    I have run the gauntlet of health issues that started around the age of 40, at which time I was physically fit and exercised on a regular basis, all kinds of weird issue came up, hives/rashes on my legs and face, salivary gland stones twice, migraines, then bouts of pneumonia and leg edema, after about 5 years of this I was diagnosed with pulmonary sarcoidosis and treated with steroids, that led to osteoporosis and two compression fractures of my spine, all the while I was treated as if nothing was wrong and continued to push myself to work, I was tired all of the time, woke up with my heart pounding, talked to several Dr.s who told me my ekg was fine and not to worry, fast forward I had blood work 7 months ago and the carbon levels were high in my blood, again the Dr. said it was not an issue, two months ago I asked the Dr. if she had ever reviewed any of the records from other Dr.s I had seen, the reply was we never received them, I again told her that a Dr. in the same hospital had recommended a sleep study after my last bout of pneumonia, she said she would check and two weeks later I was scheduled for one, I followed up with her a couple weeks after that and was just told I have severe sleep apnea, that my breathing stopped more than 30 times in an hour, I have felt like I have never been listened too by most Dr.s, treated like a hypochondriac and even after a diagnosis was found, its has been hell for about 15 years, I have worked 38 years with no breaks except for a week off once in a blue moon. I tried not to complain too much but now I say you have to complain, yell even to be heard, when you know there is a problem if you want help.

    It looks the same as these, just less channels to look at. No airflow, leg EMG, only one belt. Just 5 naps. If you have REM sleep (can see on my website) on any of the naps you can be diagnosed with Narcolepsy. Sleep onset REM on most of the naps is strong Narcolepsy. Usually you would have Stage N1 then N2 immediately at sleep onset.
    Good luck! Join my forum if you have any further questions. I respond much faster there.

    Go ahead and give it another try. I made some changes to the registration question.
    If that doesn't work, then it's likely because one of the other parameters aren't entered right. I can also just register for you if that doesn't work....but I'm confident that it will!

    I knew I had apnea but it took forever before I could get a sleep study. I had one at 36, just a few months ago. They had to turn my pressure up to 12 to get my apnea to stop. I stopped breathing an average of 45 times per hour. I'm guessing my case is more severe than this one? I feel like I've never had real rest. I hurt everywhere. Everything is a massive challenge. I am not obese. I have always been physically fit, but the last year and a half is when things became too much. I'm 6'1 and normal weight of 180 with strength and muscle tone. 2 years is all it took to lose a tremendous amount of strength and increase to 210. I hope I can get my energy and rest back. Waiting inpatiently for my CPAP

    Mask fitting can absolutely be tricky. Especially if the pressure isn't completely right. Then you are fighting two variables which can be very frustrating. If you have a dry mouth in the morning and you aren't using a full face mask or heated humidity, you may want to give them a try. Have you joined the forum?

    I'm not sure what you're asking for the first part. The second question is lab specific. Usually 2-3 hours if they're moderate to severe. You have to establish a baseline for a diagnosis first before starting CPAP.

I was given a cpap and when I went for my follow up, my dr. said I had the wrong machine and I need a bipap. he said something about me having central sleep apnea. It has to do with chemoreceptors in the carotid bodies. The signal for CO2 buildup is delayed, so you get a wonky respiratory drive.

    Quite recently my partner noticed that i would stop snoring and breathing, then take a deep breath.
    She hasn't noticed it since.
    I have recorded my heart rate for the last few nights and there are lots of spikes where it goes from 55bpm up to 90-130bpm. This happens between 30-80 times a night,
    Is this another indicator of sleep apnea or is it normal.

    Once you get the airway open using cpap and there are very few events, is there a way to track the REM sleep to see if the person is getting enough during a nights sleep. What kind things would keep a person from getting enough REM sleep? I will make the assumption that a certain amount of REM sleep is needed for a restful nights sleep. Can the annoyance of the mask kick a person out of REM sleep during the lighter stages of sleep during the latter portion of the nights sleep. I hear people complain alot on sleep apnea blog sites that even though they are on cpap and there are few non breathing events, they are still tired when it comes time to get up and going in the morning. They usually tell them they must learn to get used to the mask and machine. Is there a process that trouble shoots why the patient is not getting restful sleep even the though the use of the cpap in keeping the airway open is a success.

