      @@BalkanShipyards I can see you have put a lot of work into LaShunk mate but it has certainly paid off. You are a talented fellow with great eye for boat design. Keep up the good work, I can't wait for you next project.

    It is very nice to see you out on the water in the LaShunk! It seems to have worked flawlessly. The shunting and reefing are perfect. When you were talking about the clamps that secure the shunting rail, I was thinking, "He might be able to lash those on," and then you said exactly the same thing. Good work, and congratulations!

      YES!!!! Things happen when they do I guess..... True that vaka is very beamy, it wasn't designed for a proa, I just decided to start from scratch and used an old canoe I had, the ama, on the other hand was designed for a proa and it rocks!!!! Happy u like him brother! Thanx!

    Rael, you did it! Congratulations! Such an elegant design... I also thought of a junk rigged proa, but my idea is a simpler, canting, floating junk (without a rail). Yours work beautifuly. Let's hope mine works as well as yours. You are a genius... Peace!

    Congratulations Rael! Your determination to make a simple shunting sail is paying off. I don't know if it is your goal but I think it would be wonderful if you can get to the point where your boats and sail system could be marketed...but that's a horse of a different color and maybe not your cup of tea. Not every dream has to be turned into money but you are a genius and an artist with a great work ethic and I would love to see what you could accomplish with adequate financing. Sadly the world is upside down and the poor artists have to wait for something to fall from the pockets of the rich.

    Congratulations looks like you got it:
    - shunting: sorted and easy
    - reefing: sorted
    - CE: good (nearly perfect?)
    - back winding: no problem
    what next?
    - make a better junk sail (not just poly tarp)?
    - go for a longer voyage?
    - build a bigger proa?
    I do have one question, can you easily drop the mast while on the water (for traversing under low bridges)?

    • @BalkanShipyards
      @BalkanShipyards  5 років тому +1

      Next? Deck him, sort out that board that holds the sculling oar, make up a bunch of hatches and hope to cruise the Greek islands October. This sail is pretty good and Polytarp is strong enough for a junk rig, so probably will keep this sail, cos time is running short and there's lots to do............
      No, raising this mast and rigging this sail is hard enough on land, that dropping it and raising it on water would be a serious task! If I can stop and tie up, I could do it to go under one or two bridges, then I will need to find where to stop again, or beach him to get the rig back up.... possible, but I would avoid it at all cost.
      Happy you like him Dave, and Yea, you hit it! Pretty sorted out concept........
      All d best, bSY

    If you want to make the boat lighter, think of replacing the wooden deck with a trampoline, like in a catamaran.

    • @BalkanShipyards
      @BalkanShipyards  5 років тому

      I agree that it will save weight and that's the way a multihull should be! though shunting this boat does require a solid deck I can easily walk on, still it may be a good idea to combine wooden boards with a net and meet you half way....... COOL!

    All that work paid off in the end it seems, it is beautiful, especially the part at 5:30 looks like its sailing in clouds. I think it turned out perfect , congrats! (;
    Any thoughts on what comes next for you?

      Thanks bro, paid off big time!!! It was 2 days of sailing in the clouds.......... Next? hope some cruising with him, Then, next year back to Crystal Clear, put a new rig on her.............. Good luck with your boat! all d best, bSY.

    @Anomalous-Plant 5 років тому

    Hey! Great to see you got it on the water, you're a hard working guy! Backwind seems to be no problem either!
    What do you say, is this your favourite rig so far?

    • @BalkanShipyards
      @BalkanShipyards  5 років тому

      This rig puts all my other rigs in the pocket and there's still enough space left over for a cell phone, cigarettes and change! This may be the first proa rig in the world as far as I know anyway, that can tack to windward under emergency of course.... I can't think of any other rig that keeps sailing forward backwinded, therefor allowing you to steer him back to pacific mode. All my other proa rigs, once backwinded, boat would come to a full stop immediately and start sailing backwards! This disgusting feature was a huge problem and getting back into pacific mode was hard work, in strong winds with my big proa, at times I thought I'm not gonna make it, turning her high bow through the eye of the wind with the sculling oar was hell!
      Above all, REEFING this thing is a pure pleasure! No rig reefs like a junk rig!! I can put mu money on that anytime!
      A long road has come to an end. It made me older for sure, still I also got wiser........
      Thanx for that question, it hit the spot!! All d best.
