I just noticed something here: 4:47 Mondego’s face seems to change on each angle, going from enraged denial, to realization, to just fear. It speaks to the character’s mental process so clearly and I love it!!!

This is typically the kind of ending where the character fulfilled his ambition, but you just feel... Strangely empty. The epicness of the fight doesn't make it rewarding, cause he doesn't won anything in the end. And that's great. Can I rewatch it? I'll rewatch it.
    I love it.

I think this should be 5.5. Dantes did go on to exact his revenge in killing and placing his old friends to financial and political ruin. Iirc, he planned to kill mercedes and her son albert next but decided against it discovering that he still has feelings for her. So he allowed them to live and he turned a new leaf letting go of all his hate and looking towards the future, hence the upbeat albeit dramatic redemption song of "the man I used to be".

I love the parallels between the younger him and the older him as he internally struggles with how to solve this. His bitter self wants to be furious and fight and kill for what he wants. While the younger him is pained by the older hind decisions as although he is more emotional and in pain he wishes only happiness for his love as he has to sit and watch himself brutally hurt her as he had been hurt. That’s just what I got from it anyways.

While this video is dripping in symbolism alone, I love comparing 6/6 and 6.5/6. In 6/6, Dantes is free of his worries and guilt and it ends with him flying towards the stars - towards the heavens and free. In 6.5/6, the Count is engulfed with desire for revenge and dark intent. He is flying downwards as if towards Hell and to a sinful act of destroying and ultimately ending Mondego out of wrath and self pride. Amazing work, ladies!!! I’ve been invested in your series for 5 years!

@@thecommentator9181 Having read the book myself, that's not quite it.
In the book, the Count does indeed kill Mondego, and only Mercedes begging him not to saves her son, Albert, from being murdered by him as well.
Granted, the man has had a very long, arduous journey to get to that point, and it had done nothing for his mental state, and it certainly contributes to the already festering self-hatred and the rage towards Mondego, who had gone as far as to have him falsely jailed and lie to Mercedes about the count being dead.
After he kills Mondego, there is a chapter or two after it where he wraps everything up and vanishes off the grid again, presumably released from his pain to an extent, which is where 6/6 The Man I Used To Be comes in.

Holy shit I love the way you incorporated the song into this. Honestly at first I was skeptical because I wasn't sure how you were going to effectively put this particular song together(namely with who would be singing what) but honestly you blew me out of the water with this. There is just far too much that I love about this that I could dissect every single frame. It's honestly ingenious how you composed this. So instead I'll focus on one of my favorite bits. That murderous intent RADIATED out of the screen at 3:39. Everything that followed after--namely Twilight's hesitation upon seeing Rainbow after realizing their own treachery was portrayed so well that honestly despite everything you felt bad for them--especially as Rainbow's own past self was pleading for the rage to end. It's honestly just so powerful it hits all of the emotional beats perfectly.
I wish I had more time to write out all that I could about it but I do not. So I will leave it at this: I can't wait to see the finished product should there ever be one. Even as it is now this animatic is jaw-dropping. PLEASE do not stop drawing. The world would be lesser without it.

Okay. I have a few things to say about this. I have been following y'all for literally years. Since the very beginning really. And I am glad to be here, on this journey with y'all.
I'm usually more of a Transformers guy, so this made me think of Skyfire/Starscream, which I think is cool.
Everyone is talking about the 3:38 mark. And that is such an emotionally powerful conclusion, but people don't realize they would care as much if they weren't already hooked.
1:22 is probably my favorite part. He is so angry, but there is just such a venerability in his facial expressions, and in his eyes. He's angry, yes. But he's hurt. He wants this to not be happening. But he can't stop himself. The nostril flare and the frown aren't signs of anger, but derision, and combined with the open eyes and perky ears it conveys an open venerability, but the small pupils override that with mistrust. It is absolutely perfect, and it goes by in a second. It's not the same expression as 1:29 because that is pure anger. That passing doubt has closed itself off.
And that feeds perfectly into the 2:14 segment. Mercedes is forgotten, she's been written off. He's not even looking at her any more. That love and venerability is closed off to him, even as his heart cries out for what he truly wants, unable to affect change, trapped like a ghost in the past.
That reflection we see in 3:08. He sings out the words Mercedes cries. She echo's his heart. "Please believe me when I say I love you." And for just a moment, just a glimmer, that doubt is back. That ability to forgive, to put the past behind him. To be The Man He Used To Be. It can be there. It's his one last chance at redemption.
But then he loses it. He has to fight. He has to bring Hell to their Doorstep. He now has to kill. Not just the last of his enemies, but he has to kill the man he used to be. His path is set and no one can change it.
That's the power of 3:38. That's the tragedy. The Count doesn't just kill Mondego, he kills Dantes. Once and for all. He shatters that illusion. There's no going back. The glee he feels at 4:12, it's almost like he is saying "I'm sorry, little one. This is the way it has to be." And Mondego stares at him, struggling. He is scared for his life, but he also knows in his heart of hearts that he deserves this.
And then 4:37, Mercedes turns away. She runs. That that is the tragedy. Dantes is a ghost standing beside her. He is in the past. He cannot change what is happening, he cannot stop the Count from killing her husband. And Mercedes leaves him. She abandons not just her husband, not just the Ct, but the memory of Dantes himself. He is truly a prisoner of the past, and when the Count kills Mondego, Dantes will die. Worse, he will be forgotten.
And the music builds. And the speed builds. And then 4:55 is the single most riveting, smoothest and most satisfying piece of animation y'all have ever done. I congratulate you, and I thank you for sharing this.
On a personal note, when the two stallions start fighting at 2:50, I never really got the whole "thing" girls have for horses. But even in animation format, you convey so much power and muscle and raw strength it's kinds intimidating. My hat's off to you.
The 1:07 mark is really funny, and just a great example of what superb artists you are. The imitation of a street walker, and the disdain in his face and mocking posture makes me laugh every time.
Over all, this is an absolute perfect cap to TCoMC, and I love it. Excellent job, well done, and thank you.

