Great movie. I was also interested in the character of Lenny, the father of the three sisters who has become world-weary and cynical despite having the trappings of success. His doctor tells him that he has the heart of an ox and will live to be 100, as long as he lays off the salt; in the final scene having lunch with his family, we see him smothering his food with salt.
Also, the lead child's performance is really great and underrated! When he asks the dad whether he raped those kids, his shock and horror at realizing what his father has done is so palpable. Also his concerns about "coming" are just hilarious and add much-needed comic relief to the film.
What made that final scene so disturbing is its highly ambiguous nature: is he really devastated because his Father admitted to being a massive pedophile, or is he gutted because his Father “jerks off instead” (of banging him, his own son), but will screw his friend?
It was difficult to watch. . . . the honesty and closeness between the father and son was touching ... even though the father was very sick, he loved his son and managed to not touch him ... even though the content of their conversations was really abusive.
This was a very uncomfortable movie. Yet, engaging. The acting, the tone, and camera work worked together to keep these issues awkward. The dark humor breaks tension while reminding you the tension is still there. The offbeat elements keeps us a step away. We don't feel safe, but we are secure enough to keep watching. Done wrong this movie would have sent bad messages. Still, I think this is a one watch, and done for me.
One thing you missed is that Kristina wasn't Allen's second choice. At that point his neighbor Helen was sexually available. Instead he decided in that moment to commit to what seemed to be a more realistic relationship opportunity. The reason he didn't get naked wasn't his insecurity either, it was because she had revealed earlier that she had no interest in sex.
I was hoping someone would talk about the use of colour in the film. Specifically Blues and red. When I was watching it the light blues to me seem to represent the hopeless in pursing happiness. I think it’s because the colour is light, innocent and child-like but it was always use to describe a person’s melancholy. When it was a darker ultramarine blue (which wasn’t that often) I think it was meant to represent the ideal happiness, hope, or the illusion of achieving happiness. The wine bottle in the author house when the neighbour was able to come inside was one of the instances of this. The reds used in the movie was always used when one of the characters was interacting with someone wearing blue. I think the red meant compliancy or happiness. I not really sure but the character wearing red always juxtaposed the character wearing blue. In the final scene where the family was having dinner and drinking red wine, it seemed that level of wine represented the amount of happiness the person had at the end of the film. I’d love to hear someone else’s interpretation of this.
I first watched this as a sophomore in high school. I was one of those snooty cinephiles who'd deliberately watch obscure films like this to seem cool (even though nobody cared because 99.9% of teenagers are even aware of this films existence). Anyway, the first time I watched it I found it uncomfortable and tedious. I couldn't understand why my idol at the time, Roger Ebert, would bestow it with a coveted 4/4 star review and praise its "humor". What humor?? It wasn't until several years had passed that I rediscovered this film and gave it a second chance. Only then did I understand it. This film is truly for adults only. Not just because it's extremely disturbing content but because it requires an exposure of adulting, where the happiness school promised would come if you got a college degree and your own place to live never arrived. You have to really be an adult to really empathize the depths of these characters despondency. The comedy comes from a sense of familiarity. Women like Lara Flynn Boyle's character who dream of being raped just to enhance their writing career are not even all that uncommon if you look at the attention whores on social media. Phillip Seymour Hoffman realizing he's too fat and ugly to ever score the woman of his dreams and crawling into bed with a whackjob like Camryn Manheim's character out of sheer desperation to be loved? That's painful reality. The suburban mom casually telling the hippie sister that she never expected she'd ever amount to anything? The grandfather dumping salt on his food in hopes it'll kill him? This is all reality and it's hilarious because it's all-too-real. I love this film so much.
I agree though that it's a film for adults only. I've thought several times about using it in a college film course, and always end up concluding that it's too intense emotionally for the average 19-year-old. Not that a few wouldn't get it. But most would just see the "Ewww ..." factor.
@@georgik1963Especially college students nowadays LOL. They are so freaking sensitive about everything. All they could focus on is the pedophilia and not understand anything else. It's kind of like The Great Gatsby in a way. It makes a lot more sense when you're 30 than it does when you're 18. Ironically though, if it wasn't for the pedophilia I think that this movie would resonate with young people because kids nowadays are bleak and hopeless as these characters LOL
I watched this movie recently after you recommended it to me and I gotta say it's one of the darkest and most shocking films I've seen. It's a brilliant piece of filmmaking but frankly, it was very hard to watch.. Truly a cruel, disturbing, depressing and gut-wrenching experience. After you watch it, you simply just can't forget it. I agree with everything you said about the film and thanks for the recommendation, Antoni m8! Keep it up!
