig a pit for thy neighbor; **there is no harm in this**; and do all these things, for tomorrow we die; and** if it so be that we are guilty, God will beat us with a few stripes, and at last we shall be saved in the kingdom of God.**
    Alma 35:3
    And it [will come] to pass that after **the more popular part of the [Latter-day Saints]*** [after having] consulted together concerning the words which had been preached unto them, **they [will be] angry because of the word, for it [will] destroy their craft; therefore they [will not] not hearken unto the words.
    *And then we have Alma's words to his son Corianton who's sinful behavior directly affected the ability for the Zoramites to hear the word. Do we not see this behavior today from the popular priest crafters of our day justifying a little sin.*

    Someone probably mentioned it already but it’s very similar in Jehovah’s Witnesses with blood transfusions. The scriptural reasoning is there (flimsy as all hell, but there) but witnesses would always defect to some external cultural reason why it was Good Actually before eventually just saying “it’s gods rule dont question it”.
    Just recently my sister was talking about how the only reason bloodless medicine isn’t the automatic standard is because doctors are too lazy and indoctrinated to “do their own research” and find out how much “healthier” it is. When I was waking up and my parents asked me if I would rather die or take blood, I said I would take blood to save my life if I had to and my mom started sobbing and saying “do you *WANT* to get *AIDS* ???” She didn’t mention the scripture once. It’s just so ingrained into them that their way is justified and obviously true and not dogmatic that to say otherwise makes them short-circuit.

    I grew up in the Church and am still active. I wanted to clarify that when I would ask this question, I would be told that the Lord wants us to be free of addictions. I would argue that the Lord doesn’t want us to be addicted to any substance, whether that be coffee, soda, video games, etc.
    In addition, members are still free to break this commandment, and still hold a calling, participate in Church activities, and even take the sacrament. They will be restricted from going to the temple.
    There is more history to this principle, and I’d recommend doing more research if you’re interested.
    God bless.
