gorillaz creator talks about abolishing the show X factor before playing a gig at Denmarks roskilde festival facebook:- pages/whatsne... / www / gorillazman
As a major victim of his own fame back in the 90's, Damon is legitamately worried about a generation that just wants the fame. Damon worked his ass off and made genius albums, just to get torn apart by the gossip press, and I think he's genuinely puzzled about WHY people wants to be famous for soulless shit these days. Because to him fame in itself is very much the downside of being an artist. He's very spot on, and ten years later the whole "influencer" crap has taken over. He saw it all coming. He's a brilliant, clever guy. And quite the tortured artist as well. :)
@@Ulymaldo their master said to them to do it,he loses precious souls and he wont take that for an answer, mainstream is a cut thorat business, wannabe gods owning the world with their polution and dumbdown thinking ,not sure if acting or really burned out fried brains from lack of knowledge and too much demon spirits in them portray total nonsense and brain washing
I love how Damon just speaks his mind instead of mindlessly spewing shit he knows the interviewer wants to hear. Especially the X-Factor question. He knew what they were getting at, they probably wanted him to sit there and falsely praise the show for being "the best thing on TV and blah blah blah" but he instead gave his real insight on it, how it's all corporate garbage made to recruit more plastic barbie-like "role models".
"It's a gentle form of death." He might sometimes struggle to express his thoughts in interviews but whenever he does say something, he hits it bang on the nail - I love the way he just speaks his mind like that, most celebrities just say the same old bullshit over again, only what they are supposed to say. Damon and Jamie are constantly like breaths of fresh air in a polluted city
I think it's perfectly normal to have crooked teeth, especially for a man. Who says that every celebrity has to have flawless, white, 'hollywood-style' teeth? It only shows that there aren't many (if any) PR guys behind him and his musical projects staying in charge of his appearance. That's what I respect him for.
Fiona Raspberry I like him as a song artist because he's so raw and organic, unlike all of the commercialized and corporate fake garbage "music" that's roaming out there now. He's himself, and he doesn't change himself to fit the medias standards of what he should be. Even his appearance. You start to notice all these plastic Barbie-doll looking singers everywhere because that's what the money hungry media wants, and they'll have perfect pearly whites. Damon on the other hand, is himself. Why tf should he get his teeth done if it's not hurting him or anything? If anything, it's more natural to have slightly crooked teeth than perfectly aligned rows tbh. How many "average"people have perfectly symmetrical rows? More people have a bit of crooked teeth, because that's just what's natural.
In these interviews, it always seems that he's aware of the honest answer, and the "correct" answer, and in his mind he's like "Oh, that's not gonna be pretty... But screw it, I'm not gonna talk rubbish!"
I used to feel the same. I was a huge Gorillaz fan since 2001, and I still love everything up to and including “The Fall“. But they lost me with “Humanz” by embracing autotune and the like. It sounds too much like Top 40 radio, and their tunes these days don’t really interest me either, other than that Robert Smith track. I understand the desire to keep up with trends, but the Gorillaz I grew up with pioneered trends, instead of chasing them. The balance these days seems to veer more towards commercial pop than artistry imo. The experimentation is virtually gone. Damon still writes good lyrics, though.
I'm like dying inside at 6:51 when he starts smiling and his eyes are just glowing, and then I died at 6:52 when he looked right at the camera and directly into my eyes
Damon: Boycott those shows. Turn over Interviewer: Why? Damon: Boycott the whole thing. Boycott- Interviewer: Why? Damon: Boycott the people who advertise on it. Boycott it; just destroy it. Interviewer: Why? Damon: Why?
Poor Damon.. He starts getting distracted and off track. I feel like he doest really like the interview. He looks like hes trying to explain emotions to a robot. Dont waste your time Damon, this guy doesnt get it.
I totally agree, Damon talks about really serious stuff, how he creates music and his emotions about it, but this stupid interviewer finds that the most important thing is x factor, who the fuck cares about that, you are listening to a great guy talking about real values of music and his experiences, what else do you want? And the whole video is called Ban X factor says Damon Albarn, just get the celebrity to say something shocking so you could get publicity jeeeesh
See, Damon hates interviews. And the problem is that he gives his real GENUINE answers instead of some spewed bullshit he knows he wants people to hear. Often, interviewers and uninteresting and couldn't give a flying fuck, so Damon is basically talking to a brick wall about these matters. I'd be the same way, not to mention he's kind of awkward when it comes to talking anyways.