+OBS Animations I'm really glad that certain people such as yourself actually take my recommendations into consideration instead of just disregarding them, especially with underrated films such as this one. Coming back to a comment like this from a stressful day at work truly made my day - so thank you buddy!
This is one of my favorite movies its so well done. Everyone acted so well, the filming of scenes between the adu,the and children were done seperate for the kids mental safety. They wanted to tell a real story with a raw message but also filmed responsibly. Take notes cuties
Very interesting review with some great points, but I guess 1 kid does end up happy by the end (The kid who finally ejaculates haha) It's an amazing movie as a character study for sure, but next time you watch it, approach it as a comedy. The title is intentionally ironic as is the movie. It's probably what I would consider the best dark comedy of all time. Sometimes the tension build-ups are so uncomfortable you have to laugh. Also, the father in the family who is looking for happiness after his divorce, if you didn't pick up on it has a very subtle sub-plot of wanting to kill himself or at least feel something via being in poor health. After he get's his perfect health results from the doctor you can see him loading his plates up with salt as to some-way affect his life. I believe he was ready to die, but wanted to avoid something dramatic like an obvious suicide or something.
+Tarks Gauntlet Thanks! It definitely is an amazing film - a unique blend of dark comedy and drama which also serves as a character study for multiple individuals. I probably should have elaborated on the aspect of comedy a bit more as I did genuinely find this film hilarious at times. Also that's a very interesting point about the father - I did notice a few subtleties regarding depression and suicidal thoughts... but never enough to fully analyse him.
Antoni Tolwinski I've probably just watched the movie too many times for my own good haha. Great review though. Like others I came here form Horrible Reviews, and I've subbed as well. Keep up the good work man. Look forward to checking out your back log and future videos.
+Tarks Gauntlet It's good to re-watch films, that way they stay fresh in your mind and you get to discover interesting elements you may not have noticed before. Thanks again, man! I'm working hard on my content so it was nice to get a little boost from Horrible Reviews on Facebook - it was a kind gesture and it felt great to receive all of this positive feedback.
I really liked this movie Dylan Baker is one of the finest actors I've seen, this movie was so ridiculously funny and sadistically true with portraying how to find happiness. I also recommend you watch a film called 'Me and You and Everyone we Know' with John Hawkes & Miranda July. Great movie if you liked Happiness.
I agree, I really should try and see more films with Dylan Baker as I only recognise him from 'Happiness' as well as Sam Raimi's 'Spider-Man' trilogy... and based on those films alone I believe he's a severely underrated actor. Also, thank you for the recommendation! I just had a look at the IMDb page for it and it definitely looks like a film right up my alley.
I am still disturbed by the psychiatrist father who rapes his son.Its so messed up and so wrong that even when it came out, the scene had me disturbed.
Incredibly brave performance by Dylan Baker. Imagine taking on this role with the knowledge that you may be mistaken for a pedophile, rather than an actor portraying a pedophile, or typecast in the industry. Philip Seymour Hoffman of course dares to go there. May be the two most courageous performances I've seen on celluloid. Thanks for this thoughtful review, Antoni.
for some reason bill's story interests me a lot. Thinking about how this happens and how someone go be this way. How any random normal person is actually a monster
Because it is shocking that this very sick man is a psychiatrist, in a job where he is supposed to be helping people, when he is the worst kind of sick... it is ironic.
There's nothing wrong with Matt Damien's acting. However, Philip Seymour Hoffman was a step above most. I think that's why the performance came off so genuine.
Only just came across this channel but it's amazing how you can do such a brilliant analysis on movies most people would avoid well done and great job just subscribed :)
Thank you so much! That means a lot to me - comments like this are essentially one of the main reasons why I continue creating content (since I don't really get any revenue and most people I know think it's pointless). I would really appreciate if you could also check out some of my newer content and let me know if I'm "improving" in any way, because it feels like I am... but I may just be deluding myself ;D
Thank you mista gg and spookyrice. Also. Imagine being the parents to the kids who acted in this movie. How could you agree to let your kid be in this movie. I think it’s insaneeee. How could you read the script and agree to let your child be in it.
