  • In the world of bass fishing, there are a few baits bass never tire of, and a walking topwater bait is one of them. We caught up with Brandon Card for an early morning lesson on fishing walking baits. He shares several pointers on working the bait as well as equipment recommendations for getting the best performance.

    -Yo-Zuri Super Braid Dark Green, 40lb: wired2.fish/Su...
    -Yo-Zuri Top Knot 100% Fluorocarbon, 30lb (for leader): wired2.fish/To...
-Abu Garcia Veracity Casting Rod, 7' Medium: wired2.fish/Ab...
-Abu Garcia REVO MGX Casting Reel, 8.0:1: wired2.fish/RE...
Quality walking baits are versatile tools that perform in both calm and wind conditions. Brandon explains how to adjust your retrieve based on the circumstances; in calm conditions, a gentle rod pull smoothly engages the bait, whereas a more aggressive snap is key to creating commotion in the wind. Card strongly advises using a braided mainline to a short fluorocarbon leader, for it allows you to control the bait with little hesitation. Lastly, he shares exact line specs and general guidance for selecting a rod and reel for the job.

I been lucky enough to meet Brandon Card and was at one of his seminars. There is not a better bite than a topwater bite. Got to be my favorite way to catch them. Thanks for sharing the video with us.

I've never had mono stretch to the point of not being able to walk a bait. I'm of the opinion visability is key top water fishing, braid looks like a rope with blue bird sky as back drop. I'm not the pro this guy is, he obviously knows his craft. Agree to disagree I suppose.

I find braid too much of a headache with a topwater walking bait because it always wants to get wrapped around one of the treble hooks.

That's why using a short leader is important.

Never had a issue with straight braid. Never had it wrapping up with the hooks unless my bait tumbles mid air. If your wrapping up hooks maybe downsize your front one. I always upsize my rear hook too as big as I can get it without being able to tangle with the other treble hooks.

I love fall on Guntersville for throwing walking baits. I have much more success with the one knocker Spook around the dying grass than I do with frogs in the grass. I use a medium action rod and have had more luck after switching to braid instead of mono in terms of landing the fish that hit. With the soft rod and the stretchier line just couldn't get good hook sets, with the braid I just pull with the rod and reel down and I'm able to get the hooks to bite just fine. Also the bass tend to bury themselves in the grass and the braid seems to do better when I have to horse them out.

Seriously, the mono isn’t going to stretch when you’re popping a walking bait. The lure probably weighs less than an ounce. I call BS.

It's definitely easier to work a topwater bait with braid imo. Much more responsive .

@@donnie017 Straight braid it definitely does, i use a short mono leader tied to a snap so it doesn't wrap and added a bit of shock absorption.

I agree, the stretch in mono when working a walking bait is negligible... but I get better action on a walking bait using braid than mono. It seems the mono being stiffer tends to pull the bait a little between jerks whereas braid gives the lure complete slack.
