To answer your question, this song was written by Kevin (the beatboxer) and Avi (the bass), with some additions by Mitch for his parts. In the section after the drop, Kevin is doing throat singing while Avi is providing the percussive sounds.
The thing about the recording of Aha! live in Singapore at the Star Vista, is that it was made on a fan cam. The audio and visual are both pretty sketchy, and the program goes off script on a couple of levels, so you need to be a true Pentaholic to recognize what you're actually witnessing. You need to know the power of Avi's bass, and the customary shyness of Mitch when performing. It helps if you can hear Kevin's beatboxing, even though he isn't in the frame. It's an epic Pentatonix performance with only this single recording to affirm that it ever happened, and for those of us who love them, it's just gold.
I have to say that I'm not mad about the fan cam recording. Regardless of whether or not it was professionally recorded, it is out of this world amazing. I've seen other live performances of this song and there isn't another one as good as this - in my opinion. However, I personally think the best way to truly experience this song is to first listen to the original Aha! By Imogen Heap, then the official PTX video of it, and finish it off with the Singapore performance. Especially the official video really showcases Avi's overtones whereas you can't really hear them well in the live video. Again, just my opinion. You will definitely get Mitch slapped, but also you'll be shocked at Avi as well... Avi-slapped???... Especially is you listen for the overtones, as Avi can literally sing two notes at the same time. When you hear kind of a high pitched alien sound while full bass is being sung, it's Avi doing both parts, and not because of looping or layering.
I’d also recommend Run to you and Light in the hallway, my two favorites of their originals! And you have to check out Gold, Aha, Say something and their Evolution of videos!
They continue to innovate and stretch the boundaries of voice. The people who signed them right after the sing off dropped them, because they said there’s no market for a cappella music. 93 million albums sold, 6 billion views on UA-cam alone. I think they’re on their 2nd world tour, every show sold out. I bet that guy’s fired. They became a UA-cam act and never looked back and never looked better
I knew you'd enjoy this and find it fascinating! Glad you did. An announcement today came from The Grammys...PTX is nominated for a 4th Grammy...this time for their album Evergreen. As a producer, you might want to check out their 20 minute "Recording of Evergreen" which shows how the group work together to produce their amazing songs and how they do their production along with Ben Bram ( their long time friend and arranger) and Ed Boyer ( sound engineer). It's quite something!
I'd recommend you also watch the live - ua-cam.com/video/GyRiez6UKAI/v-deo.html This is a few years later, they performed it *off-mic* during a TV interview. Only Kevin had a mic and it was just a regular interview mic. They wrote this song. I believe it was primarily Kevin and Avi but the CD liner just says "Pentatonix" (later on they started listing specific members but some of their early songs just credit the group). Also, they almost always team up with industry writers now... but this one didn't list any. I think they might not have had any because this was before they got their big RCA contract.
I was going to suggest that too! This is one of my favourite of their originals and their originals are very under-rated. They should be played on the radio and be in the top 40 but they're mainly known for their covers.
if you're thinking about checking out aha! singapore it helps to watch their official music video for aha! first !!! its a really fun video (make sure to watch to the very end!) and great cover. and then the live version in singapore is just an entirely different beast... you'll see :^)
Yes...I second that! And there's also the live version of the 90's Dance Melody from the Hollywood Bowl just a few weeks ago, so he'd have something to compare it to.
Also Happy Now, Be My Eyes, Love Me When I Don't, Water, The Lucky Ones, Coffee In Bed, Never Gonna Cry Again, Petals, and there's a few more I can't think of right now.
I love when a knowledgeable reviewer takes time to teach something new. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Take all the time you want to help us understand why Pentatonix' music is so incredibly awesome.
