Fantastic video. I had the chance to own 18 Grand America, new for 3 years. Now I own a new Goldwing DCT Tour. I will tell you both, all of my experiences with both and riding for 35 years. Hands down to the Goldwing. None of them is perfect, but the wing is the best bike I have ever owned....period. Superbly comfortable even for a tall rider, fast enough for me in Soprt or Tour Modes, extreamly reliable. Never saw the dealer till now even for a tiny problem. Parts are cheaper, more available, easy to work on and the bottom line is...the wing can go to the moon and back and you will still smile. The DCT is magical, smart transmission.

Goldwing for me even though I prefer the look the handling and the ground clearance of the bmw. Honda reliability is hard to beat. If I'm spending that much on a bike I don't want to worry about things breaking and having to fork out more.
Flat six engine on a bike...you gotta love that. Some ppl complain about the top speed being only 112mph but I wouldn't care. No need to go any faster on a motorbike.
Ahoy.. I have the Wing and find it very comfortable, the Beemer not so. The DCT is great, the screen is amazing, the reverse and creep are brilliant. For me the Wing is perfect, but it is subjective.. I look forward to part 2 and your final verdicts. Stay safe...
@@slobodangligorijevic4385 I agree. The K1600b may be better looking but the Goldwing is more comfortable. Comfort wins for me. It's crazy how some people want touring bikes to perform like sports bikes. ua-cam.com/video/Ynz53fllFvY/v-deo.html
I’ve owned the Goldwing and have the K1600. I prefer the the K1600 because of the performance, although I prefer the GTL. Thing is, when I bought a GS and rode them back to back, I decided I needed to keep the K1600. After I put a stage 2 kit and full exhaust system, I found I never toured on the K1600 any more because the lighter GS was just as fast, much more comfy with less bend in the leg, and the wind protection was better as it wasn’t pushing my back forward and I wasn’t looking through the screen. Plus, I was able to explore any road while touring and a water crossing doesn’t force me to turn around.
Bemoto, are awesome 👌 Been with them now 5yr and each year my policy goes down ( like it should with now claims ) And Santa’s just brought me a lovely new gen3 1290r , rang them up and changed my policy, 5 min phone call, no charges to my policy and NO ADMIN charges !!!! Brilliant 👌 best insurance company by far 👍🏼
I love K1600B because not too big,not small, just size for me. Easy to control at small shop like convini-store. Both Goldwing and K1600 have plenty of torque and speed no Complaints.
I am lucky enough to have a K1600 GTL; slightly older version pre LCD & reverse gear, it's a heavy bike however anything over 5 miles an hour and the weight disappears. Take the top box off & the side bags if you want, best thing in my opinion is that inline 6 engine sounds like an F1 car if you open it up, that never gets old. Merry Christmas gents😃
Excellent video. Good to see the Beemer is so safe you don't need to de-ice the mirrors! 🙂 I have the exact same Goldwing and agree with most of what you have concluded. I haven't ridden the BMW but the more planted feeling as far as handing will be the low down engine weight of the 1800 boxer, which I actually prefer than a more top heavy balance. I think you will find the sport mode if used a bit more turns the GW into a different bike as far as response goes. Will look forward to episode 2!
Love my K1600gt done just under 7k this year on 3 euro trips, -20c last March over spanish pyrenees keis heated clothing neck to toes heaven, 34mpg @ 110mph cruise control on, and 68mpg at 50mph 55mph through Switzerland chilling out . Engine pulls at 9mph in 2nd gear at 800rpm no chugging on greasy wet banked hairpin bends on stelvio pass. Awesome bike, and when revving out sounds identical to M3 E46.
Cheers from Texas. Great compare. I've got a 2023 GW arriving in a few months. I've done a lot of research on both and your findings are spot on with what I've read. Side note, bit of a split-second freakout every time a car passes you guys on the right :) Be safe on those cold wet road friends.
A bike can feel more agile by having its CoG higher because it has a tendency to want to tip itself over more readily, especially noticeable once you start gaining speed. Lower CoG would keep the bike stable but may feel harder to lean over once moving. Bit like how a bus keeps its mass down low. Enjoyed the vid, Chopsy 👍🏻
Like I said before, I’m not the target buyer for bikes like this, but I’d choose the Honda over the BMW. The DCT transmission is perfect for a bike like that, just cruise along effortlessly covering huge distances without having to change gear. You could set the cruise control and have a picnic while cruising up the motorway 😂
The Gold Wing is available with either the DCT manual or the traditional manual, the very late model "bagger" version of the Wing has been changed to only be available with the DCT though, with the full kitted Gold Wing you can still get either traditional or DCT....but if you want the bagger version of the Wing, you need to purchase a slightly older one before they restricted it to DCT manual only....but let's be honest, the DCT is a manual, you just don't have the hand clutch and no foot shifter....but on a Wing, I really don't feel like you're missing out without a hand clutch, and in reality, especially if you're doing big miles, it's probably a better choice with the DCT.
