    The moving of ranged units, not using wait and not building a city hall/capitol were very painful but glad to see you're enjoying the game. I look forward to more!

    This is awesome Ross! I think you'll have a lot of fun as you get into the game more. HOMM II and III are like two flavours of ice cream. You might like one of them more, but both are delicious.

      Loved your metaphore! Indeed, depending if you aim for a more straight forward experience or a longer and more complex one, Heroes 2 or 3 will do the job.

      @@jrioscouto It's so true! I get together with a friend of mine regularly and we play Heroes II when we can't get everyone together to play D&D. I think it's time I introduce Heroes III to him to mix things up. :)

      Yeah, I mean those feelings probably echoed my own at the time, just amplified a few thousand times :) I did not like the art style at all - a bit harsh on the music though! Overall, I was happy to have more homm content. It was the last homm game I'd play though.

    Primary difference: Knight/Castle has the most powerful units instead of the least powerful.

    So you're trying out HOMM3, too? Cool! As a long-time HOMM2 player myself, I had trouble figure out the build order to get more money. Some of the things that threw me off were:
    -I need to build the Tavern to recruit heroes. I also need the Tavern to build a Town Hall.
    -Well isn't in the game, so I need to build a Citadel and then a Castle to increase creature income.
    -Wood and ore are very important in this game, since you need them to build a Fort/Citadel/Castle, Blacksmith, Mage Guild, and Marketplace to build a City Hall and a Capitol to increase daily income.
    -Resource Silo = free resource(s)/day

    Me watching this:
    Screaming internally: 1. Turn the movement shadow on! 2. Get the market place, FFS, so you can get the City Hall so you can get the Capitol! You're running out of money so fast, for God's sake! 3. What is this build order?! 4. Right click on Bonus to get info on it in campaign!

    whenever I boot up HoMM3 I wind up skipping the intro cutscene. When I was a kid, I made a point of always watching the intro (I did for many games, and there are a lot of 90s and 00s games I still insist on watching the intro when I boot them up) but as I got older I just found the intro to be kinda cringey.
    I don't know how old I was, but I think a friend made a point of saying "that metal thong she's wearing would be one of the most painful experiences, it looks ridiculous" and from then on I can't not think about that. Easier to just skip the cutscene and not think about it

    I was screaming a bit internally that you are keeping the entire army on one hero knowing that your heroes transverse to the next campaign and grabbing less than Idealic abilitys from witches huts. Also I know they're less effective but you can shoot from where your range units start. But everyone starts somewhere its just a bit more involved in the third game.

    Aight here we go. Good luck on the campaign! The heroes 3 community WILL come and tell you what is best for you with 25 years of experience. They will tell you how bad you are doing at every turn. Please do not heed the critique. I'd encourage the people to be constructive early on. There's also been a lack of HoMM3 longplays recently, so you can expect a slight pull of attention.
    Much of the building blocks are exactly the same as Heroes 2, there's just much and more added in with a big emphasis on better balance. That being said, pikemen are one of the best tier 1 creatures in the game :D

    I would recommend horn of the abyss expansion + hd mod (not the one from steam but fanmade)
    it adds a lot of quality of life, and you can also change resolution for big screens
    horn of the abyss even has online lobby with 2k players online daily
    there are 2 new factions which are really balanced and designed perfectly to fit in
    factory was released at the beginning of 2024

    Watching you play this made me realize how different 2 and 3 are. Like - I noticed you picked gold from the chests instead of XP - probably due to you not knowing you can upgrade your Town Hall to a City Hall for more money income and then even upgrade it to a Capitol for EVEN MORE money.

    I can't believe there are people who only stick with one game from the franchise. I played all of them as I grew up and I love them all for different reasons. One problem in HoMM II is that there is a balance issue between towns. Warlock is very powerful, ranged units get shut down fast, since the flyers cross the map instantly, even if slowed. You really need an answer to Black Dragons and Titans because Phoenixes and Bone Dragons don't cut it. And the well is a bit strange. like you get 2 Peasants but 2 Crusaders. And the lack of gold. HoMM III really did some work on that and it is more forgiving. I don't know why that guy in chat goes crazy. He is talking about HoMM III like it is IV. I could understand if that was the case. IV's design of towns is abysmal and the graphics are awful. Only saving grace is that the music and campaign story is one of the best in the franchise.

    • @frankvandorp9732
      @frankvandorp9732 5 місяців тому +7

      Flyers do not cross the map instantly when slowed in HoMM 2, that's the reason I always considered Mass Slow to be one of the most powerful spells in the game.
      But you are correct that HoMM 2 was poorly balanced and this was fixed in subsequent editions. I loved HoMM 2, 3 and 4 as a kid, but never liked 5. That just felt like a less interesting version of 3, that seemed to try to sell itself solely on graphics.

    • @danielvereb4579
      @danielvereb4579 5 місяців тому +3

      Oh I could be wrong. But I thought I slowed a gargoyle and it still crossed the map. I too don't like H5. Well, I do like Tribes of the East because it allows for choose from 2 upgrades per unit. But I have a rocky relationship with the game. The game did not work well with one of my old Radeon cards. Got washed out textures with no way to fix it. Have the original complete edition too. So sad. Story was dumb too. I was rooting for the evil demon king because he was smart. But when the good side is so dumb, it is not hard lol. Also, no Sandro. At least they fixed that in H6 :D

      @@frankvandorp9732 You liked 4 but not 5? How is that possible? The only thing I dislike about 5 is that the campaigns are too short.
      6 is pretty good too. The problems with that one is the campaign maps being a bit boring.
      Also, I have fond memories of my first time playing HOMM2, Knight on Broken Alliance. I don't think kid me survived long enough to know whether or not purple got Dimension Door.
      God damnit now I gotta play Broken Alliance, later.

    • @frankvandorp9732
      @frankvandorp9732 5 місяців тому +1

      @@ParleLeVu I tried 5, but it felt like a inferior copy of 3 where only the graphics were better but everything else felt phoned in. It was a lot of little things like the fact that, when visiting an adventure map site, you didn't even get a dialog window with some flavorful tale of what happens at the site, but just a single symbol like "+1 luck" or whatever. It felt really low-effort and after a few hours trying I had lost interest.

    • @ParleLeVu
      @ParleLeVu 5 місяців тому +1

      @@frankvandorp9732 Well, I do agree to some extent. It wasn't as good as 3. And the graphics really weren't all that either. Blocky, cartoonish creatures.
      I think people liked it because it wasn't IV. And it was decent enough with some cool spells and a cool talent system. My game didn't work properly either, I couldn't split units because for some reason my keyboard commands didn't register in the game, so I couldn't shift+click units to split them, which is just insanely dumb. I KNOW it worked at one point, but once it didn't, it never came back.

    It's hard for me to pick which game I like better between 2 and 3, I played them both for so many years back when the world was young. I will say though, that I absolutely prefer the Heroes 2 community... because the absolute units that have played homm3 for 25 years non-stop have a tendency to be abit brain damaged in their approach to how people play "their" game.

    Build the Capitol first (4000 Gold per day)! You are running out of money so fast because you somehow just stopped building once you have some very basic structures. Also, no Market Place? You would quickly upgrade Town to Castle and build a Market Place in HOMM2, why not do it in HOMM3?