So... PTX has secured another Grammy nomination...this time for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for Evergreen. And guys, this is a big one, as they are in competition with big names: Michael Bublé, Kelly Clarkson, Norah Jones and Diana Ross. Time for Matt to get his first one. Fingers crossed 🤞
They are so so fun because you will be amazed again and again. I think they are aliens from planet 🎶🎶🎶 A side note. Scott is famous for singing with his hands. So in this video they painted his fingers. Love it How about trying one of their insane Christmas songs. O Come All ye Faithful. I promise you have never heard it done like PTX They stripped down Kiera’s Gold to A Capella insanity. It’s live and I think you would love it. Listen to Kiera’s Gold first and then See what they did Aha is song by Imogene Heap. They have a cool spooky Halloween video of Aha which I recommend before you take on Aha at the Star Vista in Singapore.
Another reactor calls Mitch "The Problem Child" bc he blows his mind and is so unpredictable 😂 And you really need to check out Kevin Olusola's cover of "Down" for starters Much ❤ ~Pentaholic from Louisiana
I would like to go on record as agreeing wholeheartedly that he must absolutely go to KO's channel and listen to Kevin showing off with his KOver of "Down".... I have never seen anyone react to that who did not have their jaw hit the floor over & over & over! Lol!!!
Hi Tylr! I get such a kick from ur reactions!! What's fantastic is watching you struggle to come up with a way to put into words just how inhumanly talented & genius every one of these individuals are, coz each & every one of us have been there! It is hard to describe their ability to take our ears, our minds, our hearts & souls & inject them all with joy personified, & with no way to tell other ppl just how genius their music is (one just has to experience it to understand!) - their songwriting ability (yes, they write their originals along with their producer/friend Ben Bram, who also helps arrange all their other music (he is basically the 6th member!) - their VOCAL talents that go beyond what words can describe - their performing talent (the "trio"-Mitch, Kirstin & Scott) are great actors - If you have ever watched the hit series "Bones", there is an episode called "The Strike in the Chord" that they guest star in, playing members of an A capella group (shocker! HaHa!!) & their acting ability is superb! Also they collab with another amazing creator/artist called Todrick Hall in a video called "The Wizard of Ahhhhhs" that you need to put on your list of videos to react to!! But the biggest reason they are so awesome is because they are beautiful human beings - they are humble, kind, generous, loving - and they adore us Pentaholics & go above & beyond for their fans. I could give you countless examples of how wonderful they are, but it would take hours. I will give you 1 example. Last year on their Christmas tour, they performed a concert in Louisville, Kentucky (I was there that night) and the night before there had been a lot of deadly & destructive tornadoes about 50 miles away from the venue, & during the concert they had a moment of silence for the victims of the storms & announced that they were donating the proceeds from that night's concert to help the survivors of the tornadoes rebuild. That is just the kind of ppl they are. Lastly, if you react to "Aha", PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do the Official Video FIRST, and then do the live version!!! It would be a great double reaction & I can pretty much guarantee you that all the Pentaholics will be down for that!!!! I am seriously enjoying your Ptx journey!!!! Thank you for your appreciation of our beloved Pentatonix!!! 💜💜💜💜💜
This type of music (more toward analog techno) is Mitch's favorite genre of music! So much so that he has a solo project of original music under the artist name of Messer...so if you ever want to see what music Mitch creates as a solo artist ❤️ the most popular song is Machine and the newest song is Leather 👍
On the 9th performance on The Sing Off back in 2011, PTX did Usher’s OMG. It started with Avi doing “Let the beat drop” just like will.I.am did. Except as Shawn Stockman said, “will.I.am had to use EQs and Outboards” whereas Avi just used his voice.
I really LOVE your Pentatonix reactions! I love how you go back over the parts that impress you, and how you share your expertise with us, and how you enjoy their skill and creativity as much as we do. This song was written by them (Kevin and Avi were the most prolific songwriters), and they really outdid themselves capitalizing on each member's superpowers. Bass rumbles for Avi, head notes for Mitch, alien-like effects for Kevin, and complex melodies, harmonies and background tones for Scott and Kirstie. Everybody gets to show off in this one!
Kevin did have to stop doing those awesome throat beats because they hurt his throat too much. But all the rest of those fun sound effects he does are great!!
