Sanding & Raising Grain for a Better Finish

- Sanding the guitar body and using a technique called raising the grain to achieve a better final finish. This involves applying water to the surface after sanding to 240grit which makes the ends of the grain swell, lifting them from the surface. You then sand again to remove them.
Process is repeated several times before the final sanding at 320grit. This leaves the surface smooth and ready for finish to be applied.

Love watching a craftsman work
Thank you 👍
Looking really good. That rosewood top is amazing. Gonna look great with finish applied.
Using a wipe on lacquer with this one, been doing some tests that came out ok so fingers x’d

Looks great!
Thank you 👍
Good video. I stupidly sanded up to 800 and thought id google this before any staining!
Thank you, we’ve all done it - I went up to 1200 once cos I wanted to see how smooth I could make the wood feel 🤣
your build has an incredible neck heel...
Thank you, I carve it until it feels ‘right’ to my hands; I don’t like leaving a blocky heel so try to get it to feel like a neck-through.
I have built several guitars and messed up the finish just about every time. I found a guy in a woodworking forum that lived about an hr away he does a great finish but he is in now way inexpensive.
Finishing Is easy to mess up & hard to get right. I usually use oil & wax as it’s simple & effective. Going for a wipe on lacquer on this one, hoping for a satin look finish
How did you sand the skinny sides?
Started with a bobbin sander 80 & 120 grit, then when using finer grades I use foam sanding blocks that mould to the contours as you move around.
Thanks for watching 👍
@@WhitefootGuitars thanks 👍🏼 I appreciate it.
