Nice one Tony, that a really nice display at a very reasonable price. I like the fact that you could see SWR, Power, Mod & ALC all at the same time. Its a really handy solution when you have the radio mounted in a location that makes viewing otherwise difficult. OK so where has that new ATU come from !. Thats a Beast Tony.
Excellent video. I am looking for a solution as my 857 has the dreaded zebra display now. Question - if you change your radio from VFO to Memory display does this display also change? Sounds like a silly question but what is displayed would depend on how the software was written and what it is capturing in the radio. Tnx Tony.
Hi, thank you. sorry to say that i have sold my 897 with this display to buy a 857 like you have. It will only show the information that is send trough CAT.. so menu it will not do. For your display problem, there are replacement displays on AliExpress if you are good with a soldering iron, this could also be a solution for you. but this external display is perfect for supporting old eyes like mine as an extra :) i will put some links to the replacemnet display in the video description 73 Tony
Hallo Gertjan, de externe display is alleen in groen, maar later wordt het misschien gecopieerd door andere en dan komen er meer kleuren. er is al een aanbieder CatDisplays , maar die zijn een stuk duurder, maar hebben wele kleuren.
Hi Tony. Interesting video. Very good explained. I want to buy, but i hope it works with 817. My question what should the menu setting be if you use this combined with a linear on the back ?
Hi Kees, i did not get it to work on my 817, the 12volts that should power trough the CAT plug somehow does not power the display, but that could just be on mine. But i have niet tried connecting it with external power. on the 897 you can connect it via the MIC plug also, this is not an option for the 817. as in the menu you cant change that setting for the mic. i am not sure how to combine it with the liniar.. maybe make a splitter for only the PTT
Hello, I have japan version of FT-897D and want to know if theres any way to unlock the tx for MARS/CAP. The US onewill do it but this one I am told by Yaesu is locked for Japan bands. I am curious if you know a way.
Hi, That is a very good question and something to think about when you buy any of the Japan version Yeasu. sorry to say to you, but from what i have read many times. the Japan firmware locks the mars/cap. so even if you do the mod. it still won't work. i have not read about people successfully overwriting the firmware with US version . if you did or have , please share with us.
I’ve been trying to figure out the difference in the FT-897S versions I keep seeing for sale on eBay ,, that are in Japan . I have heard they don’t have the same frequency capabilities ?? The prices are much cheaper , even after import taxes and fees ,, do you know what the S model in 897S means ?
The frequency, is prob not a problem after a MARS mod.but in Japan there are also low power models... so maybe thats why it is cheaper. so be sure you have a 100Watts model.
@@Dallas-Rife-UDX-347-Tennessee i read also that sometimes the japan firmware is locked to transmit out of band, so mars mod does not work in that case. there are some tricks trough CAT to temporarily hack this. i would be careful buying a japan model.
@@TonyAlbus Yeah I figure you’re probably correct . I have an American version , 897D ,, it’s in great shape , I’d kinda like to have another one but them 900 to 1200 dollars prices for one in as good as shape as the one I have , hurt pretty bad .
anyway to dim the display? bright works great outside. but inside could be too bright for some eyes. just need to wait a month (money in thing) and will be buying one. are these only available from communist china? or can one buy from a source in the USA?
so how can you change things on the radio if you can't see the radios display? the new display won't let you see three buttons to change mike gain for instance?
@@TonyAlbus I can confirm it works on my Ft 857 & my Ft 817 I recently replaced the ft 817 with a Ft 818nd & that also works No problem Have not tried using the ethernet port yet.Waiting for a ethernet cable to arrive as the ft 818 cat port is being used for the Ldgz 817 atu
Yes that is correct, but i did not find a setting to switch it from CAT/LIN/ATU ... but is should work anyway, then prob my power is just not good from my port. i think its my 817 that is not good, i will check the power on the plug.
Nice video Tony. A good solution for folks with lines on displays or needing a remote display. Thanks for sharing
Thank you, yes perfect for that display problem or eyes getting less. and reasaneble priced. wideley available Ali,Ebay,Amazon etc.

That's an interesting price point! And good packing too. 😃
Thank you.! :) that too
Cool. I have the FT-818ND and planning to make my own external CAT-display. Mostly because it's a challenge :)
Cool plan,
Try the color display.
Yes the catmeters are very nice, but do have a different price range

This is an excellent video. Please do a test on the low cost xtal from China. They used to be under ten pounds a few years ago.
