i think of the tiers of parts as follows Class A: Fighters - small, quick, manuverable (hit and run tactics) Class B: Cruisers - bit bigger, crewed, more fire power, More shield, Slower (can take flak from weaker targets while pursuing a stronger target) Class C: battleship/freighter - fully staffed, Max fire Power, Max Shield, Loads of cargo space, cumbersome and slow. (gung ho tactics)
I'm only running it with 4 (3 + Sarah's a freebie), and I'm pretty sure the max you can have (no matter the ship) is 8. Where that number comes from is the Ares cockpit (8 all by itself) and a single Control Station (4). I'll look up the specific weapons when I get a chance (not in a place to do it right now), but the short of it is 6x the Vanguard particle cannons, 4 EMPs, and 4 missile launchers.

I'd add class B and C parts have more health. Maybe they are going for class C is slower but durable.
How on Earth were you able to get a crew of 12 on that ship? What weapons are you using?