I have another video on another one of my favourite films pretty much completed, just need to add some credits and a couple of finishing touches (also waiting on the right time to release it). Aside from that, I really want to create my own films... so I'm heading that way primarily. The drawing was created by a very talented guy I used to be friends with, here's a link to some of his work: radshoe.newgrounds.com/ :)
This movie is amazing, there I said it. The last scene with the father and the son is so great and shocking. That dinner scene with the family was just, so.... depressing.
I like the point, that is implied, by the behavior of the senior Ben Gazarras' character. He's burnt out, in life, and sexual function. he is not, leaving his wife, because, he has found a new " younger, hotter model'', he's simply burnt out on life, and, wants to play golf. at this point, to not get his ball, in the Golf course holes; is less frustrating, than the human interactive alternative. women think; it's about them, or another woman when a guy leaves; when often, it's mostly about the guy feeling disconnected. To, blame, is to miss the point.
I 100% agree with you that portraying something does not equal condoning something. People always give great films like American Psycho, A Clockwork Orange (as you mentioned), and even Fight Club shit for portraying violence, but in reality they are missing the overarching social commentary of those movies!
I can certainly understand focusing on Bill and Allen as they are the most disturbing characters, but having seen Happiness several times, I see a different, more unified film. For me, the film is about a family--the parents whose marriage is on the rocks and their three adult daughters, each in their own strained situations. It's a parallel to Interiors by Woody Allen, a deadly serious drama without a single bright moment. Solandz made an interesting choice in casting Louise Lasser, Woody Allen's ex-wife, as the mother. It's the same irony seen in casting Marla Maples, recently divorced from Donald Trump, as the real estate agent who recognizes that divorce was the best thing that ever happened to her. Mona, the mother, is like Eve in Interiors in that both are devastated by the impending end of their marriages. Mona, however, ends up in a better place, like everyone else in the family. Nothing ends well for anyone in Interiors, least of all Eve. Lenny, the father, is like Arthur in Interiors. Lenny's affair with Diane is like Arthur's new fiancée Pearl. Both Diane and Pearl are introduced at the center of their respective films as a bright colorful ray of hope. The difference is that Diane is as desperate as Lenny, while Pearl offers a hope for restored life in a world of deadly depression. The three daughters don't correspond as easily. In each film, two of the daughters have unfulfilled artistic ambitions. In each, one of the daughters has a seemingly fulfilling personal set-up. However, their personal characteristics are combined in different ways, and Flynn in Interiors, who has moved away and has only returned for Arthur's wedding, actually does seem mostly happy--probably because she has escaped the rest of her miserable family. Come to think of it, Flynn's superficial cheerfulness in Interiors is similar to Trish's seemingly happy family life. I'm sorry to have rambled on about my take on Happiness when I should be praising your emphasizing very important aspects of the film. All of your observations about Bill, Allen, and Joy are directly on point; and your description gives your audience perhaps an even better taste of the movie than mine would. Thanks.
Thank you so much for taking your time to type out your very valid observations - no need to apologise about "rambling" (I'm basically a master at that so... I can relate). Apologies for getting back to you so late, I never got the notifications for most of the comments I'm reading through now. I really appreciate your kind words also, hope you're doing good these days!

+Dashen Grizzly Damn, I actually love some of the beats he produces - might ask him for a few just so I can listen to them and chill. But anyway, likewise with your content buddy! I'll keep it up as long as you will! ;D

This is one of two films that my friend and I will watch, but only if we are truly feeling at our lowest. This movie will make you realize that your life isn't actually that bad and it could be Way worse. The other is Bad Boy Bubby.
