This classic from 1986 reached number 6 on the Billboard chart. The group is from England 🇬🇧 and when I think of the 80's this song always comes to mind. Sadly lead singer Tony Lewis and guitarist and songwriter John Spinks have passed away, RIP Tony and John, your music 🎶 will live on.
@@jhon8497 Looked it up again and Tony was born on December 21, 1957 in the East end of London and that's where he died at his home near London at the age of 62. RIP TONY.
This song hit EVERYONE at the same exact time back in ‘86. Nobody had heard of this group but that intro with “Josie’s on vacation…” with the harmony and vocals and the beat…it was a hit after the first play.
1986 was a great year! Love Tony Lewis' voice! The keyboard player is Blind; Reg Webb was the keyboardist for The Outfield. He rocked it, they all did!! This song is about him cheating on his girlfriend but he actually cares about the girl (side chick). Such a dilemma. Some other songs are ""Say it isn't so", "All the love in the world", "Since you've been gone". Rest in peace to the members of The Outfield who are no longer with us but will never be forgotten!! RIP Lead Singer Tony Lewis,(Oct 19, 2020), Keyboardist Reg Webb (Jan 28, 2018, cancer), Guitarist John Spinks (July 9, 2014, cancer).
According to online sources I have found, the keyboard player is Reg Webb. Reg WAS blind and lost his sight at a very young age. Obviously this did not stop him from being a musician. He even had a couple of his own bands.
This is the 80s ! I always have a chuckle when I look at any photos of me in the 80s, the clothes, the hair. Leg warmers and spandex. Big hair. I wrecked the ozone layer all by myself with the amount of hair spray I had to use just to keep it "big" Great song. Thanks
5:50 "Look At This Guy With The Sunglasses" The guy with the Sunglasses is named Reg Webb, the reason why he's wearing sunglasses is because he's blind, when he was a child he'd developed an infection in his ocular nerves that required the surgical removal of both of his eyes
Reg Webb Personal life. Webb was born in Chelmsford, Essex, England. He became blind at the age of 13 months after being diagnosed with bi-lateral retinoblastoma which resulted in surgery to remove both of his eyes. Reg Webb died on 28 January 2018 from pulmonary embolism, a consequence of metastatic bladder cancer; he was 70.
Master fade out on this song! Thanks for the memories. Y'all are so enjoyable and click really well together. My go to kareoke is anything from Fleetwood Mac or AC/DC or Journey
Pure 80's, including the MTV video. This got so much air play back in the day. Another band popular at the time but very different in style ... Timbuk3 and their song "The Future's So Bright, I Got to Wear Shades". Kind of a knock on yuppies and the go-go 80s.
First off, I'm glad that back in the day I heard songs from the radio and in the record store I worked at, and not on MTV via a music video. It's easier to determine your feelings about a song without the distraction of the visuals from a music video. I wasn't a rabid viewer of MTV precisely because I didn't want some video director to influence me in any way.
The street view at the end is in NYC. You can see the bodega in the background and the American cars. The Outfield were far more successful in the US and stayed here for many years,
Oh my gosh... 1) It is still a great song! (The drums, guitar, the voice)! 2) My view on it has changed - yeah it sounds like he is cheating. Didn't really pay attention to the words before... 3) Laughed so hard! The guy appeared from nowhere. (Very obscure but he reminded me of Shades in "That Thing You Do" - A great Tom Hanks movie)! Always love hearing your perspective
To Nick's point on the cheating... It was pointed out to me once that in the "Pina Colada Song" everyone is mad at the guy. But his wife is the one who wrote the personal ad in the paper. Just a fun fact. This review was so fun!
10:49 The Outfield was active up until 2014 when guitarist John Spinks had died of cancer and disbanded after his death, vocalist and bassist Tony Lewis had went on to have a solo career until he had passed away in 2018
On a vacation far away means they've parted and she has distanced herself from him and he has emotional and physical needs he hopes shes open to facilitating
Great band that really came out of nowhere and immediately conquered the US charts. They were a British Rock/Power Pop band with a very American name and sound that was uniquely theirs. You guys should definitely check-out their 3rd big hit "Since You've Been Gone," which was the first single from their sophomore album. As much as I still love "Your Love," "Since You've Been Gone" is even better. It's absolute perfection and the video, while simple, is amazing and highly influential.
The piercing lead vocals make this song from the start followed very closely by the harmonies, guitar riff and drums. Junior year in high school for me.
They are indeed a rock trio, featuring John Spinks on guitar, Tony Lewis on bass and lead vocals, and Alan Jackman on drums. Strangely, the music video for this song prominently features additional musicians (including blind keyboardist Reg Webb) who played on the song but were never official band members.
5:07 Another UA-camr, Adam Read, AKA: Professor Of Rock, had interviewed Tony Lewis and had asked him about this song, and Tony had said that "Josie" wasn't based on a real person at all
I seem to recall hearing that they are a 3-piece band, but for some reason, the label didn't want them to be seen that way, so they threw in extra guys for the music video.
I've not always been the biggest fan of 80's pop rock like this, but I absolutely love the guitar tone on songs like this, especially after the last chorus in this one. Pretty sure The Police had a big influence on that sound.
So VERY 80's! I know this song because it was always on the radio, and many of the local bands covered it on a night out...but I never knew the name of it or who the group was!
And now you're ready for the song I just died in your arms tonight by Cutting Crew. I heard the song when I was a kid and I knew right off the bat that he was up to no good but I still love the song that I love their sound. If I hear the song come on it definitely sounds like the 80s in the best way.
I always thought this was an American band because of the “outfield” being a baseball reference. But they’re from England? Does that carry over in England?
I know it's not on this reaction but from what I've seen you all appreciate 80s synth. A great one is frankie goes to Hollywood relax. Also great extra sounds and instruments in the background. Not sure if this is a family friendly channel yet but you might want to pick the video that was not initially banned...its a bop though
Do Zach Callison's EP "A Picture Perfect Hollywood Heartbreak" it's 9 tracks with 5 songs and 4 short interludes, around 30 minutes. Great vocals and story thru the album.
Yo this song is impossible to actually sing well on Karaoke. Dudes voice is like a weird 3/4 of a octave higher than most normal men. I’m serious! I know from experience trying it myself.
to be COMPLETELY honest i did do and/or PROBABLY will really LOVE the outfield and i did do and will EQUALLY really really LOVE twitter and you tube ALMOST as much as gainbridge fieldhouse lucas oil stadium crypto arena citi field and wrigley field
I know you guys are great sports fans! (Bengals/UK T-shirts). It is appropriate that you would play this on the day the NFL season begins. Tradition at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro is that this song is cranked up between the third and fourth quarters of each Patriots game. Former Patriots quarterback Scott Zolak shows up on the Jumbotron leading the crowd. It really has nothing to do with football but it's fun to listen to 68,000 people singing at the top of their lungs! Gets the blood racing for the fourth quarter!
When you were reading off the members of the group you did not mention the keyboard player. He is blind. If you look at the beginning of the video the keyboardist is being lead in by a guitarist.
Yes the song is about cheating. He has a side chick hes using when his gf is out of town. After this encounter the side chick is giving him a ultimatum.
in every major city and even out in the burbs, there areat least 4 stations that play 80s only, 3 others country, then theres 1 lousy station for the shit you call music from 2002-current which has hardly any sponsorship. Face it, we grew up late 70s early 80s with music that is still played everyday over 40 years later. This song was on the edge, but there is NOTHING last 20 years that can match 1980-1984 period. ACDC, Floyd, Benatar, Petty, 39 Special, Survivor, Van Halen..list goes on
It’s got that 80s signature crap sound. But for whatever reason it fits this song.”🤣 Because it’s a crap song! Think Loverboy or Night Ranger does better in this pop rock genre.
We love it!!!!!!! Growing up in the 80’s, doesn’t get much better.