I think the Goldwing and the k1600 Grand America would of been a closer comparison. At least if you were looking for a backrest for the passenger, you'd have a better comparison. Goldwing would still be more comfortable. I have the k1600b strictly for the performance aspect, I did purchase an aftermarket backrest. Enjoyable video, thanks for sharing!
Usually don’t go for these bagger review/comparisons, but you two did great. It was entertaining with just the right amount of info and banter. And that pillion segment was brilliant, an absolute riot, had me a right chuckle😂 Thank you👏
For me the DCT is a game changer especially for a bike like that, and for that reason alone the 6th gen Goldwing is untouchable. Where I live most people drive automatics, there’s no filtering allowed so an automatic bike would make a lot of sense. My car and current bike are manual but I gotta admit if I’m just commuting to work and back, in traffic a DCT would make a helluva sense. You still get the bike experience but you don’t have to use brain power to shift, you can “shift” that portion of your brain processing for added safety on the road
Great video guys and very brave going out at 0 degrees. I really like the reviews when you are both out together as the banter between you is great the alternative views when changing bikes also very interesting. I have tried both I think the DCT takes some getting used too and if you're over 6ft 3in then the wind blast from the smaller screen on the bagger is pretty bad. However I'm told this can be sorted by replacing it with the full touring screen. Keep up the good work andvlok forward to the next instalments.
Great vid..well edited too ...love both bikes but GW was over my budget ..bought a 18 plate k1600b just over a year ago and love it...who needs auto with that much torque and quickshifter...can almost ride everywhere in 6th. Merry Christmas and looking forward to the next instalment .
Great summary and very fair. Just bought an RT1250. The GW or K16 are the bikes you want to get there with, but the R1250RT will be the one you want when you do get there!
Excellent vid guys, very enjoyable & looking forward to the next one! I guess at the end of the day these are the ultimate touring bikes & the Goldwing is purpose built & does what they're made to do a bit better all-round. The BMW is a bit more dynamic maybe but somewhat comprised as a result. When it comes to purely the design brief, it looks like Honda have nailed it.
I’ve owned BMW’s 40 years & being a Millwright I do all my own maintenance. I could not afford BMW service @ the dealer. I feel the GW for that main reason is the way to go all things considered
I've owned a Kz1300, zg1300, two cbx-6, benelli sei and had my heart broken when suzuki didn't make me a stratosphere six back in 2006. If it has six cylinders I want one including the Laverda V6 and the way out of my league Horex V6's that are just too pricey for my little budget. There is however no room in the garage for Honda's Goldwing in any engine size. I'd be more likely to buy a honda civic. There is a new bike in my sights and it is even bigger and more amazing than anything currently available from any of the old guard manufacturers. The Great Wall Motor Company makes the Souo S2000GL boxer 8 with a 2000cc engine. It also comes in a sport touring, bagger and cruiser variant so there's something for everyone. Complain about 'made in china' all you want but most of the parts for all your bikes are from south east asia now so what's your point? Even HDI sources out of thailand and they have a plant in China (the one in India closed or rebadged) so they are as american as a sushi roll now. Benelli hasn't revamped the old 750/900 seis line even though they are now made in China as well (HQ in Italy). Laverda died off years ago and everyone else seems content with jumbo V-twins so that's a big no from me. Souo will be priced lower (cheap labour, parts, Yuan) so there's a plus and it is as pretty as anything anyone else is making so you can't say it is as ugly as a Polaris Victory. At least it doesn't have a three wheeler in the line-up as so many boomers can't hold their bikes up anymore and are switching/converting to something that won't fall over when their plastic knees collapse. Your money - you decide... ua-cam.com/video/k-Izsq_8Pgg/v-deo.html
Great to see these two in direct comparison like this, top job 👍 …. On your chilly morning start I realised one thing these bikes need… heated mirrors and screen!! 😆
I'll be ordering a new GW next month for a few reasons, It's a Honda so I won't need to bear the arrogance of a BMW dealer, there are some great deals to be had on new models and of course the DCT which I've had on 2 Africa Twins in the last 3 years and it's just brilliant.
