This is a fantastic video lesson on how to eat soup. This is exactly how I was taught by my aunt who was an educator many years ago. Today I bought some Oneida spoons for creamy soup, and I thought I need a refresher on soup etiquette. They did it so elegantly and effortlessly, I always was mesmerized by it. And now I remembered some of aunt’s lessons too not only about soup, but also general knowledge, and my father teaching me different types of knives and how to hold them, how to eat different types of fish and drink tea. Hello! Thank you so much for watching and what a terrific question! And your instinct is right! Usually big Hardy stews and soups, have a big spoon. And it’s usually a lot easier to eat off the side of that, they’re usually way too big to even think about putting them straight into your mouth, which, Dining at the highest levels, is considered, poor form. So for your soup with big chunky veggies, use a bigger spoon and you’re good to go! Thanks so much, and I send you very best wishes for a lovely day! 💕🥣
Thank you for valuable tips! Where do I need to put the spoon when taking a pause during conversation or need both hands free? Should it be put on soup saucer?
Hello Tatiana! Thank you so much for taking time from your day to watch the video, and leave such a terrific comment! Yes, you are absolutely correct, if there is a saucer for the soup bowl, during breaks, you leave the spoon on the saucer. When you’re completely finished, you would put the spoon back on the saucer as well. However, if there is no sauce or just the bowl, you would have to leave the spoon in the bowl of soup. A saucer is always preferred, but not always presented. I would be incredibly grateful if you would be so kind as to subscribe to my channel, help me, spread the word about it, and offer any topics for future videos that interest you, I think she might like to see. I’m sending you very best wishes for a lovely evening! Warm regards, Heidi.💕🍜
Sorry for the noob questions but I trust your input. The soup is really hot so in the actual eating. i) Can we slurp it or is that a no no? ii) Can we blow on it too cool it? (All of this at the spoon I mean).
I came here as I was sitting at my computer and sharing a bowl of clam chowder with my catr. You know hovering over the bowl pulling the spoon in a slurping it. I giggled and though t I know thee is a rproper and potite way to have soup. So I came here to learn some etiqwuite. This is fun I am enjoying your videos. I am already polit and have good manners but nothing wrong with learning etique. I will be sure to put it to practice.
Question: what if we are served a hearty soup, such as clam chowder? How do we gracefully get the soup onto the spoon and then into our mouths without looking gauche? Also,I was taught long ago that it is NEVER permissible to blow on your soup to cool it.Does this rule still stand? THANKS!!
I have a question. At the end of the video, you specify where to leave your spoon to indicate that you have finished. Is this the same location where you should leave your spoon if you have not finished, and and you are just taking a break from eating the soup? Please reply at your convenience. Thank you.
Hello! Thank you for watching and yes, you are correct leaving a spoon in the soup is considered less than optimal. It should go on the plate, or soup saucer, if you will, whether you’re resting or finished. However, today, not many people have soup saucers. Instead, people have nice soup bowls, without a plate underneath. In this case, there is no other option, and whether you’re resting or finished, the spoon would rest in the bowl. I hope this helps a little, and again, thanks for your great question, and please watch a few other videos and let me know what you think! Best wishes for a lovely day! Heidi💕💕🥣
Great question I guess the simple answer is, discreetly. However, I totally get your point sometimes big gumbo, stews, etc.,it’s can be difficult to skip from the side of the spoon, even a large and in those cases, be reasonable, and do what you need to do with as much discretion and elegant as you can. The bottom line is she want to enjoy a lonely, fool, gumbo, stew, chili, so just use your best banners and be very aware of your surroundings. If it’s an informal setting them, don’t however, if it’s a bit more horrible, then just do the best you can. Thank you so much for watching, Lea Anne! By the way, I love your handle! 💕💕💕🥣🥣

Hello and thanks for watching! Great question! Usually rustic type soups or stews, are served with a larger soup spoon, to make it easier to eat the soup, basically the same way it would any other soup. I’ve seen some spoons for more substantial soups, that are very large, and this more helpful when eating soups like this. It is interesting when you get into all the different types of soup spoons. Broth type soup usually have a smaller round bowled spoon, as compared to the larger oblong bowl of the spoon for heartier soups. I hope this helps! Hello! Thanks so much for watching and asking this great question! I would say most soups do not need stirring, but if yours does, please do it very discreetly- just a gentle swish back-and-forth and it should be nicely stirred. It will be a rare occasion where you will need to stir your soup, so you probably will not have to worry about it. However, if you do you know what to do very gently. Hello, Brooklyn! Thank you for watching and for the great question. Big, hearty soups should have a bigger spoon, more oval than round, and it's the same--scoop away and then bring it to your mouth. But, sometimes, you have a small spoon, and the soup is extra thick--in this case, just be reasonable and do the best you can with what you have to work with. Etiquette is really about being a kind and caring person; do that, and the rest will be okay, even super thick soup! Thank you, and I'd be very grateful if you'd kindly subscribe! Warm regards, Heidi

