A version of this video was originally uploaded on April 29, 2021. That version mistakenly said that the SNES soundchip uses subtractive synthesis. I decided to take it down as I wasn't comfortable with such a large mistake and how that point informed the direction of the video's narrative. This is a re-upload with that section fixed, as well as the removal of another line that many people were uncomfortable with.
I was confused as to why this was listed as uploaded on the 2nd, since I knew i had seen it prior :D . Curious about that other line that people were uncomfortable with. Looking forward to the next part !
@@YukiDelValle that's not what happened. It was the latino community who were upset with the usage. It can be seen as dismissive to their language and culture. Is this channel active anymore? I was wondering cuz there hasn't been an update in a year. Loved all these videos on game music and wish there was something like this still out there.
Some addendums: Red Book Audio did exist before 5th-gen consoles. The PC-Engine CD add-on made it somewhat mainstream in Japan, but elsewhere the only other console with Red Book quality was the Mega CD/Sega CD. This was not Koshiro's first foray into bringing house music to the Mega Drive. Previously he worked on Sega's Super Shinobi/Revenge of the Shinobi. The music in that game was such a delight he was brought back for Streets of Rage. I highly recommend checking out that games OST. The song China Town is among Koshiro's best work.
You're exactly right. Each video is a passion project. Unfortunately, the passion just isn't there for it at the moment. Life got real busy. I've been trying to focus less on a single project, and more on wherever my heart is leading me. At the moment I am working for a couple different UA-camrs as an editor and trying to make content a full-time gig. If/when that happens, maybe the passion will return. I definitely still have videos I want to make and ideas to explore with the channel.
I understand where you’re coming from. Life happens. Mostly, I’m just glad you’re well. I’d like to hear your opinions about a few other OSTs in the future. Stay safe
Just stopping by, so many months later, to say this video isn't getting the love it deserves and that's a damn shame. Spread the word, friends! Tell everyone you know about this channel, folks!!
I'll say it again: even in a massively compressed and bitcrushed state that 909 kick still *PUMPS* and it's that which separates this soundtrack from all other video game soundtracks.
Then the streets of rage 3 came. Its hardcore techno is inspired by german and like jeff mills hatdcore detriot Techno sound, but yuzo and motohiro made a groundbreaking program that auto generates music to achieve crazy rhythm's melodies and loud fm sounds.
Keep up the good work! Congrats for facing the mistake, though the vast majority of us didn't even realise about it. That shows a lot of love for the channel and for us subscribers.
I revisited the music of Bravely Default and, consequently, your channel. I am grateful for everything you have shared with us and hope you are happy with whatever you are doing now!
In Mexico, Sega was always small. Between 1992 and 1995, all my friends were given a SNES by their parents, except my friend Franciso, he was given a Sega master System (in January '92; I remember because I immediately asked my mom to buy me a game console, and she gave me a SNES for Christmas). It was the SNES what made me fall in love with games and specially their music. Music I would like to be mentioned sometime: Super Turrican 2, Contra 3, Super Metroid, Stardew Valley, Divinity Original Sin 2, Silent Hill 1, Mortal Shell (both its dark ambient soundtrack and its black metal soundtrack).
Another great video! So much work put into the non-game footage 😱. I know you’ve been struggling with work on this channel, but I appreciate every video!
That was an amazing video, man! I loved learning about the history of EDM and House Music and how it influenced Yuzo Koshiro when he composed the Street of Rage soundtrack.
i really want to hear more about streets of rage 2 please. This is one of the best videos on your channel, i know it seems like there's less views on it if you look at the other vids but this is incredible
Such an incredible and informative video. Loved the brief history on house music and the synthesizers that spawned those iconic sounds, thank you for this!
Just stumbled across this channel through the Bravely Default/Octopath analysis videos and found them absolutely fascinating. I think VGM is still largely underanalyzed/underappreciated for the amount of depth it contains, so I just wanted to stop by and thank you for your efforts in bringing them to a larger audience. I hope one day you'll have the time/motivation to make more videos!
I'm going to throw this on in the background as I make breakfast to make sure I give you that view again! Still a good video (presumably better even, with the changes!)
I could careless how much he lifted from the actual songs because Yuzo Koshiro's compositions in this series is still memorable and listenable to this day.
Great video - not only for the information and the analysis, but your production has gotten so much better over the last few years. You've come a long way since your watermusic video. All the little animations, the way text and still pictures move in and out, it's very nice for the eyes. Did you hire an editor or are you doing everything yourself?
Thank you, it's all me! But don't think it was easy, it takes me a long time to edit like this because I am not very good at it! But I'm getting better. 😊
Great video, I had no idea that they directly took/(stole) patterns and riffs even in same same key from those records, especially that Soul II Soul one! I've transcribed loads of streets of rage 2 tracks note for note (with the same patches), if anyone's interested?
I never played Streets of Rage growing up, but recently I keep hearing its name. I have been planning a retro-nostalgia vision quest, but a combination of not having much experience with either Sega or beat-em-ups was leading me to passively skip this series. But I love me some good game music. I'll have to add this one to the list.
As someone who _did_ grow up playing this game I always think of it as that 2 player game where you both fight over who gets to wield the pipe. 'Player two has picked up the pipe, drop kick him and steal it for yourself.' Ha, my friend and I spent most of the game fighting each other rather than the enemies, fun times. Probably the first game I played where I spent more time doing my own thing instead of what the game was designed for, up until GTA made it normal. Of course it was great in single player too but when you're there and the other guy picks up a nice weapon his back starts to look reeaal tempting...
