Using Fishnet Stockings for Pottery Design - UNDERGLAZE PAINTING MADE EASY!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 лис 2024
- Ann reaches into her underwear drawer for ideas to create unique patterns on pottery with fishnet stockings! This process is an easy way to make underglaze painting much more fun! Fishnets are cheap (at least the ones we used) and you just need a little underglaze and an atomizer - enjoy! Be sure to set your screen resolution to 4K to best enjoy this video!
Pieces were fired to cone 5. They were glazed on the inside with Ann's White Liner Glaze - link below. The designs were glazed over with Amaco C-11 Clear (2 coats)
Answers to questions we get all the time:
We typically bisque to Cone 04 and fire to Cone 5-6
Ann typically uses Standard English Porcelain no. 365 unless specified otherwise in the video

*******Remember, these stockings were made of NYLON. Nylon repels water so it acts as a resist for the underglaze. I tried this with patterned tights, but I quickly realized they were made with cotton. the cotton absorbed the underglaze and I lost all the pattern. Only use stockings made of water repellent material.
Great idea Ann! And the results are so beautiful. Thanks a lot for your explanation
You can vanish the cotton ones to make them repellant.
@@marzadky4934 Hi Marzadky. Interesting idea. I wonder if varnishing them would hurt the ability to be elastic and fit tightly over the clay??
@@liaroose4972 My pleasure Lia. Give them a go!
Unbalivveabble idea?so i cant long to Payne for thiant and so Nylond helped mine wives to rooyke these footies duma.
I 100% love how you identified the hawk calling in the background.
THANK YOU FOR NOTICING! I don't even think Ann got that when I showed her the final edit...this is Jim :)
You have now taken the title of my Favorite Mad Scientist ❗@ 6am. I went straight to my grannies panty drawer to see if I still had my textured hose. Woke hubby up (I blamed it on you lol ) TO MUCH FUN❗ Definitely going to try this. While having a cup of coffee with you ❤
HAHAHAHA!!! I love it!!! thanks for sharing that with me and I am sorry for waking up your hubby, haha. ......one thing, check to make sure your hose are made from NYLON and not cotton. If they are Nylon, they should work great!! Have fun and thank you so much for the coffee!!
Just a unbelieve 💡! I used old selfmade crocheted table covers to stamp into wet clay, but to use tights for painting techniques are a just great idea! Thanks for sharing!
Hey Viki! I am so glad. you liked it. Great idea about the crocheted table covers!!! Briliant!
OMG!!! I feel like there isn't anything that you can't tackle and make it work into amazing pottery pieces. I love this.
I would definitely buy one of your new fish net patterns in black. Love the colour change from your usual red, blue yell and sometimes green pastel colours to black and one black with a hint of green love them and this video
Thanks Ann & co 🏴❤️
Hey Lynsey! gotta change it up every now and then right. Im glad you enjoyed it! Black and white is definitely the most dramatic combo, right.
Some of those patterns remind me of snake scales... Especially the orange one! Very fitting!
There’s going to be a run on fishnet stockings now!!!
The results are beautiful.
You make everything look so easy!❤️
Pardon the pun about the "run" on stockings, right Janet, haha. Im glad you enjoyed it. It really is an "exciting" technique 🙂
Darn it 😂! (pun intended) I'm in Australia so I have the heads up on the stocking front. If only I knew before I bludgeoned that Brown snake a month ago.🤔
Oh my goodness, what an amazing effect! It looks so complicated, yet you’ve made it look so simple. I particularly love the mug. I’m feeling very inspired.
Hi lady . Your working it's super decoration . I am Lebanese and I studied in florence in accademia di bella arti di firenze . I am studied generally decoration art . But I never siet same your working it's very beautiful . You are studied art or you working from your self . From me to you best regards and good luck . 🤝🌷
I absolutely love how all the pots. Also you explain the technical so clearly.
What a wonderful idea! You present us with so many novel approaches. Now let us see you top that!
Haha! Now that is a challenge for sure. These are some of the most dramatic pieces I have made. I dont know if I can top it, but I will keep experimenting!
What a simple way to achieve such complex patterns. Brilliant!
Ann, you are so creative! Just amazing again! Thank you for your generous sharing.
Aww...that is so sweet of you Marilyn! It is certainly our pleasure. Have fun with this technique!
I love the 4 sided piece. They’re all beautiful. The cup with feet is amazing. Clever girl 🙌🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I like to see how your idea of capturing design, on the surface of the containers. It turns them into a container with personality.
Thanks Danillo!! I so agree. It is a great way to transfer intricate designs to the surface of a rounded piece of pottery for sure. It makes the piece so dramatic. Happy potting
looks so organic and lovely like snake scales!
