Ricky, this was a wake up call for me. Your big buildboard made an even bigger one for me. You’re so right in what you say, and even though I had different reasons they are both the same. So it takes a lot of courage for you to come out and say it to the rest of the world. Great video, hope I get to still talk to ya once in awhile and spend time with you at terrificon!
Congratulations on making your dreams come true! This definitely made me think of myself and where my collecting journey is taking me. But I’m very happy for you and your new gratitude arc, I hope you are able to get the house you’ve always wanted!
Looking forward to watching this part of your journey unfold! I've had numerous 'pauses' over the years in my collecting habits and hobbies for various reasons, and they don't have to have a negative effect on them. Take a breath and spend some time enjoying what you have. I hope you manage to keep the pace of making these videos though!
I found you through other comic book UA-camrs, but I continue to enjoy you and your content because you change things up. Your ability to cover such a myriad of topics in the way that you do is entertaining, educational (at least for me, as I always learn something from your videos), and enjoyable. I really hope that you DO meet your goals, whether that's the sweet home theatre or an indoor ski resort, or one entire room that's just trampolines. As long as you continue to put out content, I'll be here to watch. Cheers, man!
I really appreciate this video and your thoughts and reasons for quitting collecting for now. I’m not in the same financial boat, but I catch myself having a “psychotic obsession with acquisition” and my wife has noticed it too. You’re inspiring me to make similar decisions. I’m grateful for your channel and I look forward to what the next year or two look like!
Fantastic! I am in complete agreement. I started collecting again years ago as connection with friends and my father-in-law and over the last year the friendships have been fantastic, but I also allowed myself to get captured by the hype of getting. I appreciate what you are doing, because what you're saying really resonates with what I am hear for God as well. I wish I could be with you all at Terrificon just for the fun of hanging out. I look forward to more of your creativity in videos to come.
You found maturity, gratitude and perspective. My first comment. This was a heartfelt and thoughtful video. Keep doing them. Sounds like you have tons of material to still read through and comment on!
Wow. What a time to subscribe Ricky.! I commend you on your wife’s financial plan. It is so hard now for most people to get ahead. The discretionary money we used to have after expenses is almost gone now. But your positive attitude and your long term approach will get you everything! Congrats!
I feel your anxiety about collecting. For years my collection was stored in closets and hidden away while we saved for a new house. Now we live in that new house and I also have a single room for all of my collectibles. My issue is that I had everything stored away for so long that I am having difficulty deciding how best display it all now. Best of luck to you.
I recently got back into collecting (thanks Whatnot) after being a Wednesday warrior for a long time. I had to stop as I was just accumulating and not enjoying. Now I'm trying to be much more selective of what I collect and try to enjoy the hobby, like by going to Terrificon. Good luck with your endeavor!
My wife and I did the exact same thing and we got our forever home 6 years ago. I didn't buy a single book for 3 years and kept myself occupied with plenty of other things in life. Looking forward to the new arc and good luck!
Very brave and introspective of you to put this out there. I have been pondering these very thoughts myself for the past several months. Unfortunately, I have become more of a purchaser/ aquirer than a reader of the comic books I have ,deviating from my original intent of reading them and cherishing the art. With my current work/life schedule I could easily go a couple of years enjoying what I currently own without picking up anything else. This has been nagging me for a while now. Why do I keep buying stuff when I could thoroughly be taking pleasure in all the unread books I have. Buyer's addiction is real. Thank you for putting this out there. I believe it's time for me to stop as well for the foreseeable future and just show gratitude and appreciation for what I already have.
Great video Ricky. I wish you well in your journey for your forever home. Comics, video games, youtube to most people are just hobbies and we shouldn't let them consume us. Do for you and your family, all hobbies will be there when you return. We should all appreciate the things we have and not obsess over the things we don't. 👊🏼
Good on you. I'm trying to find more balance in my collecting, spending less money or trying that whole "make the hobby pay for it" thing. I've got a yard sale planned soon where I'm trying to excise a nice chunk of comics that I enjoyed reading but don't necessarily need in my collection.