Hi again- definitely you need to do Popspring 2016 first (3 originals and Evolution of Michael Jackson). Aha! Star Vista?.. Nope- I think you need to have at least 20 reactions under your belt, and you need to have watched the official mv. The 5 of them wrote this one by the way. They are all lyrical and musical geniuses.
TYLR, I love your teaching moments. More, please. I always say that Mitch has remarkable control of his timbre; I *think* that what I'm talking about is what you described as him applying an equalizer filter to his voice. Nice to know. A quick check online reveals that Mitch and Scott are listed as the songwriters for this one. Breaking news: Pentatonix has been nominated for a 2023 Grammy in the category "Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album" for their Christmas album _Evergreen._ It looks like the ceremony will be on February 5th if I'm reading the announcement correctly. With Christmas coming up next month this might be a good time for you to start listening to _Evergreen._ Also, there's a "Recording of Evergreen" video that I bet you'd love.
I always like to recommend the Popspring 2016 video. It's a live performance of three original songs plus their awesome "Evolution of Michael Jackson." Great reaction! Loving your PTX journey!
The Five Faces of New Pentaholics 1. The most common is the Mitch Slapped. Commonly found when Mitch is heard for the first time in Hallelujah, The Prayer, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, and doing Aha! at the Star Vista. 2. The Wide Eyed Look of Disbelief. Normally found when you hear their Wall of Sound. Found when listening to Mary Did You Know, Imagine, and Mad World. 3. The I Didn’t Want It to End face. Most commonly found after listening to the 90s Dance Medley. It can also be found after listening to all their medleys and evolutions. 4. The Teary Eyed Look. This is commonly found when listening to an emotional song of theirs or just the sheer beauty of their work. Commonly found when listening to Mary Did You Know, Hallelujah, Amazing Grace, Imagine, The Prayer, Prayers for This World and most especially Thank You. 5. The What Did I Just Hear Face. Happens when Pentatonix starts strong, or when you hear a really special note or Kevin sound. Is usually accompanied by rewinding the video or song to make sure your ears really heard what they heard. Those times are too many to list, but the most common rewind at the start moment is the beginning of Sound of Silence.
Thank you for breaking it all down. I know their arrangements are complicated and awesome but when you explain it. Makes their music even more awesome .
Ben Bram is Pentatonix's vocal arranger, collaborator, music producer, and engineer. He is considered the sixth group member. I am not sure what roll he had with Love Again, but he has been with the band since the beginning and had a lot to do with the arrangement of songs such as Daft Punk.
I didn't realize until I started watching reaction videos that Kevin is doing a throat bass in that first drop and throughout the first part of the second verse, which is just insane. 🤩
Please react to Amazing Grace (My chains are gone). Beautifully staged video with vocals that will bring you chills. A little surprise at the end with Kevin. You wont be sorry I promise. Also The Prayer is fantastic and showcases Mitch and Scott so well.
I have really been enjoying your trip down the pentatonix rabbithole. So far the most fun reactions ive seen and i really enjoy watching people find the joy in their music.
There are two other A Capella rabbit holes you can explore. Home Free and Voice Play. My favorite Home Free cover is "Man of Constant Sorrow", and my favorite Voice Play cover is "Hoist The Colors"
Aha! Singapore Star Vista is the clip that you want. There is another one done in Singapore but it is not the performance that every Pentaholic loves. Put your seatbelt on because this might blow you out of your chair : ) On a side note, I appreciate reactors who can analyze a song and explain some of the technical things that are going on to make the song so good.
Never apologise for giving people more understanding of how things are done. Your reactions are great. Look forward to seeing more pentatonix reactions.
Mitch is a huge fan of EDM. His current favorite band is Autechre. You might want to listen to some of the music Mitch records as _Messer_ . For several years now, their wardrobe stylist has been Candice Lambert (she also styles Kelly Clarkson and the lead singer for Garbage). There are "Behind the scenes" mini-documentaries for several of their videos, including Bohemian Rhapsody, that you would probably love.