The previous animatic (6/6 The Man I Used to Be) was supposed to be the official end to the Monte Cristo series. But we got an idea to create this video showing the final confrontation between Dantes and Mondego. We call it an "alternate ending" because the song isn't from The Count of Monte Cristo, and so isn't apart of the musical, even though we made it apart of our series. Plus this is like the "bad ending", compared to The Man I Used to Be's "good ending". So people can decide which ending they prefer.

I do love how this song kind of fits with Monte Christo when you look at the Dumas-Family.
    Alexandre Dumas wrote "Monte Cristo".
He also had a Bastard Child, Alexandre Dumas fils.
Dumas fils wrote "La Dame aux Camélias".
The Moulin Rouge-Movie, where this song is used, was based on "Camelias".
It all comes around in the end :3c
Also, fun fact, the guy singing as "Dantes" here is played by Ewan McGregor, aka. Obi-Wan, in the Movie. And man, Obi-Wan got some fucking pipes.
Edit: Another fun fact, "Roxanne" in the movie has the alias of "Satine". And Obi-Wan's love interest in The Clone Wars is also named Satine. This is reaching conspiracy-levels, folks!

Mondego in the book commits suicide after seeing his son, Albert and his wife, Mercedes run away (without regrets)
In the musical, he dies in a duel with Edmond (some versions have Albert shooting his father because Mondego went mad, enough to kill Mercedes so that "no one can have her")
It's only in the movie when Albert is Edmond's child, but he doesn't kill Mondego because of that

I feel bad for Mercedes for three reasons:
    - One her lover (RD/Edmund in this case) was sent to the chateau d’ff pretty early on in their marriage
    - Her lover’s best friend convinced her that he was dead which led to her marrying him (I mean it’s either you’re weeping alone for your long-gone husband or “do the next best thing” and marry his best friend... still a shitty thing done on her part but I can’t really blame her)
    - Her lover is then “come back to life”... but then it turns out he hates her bc of the whole “marrying his best friend thing” (which is understandable on Edmund’s part)
    Overall, everything/everyone is *s a d*
Edit: Oh yeah in this version her former lover (Mondego) is then killed by her other former lover (Edmund) so more sad :DDD

