  • Last month we did the BMW K1600 B vs the Honda Goldwing test as even though we preferred the Goldwing for outright touring the BMW was a better all in one motorcycle. Today its time to return the K1600 to BMW but it would be rude not to go for one more thrashings!!

I had 2 K1600's for few years. yes, enjoyed them, yes fast machines, yes shift assist is wonderful, yes good looking bikes. But, be warn about issues with these engines as they get older. Not too many dealers in the USA and if you find one, always far away. Very hard to work on, sometimes dealers don't have parts in stock and you will need to wait. Labor is expensive !!!! The Grand America had issues pulling to the left a bit. High speeds rides next to or behind trucks, this bike suffers from dirty air bangs and you DO FEEL it. Plenty of electrical issues with the Bosch sensors. I will never own a K again. I gave BMW a change twice and done. Bought a new Goldwing DCT Tour and will never go back.

good review. I tried a 2023 K16 GTL and 2 things I didn't like 1: Bike stalls at startup ??? 160HP ?, I couldn't beleive that, you really have to rev it up. my 2019 FJR never did that and shift like butter
2: the clunky gear change in lower gears, sounded like trouble to come ... BUT WoW, what a nice bike once you're moving :)
tried the GW DCT and it will be my next bike.

Hi Lamb chop, I had a GTLE K1600 and I agree, great bike. 6 cylinders are the optimum amount of cylinders for engine ballance, then you get the v4, v6, v8 and v12 and of course the w12 and 16.

My 6 cylinder experience is from a 1986 Kawasaki 1300 6Cyl EFI (straight 6, shaft drive). I got a job at a bike dealer, where the owner suggested i buy it. It was the silky smoothest thing I’ve ridden!! I’d buy one again. In fact i owned it for 2 years and was offered thousands more than i paid for it (30% more) btw it gave most sport bikes a run for their money, seeing 120kmh in first gear !!

I bought a GT last year and yes, the weight is an issue at standstill, when pushing around, low manoeuvring etc. However, the enjoyment from everything else is quite an experience. It isn't a 'pop to the shops' type of bike, through the tunnel or ferry, nail it from Calais to.....and enjoy 🙂

    Hope this helps❤
inline six’s inherent smoothness is a function of its layout. When a piston reaches top or bottom dead center, the sudden direction change produces a rocking imbalance at one side of the engine block. In a straight-six, pistons at the front and back of the engine mirror each other’s movement, and these primary forces are ineffective. So, too, are the secondary forces created by pistons moving faster at the tops of their travel than the bottoms.

I had a 2015 GTL. Then sold it for a Honda DCT. I missed the 1600 when ever I rode the bike like a sport tour. The GW is an easier passenger bike but the BMW humiliation campaign when I rode it with my buddies sport bikes was a triumph. It had many comments from riding buddies surprised to see me in their mirrors on back road jaunts. The confidence of the BMW is surprising. The GT is the one to get. Much more sporty.

great bike, with a wet weight of 358 kg. With a rider like us (120 kg, naked)), gear and a bit of luggage, you're at 500 kg easy, so only 60 kg left for the pillion with gear.
And getting more then 500 kg in motion with 180 Nm torques makes for a great tyre-muncher. I got a friend who uses this thing for his commute and he gets about 6 to 7000 kms out of a set of Michelins.

A straight six has perfect primary and secondary balance. An inline 3 also has perfect primary and secondary balance, but it has a rocker. The straight six balances this rocker by joining two three cylinder engines. It does make them relatively weak around the central bearing.
I've got a K1600GTL. The engine is fab, but as you've found out, easy to stall. You can really throw the bike around. The gearbox really lets the side down - awful, as is the shaft dive which is clunky. MSF has just done a review on it and was intimidated by the weight. I'm smaller than him and have no problems and I'm no hero rider, but then some people never get on with big heavy bikes.
In fact I found the seat too low, and when I raised it, the bike was far more comfortable.