The 90s were dark times. Now I think a few of these social anxieties have been remedied. Escapism was once seen as something awful, but honestly being childish is better than being miserable. PSH character might have been able to break out of his self loathing if he got into D&D. You have no idea how big that game's community has become. He might have made some friends or more at best. At the least it would give him something to take his mind off of his depressing life. That's just one example. I got more. Edit: I wrote this 3 months ago and in that time I learned that there was something I overlooked. Things like self-acceptance and forgiveness is even more important than escapisim. That's not to say escapisim was the wrong choice, as I still think it's a healthier choice than...... well..... what happens in the movie. Most of the people are miserable because they can't accept or forgive themselves for their flaws while not doing well. I thought about it as I recently had to confront my own ego and flaws. It's hard, but I think the first step to happiness is to learn to accept who you are and come to terms with the fact that you're not perfect. Once you do that and let go of all that self loathing, things will feel just a bit more clear. The big problems you're facing, will seem a bit smaller and you might find strength that you didn't think you had before.
You can't be childish forever, life will slap you on the face sooner or later, better prepare yourself for it, but then again it's not like you have a choice.
I think the problem now is we want to not confront our insecurities or even try to empathize with people that are hideous inside, we rather stay in our little pond and be told how good we all are. "All work and no play makes jack a dull boy" and then Jack followed his family around with an axe because he blamed them for his problems and addiction. Sounds like a good life coach.
+Jamie Robb I really appreciate comments like this - it makes me feel fulfilled when I'm able to shed some new light on important works of art such as this one, so thank you!
Fantastic movie. I saw it when I was a kid believe it or not and had some disturbing memories from it and just recently found it again. And now realising what a great movie it is. Could be one of my favorites
I just felt bad for Joy. I would have broken up witht he guy at the start too. Who gets a present like that after ONE date??? A desperate creep, that's who. And as soon as he get's a single rejection, he acts like that. Like, boy, I cans ee why she broke up with the guy. Joy is just riddled with anxiety, worse than I was as a Teen. I just wanted to give her a hug. She needs one very long crying session and a hug.
Joy is a doormat that accepts poor treatment and thinks she's doing good but she doesn't give a crap about the strikers who just want some goddamn benefits. It's like people who go volunteer overseas to say they're helping people to feel good about themselves. She values a fantasy of a man over someone who'll actually treat her well. She's immature and naive. Honestly she reminds me of myself.
Exactly! You really pick those things up on a second watch. She's so relatable, and she really does want to do good, but her upbringing has shut her off from even realizing what "good" is. Joy is a far more complex and layered character than a lot of people seem to notice. Todd Solondz did an excellent job of humanizing her just enough to be likeable while not leaving out any of those despicable qualities you mentioned.
This movie gets my vote for one of the best endings in cinema. Absolutely brutal and laugh-out-loud funny at the same time. Absurd and also spot-on to the theme. The family dog is the one truly happy character in the film!
+Ramm28aDown Thank you! Unfortunately a few people that hate me made multiple fake accounts just to dislike all of my content... thankfully though the 'like to dislike' ratio isn't so bad on this video :P
When it comes to portraying themes of child abuse, people are going to reject it outright. I'm a recovered survivor, I was not triggered in the least. I was appropriately shocked. However, the humor (that many people will miss) kept me a safe distance. Context is everything. I compliment those two actors for the most difficult dialogue in that movie. That's pretty mature stuff.
+Bozhidar Ivanov Thank you, and yes! I absolutely love Depeche Mode, this specific track is called 'Broken', it's from their latest album - Delta Machine :D
Joy is ultimately self serving and selfish, imo. She lacks the self awareness and introspection to realise the impact she has on the people around her. She later states that her being burned by vlad "made her sympathise with the strike". She has reframed her wanting to abandon a supposedly egalitarian act through the lens of a different "sympathetic" perspective, not once acknowledging that what she does she does for herself. This puts her below the guy sticking stuff to walls with his own jizz, because he at least recognises that he is ultimately self serving, though also lacks the awareness to acknowledge the way he harms others. He talks to his therapist about his lack of confidence with women rather than his phone stalking. There is exactly one character in all of this that recognises the harm they cause, doesn't lie to themselves or others about it and even recognises that they are "sick". The one that performs the most harmful and reprehensible acts is also the only one to take personal responsibility for their behaviour. This is an indictment of blindly following ones desires without consideration for how it affects others. Joy is identical to her sisters in this regard. Shows no desire to move out of her parents home, the family has to hide the breakdown of the parents marriage from her for fear of how she would take it. Everything she does and says is about nobody but herself. Love this film, but I cannot agree with this analysis.