Feedback without harshness, that says it all about GW. The Bm’R is a stiffer ride, focused handling, etc., it’s a big sport bike. Chopsy was born with a spark plug in his hand so I’ll bet he’s going for the Bm’R.
Nice video. Having fun on the ride , in the cold . Enjoyed watching from my non motorised couch . Looking forward to Part 2 . Merry Christmas everyone 🎄
Having had the 2022 Tour that top box is needed cause thats where you will put your crash helmets. I pretty much only ever used the topbox to store stuff the side boxes are pretty much useless.Plus you get a center stand and an option for the manual gearbox.
Would love to have a K1600, but the size and weight defeats the whole purpose of a motorcycle as soon as it enters congested traffic... So I think I'll stick to my 2021 Husky 701 SM. :D
The Goldwing is actually slimmer than a GS, Africa Twin (see ManCaveMoto’s review for the exact dimensions which he lists). I can filter easily on mine as it is so stable at low speed, and getting a foot down quickly is also safer given the low seat height.
Came from an MT-10 to the Goldwing bagger and love it. its quick enough and handles far better than it should but its the all day comfort im most enjoying. Off to the Ring for a few laps in June, should be interesting.
I have to agree with Greg, being a pillion is terrifying 🏍😱!!! Great “real world” test in the cold 👍. I’ll ride on dry pavement down to about -4C, but it’s with heated grips, hand guards, electric vest, and so many layers of clothes I can’t clap my hands 😆.
Great video guys I had a test on both the wing and BMW also on the Grand America. The gm ordered right away 22 plate picked up July this year what done it for me was the engine and the brakes also comfort and the tech
One thing I've noticed right away is that you are able you use those big bikes at all in temps that low and feel confident. There's no way I would have thought that they would be good winter bikes. I've never ridden one but I'm edging towards the Goldie, the sound, gear box and weather protection. I don't like the sons of anarchy handles bars on the bmw. The two of them on a track day? 😉🤔
I have both bikes. BMW more fun it’s faster however not so great in the wind. For that reason the Goldwing wins. DCT makes 2 up riding much easier also. I have the Goldwing manual and DCT have the grand America and the B. Goldwing better on long trips and wind the B is better for speed and agility as long as the winds are reasonable
Never ridden a gold wing but done South of France to Farnham in one day on the 2016 K1600. That engine is turbine like, super smooth linear power with a proper turn of speed. Weather protection is very good but I did still get a bit of weird buffering (at 6’2) and couldn’t get the screen in a decent position.. which I did find disappointing. Toyed with the idea as a second motor, even putting a deposit down at BMW only to realise the practicalities/size and lack of garage space was problem.. I think if you’ve got the space and £ for a serious touring bike you can’t go far wrong.
Happy holidays guys For me id spunk the money on a new phantom gixxer thou and a fully loaded Tmax TechMax with a full akra, ohlins and some gilles ,Malossi parts. Best of both worlds. Both are comfortable, agile. Even 2up 😉👍
Hats off to yous boys big heavy bikes for the cold damp conditions 😮😮😮 definitely changed my opinion on these big touring bikes !!! They still get around quickly . Be good to see you s out in better weather a wee tour for a few days .👍 all the best over the festive seasons to you all .Keep it up chopsy / Greg 😁
lost me where you said the original goldwing was massive. The 79 Gl1000 was a GT bike that eventually turned into the gl1800 monstrosity, The new ones are smaller but lack the things that made the old 1800 king, big luggage, big gas tank (not enough mileage though. 20L tank on a touring bike is ridiculous.
“I can’t feel you!” “Are you in?” “I’m in, it doesn’t feel anywhere near as comforting!” “Please don’t…….no, no John, don’t, please don’t!” The internet has ruined me 😂
The wing being a boxer motor has a lower center of gravity than the inline 6, not much but noticeable, both are super smooth under stressed motors, pegs are to far back on beemer, granted they need be if your going to sport tour . I find the beamer better looking, both are great bikes for eating up the miles, ride and decide.
Sold my K1600, it was great for long distance but poor for low speed exploring when I got there, weight and manoeuvrability. It overheated in Sardinia and it lost my confidence in its reliability.