Good luck on this endeavor! Your videos demonstrate so much introspection and guts to share all your thoughts. Hope it’ll be a level of accountability to make it a little easier. Just curious because I also have limited space to work with, any thoughts on selling stuff that doesn’t feel like you need in your collection anymore? I’ve been hesitating on selling some of my stuff so that I can acquire other stuff that just means more to me now. This video is definitely a push for me to do so. Thanks again for the great content!
@@EvenMGon It sucks because I’ve always been of the philosophy that my comics are mine. I never bought anything on impulse, because I legitimately wanted to add everything to my permanent collection. Thats why you’ll never hear me say the words “PC” because I thought it was all PC. I know I can’t take it all with me, but that’s a level of introspection I haven’t arrived at yet. Good for you my man you are one smart sensible human being. Too many let the hobby take over their life because they need more stuff in order to solidify they have meaning by obsessing with “stuff”…
Wow the parallels! We moved away from the NH seacoast 3 years ago, except we went south. While finances and cost of living weren't the main reason, we are very much enjoying the financial liberation! From one collector to another, I wish you the best with your plan, and I can't wait to see what you eventually end up with for a new space!
I feel your pain. I moved from a house to an apartment and had to severely downsize. Comic books take up more space than they should...I currently have 7 long boxes and 8 short boxes just stacked in a pile in my bedroom - the closet and other storage space I have is already full. I also collect vinyl records and classic D&D stuff, plus I have a bunch of guitars, amps, pedals, and other music gear. My god I'm a man-child aren't I?
I have been enjoying your videos very much. Thanks for making em. It's obvious that you enjoy making them so that whatever content you come up with in the future will be very entertaining. I got about a ton of comic books I need to read. I think when we have adult salaries and we're buying things that we bought as a kid. It's very easy to overdo it. Sounds like you have a good plan. Build your home theater and read some of your comics out of your very nice collection.
Dude, your videos are so entertaining, I don't need to see the latest grail purchase! Best wishes on your big saving year for your return home! That's just great planning for you and your wife! I am running into a similar situation, with having to use my sidehack money for other things, and we are looking to do some house projects that will take much more resources. So I will be fairly lean for a while as well. If the hobby pays for itself, that's great, but otherwise I'll be cooling off for a while. Keep the awesome videos coming though!
I do not have the same over arching goal on a home down payment right now, but I have come to the same conclusion with my spending / collecting habits. Please make some update videos along the way.... "Day 85 with No Purchases" good luck with your goals!
#TheGratitudeArc !!! This video came at just the right time. My hobbies are comics, books, and gaming as well. I absolutely acquire much more than I have time to consume. Funny enough, my wife and I are doing the same. After Terrificon, we will be cutting back, using only what we already have for entertainment. We'll also be dining out less and building more of a savings. Less impulsive purchases can go a long way. Hope to see you at Terrificon!

As I have said before. I do not envy your comic logistics. Now I see you have more than one…issue. Glorious problem to have. Thanks for the content. And I wish you the greatest success in your new path! Looks like you have plenty to enjoy and a bright future ahead!

Well said! Putting the goal you share with your wife over, what easily, is an obsession is showing maturity. I look forward to the content that you will continue to produce!
I’ve also been concerned with being more appreciative of what I already have, and some of the best ways for me has been to gift people things I know they’ll love instead of profit
1st time here. Great plan, and good luck with it. I thought I'd do the same once I turned 60. I'm 61 now and still buy.... But I am buying less, collecting less, so there's some progress. I couldn't go cold turkey.
I totally understand. We all get to a comic collector point when we stop or pivot. I myself see that coming to. Need to downsize my collection myself and be thankful for what I have.
