Even though I'm from Oahu and currently live here, Kauai would be the place I'd recommend for people to experience that really close-knit community and laid back lifestyle. Probably my favorite island to visit.

How long do you visit for, and at the end of your stay do you feel ready to return to Oahu? Or like you could stay longer? Also, I'd be interested to see what kind of videos you could make over there!

Maui No Ka Oi! Please keep in mind every time you hear this said that Maui County includes three other islands. I lived on Oahu twice, the first time in the mid-1950's. The second time from 1959 to 1961. The first time I visited Molokai, which is part of Maui County, I knew this is the place. My wife and I started with a condo. In March 2019 we closed on a house. We've lived here full time ever since. As Ted Kanemitsu advised back before my wife and I bought the house: "Don't try to change Molokai. Let Molokai change you." I consider myself a better man because we took Ted's advice. At seventy-five, I dearly love this island. It's people are the best I've ever observed anywhere. All the Hawaiian Islands are what "ALOHA" is all about. Thank you, Mahalo, for this lovely video! Andy McKane, Maunaloa, Molokai.

The Big Island is the island that speaks to me…I feel at “home” there. The giant land mass is comforting knowing that there’s always a quiet spot to find when you want or need it. In a more ideal world, I would live in a nice private home in Holualoa with views of the other islands and the space to stretch out.
Unfortunately, I’m one who accepts that the lack of medical facilities there makes it impractical to retire there, so I’ll try to find a nice and peaceful spot on Oahu.
Kauai would be a great place to live for 1-2 months out of the year…the island is stunningly beautiful with lots of fun things to do. It is simply too small to live full time there.
Maui is a beautiful island that is perfect for a short vacation. The problem of living there full time is that it is too “sterile”…I never feel like I am on a tropical island when in Maui.

Same for us Gus. Wife and I live in Northern California and love the serenity of the Big Island when we visit. We usually find ourselves at Waikoloa. Unfortunately I'm not 100% sure we would not get bored on the Big Island after a few months but I would welcome not always having that city feel. I also worry about medical facilities and variety of stores and restaurants.
We also enjoy Waikiki (town) in Oahu but it's a lot like being at Pier 39 in San Francisco.... trade one tourist spot for another. Oahu may hold a spot for us one day, perhaps one of the not-so-touristy areas Derek and crew highlight so well on the vlogs.

That's why I lean towards O'ahu, since it has a little bit of city, country, suburbia, medical and infrastructure. In pizza terms, O'ahu is the Supreme 😛 with a little bit of everything!

Maui offers all of what the other islands excel in. Go to the East side or Iao Valley, you’re in Kauai. Go up Haleakala or visit West Maui and you’re on the Big Island. You don’t have the big city but who wants that anyway. No Island offers as many world class beaches. Best all around Island. .

Hilo on the Big Island has UH Hilo and a great college-town vibe. I coincidentally visited on Bob Marley festival night! With black, green, white, and magic sand; snow and beach and unreal waterfalls and plants (like my favorite childhood book, "Moke & Poki In The Rainforest"), it is a beautiful island with everything.

I know Kauai likely isn't for everyone, but it is my absolute dream destination to live at. I've been a few times and I just feel so very at home there. I can be a bit of an anxious person in big cities and in Kauai I feel at peace. I also love nature, I've never been one for parties or crowds, so I don't feel I'm missing out on too much. Plus Oahu is a very very short plane ride away if I really do feel I need a weekend in the city or want to attend a concert or event. Unfortunately moving is a bit complicated for me as I am Canadian, however, I just got accepted to UH Manoa with a scholarship which means I can attend!!! So very excited to spend a few years in Oahu for school, and hoping that I can get a work visa post degree and eventually obtain a greencard and then move to Kauai. Working on a long term plan here. Anyway, I love your videos and content, and the neighborhoods one especially has been helpful as I look into places to live while at UHM. Mahalo!

I've been in the Islands for 50 years, most of that time has been on The Big Island after spending 5 years on Oahu a few weeks on Maui ( all I could stand ) and the rest on My Island. My Mom is from Hilo and a DeMello, my Dad was a deck officer on the Lurline Matson ship that is long gone. I made one trip on the Lurline to and from the Big Island. I was born in 1939 in Alameda California came to Hawaii to live and we were told to leave in 41 during the summer because war was coming. We moved back to Alameda California an that is where I was raised, went to school graduated from Alameda High in 1957, joined the Marine Corps in late 57 and after that moved to San Jose Calif worked for Honda Motorcycles then moved to Hawaii in 1968 and the rest is history. Spent 6 months on Oahu and was sent to Hilo to take over the Hilo store and fell in Love with the Big Island. Oahu was too crazy, but fine since I was young, Maui was too yuppy, but the Big Island fit my life just fine and I did very well in the business world and my personal life plus I was around family. My Mom came back to Hawaii years before I got here, my first trip was in 1962 and I thought it was paradise and decided to make it my home, it took a few years but I have no regrets at all, now I'm 83 and still here along with my two kiddo's who are in their 30's.

Very informative video. I think you should have spend a bit more time on the big island. It’s in a boom cycle and people are flooding into kona areas. I would think this island will be the major destination for future residents. It really has it all except major hospitals and huge malls and city night life. Which are hardly a deal breaker. The size of hawaii and having such diversity makes it an top choice.

