I thought I had a serious problem, but it seems to have mainly been the result of peeing at the slightest inclination. After just a week, I'm doing much better. Thanks!

Oh good advice. I have a spinal injury circa 1978. My specialist advised me to try and consume 3liters water each day. This has worked. I’m experiencing less UTIs. I am walking on crutches, and more sedentary than I’d like. This results in swollen legs. I’m a heavy coffee drinker too. On average by bladder hold 450mll. I’m going to take your advise, drink coffee before 2pm and stop fluids 4hrs before sleep. Yesterday I forgot my normal fluid intake, and as a result urinated about 600ml without much urgency. Your information is very useful and I shall run more experiments and see if my own condition changes.

At what intervals do you recommend is enough to stop retraining your bladder? 3 hours? 4 hours? 5 hours? This video seems to be the final missing piece that ties all the other steps together and starts to help immediately with leaks once your pelvic floor muscle is strong enough to suppress an urge. If suppressing an urge to urinate over strains your muscle like it did me , you need to continue pelvic exercising to get it a bit stronger then return to this step.

Some good ideas presented, but no mention about the intake of fluids and getting that on a schedule too. As an example, I like a couple of coffees early in the day, but maybe they should be spaced out over the full morning which may potentially result in longer times between emptying the bladder as well.

    I have several questions:
    * How far/long should the duration of the interval be increased over time? There has to be a limit to the duration of the interval.
    * What is considered a “normal” interval between pees. This would also vary depending on climate and exercise?
*What about during the night whilst sleeping? Do I still set an alarm to wake to pee at the prescribed intervals?
*What if I wake with an urge to pee but the interval hasn't finished. Do I lay awake in bed holding back the pee?
I request an answers from @Dr Eric Leckie DPT please. A phone call to discuss isn't a good option as I'm in Australia. 🙂

Depending on how much you drink, obviously the more fluids you drink the faster your bladder will fill up and the less you drink it will take longer to fill up, but an average person who is hydrated right should be peeing between 3 to 5 times a day

I just had a radical prostatectomy. I know I need to be drinking water so please explain the right amount of water to drink during these intervals. I am now off of the catheter only 4 days, and I am drinking 16 oz per 6 hour period beginning at 6 am. I stop around 6pm. If I try to go to bed with no water, I wake up with horrible bladder spasms. Any thoughts? I am now to the point where I drink the 4.5 oz on an hour, but have to pee every hour. That's a huge improvement, but I'd like to know where to go from here.

Thanks for reaching out! I can’t give a definitive diagnosis online without a full assessment however it’s likely that someone in your situation is dealing with overactive (tight) pelvic floor muscles, potentially interfering with your ability to empty the bladder. Please go for a check up with your doctor and also watch my video that I will link below teaching you how to stretch your pelvic floor muscles. Let me know if this helps 💪

When I get the urge doesn't that mean I have a full bladder? and if I hold it in until my next schedule to pee it will stretch my bladder which I heard could be a bad thing? I drink water in-between my schedules, but I don't know how much water I should be consuming, because if I drink too much it will lead me to going to the bathroom sooner than the scheduled time? I found this 'not' very helpful at all, as it is completely about calculations of frequency and so forth. I would resonate much more with energetic techniques (ie. Qigong, meridian points, and exercises of that nature, as example). This approach seems to leave all of that out of the equation, which I would deem most important. Your 'tracking' methods could be an adjunct, but I don't see it as getting to the point of an energetic system 'imbalance', that I feel other modalities could provide.

Hey there! Thanks for the comment. Firstly, if you can't empty your bladder this can become a medical emergency so please keep a close eye on it and go to hospital immediately if you can't start the flow and empty your bladder. In the interim, try pelvic floor stretches to see if that gives you relief. Hi Doctor! I have a weird issue if you could kindly guide me. I have started bladder training recently.
My comfort zone is around 200 ml. Till this amount I can essily reach the toilet and urinate.
After this I can hold on till I get a sudden strong urge and this could be anywhere between 270 ml and 370 ml.
Now there's a weird zone between 200 ml and the final urge. I can hold on with increasing discomfort above 200 ml but as soon i decide to go to the bathroom, I get a very strong urge. The strength of this urge depends on how far I was from the perceived final urge by the bladder. For example yesterday i was sitting comfortably and I decided I should pee and got a really strong urge near the washroom door. My urine volume was only 250 ml. Two days ago I had held on for a while and then decided to go. I didnt feel any strong urge but when i measured the volume it was 270 ml.
This weird buffer zone between the complete comfort zone (200ml) and the final urge point bothers me because I could literallaly be holding comfortably 270 ml and it suddenly shoots the urge up when i decided to go.
I have been told that this could be a mental door in lock syndrome thing but the fact that it happens after 200 ml means that there is something more to it.
What I want to know is that while training the bladder should I hold onto the till final urge comes (anywherr between 270 and 370 ml) or should I wait for a certain point after 200 ml?
At around 200 ml I start getting constant signals to urinate which are not super uncomfortable and I can hold on beyond that.
My target is that I should be able to hold 350 to 400ml of urine without rushing to the bathroom due to strong urge as soon as I decide to go. When my bladder was not overactive, I could hold onto till about 400 ml and then go without experiencing a super strong urge when i decided to go.
I have no medical issues with bladder or kidneys.
My OAB issues started in Feb 2022. For two complete years preceeding my first urgency incident, I had been peeing just in case non stop. Like I would sometimes literally pee when there was less than 50 ml in my bladder due to urinary OCD and to get that "just right" feeling. I was at home with an attached bath during these two years. I have never been duly dehydrated paryicularly during winter my entire life. I highly doubt I would have urinated above 250 ml during this entire two year period. Even before 2020, I was a just in case peeir but due to academic or professional work or some other matters, I would sometimes hold my bladder till max, but after Jan 2020, that was never the case.
The other factor worth mentioning is that I took an antidepressant by the name of Tretol (sertraline). I took it just for two days and it wreaked havoc on my body with side effects like weird stool, jaw clenching and shaking etc. I didnt experience urgency immediately but just 15 days after taking that medicine I had my first urgency incident. The side effects of the medicine didnt last for more than two days since i stopped taking it immediately and like i said urinary urgency didnt occur till 15 days later.
So how long after 200 ml should I hold my urine so that my comfort zone where i can calmly go to pee can expand? Thanks a ton in advance!