Thank you! Todd Solondz is one of my favourite directors - his work is definitely underrated. The song is called 'The Child Inside', by Depeche Mode :)
1:56 nice of you to point-out, but those of us who grew-up before the 90s or are over 40 or don’t have paper-thin feelings can well assume and tell when a MOVIE is promoting, condoning or encouraging something vs. merely portraying it.
"Journalists" wrote """"""""""serious"""""""""" articles about 'Joker' somehow promoting violence so uhh... yeah, even though this video essay is somewhat outdated in regards to my standards, that particular point maintains relevant.
Fantastic analysis! Great dive inside each character's individual story. What's the instrumental piano song that plays when your first talk about Joey? I'm sure I've heard it but I don't remember where.
Seems like an interesting movie but there's one problem; where the f*** can I find it? *Update - I forked out some cash, and bought a sealed copy, and opened it. Even when people warned me about it, I was still not prepared. I still don't know how to feel about it. It's a dumpster fire but the kind you just can't look away or stop thinking about. That is all.*
This movie mostly reminds me of American Beauty which is extremely similar Dylan Baker's character side of the plot. Anyways this movie and this review is great! Though I really dislike Helen, her part at the end (where she laughs about writing a poem about the murder lady made me hate her superficialness). I wish we got to see Joy and Allen together though
radchoco That part of the film also reminds me a little of AB too. My least favorite character in the movie is Trish. Her character is, well, she just annoys me. On a lighter note, my absolute favorite character in the movie is Johnny Grasso (Evan Silverberg), he may be known as the "girly" boy in the movie but I see him as just adorable. He isn't in the movie for too many scenes but I really love his innocence.
Okay I really need to say, Helen the author’s sister just infuriates but also intrigues me. Her voice is so monotone and condescending, and maybe she’s aware of how hollow of a person she is but she really more seems like she’s trying to ignore that fact and unintentionally pushes her views of herself onto other people, like how she talks to Trish about the men she sees and how they’re hollow and don’t see her for her, when in reality she’s the hollow one
I love this movie!! Too bad I can't really show it to too many people because it's not comfortable to watch! Also -spoiler warning- please. Great analysis.
+Cole Johnson-Vinion I love it too, man! When it comes to films being too "uncomfortable" to watch with friends... I have way too many of those in my collection. But yeah, sorry for not providing a spoiler warning in the actual video - I figured people would realise since it is an 'analysis' of the film :P
An amazing piece of cinema, the way Solonz manages to use paedophelia as a central tenet is brave and deftly and uncompromisingly handled, the conversation between the father and son about his raping of two boys is disgusting yet sadly emotional.Happiness is usually found when not consciously sought,it happens when its meant to happen and trying to make it happen usually ends in disaster..The world is full of sad, lonely and sick people and its tragic but true...I loved the film,,Not a date movie,Actually,,,I must disagree with myself,, it is,,,If i had brought a girl to see Happiness and she had liked it i would know i can talk to her about anything real,, It sticks with you once viewed and makes you question what is happiness,is it an aitered state,is it truly attainable,Is it perversion,is it just social acting to imagine we can all fit neatly in.? We cant,,,Im bi polar so maybe not a great commentatorcommentator but it really spoke to me.All art is subjective as the cliche goes.
I was intrigued when I first watched it, but could not bring myself to watch it again. To call this film a comedy is pretty sick. It's disturbing and unsettling but yet somehow I was compelled to watch it. This film is also the reason I can't listen to Air Supply
I don't think Joy is full of positive energy AT ALL; I think she is morbidly insecure, and, tries to put up a brave front to the world. she is superficially sweet, but, really does not know how to read people.
I found the full thing for free on Facebook believe it or not. If you have an account just type Happiness Todd Solondz into the Facebook search engine, and it should pop up under the videos section.
The video quality is better than any copy of Happiness I could get ahold of. Where did you find this footage? Is it really straight from the DVD? It looks way better than mine.
This movie was so grounded that it was disturbing and I never finished it. Baker's character is everywhere in real life. The boyfriend. The friendly neighbor. The teacher. Who is wearing a mask? Do you know who you're laying with?
Wait, a minute... Kristina, had, already told him, that she hates sex, before, he got into bed with her; so, one could argue, that his getting into bed fully clothed, is as much an act of compassion; as it is, an act of fear of sex on his part.