  • @Stuflox
    @Stuflox 5 років тому +169

Holy shit, WOW! Such intense rush of emotions from all the characters at the same time! And all fit quite perfectly to the tone of the song AND the original characters! And the amount of frames you drew in this one is just astonishing! The entire video is full of so many details, I’m blown away by how you made this song fit the overall narrative of the Count of Monte Cristo, with the Count making Fernand angry and continuing his revenge plan throughout the very end filling the scene with so much heat. Every expression each character shows fits both the song and the story of the Count, I can barely imagine how did you come up with such a masterpiece of animatic (that glance from the Count at 3:14 made me tear up a little). This is definitely a great improvement over your previous works.
I’m absolutely up with the idea of the Count using the cloudy environment for his advantage over Fernand, because he’s a pegasus and he’s not match against a powerful alicorn with magic. I really like how you demonstrated Fernand’s power on 3:16 to double clarify that. It made me realize that with all the “making My Little Pony look like the Count of Monte Cristo” you kinda forget that those characters, in the first place, are Equestrian ponies, therefore they are supposed to act like Equestrian ponies, so the sheer lack of swords in this one is a very welcoming addition to expand on how the Count’s and Fernand’s iconic duel could’ve occurred in a different universe.
The idea of Edmond’s spirit(?) always being beside Shycedes throughout the entire animatic is a very interesting representation of how Edmond kept his promise to be with Shycedes even if she can’t see him. It’s a cool detail that he never leaves her side throughout the entire video. Too bad that Shycedes, like in the musical’s duel, does absolutely nothing… But if she did I think we probably wouldn’t have such a brutal version of Fernand’s demise. Speaking of which! The way you portray the end of Fernand in your animatic is probably the most epic and yet the most brutal and horrifying way to die he ever had. I had to re-watch the very end of Fernand being thrown by the Count in slow-motion just to get all the details of this death, and the way Fernand looked behind him right before the impact is very true to his character, but it’s still an absolutely horrific image, comparing to his previous deaths in other adaptations. I don’t know if I like this portray more than the original source, but it’s sure something I wouldn’t be able to get out of my head when I think of this character.
My favorite moment from the entire video probably starts at 3:54 and continues ‘till the very end. I remember how in the musical they made the duel against Fernand last a bit too long, and the more you looked, it was getting more and more boring and less epic. With the way how the Count completely shatters Edmond’s icon and how the eyeless image of Edmond is reflected in Fernand’s eyes is such a small and yet heartbreaking detail that made the impact on 3:56 feel even more powerful. And the way the Count crashed right into Fernand at 3:57… That small shake, even though it’s just an animatic and a 2-dimensional picture, is just so powerful especially with the orchestra appearing for the scene. All the Count’s anger is just so… Clear during the entire fall! How? How did you make this moment so powerful, emotional, awesome, tragic and epic?!
Overall, I’m happy to see this NOT SMALL (5 minutes is hella lots of work, trust me, I know that) addition to your The Count of Monte Cristo AU and I’m honestly kinda horrified with you making me so emotional with the characters due to your videos… Would I consider this animatic to be canon in your AU? Fernand dies either way so... HECK YES! I need a chaotic impactful battle between those two, they are my fav babies! :D
You are one of a kind with your works, Ink Potts, and I can’t wait to see what will your great minds come up with next time!

Thank you so much!!! Everything you've said is just ahhhhhh!! All the details you've pointed out, I love knowing people's favourite parts and their thoughts, and you've mentioned so many. Thank you :D
There were times we debated using swords, or weapons of some sort, but it never really worked. Horses fight using their bodies, so these guys do too. It just made more sense to us.
What you called Edmond's spirit, we always referred to while making this as "The man he used to be" XD and yeah, Shycedes doesn't really do anything but no one wants to get in the middle of two people fighting, they're likely to get injured themselves.
And we always wanted Fernand's death to be brutal, to really feel that impact, to show that there's no hero in this story, that The Count of Monte Cristo is a story about revenge, betrayal and death...
Thanks again for your wonderful comment, we hope you enjoy our future projects as much as you've enjoy the Count of Monte Cristo series, Stuflox :D

I hope ya'll manage to come back to this some day and polish it (I'm serious-it's on the same level of intensity story-wise as "Hell to You Doorstep") even though it's not from the same musical. It just works very well!

Coming back here to see this magnificent animation, and I'm not gonna lie that I always get goosebumps every time I rewatch it! I'm really impressed! Is just amazing the way you put a definite emotion for each character that we can easily interpret the feelings between them.
An indescribable sensation! Your content is extraordinary!!!
Keep going! You have great potential.🇧🇷♥️

I finally saw the original video for this music today and so many people were complimenting the choreography and editing. Honestly, I don't think it holds a candle to this. That one told the emotion and showed the story. THIS ONE, told the emotion, AND showed it. We already know the "modified" story from the previous animatics. Honestly, love this WAY BETTER.

Aw it would be so hard being in Shy's position cause (at least what I think) is that she kinda loves both of them. I mean over time she'd love Twilight and have a kid with him but than she finds out her old soulmate was alive. Than he ends up killing the father of your child.

In the original, she marries Mondego out of pressure after Dantes father dies and she is left with nowhere to go. Dantes actually takes a liking to her grown up son, after the two fight a duel. Following the reveal of the extent of Mondego's treachery and villainy Mercedes and her son leave him, donating his wealth to charity as they go and then living a simple life together. Mondego shoots himself later. Mercedes is not heartbroken over that.

@@scifimisc9191 Aw that's a much happier ending. I wonder if it's like that in this animatic though. Besides Mondego/Twi shooting himself.

@@angrygoat7503 I find it happy to, and i'm not sure. I would hope so, but its fine if they went for something darker. The other half of the originals ending is Mondego betrays and makes a slave out of another girl named Haydee, who Dantes ends up owning. She testifies against Mondego to help oust him, and along the way Dantes falls in love with her and frees her. The two actually go off into the sunset together lol. When Dantes is talking about being there again for "her" in part 6 of the animatic, he was probably talking about Haydee.

@@scifimisc9191 Ha it's been a couple years since this comment but I've been looking into the musical some more and thought I'd let you know that when Edmond says "her" in 'Man I use to be' he wasn't talking about Haydee.
Mercedes and Edmond renew their vows of never leaving eachothers side and are still in love at the end, so it's different from the book!
You can see there are actually a couple songs unreleased that take place after 'Man I use to be' :)

With how twisted and messed both Edmond and Mondego got because of their self-pride and desire for revenge, is no wonder Mercedes at the end of the novel decided she was better off to become a nun.