Hello Annabel! Thank you so much for watching, and asking such a great question! Sometimes you have soups with filled pasta in them, which should be bite-sized. So, you could use your soup spoon to pick up one of the filled pastas and then eat it the same way; tipping the spoon away from you to pick up the pasta piece, and then bringing it to your mouth and tipping it into your mouth from the side of the spoon. So it’s the same, and soup plates, or coupes, as I like to call them, same thing applies, if the coop is not on another plate, you would rest your spoon in the bowl of soup. Usually with coops, they are on their own, no saucer or under plate, so you just rest your spoon in the soup. Hope this helps a little bit, Sending your very best wishes for a lovely weekend! Warmest regards, Heidi. 💕🥄🥣
@@annabelgrace1267 hello! Sometimes big, hearty soups, like stews, and one of my favs; beef bourguignon, is a very large spoon, and sometimes, if it’s super hearty or on top of crusty bread, sometimes the way it could be served, you may have to use your fork and knife, at some point, if the pieces of beef are too big. You make me hungry, I think I’m going to have to make this tomorrow! Sending very best wishes for a wonderful weekend! Warmest regards, Heidi 💕💕🥄🍴

Hello! There’s a lot of history and tradition regarding the proper way to eat soup. And by the proper way, I mean when Dining at the highest circles! If you’re at home, or Dining informally, eat how you’d like. However, I do stress that if you follow proper dining etiquette, it becomes second nature, regardless of where you are and your surroundings. Scooping away makes sense because it is less likely to become messy if there is a mishap. I consider it somewhat similar to cutting away from yourself with a knife. Besides all that, it’s just much more elegant. Thank you so much for watching and commenting.💕🥣
I'm okay with everything except having to bring the soup spoon all the way up to my mouth with just a little smidge of soup in it. I'd be paying too much attention to my soup etiquette that I would not enjoy myself. But I would say some practice is in order and maybe I'll be more agreeable to it
Hello! Yes, you’re absolutely right! Practice makes perfect! I remember being a little girl, and my mother making my two younger sisters, and I bring soup all the way up to our mouse, and of course we drip things all over, but we were learning. And in the end, doing things properly, became second nature, and easy to do. But of course, be reasonable, and remember, what I teach is when you were dining at the highest circles. But if you’re dining, informally, or at home with family and friends, do you! But, I do subscribe to the school of thought that says if you practice your manners all the time, you will use them no matter where you are or what the circumstance. I think that’s something to aspire to. Sending my very best wishes to you, and thank you very much for taking the time to watch the video. We have so many videos posted, I’d love your thoughts on other videos! 💕💕💕
Hello Annabelle! Thanks so much for watching, and asking a really great question! If you were dining at the highest levels, you would not put crackers into any soup. Hopefully the crackers will be very soft, and very easily picked up in eaten with your spoon. Sending very best wishes for a super evening! Warmest regards, Heidi 💕🥣

Hello! Thank you for watching and asking such an observant question! I love playing "detective" and determining the menu by merely looking at the table setting. So, in this video, I am on the soup course--the smaller outside fork indicates another course, perhaps a salad, then the larger inside fork and knife are meant for the main course. I hope this helps! Only animals put their face in the bowl or plate. Where do you get this stuff (scoop away from you)? It's not in any of my vintage Gentleman's etiquette books. Also, unless you're at home, you can leave the last bit in the bowl. Wealthy people (Gentlemen) can afford to leave some soup for the butler to give to the dog.
Hello Tom L! Thank you for watching and asking such a great question. I have attended several different etiquette schools around the world, and the accepted way to eat soup--in the Western world and at the highest levels, e.g., you're at a state dinner or dining wth royalty; you scoop away from you when eating soup. Many organizations spend weeks teaching soup etiquette--you can get into the weeds with this one--different kinds of soups, different spoons, etc., It's a whole thing. I can offer some great etiquette books, if you like, about soup, in particular. Having said all of that--etiquette is really about being a kind and respectful person, and if you don't follow the soup etiquette rules completely, well, what the heck, as long as you're kind. Wishing you an amazing day! I'd love it if you'd subscribe! Warm regards, Heidi💕🥣
Hello Heidi! Another great video here 🙏🏻 Are there any books on soup etiquette you would recommend? When finishing the soup, make sure to tilt the bowl away from you to get the last of the soup. Very important.
Hello James!
Thank you so much for watching and leaving a comment! Yes, an informal situation, tilting the ball is perfectly fine. However, if you are dining with royalty or at a state dinner, I would just leave the bowl on the table and do the best I could with the ball in a static position.
But when you’re at home or in formal dining, gosh, be reasonable, have some fun and enjoy your soup!