The bummer is Honda doesn’t offer the GW non tour with a manual transmission. That’s why I bought the GW tour model. I’ve owned both bikes you’re testing, both are great bikes but in different ways.
Ok, guys, the winner has to be the Can-Am Spyder RT Limited, the safest motorcycle on the road, look them up, 49 gallons of storage, yes, 49 gallons of storage, and see how they are equipped, I've ridden for 50-plus years, and never laid down a bike. And now it is time to move into what motorcycles should be from all manufacturers! There safer in every way you can think of... the numbers and facts don't lie. and no I don't work for Can-Am. Just look them up and watch the videos on youtube, make up your own mind. see what I've seen.
Chopsy, you two are so engaging together! Brilliant double play! AND ... the pillion comparison :) Well done. I'll stick to the R1200RT for me and the wife, the top box helps too. Although the older style gear shifts are a bit clunkier than the K1600 methinks. Thanks to Greg too, for his respected experience and thoughtful comments. - VIZ comment of K1600-GTL for pillion on the BMW.
Enjoyed the vid Chops..Goldie is the proven one imho..merry Xmas and all the best to you and yours for 2023..come on people let’s get chops over the 100k subs line!
Great instalment.... Couple of questions from me. What screen is on the GW. Is it the standard one or the touring one do you know? When is second part?
Great review as always J' - I too suffer from DCT syndrome when I crack on the H2 SesX - my Best friend owns the BMW and we swap from time to time and its fun to watch him forget how to clutch as well' Both stellar Bike's - unfortunately there can only be one Grand Tourer in my Tejas Garage
You ripping on the bmw with Greg screaming “no, no” 😂. I have tried the bmw k1600b. Definitely considering it as my next bike. But i should really try the Goldwing. Is that still your top choice? By the way great moto2 video. I have her in the yellow. Phenomenal bike.
Are you looking over the top of the screen on the goldwing chops? On the pov view it looks like you're looking straight through it, must be distracting with the summer insects splatting on it if that's the case.
As its electric and can stop anywhere you can raise and lower at will. Yes all the way up I'm looking through it but didn't have any distortion issues.
Going to probably do a whole separate video on the hovercraft as was so interesting and seems wrong to chop it down to 5 minutes. But yes in the next vid too 👍
Brilliant series. Top marks to both Chops & Greg on a job well done… One of these bikes may well be in my future when I step up from my R1250RT. Looking forward to the next instalment. 👍

Nice ones chops, cup o tea, wee vid to watch.
Merry Christmas everyone. ❄️🍻
Love a bmw... but.. wing all day. 👍😁 Happy Christmas 🎄
Great vid, personally I’d have thought the GTL would have been a better choice to compare.
Nice video. Having fun on the ride , in the cold . Enjoyed watching from my non motorised couch . Looking forward to Part 2 . Merry Christmas everyone 🎄
Merry Christmas you two, have a good one. Really enjoy your videos, take care. 😊😊😊
A great comparison.Looking forward to part two and the conclusion.Thanks.
Having had the 2022 Tour that top box is needed cause thats where you will put your crash helmets. I pretty much only ever used the topbox to store stuff the side boxes are pretty much useless.Plus you get a center stand and an option for the manual gearbox.
Hand-Baggers at Dawn. Almost literally.
Genius comment!
@@Bemoto 🤣
Haha might have to rename the video 😆👍
Would love to have a K1600, but the size and weight defeats the whole purpose of a motorcycle as soon as it enters congested traffic... So I think I'll stick to my 2021 Husky 701 SM. :D
The Goldwing is actually slimmer than a GS, Africa Twin (see ManCaveMoto’s review for the exact dimensions which he lists). I can filter easily on mine as it is so stable at low speed, and getting a foot down quickly is also safer given the low seat height.
When there is frost on the windscreen I think I might opt for the rain or cold weather riding pants over the jeans! The Wing is a legend!
Informative and amusing, cheers guys, merry Xmas! 👏👍😀
Great video guys I had a test on both the wing and BMW also on the Grand America. The gm ordered right away 22 plate picked up July this year what done it for me was the engine and the brakes also comfort and the tech
Hope Bemoto continues to support Chops and his channel 👍
excellent comparison gents. Very helpful.
Great review chops and Greg.... definitely looking between these behemoths for me and the better half.. looking forward to the next episode.... 😁👌
Yes that was a surprise for me too! Brilliant all year round bikes 👍
The engine is a masterpiece in the k1600 its fabulous 👌
@@LambChopRides it’s an engineering masterpiece… effortless!