I definitely hear your sentiment in this video. Collecting sometimes can be quite addicting and then people don't really realize how quick occupies your living area. I'm currently living in in Vermont for work and I definitely hear your sentiment how people have been priced out of the market in New Hampshire. Hopefully I can meet up and say hi to you at terrificon
@@MarcSpectorComics I’d love to see you there! I’ll be making an announcement a little closer to the con of what times I’ll be walking around with giveaways so keep your eyes peeled! 🤐🤫
Thanks for sharing your epiphany, which helps others, myself included, consider taking a similar journey sooner than later in life. I also love to collect comic books and fantasy related items. However, my hobby "closet" is 95% of capacity. I feel needing to take at least 1 yr off full-time to just organize it all, but as an adult w a family & home, that's impossible. Next stop... retirement 🙄
Ricky, thanks for the VERY interesting video... Best of Luck on your future house... Looking forward to seeing your home movie set -up.. You have piled up some incredible items and you DO Have ADVENTURE # 247, so there's that. Your essay about collecting possibly becoming an addiction was fascinating & possibly psychic in R: my buying as well... You've given me food for thought, so thanks. You now have time to catch up on you videos games/movies/ time to read your comics/ Yeah I know will the lack of ability to buy a whole trash load be a concern? You shall see... I believe that your wife may be able to come up with something to eat that isn't Black beans & rice.... Best of luck with that aspect of the future as well... Enjoy your new house when you guys get it... Best Wishes... I want to read those COnan books they look awesome!! Sorry for stream of consciousness thing.... Damn, you a pile of books... Now is time to read 'em!!
When you were buying new items, how did you decide where to allocate your available funds? I collect literature, original art, and comics. I have stopped for now, not so much for space reasons, but because I can't decide whether I should focus on one of these collecting areas or keep trying to enjoy all three. The indecision is saving me money, but the indecision isn't as much fun as spending money. I do know that collecting has often been defined as an unhealthy obsession, so maybe a period of not-buying is a good thing. In any case, I'm new to your channel and enjoyed this video. Will subscribe. Thanks.
@@TT-fq7pl That’s the thing, it never felt “rational” when I was making decisions on what to buy. It always felt like I was just chasing momentary highs. All of a sudden I NEEDED this one thing and then it was all I could think about until I had it. Almost like the act of purchasing was like exorcising a demon.
@@AllSortsofWords Thanks for your response. And good luck with your new plan. I think that collecting, if kept under control, is a minor human flaw in the grand scheme of things. Paradoxically, though, the essence of collecting is either a struggle to maintain control or a complete giving in to the demon. I'm four days away from a month of non-essential purchases. I'm hoping that, as with any obsession/addiction, the more time I can go without it, the easier it will get. But I might be wrong! I look forward to the updates on your situation.
I can relate I feel like my comic book collecting has become a addiction even though a relatively harmless one I have so many books I haven't read yet and I read a couple hrs a day would be nice to save more money
I quit when books went over $1 cover price. lol. Then about 2010 someone posted a torrent with scans of every comic book ever made from the 40s to 2010.. it was 50 DVDs...took me almost a month to download... So I've been good for a while. If you search I'm sure it's around.
Keep the stuff, and instead pivot into woodworking and building space savers and nifty construction to display and store your collection. You will pick up a skill and satisfy a need for creation, acquisition, and appreciation.
Definitely makes sense and I guess the difference from a collection and addiction is knowing when to stop and be realistic. Having your forever home with your wife will mean so much more than finding comics or books. Damn having a home cinema would be mad!!
@@lxstboycomics sick, right? Like a whole ass movie theater with a big screen and red seats? I’d even film little intros about keeping the theater clean and turning off your cell phone. Funny ones though with lots of blood and special effects lol

@@JCtheComicGeek You see, so long as I have a physical copy then I’m happy. Do I need an N64 to enjoy Mario 64? Not so long as I have the All Star Collection! Hi, i'm a 52 year old from Belgium. I only started really collecting the things i like (comics, toys) after my house was fully paid and my daughter was independent. Having priority's is not a requirement from God, but common sense. My house is paid for a few years now, and i've aquired a few thousand comics (who are much more expensive than in the U.S.) and a beautifull collection of 70's&80's toys, and when i stand back and look at it all i don't get an overwhelming sense of pride......rather,only one question comes to mind everytime: "how the fuck did i get this old, this fast?" Buy the house you both love, the rest will come soon enough, i promise.
