Rael, really great to ride along with you! One thing I notice when sailing along on a designer's boat is the boat and the designer meld. In slow moments, it's as if the boat talks through the man's mouth. And it may seem random on the surface. You tear off a piece of toilet paper, ball it up, toss it in the water, count off the seconds as it slides by and then swing the camera at yourself, you calculate aloud, converting seconds to meters, meters to miles, miles to speed...So the careful viewer can see, the boat and the man are a complex of vectors and measurements. Every feature down to the the hatchback car, the minimal hulls, the cluges and hacks, each design iteration and tweak, is a ploy to deftly steal and sweetly cheat a little bit more from the woodpile and the wind. Another dimension to your story is seeing how the high and the low cross and flex in any circumstance. The ancient-future. A pacific proa in the mediterranean, a shipyard in the Balkans, a stone-layer floating on the water, modern epoxy and milled wood, motor-sailing with a yuloh, showing us a paper-printed chart while making the finger gestures of zooming in on a touch screen device...Polynesian cruising in Greece... The effect of all these contrasts, of being caught between worlds, between wealth and stealth, between the universal aspiration to sail and the peculiar circumstances of your specific and actual world, is riveting. Good novelists get their main character stuck, trapped, pinned down right at the intersection of blind forces, between a rock and a hard place. Then they invite us to watch, to hang for awhile. Because it is not in purity where all is revealed, it is in the sublime mess of human intervention. Landlubbers gaze wistfully at sailboats scudding by and muse on how gently they flow with the wind. But we know that the sail twists torturously against the daggerboard below. The hulls cleave and mount atop the heaving waves. Shrouds stretch against an unyielding mast. Make or break, yeah!
Daniel, you have a way with words that leaves me speechless. A brilliant feel for detail, then in a unique way you translate it into words on paper. Instead of looking at the object, you seem to look right through it.... You read me as if my thoughts were written all over my forehead. Then finely write in your way, the past is present and the present is the future..... There is no wrong nor there is a right..... It's the way we combine our resources as we build our dreams, I truly like the community that's building around this channel and the future of sailing. It takes stamina to take part in the revival of the most amazing vessels to sail this planet, I love the mutual understanding we all have, the black sheep of the herd, those that think for them selves vs those that just follow the herd blindfoldedly ........ You mention the bond between man and his ship, for a loved ship is a good ship. remove that love, that bond and you become an unhappy boat owner of an unhappy boat, these boats lay to their dock lines as a jungle grows under their waterlines, while their owners' credit cards are maxed deep beyond their red lines..... Very well put!! short and to the point. Winter? cant wait for it to be over....... Thanks for shedding the true light on the matter. Keep Shunting, BSY.

You hit it on the head Daniel! I believe this is the most balanced concept for a micro cruiser, cheap and simple to build, can be loaded, fast enough, very safe and very easy to transport. I'm very pleased with this design and feel it can take heavy weather very well thanks to the easily reefed Junk rig. Thanks for mentioning some of his qualities...... All the best, BSY.

I'll share my build when I finish and hopefully take some adventures like this..!!!! I love that compass u photoshopped, great idea. One question I have is... Do you notice a big difference with the daggerboard up and down? im considering NOT using one on my Vaka hull on the trimaran.... Safe Sailing. Thanks for sharing.
Happy u liked the vid! Yea, share your build please..... Hard question... On 'Why Not?' I felt a difference, on Make O'Break I didn't really check, though I will say, that with dagger down the wake goes straight aft, looks like there's no leeway at all, though I never did a true comparison... I will say that once sailing hard on the wind with board down, it's hard to get it up, since the whole boat is sliding sideways and hanging off the daggerboard, the water resistance against it is holding it in place and wont let it float up..... so yea it works, how well? sorry can't say, still I do believe it makes a good 10 degrees difference, maybe more.... Wharram cats with V hulls don't need boards. What shape hull do you have??? If you don't want a board going through your vaka, how about going through one of the amas??? I too would't be happy with a daggerboard in a small tri's vaka. Think about it.....
@@BalkanShipyards also the main hull will be symmetrical (same bow and stern) so i can do a proa with a different ama than the 2 smaller outriggers. Im trying to make as many options to build and change later. So I plan to give SHUNTING a try!!!

Your Chart plotter zoom is magic :) Love your spirit of adventure and delightful commentary. Such an inspiration. I have a question in your experience for a small 5.4m shunting proa do you have a preference of a Junk rig vs crab claw? What are the main advantages?
Bro, Crab Claws are so lekker! Easy and cheap to make, yet they deliver so much power. Junks, not so, also sheeting with Junk rig must be bang on, very narrow powerband, if you're slightly off it loses power big time. Crab Claws are the total opposite, they pull no matter how wrong sheeting is...... But CC can't be reefed VS JR that reefs in seconds. U choose, though may be a good idea to test your boat with CC first and then see what you want. The JR is harder to make and sail, but much safer..... Good Luck!
The AD-scull is designed and patented by Mr Atsushi Doi, he has many videos on youtube, just write AD-scull and watch them, you will understand it.... He's a cool guy that has developed many sculling systems over many years, he has nothing against individuals watching his vids and building their oars.... A small tip, the shaft must have a bend in it. My first attempt was a straight oar, it kinda worked for a small boat..... the bend is very important, then divide it into about 3 thirds, blade, shaft between blade and bend, and shaft after bend (handle). Watch his vids, Good luck. Keep Shunting, BSY.
A shunting vessel works best with a sail that moves forwards. Moving the sail places CE ahead of midship, a tacking sail places it aft of that, resulting in too much weather helm. Proas place CLR forwards, so CE should be there too. Keep shunting, Balkan Shipyard