Great review Chopsy, having owned the k16 for a couple of years I found that it could stall every now and again, then you would tend to over rev next stop! That's the only bad thing I could say about it.
I agree it is a rocket ship for the size! it would be good to see a summer review as the k16 is better than you would think in the twisties and the 6 cylinder scream coming out of a bend is to die for!

You nailed the biggest problem. Throttle is so sensitive that it takes practice to not over rev leaving a stoplight. It’s even worse to stall.
Friction zone on the clutch is very small as well.
Perhaps if the increased idol when the clutch is being released? Everything is computer controlled, so why not?

Did 200kmh in 4th gear at just over 7000 rpm.

Basically the gold wing for laidback cruising, the k1600 for anything spirited riding.

If you want a tourer, get a Goldwing, if you want a fast flickable bike get a sport bike and if you want an inbetweener get a R1250RT which combines all of these facets very nicely for the average guy. No one can question the quality build of the K1600 or the bullet proof engine, but the overall higher center of gravity on such a heavy bike just means it’s a question of when you drop it, not if.

Quick note to correct an inaccuracy in this review: the phone compartment DOES feature a usb-c plug to charge your phone. The cable is NOT included (grrr :-/ $30 for a $26k machine?... ).. I own the 2022 (purchased new last June 22).. Choosing between this and the Goldwing was one of the most difficult decisions I had to make in recent years.. but I live in the mountains, and quickly passing groups of cars with the Goldwing in short straights between turns feels underwhelming.. In comparison, the k1600 is a rocket power-wise, and a real pleasure to handle in the twisties.

I have had three Yamaha ventures, a BMW K 1200 LT, a Honda GL 1800 goldwing
I went back to an older Yamaha royal star venture 2008, because I do all my own work, and after owning the BMW and then the Goldwing. I wanted to go back to something I could actually service myself, now that labor is $125 an hour at the dealer.. are used to be a mechanic at three different dealerships when I was in my 20s. I know how to do the basic maintenance, but I found it on the BMW and the Goldwing, it was much more complicated to do simple jobs on other bikes that are not so simple on the BMWs and the gold wings anymore, I don’t want to have to marry the dealer to keep one of those things serviced correctly..
On my BMW K 1200 LT. I wanted to have a break and clutch fluids changed. There were warnings all over the Internet not to even think about trying to do that job myself. Because if I got any air in the system, the brake system would completely shut down and I would have no brakes front or rear until the machine has been transferred my trailer to the nearest BMW dealer to have it reset.. I ended up doing the job myself with a couple of master cylinder attachments to increase the brake fluid and clutch fluid capacity to reduce the chance of having the system suck air because that system is so different. It uses electric service to send the brake fluid to the calipers.. there was no feel to those brakes.. they were grabby because they were electric/hydraulic.. that BMW was the most flawed motorcycle I ever owned. And I’ve had dozens and dozens of motorcycles. Was very expensive also. I had a collision with a deer at 70 miles an hour on that BMW. Both untethered mirrors went straight to China. They popped right off and said goodbye. $5500 damage, that was 2010 prices. Each mirror was $492. They’re probably $2000 apiece today, and they were no more sophisticated than the mirrors on my Honda Pacific Coast which I commuted on for 24 years. The mirrors on that machine which looked almost identical were only $87 apiece. And they had tethers on them on the Honda. So if you bumped one or had a collision with a deer, the mirrors would not go skipping down the road..
I actually dropped my BMW two times in parking lots. It was because of how top-heavy it was, and the grabby no feel electric brakes. If you have the handlebars turned slightly and you touch the front brakes, that weird front end that does not compress does not absorb that energy. It goes to making the bike very unstable and very heavy. I spoke to a group of other K 1200 LT owners one night at a bike gathering. I told him I dropped my machine twice. All three of them started laughing and one of them said get used to it, everybody drops them at least once a year..
are used to be three BMW dealerships here near my home here in Western Pennsylvania. Now in 2023, there are zero BMW dealer’s.. all three of those dealers that used to be here are gone, out of business..
I don’t know what it’s like around the rest of the world, or in Europe, but I would talk to other BMW owners of the same machines before I would go out on that limb again..
One other thing that happened on that BMW with ABS brakes.
this is the reason I got rid of the machine
I was searching for a campground that my friends and I were going to meet one weekend. I got onto a back road and needed to turn around. I started down a fairly steep paved road that had a lot of gravel and fly ash on it. I think it was near a industrial site where the local power station dumped its burnt coal. so I started down that slope and I went to use my brakes. The ABS took over and detected that the wheels were starting to slip on those tiny fly ash marbles. I felt nothing in the brake lever or the brake pedal. Nothing. I had no brakes at all.. none.. there was a 90° corner at the bottom of this hill I was not going to be able to make that turn. I ran straight into the grass and I was lucky there was an auto salvage yard with a wire mesh fence 8 feet high all around the property. I ran straight into that fence, it was like a wire net that stopped me. Luckily I did not drop the machine but it did damaged the front fender.. that is when I decided that I do not want a motorcycle with ABS brakes. Motorcyclist magazine pointed out when Suzuki came out with their updated version of the V Strom 1000, which I had at the time the old style non-ABS v strom 1000.. I was interested to see what they had to say about the new model. And they pointed out that people that would take this motorcycle off road on dirt roads and gravel and possibly slippery muddy roads with slopes to them, or risking life and limb because you could not turn the ABS brakes off on the new Suzuki V Strom.. they pointed out that - that is dangerous..
I had a Moto Guzzi Norge with ABS brakes. The differences, you can turn off the ABS system on the moto Guzzi just by pushing a button on the dashboard. And if you have a problem with your brakes on the Guzy, the brakes automatically revert to conventional braking.. you can also bleed the brakes without any special attachments. And it doesn’t cost $750 labor to change the clutch and brake fluid like it does on the BMW. It’s probably more than $1000 now to change the brake fluid and the clutch fluid on a BMW K 1200 LT. $750 was the price in 2010+ parts plus shop materials, plus disposal fee, plus tax..
Speak to someone about the realities of owning a BMW motorcycle or car before you consider one. If you are wealthy and you do not mind the fact that you have to marry the dealer. Be my guest. But BMWs are sure aren’t what they used to be