You may want to check out their videos from The Sing Off. They do Video Killed the Radio Star by the Buggles and they add some cool effects in that song. Aw, go ahead and watch the whole set of songs there. It shows you how Pentatonix got their start and showed even then such amazing talent. It is the same show that put Home Free on the map. Oh? Don't know Home Free either? React to their video of Man of Constant Sorrow, then maybe their Butts Medley. The current state of acapella is awesome.
I'd rec their 90s Dance Medley next! theres a video and they also performed it at the Hollywood Bowl this year, there's a HQ video of that on Miles Reuben's channel :) it would be fun if you did a double reaction just to compare the studio and the live versions :) and before you do Aha live please listen to the studio version, cause the live video everyone wants you to watch is really low quality, it was recorded on a cell phone in 2016 i believe. There are better versions out there including this years Hollywood Bowl performance, if you still wanna see it live
I love the fact that you take teaching moments, especially with an often misunderstood musical genre such as EDM. Something I would like to contribute to your teaching moment if I may. Many EDM producers miss the mark on an important human element, which is how we absorb sound. The threshold of hearing, the noise floor, and the head room go overlooked. So when the music is released it can feel tinny and anemic. The threshold of hearing of the human ear ranges from about 100 Hz to 12 kHz. What makes this so special is the fact that it's vocal music. No matter how vocal music is produced, it is impossible to step outside the threshold in either direction. That leaves room to cut frequencies and expand the bandwidth. It's also hard to break through the head room if you are working with dynamics on only vocals. The compressors and gates are crucial elements to mixing EDM. Btw...the reason Kevin's kick and snare are so solid is likely due to some pre-delay...about 5 or 6 ms.
The Human 808 for the win! 😅 This is my absolute favorite though. As much as I love Daft Punk, this is better in about every way, IMO. Appreciate getting to take this journey with you, it's always a good time!
Run to You (also an original) would be a great follow up to this. Complete opposite direction, but its literally one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard.
With a lot of their studio recordings, especially one like this one, you have to give a lot of credit to the producer who mixes and puts vocal effects adds layers to fill out the sound. That's a big part of what makes it sound so good. I actually prefer watching live recordings or their less produced songs like their "Evolution of..." videos where it's nothing but their raw voices recorded in one take with no cuts. Those kind of videos take away all of the post-production and just display the raw talent of their voices.
I really love the teaching moments! I enjoy reactors who are not only clearly really enjoying the music, but picking up on things I never noticed before (not being a musician myself). And who then share that knowledge with us. I think you might be ready for Aha! Singapore. It melts everyone's brain. Long as you go in prepared for that, you should be good.
It's really amazing to have a music producer reacting. You r able to give different insights. Don't apologise for replaying bits ... I will take PTX any way I can. LOL
I’m excited for you to see Aha live from Singapore. It’s a phone video, which normally isn’t great, but you gotta watch that one specifically. There is no way to explain why, until you see it. I’m so excited I get to see them live tomorrow night.
Whee you are talking about equalise their voice the song that I think of when you explain this "dance of the sugar plum Fairy" and it is where Mitch goes he's highest
These are awesome! I rec. 90s Dance medley next! For Christmas i love their version of the Grinch it's just so fun. Wizard of Ahhhs with Todrick hall is great too.
Scott and Mitch were a duo called SuperFruit (though they haven't made any new content in a while). They have a lot of great content, though. I would recommend GUY.EXE, Rise (the Katy Perry song), and anything else they've done.
No, you're not ready for "Aha! Singapore Star Vista," but you may as well go ahead and do it anyway because you'll never be "ready." I could describe "Aha! Singapore Star Vista" in minute detail for you, and it still wouldn't prepare you for it. So I'll put it this way. Remember the first Mitch-slap you received? And the second? And Mitch's guitar solos in "Bohemian Rhapsody"? And the first time you noticed Avi's incredible bass? And the second time? Add those all together and multiply by ten. *That* is "Aha! Singapore Star Vista."