@@jayogilvie8353 LOL no, I definitely want to keep everything because I bought it in the first place because I love it and want it in my life, but I’ll definitely stop ADDING to it.
Obviously I'm back now, but I quit for 25 years. It was in the 90's and I'd got into buying the book and filling them, i was rapidly loosing intrest anyway. There was a huge X-men crossover event, gimick covers lots of c tier books I didn't care about and book ended by an over priced Omega issue. Despite having it on my pull list I went to my LCS and they were trying to charge me double cover. I went cold turkey. Didn't even cancel anything I just never went back. A few years later they went bust. Ha!
@@prettyflyforafilipin I appreciate the concern! But I promise they aren’t. They’re near a window, but kitty cornered so that no direct sunlight ever touches them. The rest of the time they spend their lives in darkness lol
Just seeing you have the Conan Chronicles and paperbacks on your shelf, gives me all I need to know to *Subscribe Now!* Hope this helps you get 2K soon, and maybe even make a couple of dollars towards your home buying fund, there in the land of "live free or die"! I was in your position years ago (at prob. your age). Thankfully, I now outright own my house, still work a decent job with a good salary, and also get Military Retirement and Military Disability pay every month... So now is the time, I can actually start spending a few thousand a month on comics (shhhhhh... don't tell my wife). LOL My journey has just started, but I hope to have as much "Valuable clutter" as you have someday! Have a great day, Bjorn!
I’m running out of space at my house, I’ve accumulated too many materialistic things. I stopped collecting video games a few years back and switched over to comics. Now I’m stopping that as well. No room for comics in my house anymore. Have a new baby coming and need space for her. So I’m going t9 sell off stuff I don’t really need anymore.
It’s somewhat amusing how many accumulator-influencers on UA-cam reach this point eventually. Videos like this are almost a daily occurrence now. Of course, if they spent less time making videos and convincing other people to accumulate mountains of stuff, they’d have more time to actually enjoy all the stuff they keep on buying (or, worse, getting for free) and then get rid of some of it. You know, like collectors USED to do. 😔
What people don’t realize is that when you’re collecting comic books and nerd stuff these things take up space, lots of lots of space. Plus it’s super easy to buy comics when they are only a dollar in a dollar box and before long you end up with a big stack of dollar books. You tell your self I will read these but even before you read them your out buying comics again one can buy comics ten times faster than they can read them. Next thing you know your one short box is like five short boxes then they multiply like crazy and then your left looking at 20 short boxes of comics and thinking how did I get like this. I am a comic book hoarder my names Travis I got a problem I am addicted to comic books and nerd stuff , it’s a hell of a drug. Is cold turkey the only way to stop I too have been trying to slow down my comic collecting believe it or not I wanted to start making different viddys on UA-cam’s about my nes games I have I have found I do like to review my comics kind of like sharing the comics with people or people who might own the comic I am reviewing but they just never opened it up to read it yet you know. Looking forward to seeing your next video it don’t have to be about comics I like the Adam’s family viddy or just pick something that you find interesting that you already have and share it review it tell us about it my bro Ricky Stanicky love ya bbbeeeeyyyyyyyy
All our values effect how we live our lives - and your decisions (or lack of) are a result of that - different strokes for different folks - while I can't relate to the majority of this video, I wish you the best of luck with your life goals
You should really talk to your wife about sharing her next home with you more. It’s sad that she places so little value on your opinions and interests.
@@loudlament1657 No way! It super works for us. I mean, it WOULD be miserable if she was so far off base that the house became miserable, but thankfully she’s got great taste lol
Good for you. It's probably gonna be tough. But you have goals, you're not alone, and you've got the right mindset to do it. May I humbly give un-asked-for advice? During this arc, explore the God part of things more deeply. I don't know your beliefs, but I'll share mine. God is real, and he's more than just a driving force for good or whatever. He wants us to know Him, and there's much more to life than most know because we get caught up in so much stuff, and especially in ourselves. Surely you have a Bible on that shelf or somewhere in the house, anyway. If you don't already, read it. Anyhow, I look forward to seeing future videos and your journey to the next arc.