Nice run up the A32, Gents. Cracking vid. 👍
Happy holidays guys
For me id spunk the money on a new phantom gixxer thou and a fully loaded Tmax TechMax with a full akra, ohlins and some gilles ,Malossi parts.
Best of both worlds.
Both are comfortable, agile.
Even 2up
😉👍
Hats off to yous boys big heavy bikes for the cold damp conditions 😮😮😮 definitely changed my opinion on these big touring bikes !!! They still get around quickly . Be good to see you s out in better weather a wee tour for a few days .👍 all the best over the festive seasons to you all .Keep it up chopsy / Greg 😁
Thanks Wattie 👍
A fun review that just goes to show that you need to ride everything before buying. At my age I would have shat myself in the beemer pillion.
Greg shi**ing himself on the back was hilarious! Can't wait for the next instalment. ❤️ the IOW and the hover! 👍 Oh and Merry Christmas Chopsy!
Merry Christmas buddy 👍
Brilliant series. I can't wait for the next episode!
"I can feel you behind" oooer! Great video boys👍
Those 2 are made for hyper miles, I'd probably go for the Goldwing if I wanted one.
lost me where you said the original goldwing was massive. The 79 Gl1000 was a GT bike that eventually turned into the gl1800 monstrosity, The new ones are smaller but lack the things that made the old 1800 king, big luggage, big gas tank (not enough mileage though. 20L tank on a touring bike is ridiculous.
If you like feet forward and DCT, try the X-ADV love love love mine.
“I can’t feel you!”
“Are you in?”
“I’m in, it doesn’t feel anywhere near as comforting!”
“Please don’t…….no, no John, don’t, please don’t!”
The internet has ruined me 😂
The wing being a boxer motor has a lower center of gravity than the inline 6, not much but noticeable, both are super smooth under stressed motors, pegs are to far back on beemer, granted they need be if your going to sport tour . I find the beamer better looking, both are great bikes for eating up the miles, ride and decide.
Two bikes I will probably never own but really enjoyed the video keep up the good work guys
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Sold my K1600, it was great for long distance but poor for low speed exploring when I got there, weight and manoeuvrability.
Yes, the best bike I've ever owned!!!
Good banter and interesting 'takes', well done especially in those temperatures!
Thanks very much Graeme 😁👍
Enjoyed the vid Chops..Goldie is the proven one imho..merry Xmas and all the best to you and yours for 2023..come on people let’s get chops over the 100k subs line!
Thanks Alan merry Christmas buddy 👍
Great video. The video quality is impeccable! Well done guys!
Glad you enjoyed it! 👍
Great instalment.... Couple of questions from me. What screen is on the GW. Is it the standard one or the touring one do you know? When is second part?
It's the larger touring screen David I believe 👍 part two after Christmas
Hi chopse, happy Christmas and New year see you in the new year and your vids to come
Great video thanks for posting and thanks to Bemoto!
Picture quilty is better than the telly look forward to part 2
You ripping on the bmw with Greg screaming “no, no” 😂. I have tried the bmw k1600b. Definitely considering it as my next bike. But i should really try the Goldwing. Is that still your top choice? By the way great moto2 video. I have her in the yellow. Phenomenal bike.
Like directly after the intro. Such good vibes!
Thank you 🙌
honda for older guys bmw for younger 😊
Are you looking over the top of the screen on the goldwing chops?
On the pov view it looks like you're looking straight through it, must be distracting with the summer insects splatting on it if that's the case.
As its electric and can stop anywhere you can raise and lower at will. Yes all the way up I'm looking through it but didn't have any distortion issues.
GREAT video 🏆
Have a merry and good one !
Can’t wait for the next episode, wow hovercraft cockpit!
Going to probably do a whole separate video on the hovercraft as was so interesting and seems wrong to chop it down to 5 minutes. But yes in the next vid too 👍
@@LambChopRides Can't wait for that - Thanks John👍🎄
BMW should make a K800 version, love the smooth inline-six.
Brilliant series. Top marks to both Chops & Greg on a job well done… One of these bikes may well be in my future when I step up from my R1250RT. Looking forward to the next instalment. 👍
Thanks Stuart 👍
😂😂😂 great review gents had to subscribe salute!
Brilliant. Really enjoyed that chaps. 🥃
You could smoke a pipe at 80mph on the K1600GT, at least on the one with the full size screen.
Reliability is extremely important for daily use and long distance travel so Honda wins.