I love all of your experiments. It’s so neat to see where your curiosity takes you. This video is one of my favorite experiments. Gorgeous results!
Aww....thanks so much Ali!! We really appreciate you watching. Go for it with your own pieces!!
I did something similar with straight glass hurricanes for candles. It started with a pair of stretch lace sleeves off a goodwill shirt. The light refraction for lack of a better word, is really nice.
These turned out stunning!
Cool idea - would love to see your work!
What is straight glass hurricanes, please?
These are beautiful, Anne. You’re incredibly creative.
Hi Mai!! You are so sweet. I had seen this technique a few years ago and wanted to give it a try. Finally, I got a chance to do it. Give it a try!
I used to use plastic table covering lace with under glaze colors over and then expand from the inside to swirl designs. Called it "Crazy Lace". 15 years ago.
That is a great idea Patrick! Thanks for sharing!! I might have to try that.
Thanks!I had been doing a similar “resist” but with those styrofoam lattice protectors on the Asian pears in the grocery stores but never thought to use fish net stockings! Thank you for the idea. Btw with my idea of the styrofoam lattice protectors I used glazes on the bisque.
Awesome idea! Thank you for your support - we really appreciate it!
Mug is my favorite I like imperfections on handmade items.
Nice job! Thanks for sharing.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your ideas, thanks for sharing Anne....❤️❤️❤️
Wow. These are GORGEOUS!!! Can’t wait to try this out!!
Yeah! Im glad you liked it!!! go for it. I think they are having a sale on the fishnets this week too.
FIVE STARS,,,, EXCELLENT,,,,,,, the one you masked and then painted on i think is my favorite,, but the idea of the stockings was for me the idea that was great.. :)
My word! You are so creative! I love these, they are just beautiful. And the most amazing thing is…. You managed to get the lines straight on that one! That’s something I never could do on my actual legs! Lol🤗🐝❤️
Haha, too funny Deborah. 🙂🙂🙂

OMG, who would of thought to do something like this, so fun. It gave me ideas for other crafts. Thank you for sharing.❤😊
That looks so great! Very clever idea.
Wow what a clever idea! This is a great technique for adding colour, pattern and textural effects, with very effective results. Thank you.
Im glad you liked it Crystal!! Give it a go!! It really is easy!
These are wonderful! I always enjoy your creativity!
Oh, these are just lovely! I especially like the 4 sided one with the natural sides, what a special effect that made! What a great idea, I'll be using this technique for sure, thank you so much for sharing your lovely pieces!
Great idea! They are gorgeous! You do such a good job. Thanks so much!!
Aww....Thank YOU so much!!! that is so kind. I saw this technique a few years ago and thought back then it would be fun to try. I finally go my chance, 🙂
So happy to have fallen upon this video!!! Adding this project to my long list of underglaze trials :) Thank you for sharing
I am glad this could be inspirational for you. I have a long list to experiment with too 🙂. Happy potting
I live in a slumlord apartment where the landlord doesn't even know who I am and now I'm wondering if I could get away with installing a kiln in the basement. No one even goes there because the washer hasn't worked in ten months! I am trained in pottery making and I already know what I want to make to stretch fishnets over. Amazing idea, amazing work!!!
Not an expert on that but they do make small kilns now that dont take up much space...good luck!
@@LittleStreetPottery do they?!! I'm going to look into that, thank you!!
Those patterns and application are so cool.
All those pieces came out amazing absolutely ❤ them.
42 seconds in and I know this is going to be awesome...
Edit: and I was not wrong. Those are amazing!
Hey Em!! Yeah!!!! Im so glad you enjoyed that. We had so much fun making this one and all of the pieces were just stunning at the end.
Love these so much! I was just thinking the other day I have that atomizer and never use it. Now I will!
I did something similar using a doilie to actually press a lace pattern into the clay, I then used an oxide over the whole piece sponged off the oxide on the raised parts and then when dry sponged on a glaze only to the raised parts of the pattern. It was a lot of work but looked great when finished
Would love to see your work!
I was gasping and responding to you while watching this video. These are just beautiful and you come up with such creative ideas all the time. I have to try this!
*AAAAHHHH!!!! I LOVE IT!!* 😱❤️😍
Please make a leg shaped cup with this pattern!! I’d buy a whole set!!😱🤣❤️
What a great idea…putting it on the list!
Really super fanciful!! I am certain that I wouldn't have guessed how you came up with that spectacular look. Thanks for always sharing your creativity. 😊
Thanks Shirley! I had seen pottery with those patterns and saw that they said they used fishnets. Ever since, I have wanted to experiment to see if I could make it work.