Thankfully I’m divorced so I get all 3 votes of what I do with my home or how I want all 26,000 comics I own to breathe wherever they choose. Great being single

Funny enough, my wife and I are doing the same. After Terrificon, we will be cutting back, using only what we already have for entertainment. We'll also be dining out less and building more of a savings. Less impulsive purchases can go a long way. Hope to see you at Terrificon!
Just found this video and you gave voice to some thoughts I've been having about collecting. Thank you!
With collectables, you eventually need to have an end game! I replaced all my comics with some omnibus’s!
I like your idea of displaying three-themed books at a time! It's clear you are a writer by the quality of the script. Great video.
@@kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks6842 omg I’m a HUGE fan of your content and have been for a while. Don’t think I’m foolin’ either by the recent sub; this channel isn’t my main, so I hope you don’t mind the double dipping
As I have said before. I do not envy your comic logistics. Now I see you have more than one…issue. Glorious problem to have. Thanks for the content. And I wish you the greatest success in your new path! Looks like you have plenty to enjoy and a bright future ahead!
Man i have a hoarder mentality on occasion but i've had a rough enough life that i can not focus much on the future. Might need someone like you following me around terrificon telling me do you really need that. lol Great video great content hope to hang out at the con.
I needed to hear this. Thank you!
Well said! Putting the goal you share with your wife over, what easily, is an obsession is showing maturity. I look forward to the content that you will continue to produce!
I can relate heavily to not having enough space since i use my comic boxes are all on the floor next to my bed
This is really important and healthy. I look forward to your future journey. Congratulations.
Space and money are our worst enemies. Looking forward to the gratitude era of your channel, it’s something I need to do more of.
-Jay
Thank God (Tailor Swift) you are still making videos. Really love your content. Good luck man.
Well Taylor hates God
I can relate I feel like my comic book collecting has become a addiction even though a relatively harmless one I have so many books I haven't read yet and I read a couple hrs a day would be nice to save more money
I quit when books went over $1 cover price. lol. Then about 2010 someone posted a torrent with scans of every comic book ever made from the 40s to 2010.. it was 50 DVDs...took me almost a month to download... So I've been good for a while. If you search I'm sure it's around.
Collect postage stamps. They are smaller. Or postcards
Keep the stuff, and instead pivot into woodworking and building space savers and nifty construction to display and store your collection. You will pick up a skill and satisfy a need for creation, acquisition, and appreciation.
“Psychotic obsession with acquisition…”
that part.
best of luck!
@@AllSortsofWords oh that would be so funny 😂😂😂
You definitely have enough stuff to continue to create great videos. I look forward to you diving into your current collection. It'll be fun!
On an unrelated note, how about Celine Dion's performance at the Olympics?!? ❤
Yup, I hear you. I've said no to buying movies and now I'm actually watching them.
@@wowster-so8sx FAVORITE MOVIE EVER GO!!1! Mine? (no joke or exaggeration): “Steel Magnolias”.
P.S. what are your thoughts on the retro videogame scene? The prices, the resellers on UA-cam and so on?
@@JCtheComicGeek You see, so long as I have a physical copy then I’m happy. Do I need an N64 to enjoy Mario 64? Not so long as I have the All Star Collection! I buy retro when there’s absolutely no other option so I’m inoculated from the ebbs and flows of the market…although every day I thank God I bought my silent hill games when they first came out because great googly moogly they’re out of control.
C'mon Gregorio and Jessica - Get a room already! Am I right?
Getting that home that's right for your family is HUGE. I want that for you. You're approaching this the way that's right for you and that's the only way to do it. I think the gratitude arc is going to be your best so far. Way better than that arc from Berzerk where they were on the boat with mermaids. What the hell even was that?!
