Hi Matt! Sooty I didn't get back to you sooner. On the subject of the material of your neck wood, maple is a very tight closed grain type of wood not requiring grain filler at all. It's also a very light blonde color. Mahogany on the other hand has a more punish hue to it and open grain requiring filler. If you google different types of wood you can look at

Great video very helpful - I see the green tape, so I'm going to tape off my maple top. Thanks for posting it and lucky you making guitars in Vegas! best to you, Bill Baker TUNIS Basses.....

This was an awesome video, thanks! Except I rubbed mine on with a paper towel, rubbed it in good, and then wiped off the excess right away. And then only had to lightly sand with 000 steel wool. I repeated this process once more. But it came out beautiful and with a WHOLE lot less sanding. Thanks again!!!

Thank you, I was dreading starting on my acoustic, but this makes it look a little less daunting.

I made the mistake 10 years ago of not grain filling my Stratocaster. It's still nice looking, but the lacquer sank right into the grain. I'll never make that mistake again.
It's made of alder, so I would say depending on the finish you use you should still fill alder. I used nitro, and very few coats (back then I was young and I thought the finish really made an impact on the sound of the guitar, now I'm not so sure the wood even makes a difference).

One thing to be aware of using fillers is how and when to apply stain. (If you are staining the piece). Some fillers won't take stain and some fillers have an opacity to them that shows in the finish. Also, I've had some pretty bad experiences using nitrocellulose lacquer on top of some fillers (particularlu water based fillers). Always experiment with a spare piece of similar wood first.

looks great Eric! Thanks for the video! Curious if you would do a clear coat finish first over the guitar if you were planning to use a water based dye after?

Hello Eric! (My name is Erick too :p) I have a question; What if I would like to let the guitar unfinished without clear coat, sort of like those Ibanez SOL, should I apply linseed oil? how many coats?

I'm building a bass using a mahogany tele body. My first build. Two questions. How thick should the body be and should mahogany be cleared or will it take a color such as Butterscotch Blonde ? Thanks for your time.

would you recommend wood filling a rosewood neck?

  • @1mediaguy

Have you tried using Timbermate prior to using water based aniline dye? I tried it a couple builds ago, and the Timbermate washed out of the grain. I ended up painting instead. Any recommendations on what to use as grain filler prior to water based dye that will still allow the wood to take the dye? Thanks.

Hi 1mediaguy! the answer to your question is yes you can use a water based dye. Thank you for watching!

Hey Eric I am repainting my les paul studio and I've got it all sanded down to 320 grit with the top sanded down to 400 grit. Do I still need to grain fill the back and neck if the Gibson factory already did that? I just took off the satin finish that they put on in the factory. The back doesn't look real porous.

If you want you could put some filler on just to be sure. I don't know how much sanding you've done so it's hard to tell. Good luck!

Hey man so I m doing a project and the neck I bought on the site that I bought it from says it is mahogany but looks more like a maple which I have on a regular guitar how do I figure out what wood it is? And how many coats of grain filling do i have to do if it is mahogany? Thanks

How did you achieve the glossy look on the mahogany after the grain was filled?

    • @Jackson1959.
      @Jackson1959. 4 роки тому

After grain filling. You stain it. Then apply 2 3 coats sanding sealer with sanding in between. And then 3 4 coats of nitrocellulose lacquer. Wet sand the lacquer and buff it to gloss.

  • @chrischoir3594

can you put this under nitro? I thought the grain filler needed to be oil based for Nitro?