Крутая идея!!!!с тюлью и скатертями знал только))
thanks, love this ideas... making the transvers is a lot more fun then buying ...
Ann great video that is amazing how a simple stocking will give you a gr8 design.
This is so clever. Love LOVe LOVE it! Thank you for opening the space for more...
Have you tried spraying glaze through these tights instead of underglaze? Love this technique- sent it to my potter friends and they all loved it too
OHHH......I havent tried that, but thanks for the idea. I really do feel like I have just scratched the surface of this technique.
They’re all so unique and pretty ! 💖
Hi Easter! Aww...thanks so much!!! Give them a go!
Very, very nice results. These techniques will transfer nicely to polymer clay. Lots of good ideas and inspiration in this well-made video.
Wow! Fantastic and looked like a lot of fun…..you are always so creative Anne! I really enjoy watching your channel 😊
I don’t even know what to say!! This is beyond amazing I’m so many ways!! You should win some kind of reward for all of the incredible things you come up with! I enjoy your channel sooo much!! My favorite pieces were the ones with color underneath. Several of them also look like snake skin. Thank you soo much! Can not wait to try. I love your “Covid” hair!! My hair is to my calves. I really need it trimmed but the woman I usually had trim my ends left during Covid and it’s really hard to trust anyone else.
Aww....you are so sweet Michele. Thanks so much. Im glad you liked the video. Jim also noted the snake skin look. Maybe I should have painted some snakes on the one I masked off. 🙂. You like my covid hair? haha. I had no idea I looked like that from the back, haha. Now my hair is cut just below my shoulders. Maybe ask your friends who cuts their hair?
Absolutely fabulous !
What a fun idea! I made some Halloween mugs in class last week with lacy spooky fabric rolled into the clay first for texture. I’d love to try these ideas out too! Great video guys! Ann, your hair! Omg, I’m so envious of those gorgeous flowing locks! 😍💜💜💜
Im glad you liked it!!! What a great idea with the Halloween material. I bet there is somewhere you could find Halloween themed fishnets too. right. ....Thanks for the kind words about my hair, haha. I didnt know it looked like that from the back. I went out and cut it the next day just a little longer than my shoulders, haha
@@annruel1982 I bet it was so much lighter on your head! 🥰 I’ll try & send you pics of my mugs after I glaze & fire them! 🧛🏻♀️🕷🎃💀

Hahahaha!!! You dont have those in your underwear drawer John? You are missing out for sure, haha....Jim found that music. It is a sexy Pachabels Canon, right.
@@annruel1982 Thanks Ann...I thought of a great application for these...have seen it done with spray paint which did not excite me...I ordered these online...my wife and I share the same Amazon account...I have some explaining to do.

Think I need to find some nylon stockings! Great idea!!!
I wonder if sponging the underglaze on would work also instead of spray. I think I might try. Great idea. Love watching your videos.
Great idea!!
Please tell us how your experiment went
@@mabuhayPinay I will. Just gotta get it done. 😂
Stunning!
These look fantastic.
Great idea, beautiful stuff
Thanks for the fun and creative ideas! This looks great! Also, you mentioned going outside for safety measures and that got me thinking: could you make a video about safety in the ceramic workshop? I'm starting with pottery at home, but I've read that the dust can be bad so better to clean it wet. Any other tip?
Great idea Ana. Dust is definitely not your friend in the studio. You are right about wet mopping and damp sponging. A good dust mask is also a great thing to have. I have one right beside my work table. A fire extinguisher is a must not to mention a fire alarm just in case. Rubber gloves for handling glaze materials. If you are making your own glazes, learn about the ingredients to make sure you know which need extra care to handle. Some things like ash glazes can cause allergic reactions. 🙂
@@annruel1982 thanks! I've never heard about the rubber gloves for glazes in my ceramic class, so it's good to know. I feel like this art is expanding at a rate that the safety information is not.
@@AnaMahsati Safety is always something to keep in mind no matter what you are doing. I think all crafts have some sort of "be careful" issues. As far as the gloves go, there are only a few materials that you need to be aware of which may not be good for your skin as it will dry it out or it may be caustic and cause an allergic reaction. Some studios use more controversial materials like with lead in it. or something that may give you GREAT results, but you definitely want to be careful if you try these...I dont use materials like that.
@@annruel1982 thanks again for the advice, I'll search more information about it! That lead part for starters.
@@AnaMahsati Lead is certainly something that here in USA, all suppliers and studios are very careful not to include in their products. Many times you will see a disclaimer if there is lead in the glazes. But it is good that you are aware of the safety issues. Good for you!
Beautiful
These look amazing!