I'm pretty sure none of us tune in because you are showing off cool shit. I mean, we are, but that's not the MAIN reason. The real reason people watch you is because your perspective, your thoughts, your humor brings us joy.
I guarantee you could make a video about that bookmark collection and make us laugh our asses off. So keep the videos coming. Talk about whatever you want. I'll watch every damn one.
Lovin' the Godzilla tee, dude!!
It all makes sense my friend. As long as you keep making great content of any sort for us to watch, then you do you Boo
I’ve recently gotten back into the hobby after being away since 1994..I’m getting omnibuses and the cheaper marvel essentials and I’m happy..as for floppies I’m probably gonna pick some stuff that I used to love like moon knight and the punisher and collect them..I don’t know but I DO
Know I don’t like digital!!!
You remind me of @LettuceComics older brother!😅 you only live once but family first for sure! Your hobbies will still always be there!
5:45 THIS IS WHAT YOU CAME HERE FOR.
I often find myself saying "Man, I wish we had one more room in this house". I'm in the same boat.
Hoping to meet you at Terrificon! Was going to bring you a gift😂 ironic right. Love you bye.
I’m sure you have books in your PC you can make content with or haven’t talked about yet. Happy savings.
Hi, i'm a 52 year old from Belgium. I only started really collecting the things i like (comics, toys) after my house was fully paid and my daughter was independent. Having priority's is not a requirement from God, but common sense. My house is paid for a few years now, and i've aquired a few thousand comics (who are much more expensive than in the U.S.) and a beautifull collection of 70's&80's toys, and when i stand back and look at it all i don't get an overwhelming sense of pride......rather,only one question comes to mind everytime: "how the fuck did i get this old, this fast?"
Buy the house you both love, the rest will come soon enough, i promise.
I am still a slave to my “psychotic obsession with acquisition”. The hobby is holding me tightly in its clutches.
Don't want to paraphrase but does this mean.. stuff is for sale so you don't have to move it. :)
Ha!
Careful displaying your collectibles in direct sunlight.
@@prettyflyforafilipin I appreciate the concern! But I promise they aren’t. They’re near a window, but kitty cornered so that no direct sunlight ever touches them. The rest of the time they spend their lives in darkness lol
balance. Make sure to have it as you go.
Buy store bought food Ramon noodles 🍜 and weenies stuff like that.800 people need to come back and leave a 👍
BTW, here is a couple dollars towards your home! ☺☺☺
@@SonOfCrom-1932 Wow! This is incredibly sweet and generous. I appreciate you
(Also you could trade a short box here and there for new pleasures. Zero dollars) (in the future)
@@kurtpearson2793 trading is DEFINITELY on the table, but even then, shipping is a thing to consider too.
@@AllSortsofWords logistics are real. I’d figure those into any trade’s bottom line. Good point
Bonne chance, my friend.
I need this!!!!
It would be smart to put that thousand dollars a month into a Roth IRA
VERY curious...!!
🖖👍 DO IT
Need cheap meal ideas? I have some ...let me know...!!
Makes sense to me.
@@comicbookninja5268 I mean, comics are cool, but have you heard of houses? They’re heckin sick.
@@AllSortsofWords I'm also quitting for the same reason. I don't have the room.
All our values effect how we live our lives - and your decisions (or lack of) are a result of that - different strokes for different folks - while I can't relate to the majority of this video, I wish you the best of luck with your life goals
cool vid.
You should really talk to your wife about sharing her next home with you more. It’s sad that she places so little value on your opinions and interests.
Most important take away from this is that you are still making videos
The whole "two votes to one" thing seems pretty miserable. Just having one room as a grown man? I'd set my standards higher if I were you.
@@loudlament1657 No way! It super works for us. I mean, it WOULD be miserable if she was so far off base that the house became miserable, but thankfully she’s got great taste lol
You have a basement, right?
just when jsa is starting xd
You are collecting way too much. Pick one option, maybe two, and stick with it.