I completely agree with Damon. The music industry has become a perverse entity where capitol gain is key and the message and spirit as Albarn expressed is long gone. Damon has such passion with such topics which is probably why he has a hard time getting through the raw emotions to express his ideas. Every word of what he says is true though.
Truth that. Graham of Blur said he saved Damon from bulling in high school. Skins used to beat the shit out of him in the school toilets, writings 666 on his forehead. Poor Damon
in every interview of Damon Albarn you can see how he's learned from all his previous experiences. He's the master of explaining his point without giving anyone a chance to rip it up and change it simply to create a story for the press
Albarn speaks the truth. The X-Factor, Idol-shows create a whole $___-ton of kids who think they're 'the perfect musical instrument', in the end to be hacked apart emotionally, or turned into entitled 'cover artists'. Really, how many are relevant 'artists'. I loved the CONCEPT of art-meets-music. It brought me back to the days of turning on the radio, hearing a (REALLY GOOD) song and wondering who, how did it's creation happen. I love how Albarn taps into the Clash members, DeLa Soul, Little Dragon… it's never the same thing twice. And isn't that the point of being there, in the moment, with the musician? Now days, lip synching for high-end concerts is becoming the norm. As an ex-employee (artist, really) of a now defunct music promoter (because large labels took over), I want to make sure who I'm seeing isn't some robot. (p.s. I saw the Clash & Talking Heads at Red Rocks LIVE is BETTER. It's living history.)
I just stumbled upon this interview (by accident, 8 years late) & I cannot believe how relevant & important his message is still to this day! I’m actually in awe of this man’s brilliance right now. Truly. Music really is ritual!!! 🙌🏼
His idea of what music should be is so refreshing. I do feel myself becoming emersed in the world of Plastic Beach and it's because of the creative vision Gorillaz has. Damon's a true genius.
He's a very well spoken man with a firm grasp of the English, and whilst I do agree with you're saying, I suspect he may have been high or drunk, he certainly wasn't "all there." He was at a music festival so it's fairly common place.
Well said Mr. Albarn and thanks for giving props to the greatest ever filmed concert event in the popular music era, Stop Making Sense gave me the knowledge to understand that music and it's performance is art in a very holy level.
What gets me is all these kids with their squinty eyes as if trying to put passion in on X factor, and the horrendous smoothness and commercialism to their voices and horrendous vocal twilling they do with notes. There are a few good singers on X factor but please can we just have one note in each word, not half a dozen, and select someone for their voice and writing ability. Little dragon winning X factor for instance.
I like the way he talks to you and actually looks you in the eye and is interested in what he's talking about if you ask the right questions, alot of interviewers poke fun and talk shit about Gorillaz in their interviews
Damon is right. He's so great at what he does. He makes it because he enjoys it, loves it, and has fun with it. Damon started all his projects as small hobbies, even Blur, which later became hugely successful because he stuck with it and had fun with it :) I know so many people who hate their jobs and ignore their passions. If you believe in yourself and what you can offer the world, like Damon Albarn, you are unstoppable. =)
Damon is a beautiful genius....amen to all he says on the subject of the x factor...' A gentle form of Death' is over generous though. Oscar Wilde was correct when he said that 'all that is popular , is wrong.' Great interview Damon!
Damon is just so right about the xfactor and all that crap - I actually find myself getting upset at times at the way the music industry is going. Music means so much to me and I just despair at the way it's being used. I mean, I have respect for any musician who writes their own music - even if I really dislike it. Introvert? Doubt it. have you seen Graham's interviews?

Jeremy Schep Me2, anything crap like Glee and X Factor, are in the garbage
Jeremy Schep he allowed his music on the trolls music so he's a hypocrite
Saddogman Cartoons he wouldn't do that if he didn't have to, maybe he needed the money for humanz
Saddogman Cartoons Dude saturnz bars cost 800k. He also needs to pay all the collaborators. He needs to sell out sometimes.
Jeremy Schep I won't forgive him for letting Kidzbop use Feel Good.
Feels bad
In these interviews, it always seems that he's aware of the honest answer, and the "correct" answer, and in his mind he's like "Oh, that's not gonna be pretty... But screw it, I'm not gonna talk rubbish!"
This is why Gorillaz exist. They are the good balance.
Reject false icons is what the band is about. They reject the celebrity cult and focus on music.
