I wish that suburbs in general weren't so boring. I wish the US in general implemented mixed zoning more.
The purpose of Livonia is to not have mixed use. It’s to have boring life, so people go elsewhere for their excitement.
I feel like west Livonia is on the up and up. Hopcat just came in. It is on the border of Northville, Plymouth, and Farmington/Hills. 5, 6, and 7 mile on the west side of Farmington Rd seems pretty great.
Yep! I don't even drink beer and I'm pretty excited about Hopcat coming to Livonia 😄
Im 51 we lived there from the 70s to 90. It was awesome living there in the 80s. I remember going to the livonia mall.
I grew up there and went to Winston Churchill High School. Joined the Army to get out in 1980. Now I live in Bowling Green Kentucky!
Oh wow! That's a big move. My grandmother (Hilda from Alabama) was a hall monitor there from the 70's - 2000's. I graduated from CHS is '00
@@PaulWolfert There was a hall monitor there named Margaret. Older lady. A lot of kids made fun of her. I graduated in '78. I don't remember Hilda. I'll have to check the '78 Churchill yearbook.

When i grew up in Livonia, it was the safest city over 100,000 people in America . Now? Not so much. Why? Detroit moving in.
Well, if I moved closer to work, I'd probably want to be in Livonia, Canton, Plymouth, Northville, Novi or Farmington. As you mentioned, there isn't much housing variety in Livonia, which is what makes me hesitate the most. I don't want to give up having a master bathroom or attached garage, and a large amount of houses there are lacking both. No actual plans to move any time soon, but I'd be lying if I didn't ever think about it, as I'm driving to or from work with all the construction everywhere.
I lived in Livonia growing up and my mom sold for $172,000 and now that same house is “worth” $340,000. Insane. They haven’t redone anything in the house either, just paint

I was actually born in garden city michigan, i dont remember how old i was when we moved to livonia, i was young went to adams elementary, riley junior high, franklin high school. But growing up in livonia in the 80s was awesome, my dad taking me to tiger stadium, when school was out in the summer we played pick up games of baseball down from our neighborhood. That movie the sandlot. That was my childhood great times. Back then there was a mall i think it was called the livonia mall correct me if im wrong. Im 51 that was over 30 yrs ago. My dad worked at Gm, we moved away in 1990 bc he transferred to sprinhill tn, when they build the saturn plant. There both from the south and my mom wanted to back. Thats the only reason we moved. I at 1st i did not want to move but the 1st wk in Tennessee i was happy never looked back. But thats the only reason we moved, would we have stayed there? Who knows but during that time it was fun.

Too many Hindus and blacks moved in 20 years ago.
I want to leave I no longer feel safe in the area I live in and I don't really know where we are going to go

I lived in liviona for 10 years nothing has happened to me, and I'm in the area near Detroit. On the edge of liviona. One of the most dangerous liviona areas.
Home prices go way up because of increasing demand. If thousands of people are leaving Livonia, then a larger number is seeking to me in.

Funny. I live in John Grace Southfield. Moved in 1991. It was supposed to be a 5 YEAR flip er up and flip and move on. 32 years we are still here. Our house was a fixer upper in 1991. I was going to learn drywall, electric, plumbing, heating. Guess what! DID NOT HAPPEN. Not going to happen. Now the wife and I are pushing 60. Looking at place we are going to die in! Would you recommend Livonia?
I grew up in Livonia. The good points in the 60's and 70's: It was very safe, they had some of the best schools at the time, It wasn't completely developed so we had a lot of space to play; woods, creeks, fields etc. Bad points about growing up in Livonia in the 60's and 70's: No parks close by, no cultural activities like museums or anything, people were snobbish and too conservative. No downtown like the man said, so nothing to do but go to the mall. Left when I was 19 for sunny, open minded and fun loving California. My neighborhood grew up really nicely though. Lots of trees and the houses are well kept up.
Livonia in the 60's and 70's sounds like a mix of safety and snobbishness, with a side of mall visits. But hey, at least you got to go to sunny California and experience a different kind of vibe!

OMG, my dad is from the Chicago area, so I grew up having Italian beef sandwiches when we'd visit my paternal grandmother. I work in Livonia, so I'm sure they'll get a lot of business from me.

Are they? It's in the top 5 of the hottest markets right now. And I DONT KNOW WHY!!. There's no culture no downtown there's nothing special here. Who's paying 350-450k for a home here? It's normally tradesmen, teachers, nurses etc.. the homes are built on sinking soil. Seriously.. who's the new demographic here? Doctors? Lawyers?
Sinking soil? That is pretty bad.
@T Nit way way way back in the day...livonia was all water. So the soil is like this clay type of soil.