youd be wrong. we 80s Gen Xers loved his voice. this is iconic for 1986. "Say It Isnt So" is another great song

Yep 86 was a great year and believe the last great year of the 80’s and that things started changing I definitely lived it
Its ALMOST too good of a song than we ever really deserved. 🤣🤣😎

Dude his voice is angelic idk but I love it
This whole record is great. Check out Say it isn’t So. And the last song. Anthem
yes, this album has so many great pop songs on it.
Lots of '80s schmaltz with this one and extremely popular... was a radio staple and my sister played it ad nauseam... ugh. Nice review.

Give Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits a try. It has one hell of a guitar solo in it. Awesome song!

Good song, got to see them open for Journey on the Frontiers tour!

I went to college in '86 with a guy who, aside from hair style and inability to sing like him, looked just like Tony Lewis(lead singer).
the 80s all day over today's music
My Mom loves this band .....
Great song with great 80's production. I must disagree with you on the drum tone, though. That snare drum is killer!
So are the toms. High in the mix as well.
Wonder if your play Tom Petty live in Gainesville Florida, learning to fly

Can u guys react to Genesis live 1987 video called abacab. U guys will enjoy that video.
Please review the Alessia Cara & The Warning "Enter Sandman" UT Video - Off of the Metallica Blacklist Album.
Probably their best known song, but they had several decent songs. Ironically more popular in Ametica than their native England.
Seems strange that a British band would have a name and album title based on baseball. Do they even play it in the UK?
Never heard a single person say they didn’t like Tony Lewis’s voice lol. Tony was a player bruh!!!
