  • Tired of the gas smell in your Amazon? I was so I did something about it! This is my adventure replacing the fuel tank in my 1965 Volvo 122s Amazon.
    I’ll give you a sneak peek for BBB the next episode. After I filled up the tank I went to a friends house, and he noticed a leak. We looked underneath the car and about half the fuel line was leaking from tiny pinhole’s. Those must’ve shown up after I cleaned out the fuel line, and because I had never filled the tank there was never any pressure in the hose. Now I know!

      Super easy. The hardest part was aligning the screw holes. An auger took care of that. The Wagon is a bit harder, but not much.

    Next time you need to empty your gas tank, there is a bolt on the bottom of the tank remove it, and then remove the gas cap to let air in, and drain the gas out in a pan. These are fun cars to work on.

    I can't seem to find the "next installment" video. What importance did the fuel tank drain ultimately have? Going to be replacing my 122's fuel tank here soon and had to ask :-) Love that you took the time and effort to put these videos out there!

      After I put the fuel tank in, I went and drove around a bit, and there was approximately 125,000 holes in the fuel line. I was at a friends house leaking into his driveway, so we very quickly use the drain plug to let out enough fuel so that the level was below the fuel line in the tank. So in that instance, the dream was very important. I ended up replacing the fuel line and all is well. I think with any classic car to get from now on the fuel system is just going to get replaced immediately.

      @@Misunderstoodboygenius Oh wow! That is wild - thanks for sharing and the quick response. I guess I went cheap/lazy and only ordered the tank. I might have to reconsider the hard line as well. Cheers!

    Thank you for the video on this process. The trick with the jack helped me get my fuel tank out! Unfortunately the new tank I got were slightly different than the one installed in my Volvo. The filler neck didn't fit, as it was wider towards the tank. Solved that by cutting away some of the metal in the trunk body panel, but then found out the angle is off too... Looks like I have to restore my old tank and reinstall it.

      Glad I could help. That’s very odd. I did have to nudge mine around to get it to fit. What year?

      @@Misunderstoodboygenius I got an Amazon from 1958, 4 door sedan. The screw holes will line up on the floor. One screw will end up below the wider fill neck, but that isn't a huge problem. I see there's a second hole to the left of it that clears the neck, but the floor doesn't have the screw hole. The neck angle is slightly taller, making it hit the top of the outer hole before it is resting on the trunk floor. The tank end up sitting in the trunk at an angle.

      @@togst I’m sure it’s because it’s older. The early models are just different enough from the later models. I think 1963 or so. I’m not sure if anyone makes an early fuel tank, but I’ve never had to research myself.

      @@Misunderstoodboygenius Probably. The 50s cars look similar, but at the same time isn't. The parts dealer did write that the models with B16 engine might need slight modification. I would assume cutting away some sheet metal in the trunk for the filler neck falls under "slight modification". However, now that I have studied the fuel tank a bit more, it could appear that it is bent. I can feel the tank sheet metal on the top sway downward towards the fill neck. Can't really see it unless you have the right angle with good light, but can be felt with the fingers.

    These new tanks from Taiwan don't have the baffle in front of the filler neck like the original, I guess to keep fuel from surging against the cap during acceleration. All these tanks (544, Amazon, 1800) seem to be made by the same factory in Taiwan no matter who you buy them from.

    • @Misunderstoodboygenius
      @Misunderstoodboygenius  Рік тому

      That’s too bad. Might actually did have the baffle. I got mine through VP auto parts.

    Thank you for posting this video. I appreciate the time you spent doing it.
    I have a 1970 p1800. I have fuel smell in the car and my car lacks power when I drive it. I have been told it is the sludge in the fuel tank and not enough fuel getting to the injectors. I will order the tank from IPD. I will also rust proof the trunk. One question. Where is the fuel pump?

    • @Misunderstoodboygenius
      @Misunderstoodboygenius  3 роки тому

      On the FI 1800 it’s on the right hand side of the tank I believe. I’d check that and your filter and injectors. If it’s sat for a while it could have displaced rust in the fuel and that can coat and build up in the injectors. They can be cleaned. This video is actually pretty good way to do that ua-cam.com/video/-V8CLDNi7WA/v-deo.html

    How come the fuel pipe is so high? Half way up the tank? How does it get fuel when you're low on fuel?

    • @Misunderstoodboygenius
      @Misunderstoodboygenius  2 роки тому +1

      It’s actually braised in, and there’s a pick up that goes down into the tank. Instead of a pipe coming up from the bottom with a little bit of a tip on it so it doesn’t pick up the absolute bottom, it has a house that goes down inside the tank to almost the bottom.