@@backrack01 If you've done any type of new home construction around here, you'd know it's almost all forest or marsh before they get developed. Livonia has great soil and in fact was used for farming before it turned into suburbs.
@js0pk0 its mostly clay. It won't happen over night but ur home will sink.. eventually. If ur home is built in the 1960-1970s then it's already happening.
Livonia is HORRIBLE for anyone with a disability. City hall you will kill yourself trying to her into the building because the public entrance ramps are too steep for wheelchairs; I lost control of my chair from top of the ramp and crashed into the brick wall on opposite side of the ramp. You will never ever see anyone with a disability on the street or in the parks by design. The city took away park benches so disabled people can sit; mayor claims they create blight attract homeless; So where does my friend sit with me? a City dumped a dump truck filled with dirt in front of trails at Rotary park trails claiming they needed to stop golfcarts using the trails. The golfcarts use the trails still; wheelchair users be damned. And no handicap porta potties yet 2 regular pots every 200 yards. City shut down virtual public meetings claiming State of Michigan made the city do this. It's interesting that every other community holds virtual public meetings. If the State of Michigan disallows them for local govts like Northville, Plymouth, Redford, Novi then what makes Livonia so special. The city also removed most of its handicapped sidewalks and installed cement ramps with 10" curbs so steep you will break your neck or face if you fall on it. While every other community around Livonia is installing handicap bathrooms, parks, city meetings, benches, Livonia is taking them out. But why? The message I get from Livonia they don't want to serve anyone with a disability for which the city receives federal funds to provide.
I left Michigan for many reasons.
There is an oppressive feel to the state. Never had much luck there.
Weather sucks. Less sunshine than Seattle. 100 degree 100% humidity in the summer (overcast most days) and horrific damp cold winters, gloomy and depressing. The whole state is depressing. Add to that, the northern latitude making the sunset at 4:45 in the Afternoon in dead of winter or 9 PM in the summer, is depressing as hell.
No real culture. Yes we have some awesome museums in Detroit...but you have to go through Detroit.
Cookie Cutter houses, very little character.
Cops are dicks and have serious quotas for handing out tickets.
Job market sucks.
Hell, the dating scene sucked.
Moved to the Marianas Islands (US territory that is much closer to Asia than the US Mainland) and have been for the most part happy since. Beautiful Island, not crowded. No pollution, basically a tropical paradise. Also lots of pretty ladies. Job market isn't great here, but if you find a niche it is awesome. As for culture, it is fairly easy and cheap to fly to Tokyo, Bangkok, Manila or Seoul from here, (as expensive as going to Florida). And the island is very diverse with people from all over Asia here.
Ouch. I am originally from livonia. I understand, the winters are BRUTAL, long and dark and depressing. However, there is SO MUCH BEAUTY in Michigan! The falls cannot be beat, gorgeous changing of the seasons, Traverse City for example. Cider mills and changing leaves, wine country. The UP with the sweeping sand dunes off the water is some of the most beautiful land in the country. Towns like Birmingham and Royal Oak have the best restaurants, along with U of M in Ann Arbor. Great shopping, culture and good food there too. Michigan has so many stunning older Victorian homes with character, they are not all cookie cutter. The Frank Lloyd Wright estate is beautiful. Or the Whitney built in 1894, there's a very long list. The job market is no different than other states, ups and downs. Glad you found a better place, it's important to be happy. Its too bad you didn't like our state. It's truly a great state (and I have lived all over the country in many states) Be well.
@@kimberlyhendren2097 I grew up on the border of Westland and Livionia, myself also lived in Redford. I guess you are right about some of the things. I did enjoy Royal Oak, Ann Arbor and Plymouth, quaint little down towns with some nice hang-outs. And I also miss the museums. Worked at Henry Ford Museum myself. Also I have to say that the DIA is amazing.
But I was in a perpetual funk and really didn't get anywhere in that state. Taxes and expenses were too high in most respects was part of it.
That said, Island life is agreeing with me much more...and recently, have been going to SE Asia (it is cheap from here) and I can say that Bangkok is an amazing city. Clean. Safe, inexpensive and some of the best restruants for any type of cuisine you can think of and the shopping is amazing too. Vietnam is awesome as well.
Thanks for reminding me that there are still nice things there. I spent most of my childhood and much of my adult life in Michigan, much of it wanting to be someplace else though.
@@davidradich9342 I totally get what you are saying! I was in a perpetual funk there myself. I remember those years! . It's hard because I live in a different state now but sometimes I miss MI. I'm so glad you found such a great place to live! Happiness is all that matters 😊
After 20 years, it seems nothing much has changed. The public schools are trash. Cops are pretty much a dissapointment unless to nickle and dime you or harass kids, didn’t care when I tried to file a report for my car being smashed by a hit & run driver one even went up to my face and got aggressive. Nothing really much to do except the rec center, drugs, or go to neighboring Farmington Hills or Novi for entertainment. Pretty depressing overall.
Thirsty police
For the past 15 years the city has been cutting down all those beautiful 65 year old trees than lined many streets in the subdivisions. Also, many Arabs are now moving to Livonia. And once a few come, Livonia will be the next Dearborn and Dearborn Hgts.

Why’s everyone moving from Livonia? Best answer: it’s in Wayne County (Detroit).
There are also some pretty good places in Wayne county too

So Livonia has no there there, that means it's the quintessential US suburb. It sounds like a mind-numbingly boring place. If the teenagers don't get to spend their time playing video games chances are they might do crime out of sheer boredom. This is what ruined Detroit!
Very boring. Me and my son go on daily walks and there's nothing to do! Our area is almost nothing but fast food and 2 gyms right next to each other
I hate driving in livonia. The roads wreck my car is the main reason.

I have lived in Livonia for 60 years and still do. I attended Livonia Public Schools in the 70s and 80s, and they were terrible back then. I can only imagine what they're like now.
Michigan ranks 48th in the nation for housing prices. Prices have been going up nation wide (by design), so it seems like sophistry to single out a certain area. Personally, I don't care what city I am in, because I have a kingdom within me. The ground you stand on in the moment is trivial, especially since so many people regardless of geographical location, have been mislead when it comes to the nature of the realm they are standing in.