Love your reactions so far! Now that you've discovered Pentatonix, I *HIGHLY* recommend taking a side road and checking out Home Free. Another awesome acapella group with a strong influence from the country music genre. Start with what is probably their most well-known song, "Man of Constant Sorrow". You won't be disappointed!!!
I am thoroughly enjoying watching you go deeper and deeper into the Pentatonix rabbit hole. The other original that I think is off of this album is titled sing. You will also like their upgrade because Pentatonix doesn't do covers they do upgrades to Can't Hold Us. There's a very pleasant surprise there and you will get it slapped. Someone made the comment about watching the video of aha. I don't think you're ready yet. When you do react to it first do the official music video which was done very early on in their career and then listen to the live version from the Star Vista in Singapore at the star Vista. Because you mentioned dubstep and there costumes you might want to watch their upgrade of Imagine Dragons Radioactive. There's a violinist in there named Lindsay Sterling who Dubsteps and does ballet and all kinds of dance moves while playing the violin and she Nails it every time. Lindsey Stirling is in I think three of their music videos . She is one you really want to pay attention to . She doesn't sing she plays the violin . Check out her song Shattered . You'll love the effects on the video and Lzzy Hale from Halestorm does the vocals and she knocks it out of the park . Kevin also plays the cello and it's in that video. So they do have songs that have Kevin playing the cello. Although it's early on here are three videos that were done as solos. Kevin on his channel KO cover of Marian Hills down. Avi's single change on the rise of which everything you hear in it he's done. Scott just released a video titled Mars which is just breathtaking. Yes they do right all of their music. The album The Lucky Ones has all original songs. Mitch goes higher so I would check out Can You Feel The Love Tonight. Scott and Mitch had a group together early on in their career . It is called Superfruit . Check out Defying Gravity and you really will get Mitch slapped . I would also check out rise and they have three other singers in it. It's a very emotional piece . It Was Written after the shooting at the Pulse Nightclub in Miami which is a gay club . Don"tworry about having to take the video back cuz you want to hear something again. There are a lot of reactors who pull it all the way back to the beginning. I love the teachable moments and the channels of Voice coaches that I listen to do the same thing and it's very very interesting.

I’m fascinated with Mitch’s facial expressions. He is so into the lyrics
This one's a banger, but my absolute favorite of their originals is "Sing!". It's just full of pure joy and I love it so much.
I concur
I was just about to suggest Sing! I can't listen to it without instantly being in a good mood!
Definitely my favorite as well!

Nope- I think you need to have at least 20 reactions under your belt, and you need to have watched the official mv. The 5 of them wrote this one by the way. They are all lyrical and musical geniuses.
Aha Singapore might put him in a coma, it's too soon!! lol
I frigging LOVE when new people listen to this! Makes my day every time..
I always like to recommend the Popspring 2016 video. It's a live performance of three original songs plus their awesome "Evolution of Michael Jackson." Great reaction! Loving your PTX journey!
The Five Faces of New Pentaholics
Hay Tyler is your mind blown yet. Pentatonix. Best group I've Heard in a very very long time. From UK 🇬🇧👍👍🦋
Kevin and Avi wrote most of their original music.
I love all your Pentatonix's reaction.!!!
Literally just found your channel and started your ptx reactions! Perfect timing for a new upload
I love your break downs, explanations & excitement.
Dunno if you noticed, but there's a part where Mitch is singing as if his tongue is numb and I love it so much
After all these years, I still love Scott's black plague fingers. 🤣
I really appreciate your reactions and especially your “teaching moments”. Thank you for becoming a part of the Pentatonix family!
You just HAVE to watch some of their live performances. You won’t believe it!!!
Be My Eyes is another wonderful original.
Do imagine it will bring it out to tears
There are two other A Capella rabbit holes you can explore. Home Free and Voice Play. My favorite Home Free cover is "Man of Constant Sorrow", and my favorite Voice Play cover is "Hoist The Colors"
🎉🎉 Yaaaay!! You did it!!
