BassFishingHQ is dedicated to teaching people how to catch more and bigger bass. I will go over different bass fishing tips & techniques that will put more fish in the boat or on the shore. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned tournament angler, my goal is to help you catch more bass.
As mainly a pond/small lake fisherman, I find that the popper is better for fishing around structure because of the ability to work it slowly, but the spook has more drawing power and it's easier to cover water with it. I tend to fish the spook more, mostly just because it's fun to fish and it gets insane blowups. Thanks for sharing these tips!
I started topwater using plugs and poppers, but you have to have patience which I gradually lost the more I have fished.
Both lures have their place, and you can’t go wrong with either one. That said the Popper for me is better used in “niche” situations, more so than the Zara Spook. Although any topwater bass lure is better used in special situations I’ll almost ALWAYS prefer the classic Zara Spook. Topwater Bass fishing is my all time favorite and I’ll find any excuse to tie on a topwater no matter the time of year. Topwater bass fishing is a blessing and a curse. Over the past 5 years I’ve delved way beyond deep into the rabbit hole that is Fly Fishing. Casting a dry fly on the waters surface for big wild trout has became the bane of my fishing existence. 💯
I GREATLY ENJOYED THIS VIDEO AND YOU NOW HAVE A NEW SUBSCRIBER!
Great explanation. I use the spook often. Rather than a popper I use a whopper plopper and work it like a walking frog.
I agree w/Kevin Stocks on the popping frog b/c of it’s versatility. Caught my PB on a frog before frogs were the thing. But there’s something about the action of walking the Spook that draws attention and triggers predatory fish. If you get the rhythm of your retrieve right, you’ll most likely draw an aggressive strike. I love walking the dog. It’s so much fun to see them zeroing in on your lure and tracking it. And then,
BOOM! Spook for the adrenaline rush, and frog for the cardiac arrest! 👍🏼🎣😎
...frogs have always been a thing for catching bass, LOL
I am a topwater fanatic My fisted for many years. I've done very well here in Arizona fishing tournaments. Let's talk. Fishing is number one that I fish you around or the season. I prefer to white top popper. I usually I change out the front hook and make it red and it's been such awesome lure for me. Everyone has a tournaments always say done top water didn't you all day long? My answer is Yes. I will continue topwater winter summer no matter when I start with that.DR
Thanks again, the popper paid off this morning, three biggest fish of the day hit the popper. What a blast.
Muddy water and in the dark I always use a long 3 hook spook, walk it with long walks then slow down after 3-5 ft and repeat. The clearer the water the clearer the spook I use and the faster I work it. If I don't get action on the spook I follow up with a blooper type popper within 5 seconds or so and do the bloop bloop thing, the Yo-Zuri works great, one bloop, rip 8:1 @ 1sec rotation 3ft, bloop.
Found in muddy water if you work a spook med-high speed they will miss it a LOT like 4 of 5 times. I i know one is waking behind it in muddy water I will just straight pull it slowly with no walk and get rear hook sets in the mouth most of the time. Another thing is ALWAYS in muddy water or in the dark cast the same place TWICE.
I use a Storm Chugbug , best of both worlds. Walk it or pop it depending on what the fish are telling you . When a bass blows up on a topwater but misses we call it a MaGoo ( yeah I’m old ) lol
Great info! Bill Dance has slayed em for years on that Pop R!
You just have a way of getting me excited to go fishing. My kayak and rods are loaded for an early morning south Florida adventure tomorrow. I just changed to a popper! Thanks for you excellent and motivating videos.
One of the Very Best explanations I have ever heard!!!
I started using a LC Gunfish and a Evergreen SB last year, best of both worlds
Fishing the upper Mississippi River, I use the spook jr for open water or next to grass lines, frog in slop however I have been throwing the pop-R style bait more often at targets.
The lake i live on is muddy with about 1in of visibility...hahha but ive been getting a lot of hits on the jitterbugs! Really enjoying the top water smashers!
I've caught more bass on poppers than walking baits but both are fun to fish!
My #1 topwater lure is the silver/blue chug bug (because you can walk it or pop it). Giant bass love/hate it!
I was just throwing the Spro e pop 80 last night on some schooling largemouth. Walking it really fast and giving it a few pops, caught a dozen in a couple hours. Main lake points near these open water balls of bait.
When do you throw the Whopper Plopper? Every time. one of the cool things about the popper is that, if you let it sit a bit before you start the retrieve, sometimes bass will bite it sitting still or after the first pop. Like they've been watching it warily, then it moves and they must kill it. The down side is you don't cover as much water with it as you would a Spook or WP.