Now, this settles it. My wife and I were arguing about the proper way to eat soup. Thank you.
Good tip. Thanks.
Thank you!!!
I love soup, but usually I have lots of big chunky vegetables in mine. Is the soup etiquette the same? It probably needs a huge spoon right?

The 18th century rhyme to teach children etiquette "Like ships that go out to sea, I spoon my soup away from me."

When using gumbo spoons for bouillabaisse, how can you sip pieces of seafood from the side of the round spoon?
Great question I guess the simple answer is, discreetly.
However, I totally get your point sometimes big gumbo, stews, etc.,it’s can be difficult to skip from the side of the spoon, even a large and in those cases, be reasonable, and do what you need to do with as much discretion and elegant as you can. The bottom line is she want to enjoy a lonely, fool, gumbo, stew, chili, so just use your best banners and be very aware of your surroundings. If it’s an informal setting them, don’t however, if it’s a bit more horrible, then just do the best you can.

Mam when we can drink this soup.. Before food or after food?
Can I make any noise while sipping the soup
Do you always say “excuse me” after swallowing each mouthful?
Hello! Thank you for watching!, No, I don’t say excuse me before every bite at home or when Dining in general, I just did that because I felt as if eating in front of the audience, could seem a bit rude, and I would excuse myself while I take a bite. my intentions were to be polite.

How do you eat a rustic soup?
Hello and thanks for watching! Great question! Usually rustic type soups or stews, are served with a larger soup spoon, to make it easier to eat the soup, basically the same way it would any other soup. I’ve seen some spoons for more substantial soups, that are very large, and this more helpful when eating soups like this. It is interesting when you get into all the different types of soup spoons. Broth type soup usually have a smaller round bowled spoon, as compared to the larger oblong bowl of the spoon for heartier soups.
I hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching, and please tune in to some other videos and ask any other questions !💕💕💕🥣

Can stir the soup. While eating

Hi! What if it's a thick butternut squash...so it doesn't exactly pour into you mouth?
Hello, Brooklyn!
Thank you for watching and for the great question. Big, hearty soups should have a bigger spoon, more oval than round, and it's the same--scoop away and then bring it to your mouth. But, sometimes, you have a small spoon, and the soup is extra thick--in this case, just be reasonable and do the best you can with what you have to work with. Etiquette is really about being a kind and caring person; do that, and the rest will be okay, even super thick soup!

What if it is a soup filled with meat and vegetables, served in a soup plate? I spoon the soup away from me, still. Is that correct?
What soup spoon do I use for a soup with meat and vegetables? What about something like beef bourgignone?
Hope this helps a little bit,
Sending your very best wishes for a lovely weekend!
Warmest regards,
Heidi.

Hello!!
Thank you so much for watching, and leaving a comment!
Do you know soup is really scary when you’re trying to engage with the highest forms of etiquette! It said that children of royalty can spend weeks on soup etiquette! Not sure if that’s true or not but it’s plausible, when you think about how difficult it is. My best advice is keep trying, and practice makes perfect. What's the difference when you scoop inward and outward? It dont make sense to me.
Ah I'm glad you showed me how to eat soup, I've been using a fork all this time 🤷♂️
I'm okay with everything except having to bring the soup spoon all the way up to my mouth with just a little smidge of soup in it.
What about a soup with crackers? How do you eat that?
Hello Annabelle!
Thanks so much for watching, and asking a really great question!
If you were dining at the highest levels, you would not put crackers into any soup.
However, regarding in formal dining, there are crackers made just for soup like oyster crackers, and others, and, you would eat the soup just the same as you would any other soup, with your spoon. Hopefully the crackers will be very soft, and very easily picked up in eaten with your spoon.

I wish UA-cam existed back in the 80's, when I had a rich boss, so occasionally ate at formal meals. Having tomato soup today, made me wonder why soup spoons were so large as to be uncomfortable to get completely inside my mouth. Now I know!
I learned how from watching the movie Pride and Prejudice.
Why do have 2 forks ????
Please watch some of our other videos. I'd love to hear your thoughts, and I'd be grateful if you'd kindly subscribe.

But the soup is super hot from the middle of the bowl. Why don’t eating from the side
Thank you, I’m a female and my grandpa said I eat soup like a mountain man. Not anymore
But why? How did that become the "proper" way?
Hello! You ask a super question! This goes back for hundreds of years and has become tradition. Etiquette is about honoring tradition, yet always evolving and staying modern. So when you eat soup, this is the proper way, however if you have a big hardy stew then be reasonable how you handle your spoon.
Thanks so much for watching, I’d love to hear what you think about some other videos! 💕🥣