I rode the K1600 and was grinning ear to ear as the front tire ripped itself off the pavement. It is very fun but... I went and bought a manual Goldwing. The Wing is not as fast but it is so much nicer on long rides. If I was 10 years younger it might be a different story but these days I choose comfort over warp speed.

I was talking about how easy it was to wheelie. The tire comes off the pavement with ease where a Goldwing doesn't have near enough to just power the front off the ground.

I think the reason 6 cylinder engines are so smooth is because, as the other pistons and con rods are in so many different positions at any given moment, they are each acting as balance shafts for each other. Not a very technical explanation, but I'm not a very technical person. Now someone will, either, explain it better or, more likely tell me I've got it all wrong.

    • @lyndonbull3581

These bikes are huge but I still can't help but wonder how well the naked concept version would've sold, had BMW put it into production. A pal has many bikes, two of them Honda CBX 1000's, one with upside down forks and I've always fancied a go on an inline 6. Sadly, most of his great collection has been ruined in storage very recently, by a badly leaking roof. It was an awfully grim spectacle, rust and corrosion everywhere on stuff previously worth a small fortune.

I guess it’s the result of chopping the rear down a bit. Could not get used to the clonking gearbox. That said great quality bike just not for me.

Not an entirely balanced review in that the correct bike to match against the Gold Wing is a GTLE. I suspect the end conclusions would have been quite different!. Comparing a top end tourer to a Bagger is the cause of the conclusions and comparison comments throughout. Still an impressive result for "just a Bagger" to nearly pip the Gold Wing. Try it again and use a GT or GTL (Ideally a GTL).