Agreed! I went and lived on Hawai'i for four months last year and by the time I was leaving it was getting more and more crowded and rent prices were going through the roof, which of course the locals weren't happy about at all.
It had a lot to do with the fact that due to covid people were getting transitioned into work from home jobs, thus being able to move wherever. Many companies realized they can make that an option permanently, so all of these work from home people decided "hey! why not move to Hawaii?" - it is the dream place to live in the united states. But since those people likely make significant amounts of money, they can afford the rent price hikes, unlike the locals working local jobs.

    • @Adam-lz6cr
      @Adam-lz6cr 2 роки тому +1

@@movingtohawaii Derek, I think the pros of the Big Island are less populated and less tourists. You get most of the amenities of Oahu but on a smaller scale. The Cons are driving. People complain that there is to much traffic on Oahu and yes the roads are busy, However the Big Island does have less traffic but it’s so spread out that you are driving longer. If I want to go from my Condo in Waimea to Costco in Kona it’s an hour drive. We do love Oahu and Being in the Military there are advantages to being on Oahu. We try and get back to the islands twice a year, and every time we get back to Oahu we find something new to do that he have not done in the past. I always tell people to try not to spend to much time in Waikiki if they want to experience the culture. I also tell them to be respectful to everyone and leave the mainland attitude back on the mainland. Kauai is also one of my favorite islands that we love to visit, we initially wanted to buy a condo there but not much inventory in our price range so we chose the Big Island. Maui I have visited a few times, it’s Beautiful but it feels like the majority of the people there are visitors and you miss out on interacting with locals. Maybe it’s just a vibe I get but part of why we love our place in Waimea on the Big Island is we can go to Longs or any restaurant and we always see locals and end up talking and just enjoy the small talk. Sorry I rambled but I just love Hawaii! I get so many people reach out to me when they are going and I always try and tell the the do’s and don’t so they enjoy themselves and yet be a good visitor! You have the most medical professionals living here who can attend to your medical needs/problems. Of course, Oahu is where the
majority of the people live~~"Gathering place." You have a multiplicity of musical productions, shopping malls, ethnic restaurants, etc.
Of course, because we all have individual choices, Hawaii state gives you a great selection to live on as well as visit. Have visited the Big Isle,

It seems strange to me that if the big island was the first to be populated by Polynesians how Kauai has the most ancient terracing and temple sites. Alex Pua on Molokai says that when the Polynesians arrived the terracing and temples were already built. I secretly recorded a conversation I had with Kieth Robinson and he said he could loose his land (10,000 acres in Wainiha) if archeologists new what was out there. Just Kalalau valley alone should be reason enough to reevaluate the age of the ruins on Kauai. I've found ten ton boulders moved into place and used in the construction of Kalalau and evidence of intentional destruction is everywhere. The entire island should be a UNESCO heritage site.

cess pools are no longer allowed, and the Big Island is very easy to live on. You stay away from the flow areas, like I said I've been here 50 years, seen flows that were very bad but never lost anything. You need big bucks to live on Oahu, Maui and Kauai, but can live fine on the Big Isle in the Kau district, great place to retire but jobs are far and few between. You can make a good living in the service area of business, I had a Auto detailing business for 18 years and did very well, now I publish a motorsports magazine and I'm 83.

Ya...this might have been your video I liked best. I'm an old man, so moving again is a major debate, that I haven't decided. I can't find one island that 100% fits all my needs and wants. Btw, I grew up rural Montana, very similar to Molokai. 3 hour drive just to get to any larger store (like a Foodland). Anyway, I had to laugh at that, "Don't date your cousin." Not many get that joke. That's rez-dawg humor. You need to have lived in such an environment.

Well, hey, there is a small private airline company that goes between like 3 or 4 islands, which I've heard is only $60 for a trip (or was a bit over a year ago. who knows now..) so getting over to a nearby island for the needs that aren't met on the one you've chosen isn't super hard or expensive.

Can you make a video about the word *Haole?*
Growing up in the south, when I hear this word, I hear the N-word, but for white people... To me, it's the same thing, it's a racist and offensive word and it's unnecessary unless someone is trying to be disrespectful.,
It's safe to say that almost everyone from the mainland, when considering moving to Hawaii discover that word, they have second thoughts. Especially if they/we have kids.

    • @movingtohawaii

We’re actually in a unique position to discuss this topic because we have people on our team who represent a mix of local, visitor, Hawaiian, Black, White, parent and non-parent. Kind of a mix of everything!
Of course, as real estate professionals we’ll have to walk a thin line. Like, razor-thin 😅

Pls don't encourage foreingners to move to Hawaii. We as hawaiians only have the Aina for life. We have been too long being 2nd place to everyone. We as hawaiians should be (nokaoi) meaning #1. You can show off our Aina but pls don't encourage others to invade our living. You see, hawaii has been out priced big time. And its sad to see our people move to the mainland. Terrible. See? You can't buy a place by yourself. Its too expensive. This is my manao to everyone.. everyone has an opinion. You should teach how hawaii was taken over by bloodshed and how our QUEEN was torchered in her own palace. Very very sad. We as hawaiians cry to see our Queen had suffered for her people. Teach the truth and not encourage more people to move here PLEASE. In the name of all HAWAIIANS pls pls. Don't encourage!!! You can show hawaii, but don't encourage ppl to move to any of our Aina.