    • @Freecpapadvice
      @Freecpapadvice  10 років тому

      Drugs can inhibit REM. Alcohol is one. Anything that wakes you up would (possibly) prevent or kick you out of REM.
      You can't track REM sleep without the aid of EEG electrodes. You can use a free program called SleepyHead to track your CPAP/Bilevel/ASV therapy. It tracks useful trends such as: Mask Pressure, Leak (intended and unintended), Tags Apnea, Hypopnea, "Central Apnea". (not perfect...but ballpark)

    • @westin1985
      @westin1985 10 років тому

      TheLankyLefty27 Can Nasal Decongestants like Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride aka Afrin inhibit REM? They say a side effect of could be Difficulty Sleeping. I sleep fine while I am tired. The last couple of hours of sleep, which is light sleep, is when most of the REM is supposed to occur. Correct? This is usually a light sleep state as far as I understand. In light sleep it don't take much to wake a person up. I will make the assumption that this drug could make it difficult to get to REM sleep and heighten annoyances like the mask on the face. I need this drug to keep an open nose or other wise the cpap is useless. Are there drugs or herbs that promote REM sleep? What are your thoughts on this? I am sure it happens a lot.

    Hi Jason is me again. I have my results from my study and it says that my AHI is 9.2/hr (mild) and REM AHI was 65.8 and also said No abnormal EKG arrhythmias observed so I just want to know if I don't buy the cpap machine should I be alright??

    • @Freecpapadvice
      @Freecpapadvice  9 років тому +3

      Your REM AHI is 65.8. You stop breathing more than once a minute while you are in a restorative sleep stage. This is in the severe range!!!! Hold your breath for 15 seconds every minute, for 10 minutes. This is what you're doing while you're asleep. Long term you will have some serious problems from this. If I were in the same position I would happily get a CPAP machine. If cost is an issue I would buy one off of CraigsList.

    Hi there, thanks for the video. I am a bit confused though about the K complex. I looked it up on I-net and found that it relates to brain activity and is graphically represented on EEG, however, in your video you mention K complex as a cardiac issue and that it is shown on ECG. Please clarify it for me so I understand. Thanks!

      @Freecpapadvice  8 років тому +1

      +Olena Bada It is brain activity. It shows up on Stage 2 sleep. I hope I didn't say that it shows up in ECG. If I did it was a slip of the tongue. Sometimes my mouth is working hard to keep up with my head and there is a delay where all sorts of bad things happen.

    I have a question about one of your comments...you said if you hold your breath for 15 seconds every minute for 10 minutes that's basically what apnea is....here's my question...I notice that I will catch myself holding my breath while I'm awake...I don't know why I do it, I don't even realize I do it most of the time...when I do think of it I try not to do it. Could that cause lethargy during the day. I'm doing a home sleep study tomorrow night. I finally got a doctor to listen to me after complaining for years that's I'm exhausted. I've literally been fatigued since I've been 13 years old. I am not 45. I am overweight but that's just been the last 4 years but I am losing weight now. I've lost 25 lbs since April due to diet change....I was never over weight as a teen. Is it normal to catch yourself holding your breath while awake? I've done this for years...also I had spinal surgery 4 years ago and continue to be in a great deal of pain. I was told that pain can actually be detected on a sleep study. How is that done? I'm curious to see what my pain reveals as I endure a lot of pain when I do sleep.

    • @Freecpapadvice
      @Freecpapadvice  9 років тому +1

      DJH Hello. Yes, holding your breathe during the day when you're focused/concentrating etc. is normal.
      I hear people say that pain can be detected in sleep studies, but those people are full of $h!t. People claim that K-complexes at arousals are pain. Well....if there is a K-complex at an arousal, then it wasn't an arousal because the EEG is much slower than 12 Hz. I asked our neurologist (sleep boarded) about this theory and he said "people are full of shit." LOL.
      Remember that pain is subjective too, so nobody would be able to see your EEG and determine that it's caused by pain.

    Hi, I'm 23 years old and I was required to get a sleep study done so I can drive a bus. They do this because I'm overweight, the size of my neck an all that. The thing is I don't have any symptom of sleep apnea. I already got my study done but I'm afraid they tell me I need a cpap only to get more money from me. I had to pay $950 from my pocket to get this done and I don't have money for the cpap machine. Do you think I need this machine anyway even though I don't have the symptoms of sleep apnea??

    • @Freecpapadvice
      @Freecpapadvice  9 років тому +2

      I would have to see your sleep study to tell if you have sleep apnea. As far as the DOT is concerned, they don't care if you have symptoms or not. They care if you have sleep apnea. You're very young, so the symptoms of sleepiness aren't as noticeable sometimes...as well as the other symptoms.
      I have a home sleep study service that is half that price by the way.... :(
      If you're not comfortable with the diagnosis, ask to go over the raw data with either your physician or a scoring technologist. I've done that for patients before because they're skeptical of the results.
