Starsector at the end of the video, nice! I recommend anybody to check it out. The gameplay is really well done, with very unique gameplay for some ships and the mod community is fantastic! Some ships from mod are so nicely made.
Starsector is absolutely amazing, don't sleep on it if you like space sims. My friends and I frequently call it mount & blade in space. You basically build your "army" of highly customizable ships, command them with an RTS style command screen, and can also fly one yourself in ARPG combat if you so choose (I know some people like to just use the tactical menu and watch the AI fly their capital ship. Perfectly valid way of playing.) The combat takes a lot of skill, trading takes a lot of paying attention, exploration is extremely satisfying, colony building is really neat, the writing in the story is captivating (story isn't finished yet, but as of currently has a satisfying "ending" cutoff to it) the dev frequently posts on the dev blog and is currently working on a big QoL update and UX overhaul.
This. "Mount&Blade in space" is a perfect first approach description for Starsector. Focus on simple in basic controls, but complex in its mechanics combat, blurred line between fighting personally and leading a fleet, possibility of being a freelance savager, pirate, or establishing and managing your own worlds. It is amazing.
I have to say thank you. I was actually looking for some inspiration today, and I am a 40 years space simulation veteran (Elite 84). So I surfed around here today - and I ended up with 900 videos discussing the difference between Starfield and Elite or NMS for the thousands time. You are the first video in the 2 days I have been surfing, which offers something very different. Excellent! Thanks for your effort and your creativity and not to ruminate the same content.
@@easilydistractedgames Reentry - never heard of it and I really like the realistic NASA look. Will check it out. Some others I already knew - Starsector for example -maybe Liberation, but I believe I've played this before, not sure though.

Hellion was a very interesting game, sadly dead and removed from the Steam store. Avorion, Flight of Nova, Ostranauts, Heat Signature, Space Pirates and Zombies, Space Run, Heavenly Bodies, Redshirt, Nimbatus, Rings of Saturn, Approaching Infinity, and Solar 2 are games that could be also interesting to explore and play. Some have been mentioned in the previous video but I think it's still interesting to list them here as other relatively hidden gems.
Hellion was a game of frustration, bugs and more frustration.... Get to a point... leave the game... Re enter the game and be in space and dying. You never know when it will happen, you load the game... You could be 1 hr into a new game or 30 hours in.
Ostranauts is another great one, currently early access and it’s from the devs of Neo scavenger. You (currently) start in a shipyard built on and around a huge asteroid and your goal is to just tear shit down, upgrade your own ship (and pay off your huge debt depending on what ship you start with) Very fun, would heavily recommend it.
Thanks for bringing attention. I thought that House of the Dying Sun might be on the list. It’s a really excellent space combat game in the vein of tie fighter with light rts elements.
Starship Evo is the most in depth ship builder i ever play, it lacks the physics of Space Engineers, and the exploration side of Empyreon. But it does compensate for the highly malleable crafting system with whapping 32 sizes of blocks. That means you could literally build from small devices like handheld weapons to massive space stations. The base blocks are also stretchable, meaning you can create a lot of forms by just stretching blocks. Steam Workshop also has tons of everything from vehicles, guns, ships of al sizes, space stations....
@3:44 Tin Can looks nice; it is what I'm looking for; like the movie Critters 4 (1992), in space, I enjoyed, the checking of seals and resource reporting, nice ship for the time, but didn't care much for the rest of the movie. It took 32 years but hey, it's here :) @13:35 Tacoma, also looks interesting @14:30 Stationeers also interesting
Star trucker is another new space game I think we should keep our eye on. euro truck simulator in space with tin can systems management. It's pretty new so it's yet to fill itself out but there's a good offering to begin with.
Hidden gems are great. But it would be nice to also have a short/quick list of the well known great games of the genre. In case we are missing on any of them. It also lets us know what great games you know, and if your advice would be any good. For example when you mentioned freelancer on a side comment, that was a "Yep, this guy knows the genre." At the start or end of the video, or even in the comment, a quick/short list would do. Or even another video.
Exogate seems to me like a combination of Evil Genius and Stargate. I currently play X4 Foundations a lot, i got back into it a few weeks ago and it´s just as good as it was before. Thanks to the latest changes, possibly better even, though the latest DLC didn´t affect the Sandbox game much, at least beyond some sensible quality of life UI improvements.
I cannot emphasize enough how incredibly good starsector is. I have sunk so many hours, and the modding support allows for so much additional replayability.

I will just add one more: Space Engineers don't know if it qualifies as a unknown game, but i believe it deserves more players xD (nvm. he mentioned it on the side)
Star Sector is the game I have wanted for years. Since the original Space Pirates Vs Zombies made 2D space-combat so much fun to me. So satisfying to work on ships and upgrades and explore. For 15 bucks it makes triple A 60 dollar games look pathetic. Yes, SP vs Z 2 stank, I know.
2 I would highly suggest looking into if you enjoy these types of games. Empyrion - Galactic Survival Like space engineers but not as clunky building mechanics, quite still believeable physics and space combat, massive planets, and the ability to make some absolutely HUGE ships with varied functions. Already has several factions in it, including several factions are on just like locals or natives on planets. Is randomly generated overall. Bit hard on your hardware as its not super optimized but I like it more than Space Engineers any day of the week. Final Upgrade You are an AI that got one task. Find the "Final Star" and the "final upgrade" and meanwhile, colonize, exploit and assist. Its a RTS with building mechanics similar to something like Rimworld, as in you build in grid shapes. Really really fun and EXTREMELY easy to get into on the lower settings. But gets a lot harder on the higher settings as the colonies start needing more complex things and can't produce items if not satisfied. Its really the sort of best blend if you ask me of "casual easy feeling" with "Hostile hardcore strategic gameplay" if you wanna.