I never saw Cuties, but what did they do to the kids? Is there a video on YT about it?
I couldn't stop laughing to the final scene. That was just a cherry on top of the cake.
Apatia fucking same
I genuinely had to cover my eyes at the last scene, fucking nasty 😩
Very interesting review with some great points, but I guess 1 kid does end up happy by the end (The kid who finally ejaculates haha)
It's an amazing movie as a character study for sure, but next time you watch it, approach it as a comedy.
Indeed, I was laughing so hard on some of Dylan Baker's scenes.. as well as Mr. Hoffman's XD
I think the guy just realized he's an a******. He's the problem in his life. You can try to push everybody away, but you might be still miserable.
Drew Russell where can I watch the full movie ?
Incredibly brave performance by Dylan Baker. Imagine taking on this role with the knowledge that you may be mistaken for a pedophile, rather than an actor portraying a pedophile, or typecast in the industry. Philip Seymour Hoffman of course dares to go there. May be the two most courageous performances I've seen on celluloid. Thanks for this thoughtful review, Antoni.
The character of Joy I can relate to in my weakest moments.
I literally don’t know if a liked this movie or not
Exactly my thoughts at the moment after finishing the film.
The actress who played Joy did a PHENOMENAL job. I was scared she was going to snap at any second...
She is great! I loved seeing her in the return of Twin Peaks also :)
for some reason bill's story interests me a lot. Thinking about how this happens and how someone go be this way. How any random normal person is actually a monster
Because it is shocking that this very sick man is a psychiatrist, in a job where he is supposed to be helping people, when he is the worst kind of sick... it is ironic.
Hey man, you do a FANTASTIC job with editing. You definitely earned yourself a sub.

I had the same thought! They do share similar features, Hoffman and Damon
There's nothing wrong with Matt Damien's acting. However, Philip Seymour Hoffman was a step above most. I think that's why the performance came off so genuine.

How did you do the drawing exactly like the poster? Also, you should do more reviews
That dinner scene with the family was just, so.... depressing.
This film js a masterpiece in Comedy. Actually making something funny out of tragedy is a rare gift
A detail I found interesting is that both Alan and Christina have hats on their walls.
Yes ! ! !
I noticed that also.
It was a subtle way to show that they were alike somehow.
Happiness, it's only a teardrop away - Evil Singing Fairy
3:15 Okay, I hear that House background soundtrack ;)
Thanks.

@@linkinpark4everize Oh I disagree. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. There's no point in being an adult if you can't be childish.
@@Ubermensch9240 You can be childish sometimes, we all can, will and have been. Just beware that life can't be spent that way entirely.
@@Gman941 Also because he couldn't accept himself for who he was. A troubled man with writer's block and an alcohol addiction.

Fantastic movie. I saw it when I was a kid believe it or not and had some disturbing memories from it and just recently found it again. And now realising what a great movie it is. Could be one of my favorites
Todd Solondz phenomenol director, very underrated
I just felt bad for Joy.
I would have broken up witht he guy at the start too.
Who gets a present like that after ONE date???
A desperate creep, that's who. And as soon as he get's a single rejection, he acts like that. Like, boy, I cans ee why she broke up with the guy.
Joy is just riddled with anxiety, worse than I was as a Teen. I just wanted to give her a hug. She needs one very long crying session and a hug.
because im champagne and your shit! -BOSS
can we talk about how great actor Phil was??? It's sad knowing that he could've done more masterpieces, RIP
I can always talk about that... Philip Seymour Hoffman is my favourite actor and I mourn him as I would a family member.
Is a good review film. I don't understand so many negatives.
Great video, you should do more of these, I hope your channel gains more subs because you do deserve it and have the potential.
+Yero Thank you very much! People like you just give me more motivation to create more content! :D

Great review! What's that song from 5:20 onwards? Depeche Mode?
I mostly agree actually! Views tend to change over time... but I still love this film all the same, if not more :)
I was shocked how disturbing this movies was. I never expected a movie like this to give me nightmares.

I bought it sealed too just before making this video - good choice of course but I wish it would come out on Blu-Ray already :(
This movie mostly reminds me of American Beauty which is extremely similar Dylan Baker's character side of the plot.
The director made a loose sequel to the movie called Life During Wartime. Same characters but different actors.