They do the same with a spook and a whopper
Great video. You're a great teacher. Thanks for all you do.
Learned how to fish muddy water fishing grassy canals. Spooks work great in muddy shallow water. Slow, quick, short darts work best for me.
Living in FL, popper is wild. I just picked up a spook but no luck yet, granted I've used it twice. But also the whopper plopper works, they were dinks but such and easy bait to use haha. I prefer topwater because it's fun but if I'm not catchin em I'll switch to a jig or texas. Cheers man!
You're right about Florida Bass they hit the pop-r more than the spook , I did a test on a lake like you said they swoop at a spook but hammer a pop-r for some reason it just attracts them more I'm guessing the sound and motion but I don't think colors matter because they both were the same color of green gizzard shad it was crazy they preferred one bait over the other it's just their natural instincts, but awesome video , informative for sure 👍 !!!
Good video, I'd like to see a video on buzzbaits, my favorite.
I like to throw a popping frog. You can walk it or pop it. And no treble hooks to snag. There are times I throw a spook, just for the noise
My issue with the Spook is the standard one doesn't make enough noise. I like the Super Spook Jr. though.
How are we supposed to know what fish are keying in on not sure about what I'm looking for
I like the popper anytime I feel I need to really slow down the presentation. I use a spook when I want I feel like the bass are a bit more active. I'll fish a plopper when they are in a feeding frenzy. And, if all else fails, I break out a crank. lol
I always enjoy your videos. Are you still fishing tournaments? If so, which one? Thank you for in info!
Great content on your channel and this one was full of great info.
Caught my personal best smallmouth this year on a popper, just bought a spook today hope I’m as lucky with it
Best top water lure Whopper Ploppler 75 😎🤙
Had way more luck on the bigger sizes of the Plopper . I’ll throw a 130 before a 75 every time
@@Oldbasshole I think the 75 is a bit more versatile and as a different action then the other size. But your using one and probably agree that it is one of the best top water bait 🤙
@@patdud1979 it definitely makes a different “Plopper” sound . They all catch fish for sure
Mainly throw a Whopper plopped going to go to the popper more often. Most lakes I fish bluegill are main forage
Popper ftw for me. More finesse style bait imo.
i ordered the evergreen jt 95 and I love it
Pop-R
Yo! New subscriber. Love the channel brother
So I had a poper and fishing WTH it fa 20 minutes n nth happened so I switch to a red rattle lure that sink and the first cast I threw by a boat and start moving slow I caught a bowfin fish 3 pounds he was tough
I've used poppers in S. Florida and they seem to attract more gators than fish.
I like to use spook and windy day and choppy water and I have success
Great content. Length rod are you using for both?
? What is the best tool (long shank) to use for removing double teble hook lures from a fish's mouth or throat? I tend to fish lures LESS when they have double teble hooks on them. Getting myself hooked removing them is a major concern when using them. Any suggestions would be really expand my use of them. I currently use a pair of long nose pliers. Is there a BETTER OPTION? This was ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO! 😊 THANKS AGAIN .
fish grips and needle noise
@@fishinginkayaks I have both but it's when landing them and they are still twisting hard, that's when I'm most afraid of getting hooked. Thanks for your input and TIGHT LINES. ✌️
Remove the front treble hook. Over 95% of hookups are on the rear hooks. Very few hit the front hook first. It usually just snags the fish when you're reeling it in or out just flood around while you're pulling out the rear hook.
@@rodwesley2779 Thanks for the great tip! Yes, will definitely 👍 💯 try that 😊.
Tight Lines 🎣 To You Always. SHALOM SHABBAT.
Pop Arrrr ??
Why no split ring on the spook. Makes walking easier....
Frog or the lunker punker (glorified spook)
Pop R
Rico popper
Dude, a bass will hit a deadsticked black senko in 1” visibility water on a new moon. If you’re in shallow enough water, you’ll realize they even come from many feet away to do it. You’ll do just fine on a topwater lol
Dead calm water... popper.
Little wind/chop... spook jr.
"POP R"
Why are you saying popper like that....... stop it.
Because it’s a “Pop-R” not a “popper”
It triggers me how he says Popper
He's using the name of a very old and popular (pop-ular?) model called the Rebel Pop-R as a generic name. He tried to make this clear enough by sometimes referring to it as a Pop-R *type* of lure (any lure that's similar to a Rebel Pop-R), except there are probably lots of younger fishermen that have never heard of a Pop-R.