Thank you for sharing your time with us. ☮️
They write their own stuff collaboratively. They are AMAZING!!
They are absolutely genus’s. Their holiday album from last year just got a Grammy nomination yesterday.
Recommend their 90s Dance Medley.
If you think THIS original is catchy, wait until you see "Sing"
You may want to check out their videos from The Sing Off. They do Video Killed the Radio Star by the Buggles and they add some cool effects in that song. Aw, go ahead and watch the whole set of songs there. It shows you how Pentatonix got their start and showed even then such amazing talent. It is the same show that put Home Free on the map. Oh? Don't know Home Free either? React to their video of Man of Constant Sorrow, then maybe their Butts Medley. The current state of acapella is awesome.
A cappella EDM🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I'd rec their 90s Dance Medley next! theres a video and they also performed it at the Hollywood Bowl this year, there's a HQ video of that on Miles Reuben's channel :) it would be fun if you did a double reaction just to compare the studio and the live versions :)
and before you do Aha live please listen to the studio version, cause the live video everyone wants you to watch is really low quality, it was recorded on a cell phone in 2016 i believe. There are better versions out there including this years Hollywood Bowl performance, if you still wanna see it live
They did!
Your reaction face is priceless
There's is a live version of this song where they sound exactly the same. Kevin was amazing. It was just in front of a camera back stage somewhere.
Avi looks so friggin hot in this video. Ties with his look in “Where are You Now” cover. -this coming from a Mitch stan
I love this song, So Underrated ❤
Great reaction. Most music producers use 808's... PTX uses a KO8! Much love and keep on keepin on J.
Please react to their original "Sing!" Instant happiness when you listen to that song 🥰
Kevin and Avi wrote this song for Mitch, who is a fan of EDM
I love that you’re reviewing their original music! A lot of reaction channels concentrate more on their covers
Popspring 2016 is a real treat!! Try that! You get 3 original and an Evolution of Michael Jackson.
It's really amazing to have a music producer reacting. You r able to give different insights. Don't apologise for replaying bits ... I will take PTX any way I can. LOL
we ran out of superlatives to describe this group a LONG time ago
I always recommend their Evolution of... videos. They are live medleys and insanely awesome. All of them! Great reactions ☺️
I’m excited for you to see Aha live from Singapore. It’s a phone video, which normally isn’t great, but you gotta watch that one specifically. There is no way to explain why, until you see it. I’m so excited I get to see them live tomorrow night.
My favorite original of theirs! So impressive! Thanks for reacting to it!
Short notes are staccato. Thanks for the explanation.
Whee you are talking about equalise their voice the song that I think of when you explain this "dance of the sugar plum Fairy" and it is where Mitch goes he's highest
If you want another original please, please do Sing. I defy anyone to watch it and keep still!
These are awesome! I rec. 90s Dance medley next! For Christmas i love their version of the Grinch it's just so fun. Wizard of Ahhhs with Todrick hall is great too.
I recommend their cover of Gold.
You have a beautiful smile. I think you can now class yourself as a pentaholic
In the video live again. The contract lenses didn't agree with Avi,'s eyes
From UK 🇬🇧👍
If you want your mind blown with EDM type music listen to Gold. It is one of my favorites. Take into count it was done in one take.
Imagine if they did a cover of take me higher… you might have to swap your intro out then for what im sure would be Mitch slappin us all again haha
Hahahaha! Mitch slapped again. 😄
Scott and Mitch were a duo called SuperFruit (though they haven't made any new content in a while). They have a lot of great content, though. I would recommend GUY.EXE, Rise (the Katy Perry song), and anything else they've done.
You just got "Mitch slapped"!
No, you're not ready for "Aha! Singapore Star Vista," but you may as well go ahead and do it anyway because you'll never be "ready."
I could describe "Aha!
If you Love this you should also watch VoicePlay, They are very Theatrical in their songs.
You should also react to their live performance of AHA in Singapore, Star Vista.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Crazy....just not normal.....agreed magic lol.
Facsinating
